What Exactly Is This?
Are you tired of filling up crates upon crates with dirt after a terraforming project? Are you annoyed at having absolutely nothing useful to do with that dirt? I know I was. I was also really tired of having to run all around trying to find clay, especially with larger clay-intensive projects like filling cellars with vessels or building with bricks. So, I made this mod - it simply adds a recipe that allows you to transform all that useless dirt into useful blue RED clay!
How Does It Work?
Simply! All you need is a barrel, some dirt, and some water. Mix equal parts water and dirt, seal it for a day, and you'll be left with a barrelful of fresh clay!
NEW! You can place a full stack of 64 dirt into a barrel with only 50 litres of water, to create a full stack of 64 red clay!
That Doesn't Soun-
Realistic? Well, a few steps are skipped, but you can absolutely extract clay from soil. In real life, you'd thoroughly mix equal parts dirt and water, wait for all the heavy silt and sand and rocks to settle to the bottom, then pour the clay slurry into another container, then wait about a day for that to settle, and you'd be left with a big glob of super-wet clay that you'd then need to squeeze into something workable.
That all sounded like too much work for a nascent modder, so I simplified - mix water and dirt, get clay. Simple and clean.
If you want a more realistic and involved experience, grintera made a mod with that improved depth, available here. That mod is not mine, and vice versa, so please send any bug reports to the proper author.
Are There Incompatibilities?
I sure hope not! There might be an issue if any other mod adds a recipe involving barren, low, or medium soil mixing with water in a barrel, but I don't know of any like that.
What About Fire Clay?
Fire clay is craftable in vanilla using blue clay and flint. This mod also adds recipes to create fire clay using red clay (not blue) and flint, crushed quartz, or bonemeal.
Future Plans
Nope!
Other Notes
This is my first mod! I hope you enjoy it. Please give me any feedback you have!

irl clay is considered to be a higher fertillity soil. well in my state where we have whats called orange county clay (red clay) spread out from VA to SC very high fert soil... so low nor medium in my humble opinion should not be used for making the clay unless you add say more nutreints to it. but i understand this is also to make it simple
I don't like the lattest patch that turns the recipe to be red clay, though i understand the motivation behind it... how about the clay type being linked to low vs medium fertility dirt?
Moon_Dew CandyCaprine barrel recipes only have one output, but I quite liked the idea, so I made into a mod myself!
https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/17461
I may change the recipes in the future, maybe make the clay slip decant into wet clay item and make the bundle craftable... maybe make it able to blue and red clay, tell me how y'all prefer

I can confirm that this mod works perfectly fine in 1.20 so far. The booklet doesnt show the sprite for dirt in the recipe, but it refrences perfectly fine. thanks dev! <3
tip: Fire clay is just blue clay with added iron oxide and sometimes flint
you could probably just make the recipe eat iron ore
Really cool mod! Thanks for the detailed mod description, and the more "immersive" version of the mod you suggested sounds like a really cool idea. Good luck with it :)
@Moon_Dew It's definitely a possibility. As it stands I'm not super comfortable adding entirely new systems, but given some time and desire I think I could make the extra steps.
My knee-jerk thoughts for the steps would be as follows:
I expect that would take actual cs coding instead of just messing with jsons, though, at least for the last part. I have in the works another mod, which is a code mod, and I'm currently playtesting it for balance and usability. So far it's working well, though it took multiple days of work and debugging to get it just to work as intended. With that in mind, maybe once it's ready for release, I'll come back to Clay From Dirt and make an "immersion" version. We'll see, though.
Honestly I would like the extra steps. Then again, I'm the kind of person who plays Vintage Story for the immersion, realism (if only somewhat more realistic), and difficulty.
Maybe you can make a version of this mods with those extra steps when you have more modding experience?
v1.0.3 released. Now with bulk recipe: a full barrel with a full stack of 64 dirt will make a full stack of 64 clay.
CandyCaprine
yup, now it works just fine for me aswell. thank you for all the efforts youve made so far ^^
Okay, NOW it should work properly. I hope. I deleted the file from my pesronal VS install, and have it loading only as a mod, and it works for me, so PLEASE let me know if it's still broken.
Wait, still not working for some reason. Give me a sec
1.0.1 released. It should work properly now.
Oh, shoot, that's weird. Don't know why it only works for me. I'll push an update in a moment.

I just opened the clayfromdirt.zip, extracted it, moved that folder and rezipped it
Here's the directory structure I had before I rezipped it
clayfromdirt/
- assets/
- game/
- recipes/
- barrel/
- clayfromdirt.json
- modinfo.json
Dakota1337
how did you do that? i tried what you said and the mod isnt loading anymore
I had the same problem. I managed to fix it by moving the recipes folder out of the assets/game/survival folder and just putting it under assets/game/
No idea if that's a good solution, but it works
CandyCaprine
i fear that i deleted all mods and left only this mod to test it out, both survival and creative. I know i'm asking too much but can you upload screenshoots of the process? Maybe im dumb enough to miss something so simple
@rabah None of those should cause any issues, as near as I can tell. Are you testing in Survival, or a different mode?

i think thats all i have, im not sure which one of those use the barrel
@rabah What other mods do you have that have barrel recipes?
CandyCaprine yup i tried everything. 1 liter of water to one of dirt. it didnt show me any option nor let me seal the barrel. maybe its a conflict with another mod?
rabah It works for me. Are you using equal parts water and dirt? It should work as long as you use fresh water and barren, low, or medium soil in equal amounts: one soil per one water.
doesnt work for some reason. do i have to use a specific type of dirt?
