Jsaac4000 This mod i something I made before understanding the modding landscape of the game. Do not use this mod. Instead, you should utilize WildFarmingRevival. You should be able to find it on this website quickly. it does this mod and every other plant way better than I do.

Reeds only grow from roots.
only one root drops when breaking roots in vanilla game.
This mod makes roots drop when breaking the tops of the reeds.

Wild farming revival is better. it has a slightly different implementation where roots are made from the tips.

what does this mean in practical terms ? does this drop more or less roots than vanilla ?
