Creatures featured are :
Alpacas - They can be found in mountainous terrain almost everywhere, can be bred and milked
Cassowary - They can be found in the jungle, you can steal their eggs to raise your own but it's not recomended for the not so brave..
Camels - They can be found at the edges of deserts in very hot places, can be bred and milked, feed them grain in a large trough, provides fat
Caribou - They can be found at the edges of freezing forested places, can be bred and milked, feed them grain in a large trough, provides fat
Cochineal bugs - They live in dry hot places and can be eaten or used to make red dye
Crawfish - They spawn in swampy places within the cooper reeds
Crickets - They chirp and can climb any surface like all bugs in the mod
Crocodiles - They spawn in warmer climates in water, will kill most things they see moving. Their leather makes good bags and nice boots.
You can sometimes find stray fertile croc eggs in the waters where crocs are, take these home to raise your own croc.
Dragonflies - They spawn where you'd expect them to, in swampy places with reeds
Elephants - They can be found in warm climated areas near shrub or jungles, can be bred for meat but they hit like freight trains be careful
Frogs - They can be found in water, anywhere it's temperate to hot, a little derpy but I"m still working on a good amphibian ai π€
Garden Snails & Slugs - Snail shells can be ground into lime, snails and slugs can be cooked into escargot
Geckos - They spawn in caves and can traverse in there very well, cook them and eat them if you want
Glow worms - They can be found when breaking hanging glow worms, they can be put into pies
Grasshoppers - They chirp and will start to fly away from you if you get to close
Hamsters - They spawn around the edges of deserts, they don't give much in resources so best to let them be
Hippos - They spawn in warm waters and are very dangerous, best to leave them be
Honey Badgers - They spawn in warm climates, they aren't afraid to attack anything that bothers them
Hummingbirds - They will spawn any where mild or warm and chase each other and dragonflies around, they'll stop at flowers to drink
Jellyfish - They spawn in those deep lakes you find every now and then, they glow in the dark and are edible raw or cooked
Kiwi birds - They are found in very warm climates, they can be fed grains from a small trough to encourage egg laying but cannot be bred, yet..
Komodo Dragons - They spawn in very hot climates, their hide can be used to make an upgraded leather armor set
Mosquitoes - They spawn near swampy terrain in small swarms, annoying but not deadly, run away to escape their constant humming
Moths - They're like butterflies except they appear at night
Pumas - They can be found almost everywhere but prefer mountainous places
Roly Polies - They can be found in caves and will curl up if you scare them
Salamanders - They can be found in forests ( 4 of them can, 1 is in caves ) and will climb anything to get away from you
Sea snails - They can be found in any open water, they have made homes out of all those shells laying around
Sparrows - They can be found anywhere temperate and will sing and fly around, you know, like birds do
Squirrels - Squirrels live in forested places and can climb trees fast to get away from you ( I know they can be derpy lol )
Starfish - All those starfish laying around could actually be a living one now
Tigers - They spawn in warmer climated jungles, very deadly, very fast, I'd probably just avoid them if I were you.. π , will spawn in families so if you see a cub run, run fast and far..
Toads - They can be found anywhere except snowy places, even deep in caves. They chirp and hunt, kill and eat all bugs, I wouldn't eat one if I were you.. four variants to be found
Tortoises - They can be found in warm places within bushy areas, they drop turtle meat and adults drop shells which can be used to make a nice early shield. Tortoises lay their eggs in dirt mounds of mud and grass, break these open to get some tortoise eggs and maybe a few live babies. These babies will be infatuated with you and follow you around, albeit very slowly. Feed them cabbage from a large trough to get them to bury egg mounds, although they wont want to do it very often so you'll have to wait a few days maybe even a week
Chickens - chickens will dart after a cricket or grasshopper when they see one to try to eat it
Cooking - Almost all of these animals provide some form of nutrients, I wanted the game world to feel real and immersive. Most of them give something to be cooked or even an ingredient usable in pies or even in every meal available. Try glazing some cooked crickets in honey or mixing several bugs and meats together in a stew, there's tons more to eat.
Thank you for trying out my mod, I've put a lot of hard work into it and plan to keep going for as long as I can. Modding Vintage Story has given me great enjoyment and I hope others can find fun in modding like I have so my mod is code free simply so newcomers can take a look inside and get an idea of how to do or make the things I have made. My config file is code but I'd be happy to show how it was done if asked.
The config file gives you the ability to disable any creature and also set any chunk & runtime spawn per creature

To everyone who's posted below: This mod is for VS 1.16 - we're currently (7th of may 2024) on VS 1.19.7
So consider it "abandoned" until updated!
The mod has been "updated" by two other people:

Hello! Just wanted to let you know that
the toads are bugged. They
make a croaking sound, but then they
follow
this up with another sound like uncontrollable sobbing
and then my game crashes with the 'wail'
getting 'drawing out' for a few seconds before a half-color picture of a
grey lady with way too many
teeth freezes on the screen

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that the toads are bugged. They make their ribbit sound, then it makes a sound like "deposit photo"? I'm not 100% sure what it says but I don't think they're supposed to make that noise!
Did the mod need to be add on a new map or it will work on an already existing save?

May I suggest more animals such as Ducks, Seagulls, Seals, Giraffes and Rhinos, basic (house)Dog and (house)Cat types too? Great idea for a mod that adds a lot of life to the game.

There is an unofficial version available in the mod DB. It still works perfectly! I was surprised when I saw hippos for the first time when testing mods in 1.18 RC8!

Would it be possible to update this fantastic mod to version 1.18?
can the recipe for the croc skin backpack be changed to allow for papyrus, makes sense as crocodiles in warm climates, papyrus only in warm climates, right?

There's a temp mod for this repackaged for 1.7. Creatures and Critters Unofficial. It has a couple lags, if it doesnt boot up right the first time try a couple times again. Working for me right now!

Absolutely Loving the mod.
Though, are Elephants supposed to congregate in herds of 60+ animals? Because it is seriously tanking my frame rate. Even just kulling them with /entity removebytype elephant-* didn't help because more would immediatly spawn in. T-T I'm going to have to disable them.
ok, the Toads sound clip was like 100% taken from a TV show, or something, at the VERY end of the toad sound clip, you can hear a "impossible"
But here are some issues i noticed:
- Creatures like to "hang" and keep trying to keep running until you remove the obstacle (or kill them).
- Mosquitoes (i think this annoying alien sound with some buzzing are mosquitoes) seems to be WAAAAY TOO LOUD! You need to reduce the sound by factor of 10...20.
- Hippos are extrem loud too!
- Crocodiles babies are also very loud and the sounds are too often. Maybe because they also like to get stuck in obstacles and I was close by.
Nuk_17 - if you use Primitive Survival, a row of snares, baited or otherwise, along the fenceline, will get most of the squirrels, as well as just about anything else. Resetting them can be a bit of a pain, but effective so far and extra meat, skin and bones.

Speaking of extra meat, the baby squirrels seem to be giving similar drops to the adults. Is that intended or have I just been stupid lucky?

Looks like the meal patches need the "-" after the "validStacks" value, instead of numbers. Like MoreCrops has.
captured kiwi birds twice, brought them home and they despawned or somehow escaped (first time the pen was a 1 high fence, second time it was 2 high in case they jumped somehow) is there any way to keep them from despawning?
Not 100% sure if this is the cause, but our cows are no longer able to eat from troughs. All the applicable creatures from here and the pigs and sheep still can, but since we updated to 1.2.0 the cows cannot and are not listed on the trough description
squirrels will climb over fencing to get to crops, which is unsurprisingly extremely irritating with no way to scare them off
new animals are not spawning in my world like elephants, camels, crocs, hippos, tigers, crosswary,tortoises,salamanders, honey bagders, jellyfish etc. i also have 2 animals mods, lichen and midieval expansion so i dont know if they are interfering with this mod. i have about like 20-30 mods. so i dont know what is causing the issue.
Yes, that's right.We can't handle it until the other mods.
But if a water update comes to vanilla and adds a breathing element, the same animals will likely suffocate on their own.
The crocodile's small attack range was intentional. Understood.I look forward to future updates.π
@ macoto_hino crocs attack range is pretty low, I want them to stay in the water for reasons, not sure what to do about gas mod, never planned for something like that lol
It is an environmental issue here, but when we introduce Asphyxia (Gas API), animals are often suffocating to death by sticking their heads in trees.
Elephants in particular often die on their own because of their large bodies.
And I think the black dolphins should attack more other animals that come to the water's edge.
I felt odd about the crocodiles not attacking at all even though there are herbivores nearby, so I'm reporting it anyway.π

How about legendary animals that have limited spawn conditions and you have to find those exact conditions to find them

Irish Elk or Woolly Rhino
Woolly Mammoth in very cold tiaga forest
Terror bird in savanna

@ Sindanarmo it needs to be -28 to -60 to find them, they're pretty rare but they spawn in groups of 1 male, 3 females and 3 calfs
Hello, how far north I need to be to meet a caribou? Because I'm wandering second ingame day in coordinates -37000 ish (so pretty far north) on an edge of a very big forest and didn't seen any so far xD
the next update is just going to be an optimization update, might add something new too but I want to add control for spawn rates to the config file for ease of control mostly. I'm also gonna add some more animations to some of the animals to bring even more life to the game

Camels and caribou shouldn't be long now, they are extreme hot and cold animals meant for an immersive feeling when playing extreme hot or cold games. Both milkable and they both provide more fat then other animals

also I'm creating an add-on mod that requires Pet AI which makes certain animals into pack animals, right now it'll just be alpacas but I'll add more, like camels when I create those and elk for those arctic playthroughs
shouldn't be too much longer on 1.1.8, got a lot of stuff to comb over then we're all good

got salamanders and moths coming so far, oh and alpaca color variations, I'm doing a few more things then I'll release 1.1.8

@ Ryker moose is on my list, just tested crawfish in soup and it's working, you must have a conflict somewhere, it goes in the crock just fine too I just made crawfish carrot soup and put it in a crock no problems
Two ideas: Moose for colder northern climates?
And for Crawfish, I tried adding some to soup, but it didn't seem to work? Also couldn't put the meal I made using them instead into a Crock, no clue if that's not supposed to be possible or not.

@ Shion I don't have foals in my mod, I'll lessen the amount of times alpacas make sounds
Dead foal doesn't seem to have a death animation/state. It just stands there as usual and can be harvested for stuff.
Alpacas are still annoying too.

I forgot to quiet the sounds, will be in the next update, also I didnt mean to disable red dye and that will be fixed too, if you need red dye fixed now put this in CC's assets\game\recipes\barrel\dye red.json

hussar Pet AI adds that kind of functionallity. Its supposed to be open enough to allow 3rd parties to add funtionality to any animal. I've been considering making foxes tameable but haven't put the effort into figuring it out yet. If you wanted to, look at both Pet AI and the companion mod Wolf Taming. There is equipment added in Wolf Taming that allows you to use tamed wolves as pack animals.
Alpacas are very loud for some weird reason..
next up is hippos and komodo dragons, I'll do some cold climate things next I promise π
@ hussar that would require some code which I don't want to add to the mod if I can help it but there is other modders who could do that to them with a seperate mod for sure
I've been dreaming for a long time of pack animals--an animal that can be tamed to follow you and carry inventory. Both alpacas and elephants would work. If there's any way to add inventory slots to a mob, that would be incredible!
next up is breedable elephants and breedable alpacas, the alpacas also give milk

Sparrows definitely better now - see and hear them from time to time :) Still didn't see any crawfish tho xD
up next is crocodiles for sure, it's almost ready actually. Gonna do a few more things like fixing the frogs sitting while in water

I updated the config.dll but forgot to put the new patch that it goes with so roly polies, sparrows and toads cannot be disabled until 1.1.3 comes out, if you really need to disable one or all of them put this file in assets/game/patches to remedy it disableentities.json
just scanning over the new things, got sparrows, toads and roly polies coming, making more of the creatures attack or hunt one another, making them actually eat what they kill ( no more free dead bugs laying around sorry π )
got sparrows ready and waiting, and roly polies are almost done, gonna rack up a few more before the next update
my tortoise shield has off center texturing.. crap lol, will be fixed next update or sooner we'll see

@ iotid thank you, I could try to come up with an item that gives you the creative menu versions of smaller things like a net or something so it's like you've caught it and can just release the animal where you want by placing it, poison dart frogs will be coming soon enough

Just ran across the Squirrels that you added in. Brilliant. I really like the detail you have with them as well as all the other critters. Keep up the good work. was thinking, maybe make something where you could repel or trap the crickets/grasshoppers? Maybe carrion beetles to help the decay rate of animal corpses (if you want to kill to get the annoying or aggressive critter away but dont want to skin). That would help clean up random corpses done by mob hunting or them hunting a little faster, since they would advance decomp. Maybe something to enhance the gardening experience?
Absolutely loving this so far. Also second the suggestion for a few more birds for livening up trees and forests. Spotting hummingbirds and the new snails/shellfish around just makes me happy. I'd love to be able to pick up small creatures without killing them somehow, for relocation and collection. While some could theoretically be added to Gerste's cages config, support built into this mod for live capture - like a net? - would be fun. Aquariums, terrariums, and bird cages would be wonderful for display and decoration, or making room dividers to show things off. I've already been thinking about designing enclosed water spaces in glass for making makeshift aquariums in hopes of getting snails to spawn in there. (Or even just being able to catch crickets and grasshoppers live to throw them into the chicken pen to pretend like it's enrichment would be amusing!)
Fish that spawn in with deep enough water/enough surrounding water blocks would be another lovely thing to see, though the dragonflies, shells and crawfish already are doing a great job of livening up ponds and lakes. Teeny frogs for lily pads, toads and quail for fields, and tree frogs for jungles as well, maybe?
what about nightingales and cuckoos, woodpeckers and doves? Prescribe behavior so that they occupy high places and make sounds from there. Later you can close up the nests
Also squirrels take and flees to near high places or trees.

Love your mod, use it with lichen's, wildcraft and horses and it all combined makes game so full of life, it's brilliant π Only animal I didn't see so far is a crawfish, but hope so this will change eventualy :P
I've made a config to disable each creature when version 1.1.0 comes, right now it just holds crickets and grasshoppers for people who don't wanna be bothered by chirping. I guess I could add em all on there so servers have more control over them.

I would recommend Squirrels if possible. It would actually tie in with Primitive Survival by SpearAndFang. They have tree hollows that will have seeds and stuff in it (sometimes snakes). So adding a squirrel would be nice.
doing some form of mammal next, mod needs one, not sure what to do yet though, oh and I guess I'll get crackin on that config so I can add the creepier bugs, spiders n such

@ Mamessu I'll look into making a config for disabling each creature, might take me a bit as I have no clue how to make a config yet. I have no idea how this mod and that other one behave together, if you find out and there's an issue post it here please and I'll see what I can do
Is there a config we can use to turn various options on/off? As an arachniphobe I'd like to limit spiders if they are added. Additionally, how does this interact with the branch cutters from the Nessicaries mod, which allows you to break glow-worm blocks and place them elsewhere?
I'd love to be able to turn the glow-worm portion of your mod off, as well, if the two mods are incompatible.

thank you, hummingbirds are amazing creatures that seem to be somewhat misunderstood lol; I lived in northeast kansas most of the time I lived in the state and while it got extremely hot in summer and extremely cold in winter, I personally would not consider it subtropical :P
Kansas native and I can confirm that we have hummingbirds. The portion of Kansas I live in is considered humid subtropical. But, I've also lived in the portion of Kansas that is a humid continental climate. Though the majority of the 300+ species of hummingbirds are usually found in the tropics, you can find them anywhere in North and South America, including Alaska.

actually hummingbirds aren't only tropical; I had hummingbird feeders both in washington state and kansas state in the past and got hummingbirds all the time (well not winter, but they did stick around from mid spring to mid fall) both places; now I live in hawaii which is much closer to tropical and I haven't seen any lol
she's kinda hard to see, but this is one of my washington hummingbirds

Im enjoying the evolution. Wanted to reiterate how much id like to see Birds added, even if not interactable. They are the most common animals in real life, and enjoyable to have around. Things like eagles, sparrows, robins, etc... just flying above the trees, and ducks swimming in ponds.
@ CaveSalamander I live where winter lasts 6 months a year and we have hummingbirds in the summer
Could there be a config to disable each critter individually? I run with dragonflies already in and I'd love to add grasshoppers too, but I don't feel like hummingbirds fit into non-tropical environments.
up next, kiwi birds you can feed for eggs but they don't use hen boxes so you can't breed them, insect wall crawling and cooked versions of insects. Inch worm put on shelf til I'm better at animating cause I want them to be perfect

@ YourCreator ya the grasshoppers need a bit of tweaking, they work and look alright for where they're at so I released what I had, they'll be fixed as I go on no worries. I'll look into making the OGG files quieter if it's possible sure. I can for sure try to add a wall climbing ability to both crickets and grasshoppers
