Wilderlands Deposit Scarcity

A utility module within the Wilderlands ecosystem.

**Notice: This mod will no longer be updated/maintained. The features contained in this mod have been moved to a new project:  Wilderlands Geology

Simply put:

There is far too much ore available in the default world for my taste.

This mod does something about it.

Developed for Vintage Story, Wilderlands Deposit Scarcity dramatically reduces ore abundance and reshapes deposit distribution to make mining more meaningful and exploration more necessary.

Design Philosophy

The goal is to make:

  • Trade more valuable

  • Exploration more important

  • Ruin scavenging more impactful

  • Panning more worthwhile

  • Mining operations more deliberate

Especially early on, players should not be able to rely on abundant nearby deposits.

Large iron deposits in particular may require:

  • Traveling significant distances

  • Establishing remote mining sites

  • Coordinated transport logistics

On multiplayer servers, this encourages infrastructure and cooperation.

World Generation Changes

Wilderlands Deposit Scarcity modifies deposit spawn rates and size variability across the board.

Core Adjustments

  • All ore and coal deposit spawn chances reduced to ¼ of default values (less for some types)

  • Iron deposit spawn chances reduced significantly more than ¼

  • Greater variance in deposit sizes

  • Some smaller iron deposits can generate closer to the surface in certain rock strata

  • Some iron deposits can generate much larger than vanilla

  • Some copper deposits can generate very large

The world contains fewer deposits overall — but greater diversity in scale.

Ore becomes something you work for, not something you trip over.

World Config Compatibility

The mod establishes a rare baseline.

You can further modify abundance using the Global Deposit Spawn Rate setting when creating a world:

  • Increase it for a more forgiving experience

  • Decrease it for harsher scarcity gameplay

Compatibility

Compatible with:

  • Geology Addons
(Includes proportional adjustments to GeoAddons deposit spawn rates.)

⚠ Not compatible with early versions of Wilderlands Tweaks (pre-Dev4).
Always use the latest releases.

Recommended Pairing

For a fully scarcity-driven experience, consider pairing with:

  • Wilderlands Panning Overhaul

The two were designed to complement one another, though each functions independently.

Do you think you could make a lite version that isn't so punishing for finding bits? I get the ore being more rare and I do enjoy that but we tried a few different seeds and couldn't find a single bit within a 3000 block range every direction. We even tested using xray and flying and couldnt find any bits doing that. I do want more difficulty but this is a bit much.

RosstheGreat Sounds great! I'll take a look when I have some time. Really like the way ore veins generate, just want to reign certain features in so they play nice with what I'm trying to build.

Thalius Just a heads up, new versions of IOG don't have the nuggets and there are config options to change the scarcety of ores to whatever you want within a single Floating Point number (up to 0.99x less ore deposits), and the new(er) boulders/prospecting system I implemented.

Gotcha, thank you for the prompt response! Thalius

RangerTau No, they are not compatible. Interesting Ore Gen overrides this mod's patches. And, quite honestly, is the polar opposite of scarcer ores. We tested it on our servers on a few worlds. Ore generation chagnes are very interesting, but ore was everywhere. And I do mean everywhere. Surface nuggets all over the surface, even for very deep ore deposits, not just shallow ones. And there were huge areas covered in surface nuggets.

The deposits themselves were interesting to dig into, but it was just too much. And no way to adjust it outside of the basic worldgen menu options (which even at 20% still gives a ton of ores, hence this Deposit Scarcity mod).

Hey, I'm curious how this would interact with Interesting ore gen - Both tweak deposit scarcity, so I assume they wouldn't be compatible?

oh ok i appreciate the quickness man.

It is a feature, not a bug.

This mod greatly reduces the loose native copper that spawns on the surface. Copper deposits still spawn near the surface, but are not usually indicated by native copper surface stones. It can still happen, but it is very rare.

We are using a pretty extensive modlist so ill have to test to see what mod exactly messes with it, I'll try to get back to you about it.

a couple of friends and I were looking for at least 4 hours without finding copper bits in surface stones so I had a hunch and removed the mod made a new game and

found native copper bits within a few minutes. I am simply unsure of the cause.

Donovar How so? This is the first I've heard of this.

Donovar, Feb 3rd 2025 at 8:53 PM

It seems to break surface copper spawns
