Description
In reality, composting not only involves food waste, but must be balanced with "brown" items rich in carbon as well to encourage rapid composting. This simple mod intends to reflect this.
Instead of adding rot directly to a barrel to compost, you now need to craft an item called "Organic Wastepile" with rot and some kind of grass. Currently you can use 2 dry grass or 1 thatch with a rot to make 2 wastepiles. You can also use a hay block with 2 rot to make 4 wastepiles, or if you happen upon aged hay, combine with 4 rot to make 8 wastepiles.
A full stack of this (64) can be added into a barrel to produce 16 compost after 20 days. I also added 2 recipe, one requiring only half as much in the same time (32 wastepile -> 20 days -> 8 compost) and another requiring only a quarter as much (16 wastepile -> 20 days -> 4 compost)
Compatability
Should be compatible with most mods unless they change the compost recipe.
Safe to say, I wouldn't recommend using mods that allow you to compost straight grass such as "Compost Grass" or "Compost from grass", or thatch such as "Thatch Expanded" (I made my own version of this without that and other tweaks).
Notes
Currently, it takes much less rot to start composting. This is one of the intentions of the mod as I wanted to disencourage letting good food go to waste intentionally, since its takes much too long to accumulate that much naturally during normal play. However, I'm mindful to make sure it's not too easy to acquire compost compared to vanilla. Now it requires some active time and tool durability to harvest the grass needed. Thatch is also useful here, as it takes less of it and tool durability to make compost compared to grass.
Potential Future Changes
- Add more Organic Waste Pile recipes.
- Make Organic Waste Pile "pileable" similar to charcoal.
- Or make a block of organic waste pile that can "cure" into compost. Would of course take longer to happen. (6+ in-game months)
- To prevent feature-creep, I'll likely introduce a seperate version with more features. If I choose to host it on this page, I'll might introduce this as a version 2.0.0 with the option to download the simpler 1.X.X version.

I was using Thatch Expanded, but this is is a lot more realistic and immersive, I compost in real life with grass clippings and food waste
If you want to expand this mod please add a composting bin that has a larger capacity, and has support to primitive survival worms
I am really enjoying this mod. Being able to compost in smaller quantities and with less rot is a nice QoL improvement.
Thank you! I'm excited to play with this mod.
Echoweaver
You know I had this really stubborn mental blind spot that you removed that I was literally diluting the rot with grass, but didn't realize till now that I did not increase the quanitity of the output. Let me fix that, and serious thanks for bringing this up.
EDIT: Uploaded a new file to correct this now, will update description later. Now it properly takes 32 rot for 64 wastepile, so twice as much compost per rot than compared to vanilla.
I love the idea of this mod, but I'm struggling with the math. If there is one rot per wastepile and 64 wastepiles for 8 compost, this mod produces half the compost per rot than the base game. Considering how much effort it is to produce compost, that seems like a huge hit to output for the sake of immersion.
Almost makes me wish for some kind of food scraps mechanic for added realism. Looks like a good mod, will download later :)
