Latest file for v1.19.8:
NaturalClay-v1.1.1.zip
1-click install
-IMPORTANT NOTE-
v1.20 and all of it's prereleases are currently untested and most likely incompatible with the most recent version.
Once 1.20 comes out, I will either scrap this mod or rework it to work with the new changes, depending on how I feel about them. Until then, this mod is only compatible with v1.19
Tired of your clay projects made of fire clay suddenly turning blue when they're finished? Wish you had an easier way get red bricks?
Natural clay adds new, natural clay colors (currently red, brown, and black) to the game. The clay can be found in patches just like blue and fire clay, and can be used to make colorful variants of every ceramic item (and I do mean every!)
- Red and brown clay
- They generate in patches, evenly split between themselves and blue clay. Fire clay is left unchanged
- Black clay
- The vanilla ceramic block color is now made with black clay
- Colored variants of every ceramic block, and recipes for each
- Retextured ceramic items
- Raw bricks are retextured to more closely match raw clay
- Watering Cans are retextured to match the color of black clay
- Red bricks have their textures update to match the other bricks in the game, and are slightly less saturate
- Compatibilty!
- My goal is to have compatibility with as many mods as possible. If you have any suggestions, please leave it in the comments
- More clay colors (Pale clay, green clay, possibly more)
- Localized patches based on region, meaning you'll have to travel to find a region with a clay color you wan
- Fire clay will stay the same for balance reasons
- Config file to disable most, if not all features of the mod as needed
If a mod isn't in this list, and adds any form of ceramic/clay item, it will most likely be incompatible. Let me know of any incompatibility in the comments or the issues tab on the github!

News on the status of a 1.20 release
Now that 1.20 is nearing it's release date, I'm looking into what more I can do with this mod. The current plan is to remove brown and black clay, and incorporate the new kiln-based colors into all of the ceramic items.
This would most likely make the 1.20 release of the mod incompatible with any earlier versions of the mod. It will, however, remove the need to replace vanilla clayforms entirely, and would allow for better compatibility with mods such as bricklayers.
I would not expect this update anytime soon. I do not have the time or motivation to work on this mod as much.
the saucepans from this mod can't be made into mixing bowls
and mod molds from it won't fire into proper versions (IE: fishing book molds from Prim. Surv., the fireclay variants don't work)
Hi, im currently playing VS 1.19.8 and have NaturalClay and xSkills installed, when im forming pottery with the clay from NC i dont get any XP for my skill, does anyone know how to fix that?
Starrypop
I love you mod!
Please, make it compatible with Cut the Fat
Also, we can't make the mixing bowl recipe from Culinary Artillery with natural clay bowls. Bottles show invisible in cullinary artillery bottle rack.
I've been using the Rivers mod, you might have to go into Rivers config and disable "Clay expansion". I'd like to add Rivers mod compatibilty at some point, but it might be a while as I don't spend as much time modding Vintage Story.
Starrytarot figured it out as stated below by another. Rivers Mod was preventing the dropping of specific clays. i have removed rivers and it works now.
Starrytarot I don't have any mod that changes clay as far as I know (not counting this one), including bricklayers and more clay.When i check the handbook is doesn't display black clay as an item. I've checked my modlist and
Dzieciol Kolljak I haven't been able to recreate this bug, are you using Bricklayers or More Clay? Those mods are not compatibile with Natural Clay
black clay,as an item dropped by the clay in the soil doesn't appear in the game
Black Clay does not appear to be dropping clay. reinstalled just to be sure. is this intended?
I loaded up a world I haven't used in a while and suddenly half of the clay form recipes used vanilla blue clay textures, I was using red clay at the time, created another world to see if issue persisted and it did
It was working perfectly before and I havent made any changes to my modlist since then
I think I fixed my planter soil texture glitch. In the mod folder: assets>naturalclay>blocktypes>clay>planter I added "game:block/clay/planter/soil" next to the soil textures for burnt ceramic. Before, the "game:" was missing. Seems fixed for me :)
drakray that fixed it for me, thank you!
rumils I don't have this problem anymore, after changing "maxTextureAtlasWidth" and "maxTextureAtlasHeight" to 8192 in clientsettings.json
I'm not sure if this is what fixed it though, might have been updates from many mods, of changes in my settings
drakray hi, have you figured out what the weird texture issue was? i'm experiencing it too, but cant figure out how to fix it :(
Found an issue within /assets/lang/en.json and have reported it to git:
https://github.com/starrypop/Natural-Clay/issues/10
love this mod! thank you so much for this. only thing bugging me is that the big planters (when planted) have missing textures where the soil should be.
i love this mod so much. recently Cut the Fat came out and its crafting recipes for oil lamps and sealed crocks don't work with the natural clay ones. definitely a compatibility i'd like to see! :)
Really loving this mod! A few things I've noticed:
EDIT:
Starrytarot, did some testing, and the following mods (in my personal pack) have clayforming not supported by Red/Brown/Black clay:
-Quarry mod (splitter mold, available in blue&fire, normally blue in color, now black)
-Rustbound (all clayforming available in blue only, normally blue in color, now black)
-Alchemy (flask, available in blue&fire, normally blue in color, now black)
-Nail&Strips (nail&strips mold, available in blue&fire, normally blue in color, now black)
Also crucible are always black in color, no matter the clay used, like the other modded clayformed stuff. Doesn't really matter in the end, but I thought you should know if you didn't already.
Thank you for your good work still, it's really nice to have all colored clay option in the wild :D
Remove the Rivers mod, and now Black Clay drop items
There is something weird with the texture, might be something else ImgurLink
Starrytarot I don't have either of those, so I'll check if another mod messes with clay
EDIT: I just checked, and I don't see "Black Clay" in the handbook, although I see the other black clay stuff like bricks and shingles
I'll check the logs if I see something
drakray Black clay should drop when mined. Make sure you don't have any other mods that affect vanilla clay, this includes More clay (Which is mostly obsoleted by this mod anyway) and Bricklayers.
Hi, I don't know if it's just me, but since the 1.1.0, I started a new world, and Black Clay don't drop anything(mined by hand or with a stone shovel).
Is that normal?
There is a lot of overlap, but I'd also love to see Bricklaters compatibility in the future. Here's hoping!
Marlim Bricklayers compatibility is being considered, but is much further off considering the overlapping scopes of the two mods. There is no compatibility planned for Conquest.
Good News, I found a silly workaround with the Toolworks problem. The problem was on the toolworks end kind of, since the crashing came from the cycling glue options displaying a dirty pot that didn't exist. I fixed the issue by simply deleting the dirtypot.json block file, so yay i guess? Gonna use it like this for now, hope that helps with any future compatibility actions (though im guessing once the dirty pot is fully implemented the issue will fix itself).
Thanks for responding so quickly btw
Do you intend to have compatibility with the Bricklayer mod and the Conquest mod?
Starrytarot
Nikuksis The issue with bottles has been fixed in the latest update
Flooper3 Dirty Pots in general are very unfinished, I should probably work on them sometime soon. For the time being, use blue cooking pots to make glue. Toolworks compatibility will have to be figured out after I fully implement cooking pots.
Hey I'm seeing a crash occur when Natural Clay is installed with Toolworks. The dirty pot in particular is causing some issues when doing the Toolworks tool hafting. Hope you can find the time to fix this lol.
I think I've figured out the problem, the molds that you're talking about are actually the molds for sling bullets, which is part of the compatibility with Bullseye. I forgot to add the dependency on bullseye, it should be fixed in the next update.
As for colored variants of the Firearms bullet molds, that will come in the future. For now, you will have to settle for the default blue color for these molds
Thauma
I meant the existence of these, I had assumed that the compatibility was broken, but it seems these molds aren't craftable.
Thauma This is a known bug, crucibles appear to be hardcoded to use the game domain, which I am avoiding to prevent unexpected compatibility bugs with other mods. This is why non-blue crucibles are uncraftable. I'll see about fixing firearms compatibility soon.
EDIT: I can't find any problems with firearms compatibility, it should be compatible with Firearms 0.5.2
Compatibily issue with Culinary artillery:
No texture for clay bottles if theres something in there.
The new crucibles do not finish smelting metal, they just get stuck at max progress and do not finish (I also cannot craft non-blue crucibles, may be a mod incompatibility but I am unsure). Also Firearms compatibility needs to be updated (Bullet molds are now Bullets molds and there is no compat for Pistol Barrel mold).
Hey, is there a version of this with just the fire clay changes/can i take the fire clay textures and just do the fire clay changes? I want natural fire clay but have bricklayers.
Not sure what happened to cause it to start but up until today everything worked fine. Everything still seems to work but the bug I have found is that if you select the Crock red/brown. in the Survival guide it will crash. other red/brown items do not seem to be doing the same such as red bottles or other red/brown. This crash has been confirmed to exist with only the Natural clay mod running.
Will this work with clay already in game from another mod?
@Shiroshvel This is a bug, but not for the same reason. I can't figure out how to add the proper amount of fuel for the storage vessels, so they just use the 4 pieces. You should still be able to fire them.
@WhiskeySunshine Whoops! Thanks for letting me know, I'll see if I can get a new version out soon to fix that.
https://hastebin.com/share/eduxodojuw.kotlin there's a crash when looking at any handbook recipe that uses bowls that seems to stem from this mod because it's pointing at a bricklayers glazed bowl that doesn't exist. I managed to track it back to the poultice recipes in natural clay which are all aiming at bricklayers items. Example below from NaturalClay-v1.0.4.zip\assets\naturalclay\recipes\grid\poultices.json:
{
"ingredientPattern": "SBS,_L_",
"ingredients": {
"B": { "type": "block", "code": "bricklayers:glazedbowl-burnt-clear-*-plain" },
"S": { "type": "item", "code": "game:powderedsulfur" },
"L": { "type": "block", "code": "game:linen-*-down" }
},
Bricklayers is not installed on this server or client, either. There may be more examples of this scattered around somewhere, I haven't taken a further look.
Edit: The same crash for the same reason happens in v1.0.5. Also, raw ingot molds and several other pit kiln recipes are still missing, much to our disappointment in making fire clay ingot molds with no way to fire them.
Fire, Red, and Brown Clay Storage Vessels are unable to be fired. Testing showed this was because they're unable to add the last layer of top fuel.
Just (accidentally) tried Bricklayers and this mod together and it does, in infact, break things.
Strelitzia There is currently no specific compatibility with Bricklayers. It's untested, but it will most likely break things. Compatibility is planned for the future, but it'll probably take more time to implement than other mods due to the overlapping scopes of both mods
AzuliBluespots Thank you for the translation! I'll put it in the next update and credit you in the description.
Alrighto, here it is, pt-br translation for the mod~
pastebin.com/xx2VaCbY
Has anyone tested this with Bricklayers yet?
YOU ARE MY SAVIOR !! I dream of this since loooong time ! In my opinion that SHOULD be in the Vanilla Game in some point !!! Thx !!! <3
I really enjoy the idea of this mod and didn't even know I wanted something like it. Thank you for your work.
I'm probably gonna have to translate that >XD Lookin' good!
Thank you so much for making this! I've been wanting a mod like this forever. I even got halfway through making something similar myself, then ran out of time and never got it finished, so I can't tell you how excited I am to see this released. I love me a good Vanilla+ mod... not too complicated but adds more variety to the game.
I love the mod.
This is already enough for me.
Unless you try to implement the remaining types of decorated clay objects like the vessels have.
