africanmonitorlizards_107.zip 1-click install

Adds five species of monitor lizards that spawn in different environments to your world. This mod includes the Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus), the West African monitor (V. stellatus), the African rock monitor (V. albigularis), the savanna monitor (V. exanthematicus), and the desert monitor (V. griseus).

Monitor lizards will generally spawn as adults, but juveniles will sometimes appear instead. Juvenile monitor lizards can be caught and transported using a bug net, although this process will not work once they grow to adult size. All monitors drop their skins, which can be used as decoration or as a taxidermy component. Adult monitors are also a source of bushmeat.

As adults, monitor lizards will chase and attack certain prey items. Although they will not actively hunt players, they may attack if the player gets too close - a behavior that is still demonstrated by monitors that have been raised in captivity.

This is the first mod in a series of mods based on the genus Varanus.

Note: This mod requires version 1.0.1 or later of the mod Bug Net Compatibility (https://mods.vintagestory.at/bugnetcompatibility) to function properly. Issues may occur if that mod is not also installed.

Special thanks to Tenth Architect for the Fauna of the Stone Age taxidermy system, which this mod also uses (although it does not require any FotSA mods and works with or without them).

Thanks! I added it because of Tenth Architect's mods having the same feature, and I will look into making it compatible with some of my other mods in the future.

It was such a nice surprise to find out there is taxidermy in order to have like display figures! I honestly hope you add this feature to all your mods in the future! It is such a genius & cute idea!

Thank you so much for your support! I am definitely considering all of these things for the future, but first I am working on more monitor lizard mods.

What about a spiders pack :)? Kinda just to collect best to not have them attack people since many people hate spiders :(.

I just love your level of detail to each creature in each one of your mods.

Poison Dart Frogs would also be a really neat one :).

I also love to see more creatures we can hunt or fish.

Can't wait to see what else you add, keep up the top-tier work my friend!

I have updated the mod so that the monitors work this way, since that is what I originally intended. Thank you for your feedback and help!

Yep, 1.0.4 that's the one. So in varanus-adult.json, i just added "player" at this line:

aitasks: [
{
   code: "meleeattack",
   "entityCodesByType": {

   "@.*-(niloticus|stellatus|albigularis)": [ "player","chicken-*","hare-*", "rana-*", "procyonidae-*" ],
   ...

(well, this made those three types of lizards attack, I felt the others could remain friendly)

But I know VERY little how the code behind all those values and attributes work. I see there are priorities, and dont-do-stuff-if-saturated etc. Maybe they just didn't attack because some of these parameters, maybe they didn't prioritize me or something :)
Though I tried to agitate them for quite a while, in a very crude attempt to rule stuff like that out.

And I should add that after being attacked by me, they become aggressive. So that works aye ok!

Which version of the mod were you using? 1.0.4 made some adjustments to the AI, so I want to know if that is the one you were using or not.

I'm not an expert on the entity AI. But I compared your file with the vanilla bear. I added "player" to the first meleeattack-aitask (not the one with whenInEmotionState: "aggressiveondamage").
Then they started biting me.

What was causing them to not bite? They did when I tested, but if you want me to change something, let me know. Thank you for your support!

💬 Frepo, Oct 14th 2023 at 1:26 PM

Ok, I've "fixed" so that they actually bite you when agitated. So don't mind me :)  Though it was kinda cool when they tried to scare you off, but didn't actually attack. Still, we're running a hardcore server, stuff must be dangerous, grindy or generally a pain in the a** to be allowed as content :)
Thank you for this. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL!!

💬 Frepo, Oct 14th 2023 at 12:41 PM

Love your animals! They bring life to VS.
I was hoping these lizards would be somewhat of a danger. But they are completely cool with me standing next to them or jumping on them. Were they not supposed to be somewhat aggressive?
I've tried everything to provoke them :)  but they show no aggressive behavior at all, unless attacked.
I don't have the Bug Net Comp mod installed, is it because of this? Or can I change some value in the entity-json to make them more... protective of their personal space? :)

[EDIT]
Ok, they actually recognize that I'm too close for their comfort, they start chasing me. But they don't bite. They just run up to me and looks at me for a second.
