Primitive Tools:
About: Primitive Tools is a mostly pointless tool mod made for getting to mining and wood building easier at the cost of efficiency. This is my first mod and I did my best to keep the vanilla balance in mind. The tools have very low durablility since the resources to craft them are easily gotten. I also halved the mining speed of the stone pickaxe to show that though rock can break rock it is a slow process. If you find any bugs or have suggestions please post them here. I will try and get to them as soon as I am able. Thanks for checking out my mod!!
Tools:
Stone Pickaxe - Can mine at a tool tier 2 level albeit slowly and not for long. (can't mine metal or mantle blocks)
Stone Hammer - Can smash any none crystalized ore chunck into nugets a few times. Also used with the splitter to make planks.
Wood Splitter - Can split logs into planks when hammered into logs. Can also wedge apart plank blocks with out the hammer.
CRAFTING RECIPES:
v1.0.0 - Initial release of Primitive Tools.
v1.0.1 - language file update
- added ReadMe file to mod package for "professionalism".
- fixed en.json to work propperly - all items added by this mod should have propper names now (Stone Pickaxe,Wood Splitter, etc. . .)
- added Ukrainian, Russian, and Japanese Google translated language translation. - Please let me know if something translated wrong!
- added the ability to store all 3 tools on the ground.
- added the ability to store all 3 tool heads on the ground.
- added German Translation, thanks to ThePionier for translating it.
- fixed typo in handbook attribute. Handbook should no longer show all variants of the tools when looking at the recipe.
- removed some ironias texture files I forgot when I was going to make the wood splitter make splintered wood planks instead.
V1.3.0 - Bone Arrow Update
- Added bone-arrows and bone-arrowheads. Should be compatible with all other arrow mods (note: damage is based on vanilla values so will be pointless if you use the Bullseye mod by Rahjital, but is still compatible.)
- Bone Arrow damage falls between copper(0 added damage) and flint(-0.5 added damage) added damage doing -0.25 damage with a 0.2 chance to break. This makes it a good step before getting metal while keeping it balanced with the default game.
- Added bone-arrowhead recipe using the splitter and a bone to make 4 bone arrowheads. (may look at adding a new tool for this later)
- Added bone arrow recipe.
- Updated language files to support the new items.
- Added grass rope recipe 15 dry grass to make 1 rope (may need balance tweaking)
V1.4.0 - On Fire
- Changed english translations to exclude the knapping discrption
- Removed my custom rope texture and replaced with official rope texture on all tools.
- Added item resource Twig (crafted from a stick)
- Twigs burns for 1 seconds at 700 degrees. (Stick burns 8 seconds at 700 degrees.)
- Added item Twig Bundle (Crafted from |3 grass| 6 twigs| 3 grass|)
-Twig Bundle burns for 18s (firewood burns for 24s) at 700 degrees (same as firewood and sticks)
Language Translation: I would love to support all languages but feel wierd google translating any more of them as an english only speaker.
If you want to translate or want me to google translate this mod into any Vintage Story supported language let me know below
German - ThePionier
Portuguese - Yanazake

the plank crafting seems to be broken.
i know for a fact it worked for the 1.19.7 update going to test the new update edit still works yay
@cleveravi I haven't played vintage sotry in a good while and haven't been keeping up on the updates. So Right now I'm not sure if the mod works for the current version of the game. If I get the time in the next week or so I'll see about a test and updating if need be. Might even do a complete recreation since I lost my orignal files and don't really remember how to mod for the game anymore. . .
"maxstacksize" for the stone hammer, stone pickaxe, and stone splitter has t after the second s which makes it look like "maxstackstize" the number is equal to 4 which those heads currently don't stack. I thought removing the t would make the stack size be 4 because of the "error" but now they all stack to 64. There must be something else I'm missing.
Edit: I see why, another mod that changes stack sizes auto assigns other mods stacks to 64.
Still works in 1.19.1. Awesome mod.
Baronjutter With a little patience and work you can make a nice thatch roof. Yes, it's easier with a scythe, but it can be done with a knife.
Thanks for this mod. I always found the stone-age portion of the game a real grind with no opportunity to build a cute looking house or do much other than b-line to copper tools. With this mod you can at least mine a little stone and make stairs/roofs even in the stone age.
I just noticed, the brazilian portuguese lang file has a wrong name in the latest version. It should be named "pt-br.json"!
@gndrneutralnoun Thats a good idea, thanks. I will start doing that with this mod going fowards and any other mods I make. This is the first game I have ever modded for and so learning good habits moving foward is a must :)
Suggestion: Name the .zip files of the mods with the version number, i.e. PrimitiveTools-1.4.1.zip. This makes it a lot easier for mod users to tell at a glance what version of a mod they have; the in-game mod manager is very hard to search through especially if you have a lot of mods. Also it means that when pasting a new version into the mod folder, you're just pasting and not overwriting; overwriting can lead to data errors IIRC.
So I just deleted the 4.0 release to fix. However after doing so I realized why it was like that. It had VS 1.8.1 as a compatable version and so the update just was the base versions. Oh well.
Zinth Thanks for such a quick fix to the item name error! I, too, see it as 1.4.1 then 1.4.0 as latest still, but maybe you can reupload it to change order or remove old one. :)
Bug fix update is out, I'm hoping its a visual bug on my end but todays update apears under the last update to me. Not sure whats going on there.
Yanazake Thank you for the translation. I hope I credited the language correctly I'm ignorent American who hasn't had the chance to travel.
V1.4.1 - Bug Fixes
- Fixed twig bundle item name.
- Reverted Vintage Story required version back to 1.16.0 for backwards compatability.
- Added Lang suport for Portuguese (Credit: Yanazake)
- Updated all previuosly supported language files with google translated descriptions for the twig and twig bundle.
I noticed the twig bundle name issue too. But I guess the lang file is fine, and the problem lies somewhere else then. Well...
https://pastebin.com/0Dc9rm7p
Here's the pt-br file for current primitive tools. Hope it works when you update.
Lohn Thanks for reporting that item name error. I have fixed it and it will be in the next update.
This bug shows me the importance of naming conventions. It had been about a year since I last worked on this mod and I forgot I can't Camel Case vintage story item names that have spaces lol.
Also I messed up the game version requirment when I updated to 1.3.2. I changed the version dependency to 1.8.0 when I didn't mean to. This then makes it not work on earlier version of Vintage Story. In the next update I have reverted the required VS Version back to 1.6.0 so everyone can use the mod even if you don't want to update to the latest build. It will remeain at 1.6.0+ until an official update requires me to change it by breaking the mod.
The new Twig Bundle shows as primitivetools:item-twigbundle in English, currently. The new tool rope textures and knapping names are great, though! Thanks for your hard work :)
There are 2 errors that I couldn't figure out in todays update but shouldn't effect the mod at all. Something happened with update 1.8.1 that effected it. If anyone knows how to fix the /move-temp is invalid for "game:itemtypes/tool/arrow.json" let me know and I will patch asap.
I have a pt-br partial translation for this mod, I'll try to update it tomorrow and post the link to the file.
SuspicousPickaxe I was not offended in the slightest, construct critisim is a good thing and helps.
Now to think of what to add at the cost of efficency. . . My first thought is a step between sticks and logs to fuel fire.
Watched The Secret of Roan Inish recently and saw a dry twig bundle that was wrapped tightly and kept coals going for the night.
Zinth That sounds awesome, im looking forwards to it, im sorry if i offended you in anyway btw :)
To be honest it's been almost a year since I last looked at vintage story let alone mod it. I'm working on relearning how to mod it and revamping this mod. Looking to add more useless tools to help with early game. Expect the next version of the mod to actualy add something and I will look into the suggestions by you guys as I work on the revamp.
Can you please remove the "Made by knapping" text on the name, i think it looks really bad, and also pls change the rope texture to actual rope, cool mod
GIGAAj1 Sorry for such a long wait for this patch.
Back to playing/modding vintage story. Sorry for the long delay life got complicated for a while.
V1.3.2 - Localization Fix
- fixed bug causing it to crash when using several of the localiztions
- updated to main game version 1.18.0
TheNiteFox
But it still works amazingly, tho
Can someone please update this mod for 1.17? :c
In the version 1.3.1 are in the lang files to many "{" it curses the game to crash to be spezific in the "ru.json" , "ja.json" and "de.json"
Update 1.3.1 is now here: Fixed groundstorage pick up bug, fixed modinfo formatting, hopefully made the mod compatable with Weaponpack Gamma by Mr1k3. Big thanks to Rahjital for patching my mod into his as well as showing me how to patch for Weaponpack Gamma by patching for it for Bullseye.
@ThePionier. I am feeling better and had a few more minutes of free time than I thought so I've been trying to duplicate any bugs related to dedicated servers. However, I haven't had any problems. Before I push this update to fix pixking up toolheads I would like to figure it out. My theory is a conflict with another mod. The warnings you posted are just from my modinfo formated for looks not the way the game expects. If you can send either the server-main.txt or client-main.txt. If you don't feel comfortable doing it via this way you can contact me on this discord server https://discord.gg/SFhcRmTy (My old streaming discord server).
Hello! Zinth
I hope you are feeling better! And that you get healthy quickly, and above all fit!
I just went back to the previous version, then I was able to start the server again. So no problem, maybe the error message will help you. If you need more, I can see what logs I can give you so you can find the error faster.
Thank you @ate0ate, I'll see if there is a way to make picking up tool heads more clear. @ThePionier odd that its causing problems with your server I'll look into asap. Sorry for delay in response yesterday I was layed out with a high fever, and today is full of doctor appointments so it may not be until tomorrow 5/13/2022 that I can even look into these issues but I'll try and fit some trouble shooting in tonight.
Good Morning! Zinth
It seems that your mod has problems after the update, my MP server doesn't start anymore as soon as I put the new version on it.
I have this as an error message:
5/11/2022 6:13:23 AM [Warning] [primitivetools] Failed parsing version string 'Version: Mod: 1.3.0 | Game: 1.16.0+' at index 0: Expected MAJOR version number, found 'V' (best guess: 0.0.0-VersionMod1.3.0Game1.16.0)
2022-05-11 06:13:23 [Warning] [primitivetools] Dependency 'game': Failed parsing version string '1.16' at index 4: Expected PATCH version, found end of string (best guess: 1.16.0)
Maybe that will help you with troubleshooting?
I'll start translating tonight too!
How about just breaking the bones into 4 pieces with the Wood Splitter? And then carves the pieces into arrowheads with a knife?
I don't think it was done much differently.
I've had the problem with picking up tools from the ground the whole time, you can place them but you can't pick them up. At least the tools from your mod
First time trying this out, very nice work! I am having a small issue where I placed a stone log splitter head on the ground but am unable to pick it up or interact with it in any way. I cannot seem to hit it to break it either. It could be a mod conflict that I am unaware of but thought it worth mentioning. Crouch and clicking, as is how you place them, does not seem to work for picking them up either.
Update 1.3.0 is now live - Bone arrows and grass rope recipe. See above recipe spoilers and change log for more info.
Good Morning! Zinth
I'm surprised that they don't do it with the rope with the standard stone tools. Because visually you can already see the rope by the tool, and as far as I know you can already make bone tools, or it's from another mod I use. Only I haven't seen any bone arrowheads yet. As far as I know, there was one next to Feuerstein.
But I'm curious what may come in your mod! :)
ThePionier, I'm not sure if I will change all stone age tools to use rope as I'm really trying to avoid changing the vanilla game and just adding to it (once I learn how to set up cofig files I may do this with config to turn on and off). I can make a rope recipe that uses the most common material in most biomes ;). Also bone tools and weapons sound interesting to implement. I'm working on another project atm but when I'm done with it I will see what I can do. Guarantee new rope recipe in next update for sure.
To pick up tools and heads off the ground crouch (default shift) right click them again to pick up. (Basicly same way you place you pickup)
Good Morning! Zinth
Thanks for the update and the credits for translating! :)
I might have a small request/suggestion. Would it be possible for you to change the standard stone tool recipes to use rope as well? That would align things a bit since your tools need rope and the others don't.
And maybe another way of getting rope if you don't necessarily have cattails or vines around. Certainly there are some methods that were used in the past to make ropes etc.
Bone arrowheads! Maybe? ;)
One question :D
How do I pick up the tools/heads off the ground again? They're kind of unusable and sit there, and if I destroy the block below, they just fall onto the next block below?
Updated to v1.2.0 ground storage for tools and tool heads have been added. See full change log for more information.
If anyone thinks of a primitive tool that isn't added by another mod and wants me to look at adding it, I am always up for suggestions. Or a new feature of what is there such as the ground storage that was requested.
And as always please report any bugs here and I will get on them asap. I'm still new to modding and haven't codded in years so my rust will show.
Zinth
Thank you very much!
That wouldn't be necessary, of course, but I'm happy about it! :)
If new things are added, I will of course translate them ;)
@ThePionier, thanks for the translation it will be part of the next update I'm working on. Credit will be in ReadMe file, and I'll add a section to the post for credits as well.
Hello Zinth,
here is a German translation https://www.mediafire.com/file/8i729ezme7bk8qg/de.json/file
Updated to v1.0.1 - Realized I didn't do the language files correctly and now they are fixed. Tools should have their proper names now. Also translated the tool names into Ukrainian, Russian, and Japanese using google translate. I felt weird doing so, so if something is mistranslated please let me know with what tool in english and the propper translation and I will update the language files for the next release.
