Allow meteoric iron to be shaped using copper-age tools.

I am aware that another meteoric iron mod has already existed since version 1.19.4 called Meteoric Iron Overhaul created by Squonk.  Feel free to check it out.  It's a very nice content-only mod.  I usually try to avoid "reinventing the wheel" if possible, but I made this mod because it handles the refining and forging steps in a slightly more immersive way that could only be achieved through writing a C# code mod.  Also, Squonk's mod may be abandonware at this point as the author has not communicated for over a year now (as of May 2025).

The object of this mod is to transform meteoric iron from a mere curiosity only obtainable with iron-age tools to an "Oh Goody!" windfall for players in the early game. The crafting mechanics attempt to remain as true as possible to real life, albeit in a somewhat simplified and optimistic form.  This mod gives an incentive for players in the early game to keep an eye out for meteorite impacts!

How it works

In ideal circumstances, meteoric iron is actually a form of low-grade steel. It's an alloy of iron and nickel with a dash of carbon, smelted in the fires of creation and polished by the heat of atmospheric entry.  Mother nature has done one of the more difficult parts of the blacksmith's job -- refining and smelting -- leaving only the crafting of the end product outstanding.  Welding and shaping the metal does not require the same high temperatures as smelting.  It only needs heat sufficient to make the metal somewhat malleable, and tools hard enough to shape it, of which charcoal and copper can be (barely) sufficient.

Using this mod, meteorite blocks can be mined with a copper (or better) pickaxe and will drop from 1 to 3 (usually 1) large meteoric iron chunks (akin to iron blooms). These chunks can be heated with charcoal in a forge and shaped with a copper hammer on a copper anvil into meteoric iron ingots.  The ingots can then be worked into items using the same copper-age hammer and anvil tech.

Loose meteorite shards can be found around the impact site and collected.  These meteorite shards can be heated 2 at a time in a firepit, where they will weld together into a large meteoric iron chunk which can then be forged into ingots as described above. (Meteorite shards can also be merged in a bloomery if you prefer).

Unfinished work items can be re-processed into chunks by reheating them in a firepit.

Distinct from meteorite shards, any meteoric iron bits -- obtained through loot, trade, or breaking down meteoric iron items with a chisel -- can be combined 20 at a time in a firepit (or bloomery) where they will be processed into a large meteoric iron chunk, which can then be forged as described above.

Version 1.1.0 changes
-Slightly de-buffed meteoric iron chunk drop rate when mining meteorite blocks (dist invexp => strongerinvexp). Blocks will almost always drop only 1 meteoric iron chunk. On rare occasions they will drop 2 or even 3 chunks, but only *very* rarely.
-Increased the required heating time for meteorite shards and meteoric iron bits.  They now take longer to process.
-Changed temperature handling so that leaving a newly created meteoric iron chunk in the firepit will cause it to fairly quickly heat up to working temperature so it can immediately be transferred to an anvil.
-Added chiselling recipes that allow meteoric iron chunks and meteorite shards to be broken into meteoric iron bits.  This is a *lossy* process which does not return the full amount of materials. This has been done on purpose as a way to partially recover materials from an item that the player has smithed improperly.
-Changed all metalbit grid recipes to require both a hammer and chisel when breaking items down into metalbits (because it just makes sense).

Version 1.2.0 changes

-Added compatibility with Smithing Plus (hopefully no more crashes!)
-New graphic assets; meteorite shards
-New texture for meteoric iron anvil
-New drops; meteorites now occasionally drop crystallized nickel

Version 1.2.1 changes

-One extra change to support Smithing Plus; mark meteoric iron metal bits as smithable on a copper anvil

Can you make it so you can make the Iron Hatch thing for the Beehive Kiln / Coke oven can be made with meteoric iron too? If necessary you could check Fairyfloss' Early Beehive Kiln mod and use it to make a meteoric iron hatch?

💬 King_Wedgie, Jun 14th at 6:50 PM

Looks like the Smithing Plus compatibility update broke the bits-to-chunk firepit function when you have both this and that installed.

Also I wanted to echo Kappir's request below. As much as I love the mod's inspiration from realism, I do enjoy a bit of fantasy here and there.

💬 Kappir, Jun 14th at 12:45 AM

Could we get a config option to restore the meteoric iron texture back to vanilla?

💬 LunaGore, Jun 6th at 12:57 PM

ZippyWonderdust Sorry for the delay in response, I haven't had the issue since upgrading to 1.20.11 (was previously on 1.20.10) because I kinda gave up on using meteoric iron for anything, I'm using SmithingPlus and found that using the metal bits crashes the game so I've just been sticking to iron until I can progress to steel.

💬 King_Wedgie, Jun 5th at 8:53 PM

I appreciate the update! Yeah I'm back and forth on the rebalancing of the tiers myself. I just happened to have two impact sites near spawn in my current run and came out with like 20 ingots by the end of my first year, so the numbers got really big really fast.

💬 itinerare, Jun 4th at 5:34 PM

I support the tools being kept where they are in terms of tier but instead being more limited in quantity; it feels like it strikes a good balance between game balance and verisimilitude.

In any case, been enjoying the mod thus far-- thanks for your hard work on it!

King_Wedgie

Thanks for the great feedback. I really appreciate it!

I have released an update (1.1.0) that I hope addresses most of your items.

  1. Meteoric iron chunks will now quickly heat up to working temperature if you leave them in the firepit after they're done processing. This was the best I could manage with the current game mechanics available to me.
  2. I haven't adjusted the tier or durability of tools but I have de-buffed the drop rate of meteoric iron chunks.  Even a large meteorite site should only yield enough material to make 3 or 4 ingots.
  3. There are now chiseling recipes for breaking down chunks and shards.  If you "softlock" a meteoric iron chunk while smithing it, and you have a spare meteorite shard handy, you can break down the chunk into 15 metal bits and the shard into 5 metal bits and then combine the resulting 20 bits into a new chunk.

I hope this helps!

EDIT (4 days later): Apparently I live under a rock and have previously only ever found small meteorites in game! I just found an actual large one for the first time that yielded 9 meteorite blocks, which of course gave me 10 ingots worth of meteoric iron.  While this is more than the "3 or 4 ingots" worth stated above it is also much less than the average of 18 ingots I would have got using the vanilla game.  Meteoric iron yields with this mod enabled will be approximately 50% lower than what you would get in the vanilla game.  That seems to me like an acceptable tradeoff for getting tier-4 goods using only copper-age gear.

Loving this mod, but I have a couple of suggestions:

  1. Meteoric chunks come out hot when created in a firepit from the bits. Right now it just drops at base temp and you have to reheat it in a forge before you can smith with it.
  2. In terms of game balance, you may want to consider adjusting tier and durability of meteoric tools and weapons now that they can be acquired pretty easily, as long as you're lucky/observant enough to find an impact site. Going to tier 4 from 2 can be a bit much; maybe tier 3 levels would be better? (This suggestion has no basis in the comparative attributes of meteoric iron to other metals in real life.)

Addtionally, I had a bit of a bug where a chunk spawned with 41 material instead of the 42+ needed to make an ingot, and another time where I accidentally split too much material as well, both resulting in "softlocked" workable chunks. I was able to get around it thanks to the various bits-refunding mods out there, but for someone who doesn't use those it could be a problem. Maybe add a chiseling function that returns bits based on how much material is left in the workable chunk, so you can attempt to reforge it and try again later?

Again, these are just suggestions. Been enjoying this and a couple of the other mods you do as well. Keep it up!

ZippyWonderdust Thank you! I'm stuck on 1.20.7 or earlier because some mods i really enjoy aren't updated beyond that yet. (A lot of mods seem to skip .7 completely, yet cover all the rest, which i find odd lol). I greatly appreciate this, as i absolutely love metoeric iron!

💬 ZippyWonderdust , May 30th at 10:30 PM

LunaGore

That's... very odd... and something I never thought to test.  Meteoric iron chunks use the same shape file as iron blooms but they are a totally different item ID, so something like you describe should not be possible.  I'll have to see if I can reproduce this at my end.

What version of Vintage Story are you on? 1.20.11?

Can you give more details what you were doing? Was this a chunk from mining a meteorite or one you made by cooking shards in a firepit?

EDIT: I just tried doing what you described -- shift-clicking a meteoric iron chunk into a chest containing iron blooms -- and it worked just fine.  I tested on 1.20.11 with no mods loaded but my own.  Perhaps this is an interaction with another mod you are using?  If you want me to look into this in more detail please click on the "Issue Tracker" link at the top of this page and open a bug report on Codeberg, including as much detail as you can.

💬 LunaGore, May 30th at 8:54 PM

The meteoric iron chunk ate some of my iron blooms when I shift clicked them into a chest :(

When I make a mod I usually only verify it against the current stable version x.y.z of Vintage Story and perhaps version x.y.(z-1), because I figure most people tend to upgrade to the current version fairly promptly, so why bother with the extra testing effort?  However, since you asked so nicely, I have tested this mod against all stable versions 1.20.7+ and uploaded a new version 1.0.1 with modinfo.json adjusted to reflect this.  Enjoy!

💬 Haleon, May 30th at 6:44 AM

Does this work with 1.20.7? It shows up when I filter for 1.20.7, but I don't actually see a download for that version. I am just wondering if this is a Mod DB glitch or maybe I am missing something?

💬 ZippyWonderdust , May 29th at 3:27 PM

RowanSkie

Thanks for asking!

What used to be called "meteoric iron pieces" in the vanilla game have simply been renamed to "meteorite shards".  They still convert to ingots at a ratio of 2 to 1, but whereas in the vanilla game you would simply pop the meteoric iron pieces into a bloomery and out would come nicely polished ingots (which always struck me as a bit slapdash), you now heat them in a firepit where they merge into "large meteoric iron chunks" which you then shape into ingots on an anvil, the same way you would shape standard iron.

💬 ZippyWonderdust , May 29th at 3:16 PM

Strelitzia

Thank you! I hope you enjoy the mod.  It should pair well with Taska's Meteoric Expansion if and when they get around to updating it like they kinda-sorta promised.

💬 RowanSkie, May 29th at 7:04 AM

So what happens to the vanilla pieces that you usually have to get two of to make a meteoric iron ingot?

💬 Strelitzia, May 29th at 1:01 AM

Wonderful! I've been waiting for an updated form of Meteoric Iron Overhaul and this mod seems more in-depth so even better
