Limestone Speleothems Mod v1.1.0

This mod applies a patch which changes all newly generated stalagmites and stalactites (speleothems) to be made of limestone/calcite, this makes caves host an unconventional source of lime for producing limewater in order to produce leather and other products. The mod also adds worldgen entries that make more groups of speleothems in cave systems.
Speleothems made of granite or peridotite don't make much sense as speleothems like stalagmites and stalactites are typically formed from carbonates of metals like calcium dissolved in water entering caves and grottoes via porous rock bodies, condensation or underground water bodies, the carbonates are slowly deposited via processes like evaporation producing structures like stalagmites and stalactites you see in real life caves.

Barhandar That is true, though while the other worldgen functions are designed to be extendable it's been difficult to try and dissect them and find where and how I'd extend them when the code comments are much more sparse than I'd like. Ideally I'd love to be able to apply erosion patterns where the ocean meets a tall cliff but identifying where those features exist without checking every block multiple times might be a bit difficult.

Real-life reference: speleothems are typically formed from carbonates because caves themselves are typically formed from carbonates. To form karst, the most stereotypical and the most common "cave" shape, soluble minerals (calcium carbonate and, in a few cases, sulfate, salt, ice) are required. There are other ways to erode rock and cause hollows, but they're rarer and result in much smaller caves.

Of course, this doesn't make for good gameplay, even without compounding factors like simplified stone strata (i.e. no mountains made out of limestone) or only having two carbonate rock types ingame, so karst caves generate in all rock at all depths, with non-karst shapes like faults, lava tubes, etc integrated into them. Also, some shapes (such as wind or wave-carved dead-ends at cliff- and seasides) are not present at all.

Awesome, thanks!

Phaedrus I can confirm that this mod works on 1.17

💬 Phaedrus, Nov 16th 2022 at 8:10 PM

Has anyone tried this on v1.17?

You have to place the limestone rocks beneath the hammer in the crafting grid to produce lime according to the recipe files.

Thanks for the mod. But how can I get lime from the stalagnites? Grinding in the mill doesn't work, neither does crushing with a hammer.

Very cool idea, love this sort of mod.
