Go back to the time of the Gold Rush and amass riches using SCIENCE with the third installment of the Kingdom of Science series!
The technique is inspired by the mercury amalgamation gold extraction process, which was used for artisanal and small-scale mining during the Gold Rush (and is still used today, often illegally, despite it being responsible for most of the world's mercury pollution)
To extract gold with this mod:
Put in a barrel 1x pannable block (gravel or sand, but not bony soil) and 0.1L of mercury to make mercury amalgam.
Boil mercury amalgam in a boiling flask (with a setup containing: boiling flask -> retort neck) to separate the sponge gold from the mercury (add a bowl to the retort neck to recover the mercury).
You can then smelt sponge gold into gold ingots (100 for one ingot).
This method has a much better recovery rate than panning (1 ingot for 100 blocks instead of ~500) and is more convenient, but is more high-tech and doesn't produce anything else. I think that it's balanced since gold has pretty much zero use in survival (besides I guess repairing Forlorn Hope gear and selling it to traders?). Also, if you want to make it worse, you could edit the barrel recipe on the server-side mod and make it so you need 2 or more sand/gravel to make mercury amalgam.

The process seems to still be working in 1.19. Reading into the sketchy use of amalgamation I think there's a great deal of additional depth that's needed like Health effects when heating/storing mercury in enclosed spaces, black sand to increase gold yield, mercury on sluices lol. That said I understand that modding is hard and finding time to do it can be impossible. I love the concept and would love to see more
Considering black bronze won't need whole ingots to smelt, this is actually pretty handy, but yeah, I feel this is going to beg more complex recipes for gold to exist. Low odds of large scale environmental catastrophe from people stripmining beaches, therefor.
If anything I would say maybe the recovery rate is a little TOO low.
Because at least with normal panning you get drops when you don't find a gold. With this you get nothing.
Might be worth considering either increasing the chances or adding secondary drops to make it more worth doing.
EDIT: But then again, a 5x increase to the drop rate of gold isn't nothing either. Gold is pretty valuable in trading.
