Latest file for v1.17.6:
TemporalLamp.zip
1-click install
It's a simple mod. Adds a powerful lamp made out of temporal gears.
The three gears are locked in a paradox, releasing lots (22) of blue light.

Q = Clear Quartz x1
T = Temporal Gear x1
Makes: Temporal Lamp x1
As you can see I had a lot of fun playing with the particools.
Warning: Use of lamp will make you very sexy to moths.
If installed alongside lantern this will cast out light 100 blocks away.

That wasn't a joke, it's an objective fact.
Couldn't tell.
"Warning: Use of lamp will make you very sexy to moths." didn't give me the idea, you were making a statement. Lol
LadyBlakeHammer It's a statement on the annoying trend of modders who make blatantly overpowered features, call it "Temporal" and then slap a temporal gear cost on it.
The idea originally came from a Discord suggestion.
l33tmaan I am not inside his head but I could wager, this was just one of his more whimsical mods.
Just to let you know, I was able to pop out one of these bad boys before I ever made a regular lantern. I don't know if that's a balancing issue or just a quirk of how I play, but these seem pretty easy to create.

It is the longest possible range.
Well it can go higher, but entity light stops rendering that far out.
That 100 block range truly is gargantuan. I feel like the eye of Sauron.
Temporal lamp now has lantern support; sporting a gargantuan 100 block range.
i see i see! thank you! ill certanly check it out and see what i can make. ill let you know if i make anything cool.

You can find all the files in the Vintagestory Assets folder.
Most things can be found in Survival, some are hidden in Creative.
Some of the assets are harder to find than others, but most you can get by just using the file explorer's search function.
Torch is found in survival/blocktypes/wood/torch.json
You can modify JSONS in mods too. Extract the zip file, modify the stuff inside, then put it back in.
right, but how do i find something like the location of the torch for example (so it can refernece by my mod when i make modifications to it)? is there a place to view the file structure of all the base game assets? i know theres a git hub that has some of the assets, but there are alot missing. for example, coke coal i couldent find when i went looking for it
@CanaDan
It's not too hard you just take the JSON and modify it. There's also patching which is still pretty easy but a little more complicated than simple JSON edits.
You don't need any special tools unless you're going to be doing code mods. The learning curve for code mods is way higher but you get absolute freedom on what you want to do.
i did want to make a mod in the past. how did you make this? did you manually make the json? or was there some tool that allows you to make mods more easily? i have a whole bunch of ideas but im lacking a whole bunch of information on how to go about this. iv already looked through the wiki, but it was seemingly lacking a whole bunch of information on some of the basics (like item, block, or entity file location refernces).

It's just a JSON mod you can modify the values yourself.
You've my permission to copy the code for your own mod.
if possible, it would be nice to have a low tier option (something with just 1 temporal gear) that gives off lower light levels. Maybe a temporal gear + an tourch for 14-16 light level.
it would also be nice if the contrast was a bit lower (maybe around 4-5 instead of 7). its very blue atm and the diffrences between a standard lantern and your lantern are quite striking instead of feeling vanilla.
Buffed light level to 22 so it's better than normal lamps.
