Latest file for v1.19.3:
haybales-V1.1.2.zip 1-click install

Note: latest update is cosmetic only. It has no functional changes and only updates the game version to hide the yellow checkmark in the mod manager :)

Have you ever wanted to have a functioning hay silo for your pets? Or maybe you want to clean up all that pesky dry grass you have sitting around scattered in 6 different trunks. Well have I got the mod for you. Hey! Bales! (functionally simplified to "haybales") is a quick and simple fix to allow each block to hold a stack of dry grass while being bound by twine.

This mod currently has compatibility patches for the mods listed below, but if you find an issue, please create an issue on the repo page right here!

Recipes
64 dry grass + twine/rope = 1 hay block

1 hay block = 64 dry grass

Compatability
Currently compatible with primitive survival (using cordage as a binding material) and hides and fabrics (using their twine variants)

Just an FYI: This is my first ever mod - ever! So leave some feedback and suggestions for new mods (although I have a growing list already).

Going forward I might add a couple variations of bales if I find the time to sit down and mess around with the model designer some more if there is interest in that.

Special thanks to:

Just an update: still interested in adding these newer bundles but haven't had the motivation to do the 3d editor for the blocks just yet - I am definitely not a graphic designer so the fiddling there can be a bit of a pain at times. If anyone did want to give a hand designing any bundle blocks to include in the mod let me know! I'm sure I will one day - but the rest (putting the json in to get it into the crafting grid, making a texture, etc) of it wouldn't be much of a hassle.

The easiest route without getting into the editor too much would probably just be dying the bales to look like cattails, sticks, etc - but I feel like that would be a bit lazy and sticks definitely need their own style/block design.

I'll set a reminder for the weekend to maybe hop into the designer and take some notes on other resources I would want to add to this mod to make it a more general "bundle" mod - I desperately miss being able to stack things like sticks, bones, feathers, etc on the ground (though not all of those really fit into a "bundle" style. Maybe being put into a linen sack to be stored on the ground/chest? I remember a mod that added bags of flour that did something like that in a really excellent way to store large quantities of goods

Edit: This is the mod, not sure if it still works but I also noticed there was a new "sack" mod for grain/flour mods.vintagestory.at/vintagestorysacks

conninator2000 I'd add: cattails

💬 conninator2000Author, Mar 1st at 1:12 AM

@Roidgy

Not currently possible (I didnt even know you could use chutes to fill stuff!) but I can look into it when I have some time

@mj_outlaw @Snowfall94

Thats a great idea and would be pretty easy to implement. Can definitely look into that - after coming back I noticed that with the latest update a mod I used doesn't allow you to pile sticks anymore. I'll definitely look into stick bundling. Are there any other things that would be good ideas for bundling? Bones might be a bit weird (and might just end up as some pile on the ground, without needing any material to bind them), firewood already stacks in piles... hmm let me know if you come up with any ideas or suggestions

💬 Snowfall94, Feb 27th at 10:46 AM

I absolutely agree with mj_outlaw. A sticks storage option would be fantastic as well

💬 mj_outlaw, Feb 27th at 6:48 AM

great mod, thanks! Suggestion: would be great to have something similar for sticks

💬 Roidgy, Feb 27th at 2:28 AM

Cool mod!

Are you able to fill a trough by putting a bale through a chute, or is that currently not functional?

💬 conninator2000Author, Feb 27th at 1:22 AM

Great! Since it only touches adding a recipe and a single block + texture it shouldn't be a huge issue with compatibility going forward. Ill update it to get rid of any annoying yellow triangles that might pop up in the mod manager :p

---

¡Excelente!

💬 Vinter_Nacht, Jul 21st 2023 at 4:29 PM

Your bales are very nice!

💬 conninator2000Author, Jul 4th 2023 at 2:50 AM

Thats a good idea! Ill look into it some. Upgraded trough (which would probably be its own mod) and maybe a more dynamic "hay pile" (think like medieval hay piles around a tall stick/tipi of sticks) are also some thing im interested at looking into

💬 QuakingDoom, Jul 3rd 2023 at 4:17 PM

Here's a neat idea: using a hay bale on an empty trough would completely fill it up.

💬 conninator2000Author, Jun 28th 2023 at 9:05 PM

Heh ok thats a fair point. Big box that was trying to tick was allowing bales to stack sideways without so much float to them. I slimmed the band a bit to help with that while keeping the middle part enough to still touch the adjacent blocks :p

The straps look more like wooden plates now lol. Make sure they don't protrude/sink more than 1 voxel from the surface

💬 conninator2000Author, Jun 28th 2023 at 7:00 AM

So I went back through and added compatibility for hides and fabric and decided using cordage was a good idea, thank you for the suggestion. I thought the recipe was 1 reed = 1 cordage but that isn't the case so its much more balanced than i originally thought.

Also model has also been updated to look better while stacked :p
They are a bit more bulky but still have the circular shape with the middle bulge. Let me know if you have any suggestions

Very Cool. I approve. Trying it out tonight.

💬 conninator2000Author, Jun 25th 2023 at 4:42 PM

Thanks! Its in the latest version now :)

💬 macoto_hino, Jun 25th 2023 at 1:10 AM

Thank you for your prompt response!
I only have 3 lines to thank you, but I made a Japanese file, so please use it.

If you join the Vintage Story discord channel and ask questions to other modders there, I'm sure they will be able to tell you more.

I updated the mod to add a recipe to use rope, if you are using mods that add other types of twine (like hide and fabric) I also added a compatability patch with instructions above as well. Let me know if you have any trouble with it.

macoto_hino

Also if any experienced modder knows how to create optional recipes using items that are not in the base game let me know how to integrate my patch into the base game without causing it to crash 😜

💬 conninator2000Author, Jun 24th 2023 at 5:01 AM

Thanks! I'll look into that some tomorrow since I notice it doesnt have full compatability with the other twines from mods. Probably stick to rope for balance sake

💬 macoto_hino, Jun 24th 2023 at 1:13 AM

It's not a neat straw bale of vanilla, but it's properly tied up.
I just think it's tough that the recipe calls for more flax twine in survival living.
At the very least, I would like to see vanilla rope or even cordage for Primitive Survival.

💬 conninator2000Author, Jun 23rd 2023 at 7:08 PM

Thanks! Let me know if you have any other suggestions or run into any bugs 🙂

💬 QuakingDoom, Jun 23rd 2023 at 7:05 PM

That looks significantly better! Well done, love the way it looks now.

💬 conninator2000Author, Jun 23rd 2023 at 6:27 PM

Great point! While testing i noticed that since its a bit bigger than the designated block space, overlapping textures can mess around a bit but just wanted to get something out there to get some feedback. I saw your message before you drew up the example but we came to more or less the same conclusion. I bulked up the center between the bands but am still trying to keep it in more of a circular bundle shape since I think it adds a bit more detail than a more cube-like shape while also fitting within the bounds.

Ill put out a new update now, let me know what you think!

💬 QuakingDoom, Jun 23rd 2023 at 5:09 PM

Hey! Neat mod!
I do have an idea for the model I wanted to pass on to you, though. You could improve it by making the hay fill its' cube at most (rather than being bigger than 1 block), and indenting the details, with the straps pulled in 1 voxel, sort of like how the ends of the hay already are. It would give it that "compressed" look as though the hay is kinda buldging out a bit, with the straps keeping it all compressed together, yet look less like a tube lol.

I'd provide a visual but I'm busy at the moment.

Edit: I found the time and made a visual for you. So, your current side profile (sort of a slice down the center), collision box within the selected square, is this:
Current Side Profile

However, this would look much better ingame:
Proposed side profile

💬 conninator2000Author, Jun 23rd 2023 at 5:06 PM

Yup! I found the hay to be a bit lackluster (both with how much it can store per block, and with its texture/style). This focuses on being able to: a) have a silo where the bales inside are affected by gravity b) allow for better grass storage for feeding animals over long winters or in poor climates

💬 Mendall, Jun 23rd 2023 at 1:01 PM

I'm confused. You can already combine dry grass in the crafting grid to create hay bails. 4 dry grass in a 2x2 square in the grafting grid makes one hey bail, granted 64 to one is a lot more compact, but wow you must have a lot of grass to need that much storage.
