Shazza Interesting, thanx! I was going on A: wikipedia and B there might have been some confusion between German, English and the old Egyptian names. In any event, I've redone the whole vellum/parchment in Bookbinders, so I might need to revisit this. What this mod here does is not really my business :)
Tels You're conflating 'new' vellum with 'old' parchment. Vellum is a actually much finer material almost exclusively made from the skin of calves, while parchment has notably been defined as a "cruder, thicker, less refined form". You'll see multiple mentions of 'vellum' (context to older parchment) actually making use of goat and sheepskins, and not from their calves. Parchment and vellum are distinct in historical texts, vellum basically turned into the more commonly-used, colloquial term for higher-grade (younger) skins over time, particularly when it became a French luxury (with the.. questionable levels of quality by using the skins of unborn calves).
If you really wanna get pedantic, parchment created from treating and scraping adult/larger hides would still be useful outside of books (applicable to crates and loose notes). And rough ('old') parchment was still used in many early texts anyway, it's not like they couldn't write on it.
All that to say, glad to see this is actually still working in 1.20-rc! Trying to make a rabbit farm is nightmarish just to get some prettier crates.
Parchment in real life is made from calf (e.g. young animal) skins, you can't just use an old goat skin as it is not soft and thing enough. VS praises itself to be more realistic and thus it seems logical that parchment can only be made from small hide, as this is likely to come from a young animal. That's my reasoning and why Bookbinders also has parchment only made from small hide.
I expect these recipes or something similar may be added later in the development cycle, but this mod will exist if/until that happens
Ruyeex Base game has at least two recipes for parchment
Idk why it's not even a thing on the base game
