Latest file for Various v1.18.x:
StopTheSqueak-1.0.4.zip 1-click install

As of 1.19 it is unnecessary to use this mod has the changes are included in the base game. Feel free to use it for updates pre 1.19 of course!

Background on the name

What originally started as just a simple fix for what I considered a minor annoyance, that being the squeak that the doors make; ballooned into a collection of over 80 sound related changes and fixes across the entire game. And so the name stayed.

If you have any reccomandations or feedback feel free to put it in the comments or reach out to me on discord Rythillian#0001, twitter or in the VS discord.

Overview of STS

The pack includes simple changes, such as fixing audio popping, microphone rumbles/bumps, removing background noise, incorrect mono/stereo mixing, attempted exorcisms, hums, echos and more! A full list of all changes can be found within the zip (more indepth than the one below).

The pack stays 100% completely true to vanilla by not replacing any audio files, only modifiying and touching up the existing files. Some sounds have been modified in ways that are different from standard vanilla (though they remain the original audio file, just adjusted). For example the bow release sfx has been modified in a way that is different from vanilla, and the strike sfx have been swapped due to the change in seraph voices.  (At the moment the replacement uses a modified sound from the game, if you wish to revert this change, just simply remove the file from the pack under assets\game\sounds\player\strike1.ogg). Future modications like this may be made, a full list and details can be found below; and I hope to eventually attach a video that goes over all the changes with comparisons as well!

Feel free to suggest any changes/additions as I do plan to keep updating it as I use the pack myself.

Psst.. you are also free to do whatever you want with the themepack (within reason lmao); modify it, reupload it, I don't care!

IMPORTANT:

It should be noted however that the pack is still limited by being a themepack and not a full on mod. So fixes that require any changes outside of swapping audio files are not possible with this pack. Due to issues with file size, it is not possible to include the volume fixes for the tuning cylinders. In the meantime I highly suggest checking out accessibilitytweaks. It allows you to adjust the volume of the tuning cylinders seperately from the ambience slider.

Full list of changes provided below

Blocks & Creatures

  • door.ogg - Removed the squeak.
  • metaldoor.ogg - Gain lowered and cutoff fixed.
  • barrel.ogg, open & close - Pop fixed, exremely weird issue with open sound fix.
  • chestopen.ogg - Pop fixed.
  • strawdummy-hit.ogg - Beggining hit gain lowered and cutoff fixed.
  • largedoor-close.ogg - Odd cutoff pop at end of audio removed, slight fade-out added.
  • Locust: death.ogg - Fixed an odd pop sound and mixing issues.
  • Pig: [attack, hurt, idle, piglet-hurt, piglet-idle].ogg - Lowered the gain, no more piglet jumpscare.
  • Bell: hurt.ogg - Pop removal
  • Hare: [hurt, hare-idle].ogg - Pop fixes, background noise removal and mic bump removed.
  • Drifter: drifter-idle1.ogg - Minor background noise reduction.
  • Drifter: idle[1-4].ogg - volume lowered to max out at around -19db, major background noise cleanup on 4.
  • Drifter: aggro[1&2].ogg - volume lowered to max out at around -14db.
  • Drifter: hurt.ogg - lowered by 3db.
  • Fox: yip.ogg - Ton of background noise removed, should no longer sound like ingame weather.
  • Bear: hurt.ogg - Pop fixed with a minor fade added.
  • grasshopper.ogg - Minor background noise cleanup. Sound is currently unused ingame.

Effects

  • cashregister.ogg - Fixed audio being cutoff suddenly and a metallic clang was removed.
  • crusher-impact3.ogg - Pitch at the end was adjusted to not be wonky.
  • deepbell.ogg - Lowered the gain down so that you can keep your hearing intact when reading that sweet sweet lore
  • translocate-active.ogg - Crackle removed from middle of sfx.

Environment

  • creek.ogg - Mic rumble/self noise removed.
  • [drip1, drip2, drip3].ogg - These are all the same audio file, why? Who knows.. removed clicking sound.
  • fireplace.ogg - Random high-pitched sound that played throughout removed.
  • largesplash1.ogg - Fixed audio cutoff.
  • underwater.ogg - Removed the sounds of the mic/camera bumping into something.
  • wind.ogg - Removed a buzzing noise that played throughout and a microphone clunk.

Player & Held

  • stab.ogg - Hiss reduced.
  • strike1.ogg - Replaced due to old seraph noises going the way of the dodo.
  • strike2.ogg - Replaced like strike1, but with a slight variation to spice things up.
  • throw.ogg - Converted to mono.
  • torch-idle.ogg - Was requested to add this and was hell to fix up. The torch loop is too short, and it has so many odd pops, clicks and humming, that extending it and trying to make the loop less noticable hurt my very soul. Should loop better now and as a bonus it's a bit cozier sounding with proper mixing.
  • torch-equip.ogg - Removed the delay at the start of the audio and removed a pop at the end of the audio.
  • wetclothsqueeze.ogg - Ton of background noise removed but I geniuenly don't know where this sound plays ingame. (Apprently it plays when making cheese, thanks Lithos!)
  • messycraft.ogg -  Clipping fixed, that's it.

Voice, Walk and Wearable

  • altoflute.ogg - Removed a high-pitched hum.
  • deepsnow3.ogg - End made to fit/work better with other snow walking sounds.
  • gravel1.ogg - Clicking sound removed from middle of sfx.
  • Chain [1 & 2] - lowered by -3db.
  • Scale [1 & 2] - Lowered by -5db.
  • Plate [1-4] - Lowered by -5db.
  • grass2.ogg - Removed rumbles from midway through the audio.
  • grass3.ogg - Removed an odd pop in the audio.

Weather

  • hail.ogg - Bunch of cleanup to the audio, removed random clicking noises that would play throughout. This one is kinda hard to describe due to just how.. much.. there is going on in the audio.
  • lightning-distant.ogg - Removal of background hiss and some cleanup to the mix.
  • lightning-near.ogg - Slight cleanup, this one was minor.
  • lightning-verynear.ogg - Removed the sounds of dog barking and people shouting. Yes really.
  • wind-leafy.ogg - Removed a few loud leaf rustles that would always play on the mid of the loop. Basically made it super obvious when the audio looped. Now it’s not!

General & Tools

  • thud.ogg - Removed a mettalic echo at the end of the audio, should have a proper "thud" now!
  • [camerasnap, menubutton, menubutton_press].ogg - Converted to mono.
  • [stone_switch, tick, toggleswitch].ogg - Converted to mono.
  • bow-draw.ogg - modified slightly to have more "thump".
  • bow-release.ogg - Is now timed correctly, modified to have an arrow whoosh and bow string wobble, still the same sfx.
  • scythe[1&2].ogg - Removed background noise and echo.

I just want to say, I've had this game since the very beginning, so years, and I'm very sensitive to hearing irregurlaries in loops and such, as I am a musician. The torch-idle sound has plagued me for a long time to say the least. lol.

I tinkered with it myself, but that loop was such a mess, I never actually finished it. I just listened to the version you created, and I have to say BRAVO. *slow clap* Thank you so much. This is so much work, and you corrected it beautifully. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :D

DandyDan I'm glad you enjoy it!

Awesome mod, great job!

💬 RythillianAuthor, Aug 5th 2023 at 2:25 PM

At the moment (as of 1.18.7) there aren't any new sounds for me to fix up, so unless users suggest new audio issues or new audio is added there shouldn't be any new updates for awhile.

I will of course update the pack if for whatever reason things break, new audio is added or there are any audio changes!

💬 Pabbley, May 10th 2023 at 4:08 AM

Thank you so much for this, the squeaking really hurts my ears everytime I have to open a door.

💬 RythillianAuthor, May 7th 2023 at 1:22 PM

Lithos Oh so that's where that played! I'll add that to the changelist.

Most of the changes in the pack probably won't be noticeable to most, but that was kinda the intention. It's mostly just a collection of stupid things that bothered me over the years (tried to have fun writing the changelist).

I kinda raised an eyebrow at this and giggled reading all the changes. Definitely going to give it a shot.

Also, wet cloth squeeze occurs during cheese-making when the player twists the cloth with a stick to squeeze out the whey.

Plan on making one for the next update of the pack! Got a bunch of changes coming after suggestions I received from folks. bumblebink

Would be nice if there was a video to showcase all of the old sounds and the replacements added by this mod. Great mod though!

💬 RythillianAuthor, Mar 30th 2023 at 12:16 PM

Good, more sounds for me to potentially tweak

💬 DanaCraluminum, Mar 30th 2023 at 11:58 AM

1.18 added much more sounds, there are 348 sounds in 1.18.0-pre.8
