Hide And Fabric Mod v1.3.0
This mod adds individual animal hides for each species and animal hide/fur clothing articles, additional fibre crops and plant fibre fabric, wool and sheep shearing and more.
Use animal hides to create warm fur clothing!
Gather new plant fibre crops that provide an alternative to flax!
You can also discover jute growing wild in areas between 14-45 degrees C, 30-80% rainfall and up to 70% forestation, jute fibres can be turned into coarse, scratchy but tough burlap cloth that can't be used to make armour but can be used in almost every other recipe you can use flax/linen in. Burlap cloth is required to construct standing large burlap sacks which serve as an improved form of food storage, providing useful decay reduction to protein and fruit foods contained within.
Raise sheep and shear their wool as an alternative source of fabric!
As you continue to breed your sheep up to generation 4 and beyond you may find your bighorn ewes have given birth to a domestic sheep lamb! Domestic sheep grow wool quicker, can hold more wool between shearings, have a higher generation wool growth/capacity cap and importantly are less aggressive than bighorn sheep!.
You can use wool twine, fabric blocks and cloth for all the same purposes that you can use cotton for which is most of the recipes you can use linen in. Like cotton, you can make a woolen tunic, leggings, shoes, overcoat, parka, gloves, mittens and neckscarf from the cloth or dye it to produce chairs, neckscarves and tailored gambeson armour in your favourite colour.
Make and wear cool and functional clothing, and tough armour!
Wolf and bear furs can be used to create armour sets which provide more protection than leather armour, being roughly equvilent or slightly better than gambeson

If you are using Ancient Tools I was able to get compatability with a quick edit in Ancient Tools. If you are comfortable going into the json files.
I am not a modder so your milage may vary.

Is there a way to get the wolf/bear head-shaped armor? As far as I can tell, there's only recipes to fix them. Are they a rare drop?

Hello ! just reporting that the bear fur (black) and prolly more look weird when holding them (they appear in the middle of the character).
Does that mean Tailor's Delight fixes the domesticated sheep issue?

This mod generally works under 1.19.7 or 1.19.8 - it still has some bugs (like domesticated sheep not beeing able to eat from troughs) but many of these small bugs and missing recipes are fixed by my mod Tailor's Delight - in combination both mods work very well.
I depended on this mod, but its okay if its not seeing much support. Hope it fixes

OscarK I don't know why this is happening, it's a really weird error but I have a hunch it's a texture atlas overflow- you can increase the size of your texture atlas in your settings
Abby_Pyrrho The lack of diet definition is an issue and it'll be resolved in the upcoming update
Though the progress for that update is going significantly slower than I'd like it is in fact progressing, if I get too frustrated with it I may just release the WIP version I currently have and let the users find all the bugs in it
Catasteroid I don't see the domestic sheep having a diet when i look through the json. As such, the nice pretty sheep we waited so long for can no longer eat and mate. Otherwise, pretty cool mod!
@Catasteroid I'm having issues with water wheels from medieval expansion rendering as pink and yellow when I have hides and fabric turned on, is there something I have missed? Hope you're doing well :)
Catasteroid How about a way to farm cobwebs? Like, have naturally generated cobwebs give a very small chance to drop spider eggs which you can then surround with spider silk in a crafting grid to make a coccoon and place it in a dark area. With a low enough chance it'd still be unsustainable in the long run too.
Hinochi I haven't touched Spider Silk yet as I'm not sure what I could meaningfully add to it beyond making minor changes for the sake of it
However I have already prepared an update for More Bags that has a lot of new content; it will use the new cloth type and adds a new level of bag that occupies a niche between the iron framed packs and the vanilla bags, with the iron framed packs being bumped up a few slots to account for the time and resource investment required to produce the iron pack frames, I'm debating whether to make the iron backpack frame's smithing recipe more complex to account for the extra slots you get out of it

MissKittah I'm getting together the content for the 1.4.0 update, on top of the wide array of new content (with potential compatibility with some of the content in the Fauna of the stone age modules) it'll fix a few outstanding issues including the fox hide recipes, twine use in recipes, female domestic sheep not being shearable, mismatches in the shearable generation in bighorn sheep among others, and make some other adjustments. There may even be some swanky new clothes and armour in there too, it won't be too long now
is there ever going to be an update for this mod? i would love to use it!!! it looks like it adds so much for the tailoring class and ive been dying for some tailoring variety

I just got the game a couple weeks ago. I'm excited to add this mod to it, but I'll be waiting until the update mentioned in a comment on Jan 24 drops. Is there a way one can follow this mod and receive updates or does one have to remember the name and come back to look later?

Besides the fox issue, the sheep also need a small update. My server log spams this every few minutes:

@Kessem The mod already works, technically(I've been using it anyways), but in the past, Ihad no issues adding it mid-game, so I imagine it'll be that way when it's updated. But always create a backup of your save, when you add new mods, anyway. Just in case.
once it's updated, how safe/workable would it be to add this mod to an existing world?
LadyEdain Foxes were changed in 1.19 which has probably made the texture names different which would break the textures, an update is in progress which resolves this issue among others, hang in there folks
I just upgraded to the new 1.19 release and I noticed that my stored fox hides are not displaying correctly; they have turned white with like pink bits. My fox fur had has also turned white. I have a lot of other hides stored, and they all seem okay. I made some bear hide armor without an issue. As far as I know, the fox furs still work, the texture is just wonky.
Maybe that'll be cool is too add option to work with bone and add bone tribal/primitive armor and clothing
I did try to rebuild it for net7, without code changes, and it still causes crashes with handbook, in code that was added for 1.19.0pre1 per git history.
i love this mod, using on 1.18.5 but i do have a problem, the lamellae armor is uncraftable. the difference between pelts and raw hide. otherwise lve this mod!
No Complaint since you have not compiled it for 1.19-pre. The handbook entries crash the game.

bumblebink Ah I see, I was considering updating Hide and Fabric to recompile the shearing code anyway so I'll see if I can put in a compatibility patch for Ancient Tools to try and resolve the conflict
There's a slight conflict w/ the Ancient Tools mod because this mod replaces the "drops" bit of game:entities/land/bear.json with "dropsByType". Not familiar enough w/ modding to patch it myself.
The majority of content should still function in 1.18.15 and 1.19 prerelease versions but the shearing code may not necessarily function properly without a recompile, I can't yet successfully (re)compile my code for .net 7 but I'm trying to find a workaround in the mean time.

It seems that the all bear boots recipes aren't working. I thought maybe it was my knife so I made a new one and that didn't work. I put in a fox pelt and I was able to produce those.
How do you make the wolf head helmet? And I think the Wolf Hide Helmet looks a bit weird tbh, is it supposed to look like this?

Domestic sheep that are killed do not change to bones following butchering. The bodies are persisting for some time before turning to bone, during which they are shearable multiple times

Can i suggest a nerf to the wolf armor?
Right now a wolf armor is just as good as tailored gambeson that takes much more time to get. perhaps bring down the wolf armor to be more inline with the normal gambeson?
Please implement wool cloaks of various colors similar to the grass cloak you've added to this mod. I absolutely adore that you added an Otzi the iceman style grass cloak for the stone age but I would really like woolen cloaks for iron age and medieval type feel. Some proper woolen tunics that are about knee length would also be really cool, I love this mod dearly.
There's currently (1.2.9) a mismatch between the server and the client behaviour for the bighorns.
Client says minGen = 2, which means at gen 2 you get the tooltip saying it's shearable but server says minGen = 3 so when you try, nothing happens.
Yanazake It's very much possible, I actually left a text file some info for other modders in the zip file but it looks like they didn't wind up using it, I might have to add the compatibility features myself
I wonder if there could be some compatibility to shear alpacas, or maybe if it's safe to have the mod they're from at all

I don't know if it's just me, but I can't seem to see any recipe to craft any of the garments, excepting one for the new Bear Helmet; I checked the mod files I downloaded, and there ARE recipes in the zip, I just can't seem to see them upon using the 'H' button and searching/using 'H' on an Arctic Fox fur to see associated crafts. Am I missing something? Is there a guide or screenshot to show me the recipe patterns? Thank you for this great mod!
(Development: I reverted to the previous version of this mod (v1.2.7) and success! I can now see Arctic Fox fur recipes, and various other recipes!))
Just curious can these clothes also be bought or sold to clothing traders as well? If not that would be a really neat feature :3

PhyDoesStuff I had to double check as it looks I've already resolved the first two of those specific issues for the upcoming 1.2.8 but forgot I did it, I'll add recipes that include jute twine to hide caps now
Found a bad texture ref:

There doesn't seem to be a textures/entity/bear folder at all. While looking around to try to find that errant bear image, I also found that there's a "raw - Copy.png" file (copy of raw.png) in textures/item/resource/hide.
Additionally, I was curious why bear fur boots can only be made with jute, cotton, and wool thread, while other boots made with specific animal pelts can also use flax in addition to the new fabric types. An intentional design decision? Hide caps in general also don't seem to be able to use jute thread in their crafting, in case that's also an issue.

SIN1K The recipe for turning bear hides into normal huge hides was absent in version 1.2.6, I've uploaded version 1.2.7 which addresses this among other issues (including the missing textures other users have been reporting)
Not sure if it's just me or if others are having the same issue, but can't seem to turn bear hides into normal huge hide. Is there a process to it or am I missing something? I tried placing it in the crafting grid on its own and even with a knife but doesn't seem to revert back to hide unlike the other animal hides. Regardless though, really appreciate your work on this mod Catasteroid 😁
WickedSchnitzel I've got version 1.2.7 in the works that fixes these bad texture references, I'm just working out some details with wool shearing like adding the red floating error messages you get when trying to milk a stressed sheep or if you try to place a block when there's someone or something in the way. I'll be publishing it soon
There are also several items with a missing texture, e.g. some bear hides, boots etc. What about these?

I noticed that the hideandfabric/crop.json file is missing a comma at the end of line 30, which causes a parsing error.

Kirona Thanks for reporting that, I've fixed the issue. I had reduced the minimum shearing generation to 0 and the regrowth time to do some debugging but it looks like I never set it back to it's original values
In 1.17.0-rc.3 sheep can be sheared at generation 0 right now

McBain Are you using version 1.2.2 or older? There was an issue in those versions where the shearing data wasn't being saved properly leading to it being reset repeatedly, I've uploaded version 1.2.3 which essentially redesigned how the shearing behaviour works entirely and the data is now retained when the sheep are unloaded and saved to the server. This has come at the cost (for now) of no longer being able to give numerical information on when the sheep is ready to shear, I'd recommend updating immediately.
The time to shear sheep seems to reset to 14 days every time the chunk the sheep are in is resent by the server. This happens every time the game file is loaded or I walk far away or I can even make it happen using /debug cs to get the chunk resent from the server. I tested it out without any other mods loaded and the behavior is consistent. If the chunk stays loaded long enough the timer completes and you can shear the sheep but this makes this a rare event in normal survival play.

Unsure if this is just on my end or not, but various things (fur hats, fur boots, scarves, some other things I probably forgot) don't have any warmth, or at least no warmth indicator when moused over since v1.2.2
Again, this might just be on my end, though I'm not sure how.

The texture pngs use "grey", so just a naming issue

PeterSanderson I've reuploaded version 1.2.1 with fixes for the language file lines and recipes for silk mittens/gloves
A search under mittens in the handbook shows "hideandfabric:item-clothes-hand-silk-mitten"
I'm assuming this is interfacing with the Spider Silk mod, but the item appears uncraftable at the moment.
ate0ate Do you mean the placeable pelts and stuff? They don't drop as items from Primitve Survival afaik, you get them by placing oiled hides. It randomises based on what size pelt you use. Likewise if you break them they drop as regular pelts, not the item.
Greetings Catasteroid! I absolutely love the mod but had one tiny compatibilty issue. I pestered SpearandFang about this earlier and they stated that the issue was rather complicated to fix (which is fine) so I figured I'd run it by you as well. When using Hide and Fabric along with Primitive Survival both mods create unique hides that drop from various animals but only the hides from Hide and Fabric actually drop in-game. The pelts used in Primitive survival can be used as decorative items on floors and walls so it would be nice if the mods could somehow play nicely together. Its certainly not game breaking since it seems it just results in missing decorative items, but not losing that would be pretty nice too. No problem at all if this is an issue that cannot be fixed or is just far too involved, I just thought it worth asking. Either way, I thank you for your work here!

JaeSaber Which version of the mod are you running? If I remember correctly I fixed this issue with the 1.0.1 release, download the latest version and if it still crashes let me know
When opening medium hides in the hand book it crashes my game

I've begun work on version 1.2.0 and it will include more cold weather clothing including warm woolen clothes, fur jackets and less effective but still fairly warm quilted fabric clothing.

Lisabet Initially I had disabled the vanilla wolf entities and used my own which had variants like the hares and that allowed me to make wolves drop the matching hide but I went back on this decision and decided to use a generic wolf hide instead and let people customise their wolf hide boots/hats by placing them in the crafting grid in specific slots to produce a specific variant. I hadn't adjusted any of the other animals. Apologies for rendering your previously harvested hides useless- me and Craluminum2413 compiled all the different hide items into a single item with multiple variant groups to cover all the current hides and any future hides I might add. You can throw the broken hide items away by dumping the items on the ground and they'll despawn after a while. I won't be changing the hide item again so this will only be a one-time occurrance.
I'm curious if your mod forces spawns of the various animals that give fur; I see your changelog mention 'massive wolf overpopulation' and I'm actually seeing a similar issue with foxes (7 foxes chasing the same rabbit in a line is amusing but not normal :P) the game itself already spawns these animals, so is there really a need to spawn 'more' of them?
also, the latest update seems to have broken my previous furs from rabbits, a boar and a fox, they're just white squares in the chest now.

I didn't get any wolf pelts. Are they not included in this mod? I'm using version 1.0.2.

Downloaded the new patch though and it looks like the wolf hide is still messed up, as wolves don't drop anything and in the handbook it shows its name as "hideandfabric:item-wolfhide", and then there is no icon for the wolf fur cap as well.

One thing that I dislike in vanilla is that clothes, beds, textiles, etc... dont have much variability in warmth differences. And no variables beyond temp and strength. We really need more meaningful variables in this game to create more complex and challenging survival mechanisms. Its all just so easy and thus boreing currently.
Lisabet SilverBird I've corrected the raw hide recipe issue, the issue with wolf fur drops and another issue that involved traders, thank you for the feedback
also I'm not getting furs or hides at all; killed a good 15 wolves and on butchering only got meat/bones/fat
edit got the crash on trying to look at raw hides in the handbook too
I cannot turn furs into raw hides, the game crashes upon looking up recipes for raw hides.
