My cabbages!!!

Not being able to get enough seeds to expand my farms pushed me to make a simple content mod which allows to choose between getting food or seeds.

As of v1.0.3 vegetable flowering stages do spawn at worldgen making it possible to obtain seeds from wild crops. In an existing world the new wild flowering stages will spawn only in newly generated chunks.

The mod is now balanced to be as similar as possible as vanilla:

  • wild grain/legume crops yeld enough to convert at least some to seed
  • wild vegetable crops include flowering stages so vegetable seeds are harvestable in the wild
  • when converting half of the grain/legume harvest to seed, the food/seed yeld will be identical to vanilla for the same number of crops
  • when letting half of the vegetable crops flower, the food/seed yeld will be identical to vanilla for the same number of crops as long as it's an even number

Overview

This mod changes the crops' growth stages and the amounts of seeds and food dropped on harvest, and adds a way to replant grains and legumes.

Vegetables

  • All vegetables get an additional growth stage (and a slightly longer growth time to compensate)
  • Vegetables have only a small chance to drop a seed when they're in the mature growth stage (second to last stage)
  • At the last stage vegetables will be flowering and harvesting them will yeld double the seeds that the crop would yeld in vanilla, plus an amount of rot equal to the amount of vegetables they usually drop when mature
  • When mature vegetables drop double the food amount they drop in vanilla

Legumes and grains

  • All legumes and grains don't drop seeds
  • When harvested in the mature growth stage the crops will yeld a double amount of grains/legumes to compensate
  • When harvested in the second to last growth stage the crops will yeld the usual amount of grains/legumes
  • Additionally, there's a small chance for crops to drop a smaller amount of grains/legumes when harvested in the third to last growth stage
  • It will be possible to craft a seed packet using about half of the crop's harvest

Exceptions

  • Pumpkins work differently so I left them alone
  • I didn't even want to think about how to deal with pineapples

  • more rot for your composting needs!
  • let some of your vegetables flower or you might run out of seeds
  • expand your farms easily by starving yourself!
  • bees and butterflies will feed on the vegetables only when they're flowering
  • easily change the mod to your liking simply editing the json patches

Special thanks to Trini for the awesome title image and to TwoF for the russian translation!

Compatibility
  • I didn't test it with any other farming mods so let me know
  • Probably compatible with XSkills but additional testing is required
  • Compatible with Herbarium, Wildcraft: Herbs and Spices, Wildcraft: Fruits and Nuts and Wildcraft: Trees and Shrubs (no errors while testing in a world with all those mods alongside Realistic Farming, and harvesting/cultivating the wildcraft plants seems to be working fine)
  • Looks like the mod is currently compatible with v1.20.0-pre* but I won't fully support it until a stable release comes out
Roadmap
  • possible rebalancing so that crops yeld also 2x the vanilla food amount added in v1.0.2
  • add wilted vegetables that can't be eaten but can be used to feed animals or to make rot (like dry fruit mash) and get dropped in place of rot when the flowering plant is harvested
  • add a seeding stage after the flowering stage
  • make flowering cassava as big as the mature plant
  • make flowering cabbage as big as the mature plants
  • add the "break to harvest" tooltip on the second to last growth stage for vegetables added in v1.0.2
  • translations
  • add a chance to spawn flowering vegetables at worldgen added in v1.0.3
Known bugs
  1. cassava doesn't drop seeds when flowering
  2. vegetables flowering textures are floating a bit over the ground

if you want to go for realism. root vegitables grow seeds above ground so their separate. mean you alway get both. havent done alot of farming. idk if potatoes are in th game. potatoes have seeds that looks like a smal green fruit and you have to let them ferment for like 3 mounths naturaly beforr you can use the seeds, or a proces to speed it up that i don't know. anyway breeding potatoes take forever. ah crop breeding, havent seen a mod like that yet.

Cuddly_Khan oh well I checked the wrong mod 😅 from a quick look to Wild Farming I'd say the two mods should be compatible but you'd end up with multiple ways to get seeds from crops: two different recipes from grain and the flowering growth stage plus the Wild Farming recipe for vegetables. It doesn't look like using both would cause any crashes or errors but I'll try to test them together to confirm.

Kaisentlaia

Willdfarming is a mod that lets you turn all types of crops into seeds (including flowers and cattails). This mod is also a mod that lets you turn crops into seeds and to get seeds by letting crops grow for longer, hence why I asked about compatibility. I typed it correctly in the first half of my comment, but I see I misstyped Wildfarming as Wildcraft in the second part of my comment. Sorry.

Cuddly_Khan looks like the mod is compatible with all the newest Wildcraft mods

Cuddly_Khan I will look into it. Did you try it yet with wildcraft?

Was wondering if it was possible to make it compatible with Wildfarming. I like the idea of using this mod for getting my seeds from my crops because it's more immersive, but Wildcraft has some features that I also can't do without (being able to cultivate flowers and other plants).

Finally, I’ll be able to enlarge my garden without going crazy, but with the right effort!
