Colorful Candles

Have you ever looked at the candles and thought them bland? Well, with this mod, add a splash of color to your world! This mod adds the ability to dye candles into many colors.

Dyed Candle Creation -

After the creation of a vanilla candle, you can submerge the candle in a barrel with the dye of your choice. Each candle requires 2L of dye, and takes 6 hours to completely dye. (This means you can do a max of 25 candles with 50L of dye).

  • Mint Dye is created by mixing Green Dye and Powdered Borax.
  • Sky Blue Dye is created by mixing Blue Dye (or Woad Blue Dye) and Powdered Borax.
  • Teal Dye is created by mixing Blue Dye (or Woad Blue Dye) and dry grass (or lily of the valley).
  • Brown Dye is created by mixing Red Dye and dry grass (or lily of the valley).
  • Lavender Dye is created by mixing Purple Dye and Powdered Borax.
  • Lime Dye is created by mixing Green Dye and Onion.

You can always check the handbook for recipes too!

Colored Flames/Lighting Creation -

Regular candles and dyed candles can have their flame color changed depending on the 'element' added to them. In addition to the change in 'flame color' the candle will illuminate a room in that color as well. Every recipe has you add 1 of the item listed below above and below candle of your choice in crafting grid. You can have any dyed candle with any flame type (for instance Purple Candle but Red Flame).

  • Red Flame = Clear Quartz
  • Orange Flame = Rusty gear
  • Yellow Flame = Salt
  • Green Flame =  Copper Bit (or Native Copper Nugget)
  • Blue Flame = Bismuth Bit
  • Purple Flame = Potash

My choice in items for the crafting is inspired to follow after the Element needed within the real life 'Flame Test'.

In the future, Flamed Candles will NOT allow you to add a 'scent' to them. Your choice is to either have colored lighting or the area effect.

Current Colors -

Currently there are 16 colors offered. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, Black, White, Gray, Mint, Lavender, Sky Blue, Brown, Teal, and Lime. There is also Woad Blue, but it looks exactly the same to the normal blue.

Changelog -

v.1.0.1 - Added Mint, Sky Blue, Teal, Brown, and Lavender dye and colored candles. Mod should also function in 1.20.x

v.1.1.0 - Added Lime dye and colored candle. Dyed candles can now be added to chandeliers. Fixed Handbook entry.

v.1.2.0- Added 'Flamed Candles' which illuminate with the flame color added.

Future Plans -

  • Add more colors! (For now, I think I have enough colors added, but feel free to inform me if I'm "wrong" :) )
  • Add the ability to add colored candles to chandeliers and lanterns.
  • Scented Candles with 'Area Effects' around them.

Known Bugs -

  • Chandeliers will convert candles into the first color put in them.

Feel free to leave any suggestions! - Storm

  1. I'm on 1.19.8.  Just tried with no mod, pure vanilla.  Base game recipes are expressed per 4L on my side; for instance 4L water + 1 crushed cinnabar = 4L red dye, 4L water + 4 cranberries = 4L pink dye (they didn't divide by 4 for consistency between recipes).  Only exceptions are for grey/black as far as I can see since a rusty gear dyes 8L (wouldn't have made much sense to call it 0,5 rusty gear for 4L of water).
  2. Cool ty!
  3. Got it, my bad.  Makes sense now.
  4. Interesting!  I don't even know if my suggestion is feasible to be honest, without having to change the inner VS code, but it would certainly be a nice to have!
  5. I'm adding a fifth if I may.  I just 'pruned' my world in preparation for 1.20.0 when it comes out ('/db prune' command).  Had to repeat the command several times and got a few error messages with your mod on - host connection lost - plus had to /db vacuum the database at the end.  I identified the error specifically to your mod after testing.  Mods that add items to the game and can also be left before pruning, without error and no need to vacuum, are for instance rpvoicechat or treetapper.  A mod that add items to the game and needs to be removed before pruning to prevent a CTD during pruning is for instance Mannequin.  I don't know how they work, but I hope by looking at how they were made it can be figured out (or by contacting their author maybe).

Glad to hear you're enjoying the mod!

1) On my end, the dye recipes in the hanbook are per 1L similar to mine. Not sure if that's something else changing that on your end?

2) That was a complete oversight on my end! It'll be changed in the next update, thank you!

3) If I'm not mistaken, orange dye isn't in the water help page due it not actually calling for water, just like my dyes. My dyes deal with using base game dyes instead of water, so they shouldn't appear in the water page. (just like base game orange needing yellow dye rather than water and not appearing).

4) I plan to do this at some point, but it's proving to be quite difficult with how Candle bunches are. As for Chandeliers- I've just found out a bug due to your question! Currently, it appears when you go to put in a second color it automatically converts them to whatever the first color was.  Essentially- if you put in a red candle and then a blue- it'll appear red and you lose the ability to get that blue candle back. Oops.

Hi, loving the mod so far. A few thoughts to consider, thank you for your time:

  1. The handbook dye recipes are given per 4L, could your mod do the same for easiness of conversion?
  2. Borax requirement for lavender and mint dyes seem a bit excessive imo (currently it's 4 borax for 4L of lavender or lime);  For comparison in base game it's 2 borax for 4L of white dye, 1 crushed cinnabar for 4L of red dye, 1 crushed lapis lazuli for 4L of blue dye.
  3. In the handbook, water help page.  It doesn't link to any of your new dyes.
  4. Allow to mix different color candles laid on the top surface of a single block (haven't checked if you can mix and match them in the same chandelier too).

Thanks!

SteAStro88

Just put up a new version specifically for 1.19.8.

Hoseph

Thank you so much! Your suggestion is something I was considering to do as well, so consider it planned!

💬 SalazarWindriver, Dec 24th 2024 at 1:53 PM

@SteAStro88 I haven't tested this but The More Candles Mod does.  It is more complex and requires A Culinary Artillery and Expanded food but has beeswax, lard, and soywax candles.  Each takes colors differently.  It is a lot of extra work to make the waxes.

💬 SteAStro88, Dec 24th 2024 at 10:14 AM

Hey, Is it compatible with 1.19.8?

💬 Hoseph, Dec 24th 2024 at 6:32 AM

I've never commented before and I wanted to say this is a delightful mod so far. We're in dire need of more dyeable items and I already love candles.

For suggestions on what kind of effect colored candles would have: how about text describing the smell of the candles? Each color corresponding to a particular scent.
