Synopsis
Have you ever walked on a frozen lake and heard this ominuous sound of the ice cracking under your feet and thought:
"Can it actually break under me in this game?"
Well now it can! Be careful where you run around, or you might take a surprise ice bath. Speaking of which... other than becoming wet (which slightly speeds up your body temperature falling) our characters don't really mind swimming through water at -20°C. This is now a thing of the past!
Do so much as touch freezing cold water for a second and you will start to take freezing damage. A few seconds more and your body temperature will be down for good.
So be careful in unkown territory in the winter, you never know whether that layer of snow hides a dangerously thin-iced lake underneath!
Details
I really thought this would be part of the base game for a while, because of that ill-omened sound of walking on ice. I hope to bring a bit more realism, depth and sense of danger into the wilderness, without breaking the balance or becoming too annoying with it.
Lake Ice (Glaciers are unaffected) now has a chance to break when you walk or stand on it. It now also makes a sound when it breaks.
The break chance is drastically increased by running and jumping and strongly influenced by the temperature (at -20°C the ice becomes quite strong but beware at temperatures around zero).
SnowLayer now forward collisions with them to the block below them, so that a lake does not become safe just because theres snow on it. Please inform me of any unwanted side effects this may have on your game or other mods.
Touching water outside of closed rooms at freezing temperatures will apply freezing damage, similarily to the damage taken when below 34°C body temperature for too long. The damage can become quite noticeable when temperatures go really low, but should only be able to kill you if you somehow end up in a flooded cave system at night. The greater danger comes from the very fast drainage of body temperature that comes with each damage tick.
Compatibility / To-Do
This is my first mod for VS and I only tested it locally so far, so please inform me of any bugs you might encounter.
Next on the To-Do list would be a config file to adjust the chances, timings and damage values.
The mod changes LakeIce and SnowLayer quite deeply and might encounter incompatibilities with other mods there. Otherwise its a rather small code-only mod that should not make too much trouble.

Seems to be a compatibility issue with Primitive Survivial. Touching the frozen furrowed farmland deletes the block. Also jsut dropping items on the ice causes them to break and again, delete furrowed farmland.
Is there any chance of an update for 1.19? It works, but we're getting crashes on my server whenever a player stands on a submerged chiseled block in the new vanilla ruins. Here's a copy of one of the crash reports: pastebin.com/UBZfjYRp
It would also be great to finally have that config for ice break chance - as is, it really breaks far too frequently (even when walking slowly or sneaking), to the point where it's never worth trying to step on a single lake ice block.
Thanks so much! This mod adds something that really ought to be in the base game and all your work is greatly appreciated.
Would be fantastic but this breaks being able to cool hot metal in water, ends up bugged 50% of the time and stuck at over 1000 degrees. Also in agreement with mj_outlaw, the ice is virtually constantly breaking while walking and when the temperature had been -14 degrees for two months, makes this just a bit too frustrating to use
Following this, because I've always thought water should be a death sentence in winter.
Have you ever heard of Wim Hof?
@mj_outlaw I will add a config for that soonish. Are you running and jumping on the ice? In cold winters and only walk speed the chance should already be way lower than 30%.
NEAT! Can I modify somehow the chance of ice breaking up? now it seems little too much for me.. id like to reduce it to like 30-35% chance of breaking up?
HONKCLUWNE Being wet makes your body temperature drop a little faster already in vanilla, so I didn't change anything there. The cold shock instant-damage is applied for 2°C or lower temperatures (not depending on the actual time of the year).
This sounds great! Definitely gonna try it out on our next run.
Does this affect how much water lowers your body temperature in seasons other than winter? IRL you can easily get hypothermia on a decently warm day if your soaked to the bone.
