Ash conversion
The following blocks and items (and more) can be turned into plant ash:

I'll leave this here and probably make a custom patch for it as I'm not sure if the issue is with this mode, expanded matter, or wildcraft trees and shrubs, but could you reduce the conversion tempurature for leaves to be about 250C? Not 700C??
It takes almost an entire stack of firewood to make 1 plant ash... Seems very odd and is not a very efficient recipe? Or am I missing something?
Yeah, reducing the temp for leaves and mulch etc. could work.
The reason why it takes sooo long is because of the VS firepit change that now needs to heat the whole stack before converting it and this also lenghtend all conversion times by 30% :-(
I'll see what I can do for the next release to mitigate this.
Thank you!
I've been trying to cook a little bit of plant debris into plant ash, but it never ends up completing? I tried a stack of 24, that "cooked" but it never completed. I reduced it down to a stack of 8 but it still didn't complete. While I have other mods, none touch the plant debris item so there shouldn't be a conflict.
That is strange, I can replicate this, but have no explanation why this doesn't work. I'll think of a fix. Thank you for the report!
plantdebris has a "transitionalProps", and when this is present, the conversion in campfire is broken by VS. I've posted some info about this to a team member but do not have the resources to do a full bug report.
Also, I can't fix this really, either debris can never turn into rot, or it can never turn into ash. Let's hope the VS team fixes this.
OverlordJacob You need to put it into a fire pit - but the recipe is only active if you install ImGUI and ConfigLib and enable "craft potash" in the Mod Settings.
ividyon Btw, the "third version of wood ash" in EM is the same as Valley of Ashes uses - when you install this mod, it simply enabled the ash items from EM. So there are only 2, this one here and the one from Soap and Lye - which I hope the author of Soap and Lye can make compatible some time. Edit: Valley of Ashes now has that compatibility build in for "Soap&Lye Continued" but not (yet) for "Charcoal Reforged".
how exactly do you turn ash sludge into potash? "dry with medium heat" dosent really help much.
Hey, this looks great. Would it be possible for this mod to act as a compatibility layer between "Soap and Lye" and "Charcoal Reforged", and take command of their respective usages of wood ash, replacing them with the Expanded Matter variant?
I am currently running all three mods (excluding Valley of Ashes for now), so I have two separate types of Wood Ash, with apparently a third one hiding away in Expanded Matter that isn't enabled yet.
EDIT: The author rejected this on Discord due to lacking time.
Tels Actually, I realized after your comment that it's actually In Dappled Groves that adds the bark that I was referring to and the Wildcraft tree barks are just a compat feature in IDG, though it's good that it ended up making you also add compat for a different mod with similar mechanics lol.
abculatter_2 Bark is from Ancient Tools :) It can also be already turned into fertilizer, so I will not add this to VoA. But you will be able to turn "bark ash" into "ash sludge" and then continue from there on.
abculatter_2 Wildcraft canes should already be working, I'll that I add the dried leaves, which are "newer" items. I couldn't find "bark" as an item from Wildcraft: Trees and Shrubs?
SilverEyeWolf The "ash" items are actually all inside Expanded Matter² (em), a library mod that can be used by any mod out there. Vallay or Ashes just enables and uses them.
It would be the other mod's authors responsibility to either A) depend on em and replace their ash with it, or B) make their mods compatible with em somehow. That is what the library mod was designed for, it's a shame that everybody re-invents the wheel in their own mods, but nothing I can really do about.
Just a quick compat suggestion, what about adding Wilcraft's bark, canes, and dried leaves as options for burning into ashes?
Tels Both mods use ashes in some shape or form, so dose Ancient Tools right now. It will be nice to use them in both ways. No pressure tho.
SilverEyeWolf The oils mod sadly seems outdated. What exactly do you mean by compatibility?
Hello, can we have compatilility with https://mods.vintagestory.at/oils ?
RowanSkie If it was just about drying, yeah, but potash needs also be cooked in a pot (hence the name!) and I wanted the process to be kinda realistic, as potash is quite OP. (Unfortunately, it is not possible to set the cooking time or temperature for cooking recipes, so this was quite spoiling the idea...) I'm open for other suggestions, tho :)
Wouldn't the drying process also work better by using vanilla drying systems like those for bowstaves and cheese?
It should, it just adds recipes for items that are already in Expanded Matter. If there is anything not working or throwing errors, please ping me on Discord and I'll fix them.
Does this work in 1.20.x?

I just updated my old potash making mod and incidentally added the ability to use lye for leathermaking, if you want that feature. I think it's reasonably balanced, since you need 25 logs plus additional fuel to burn them for a barrel of lye. Plus sealing it for 12 hours. Lime and borax are more convenient if they are available, especially if you have a windmill to auto grind it all. I know people who use homemade wood ash lye for bucking hides, all it takes is a strong enough alkaline solution.

Awesome, thank you for this :)
Please see here for a discussion VS Discord - Valley of Ashes
Michael00181 Not yet, and if I add it, care needs to be take to not destroy the VS progression that you need lime to make limewater and leather.
can we make lye from ash to use in leather making using this mod?
