Window Display - Patches

Makes items sit properly on a window sill, gives candles their flame,
and converts your old windows across

To see what has been patched, check the changelog

The library has been renamed - read before updating. This mod is unchanged in what it does, but the library it needs is now Universal Display Lib, and its mod id has changed from windowdisplaylib to universaldisplaylib.

Delete the old windowdisplaylib zip and install Universal Display Lib in its place. Do not keep both - two libraries claiming the same block classes means neither will load. Update this mod and Window Display at the same time, since both now ask for the new id.

Server owners: the library is needed on client and server alike, so everyone connecting has to update too. Anything that fetches mods by id wants universaldisplaylib from now on.

Your worlds are safe. No block codes changed and no recipes changed - including the conversion recipes below. Everything you have placed comes back exactly as you left it.

Required Mods

Required

You will want

This mod only supplies data. Window Display is what gives you the windows to put it on.

What It Does

Makes items fit

Most things already work on a window without any help. If the game has ever told it how to sit on a shelf, it inherits that and turns up at the right size on its own.

This mod is for the ones that do not. Two cases come up:

  • •Items with no display data at all. These cannot be put on a window in the first place - the game simply refuses them. A lot of mod items fall in here, since their authors had no reason to think about shelves. A patch is what makes them placeable.
  • •Items that are simply too big. Plenty of things are sized for a shelf or the ground and look ridiculous on a window ledge, or will not fit at all. These get scaled and measured to something that suits a sill.

Sizes are worked out from the actual model and then checked by eye in game, not guessed. Where an item family shares one entry - all the antlers, all the amulets - it is sized off the largest one so nothing overhangs.

Gives candles their flame

Put a candle or an oil lamp on a sill and it lights the room either way - that part is Universal Display Lib and needs nothing from here. What this mod adds is the flame and the smoke: the actual particles, burning where the item is, turning with it when you rotate it.

Without it a lit candle glows but has no visible flame, which looks odd once you notice it.

It has to be set per item, because nothing in the game says where a wick is - the offset is found by looking at it and nudging it until the flame sits right. So only things somebody has tuned will burn. That is deliberate: an untuned item putting its flame in the wrong place looks worse than no flame at all.

Converts your old windows

If you are moving over from Window Storage or Vanilla Pane Storage, this is the part you want.

  • •Put an old window in the crafting grid on its own and you get the Window Display version back.
  • •It keeps your wood and glass. An oak leaded window comes back as an oak leaded window.
  • •Every old window has a route across, including the shelf and slab versions and both corner styles. Nothing is stranded.
  • •It is one way, and closed windows only - which is what a broken window drops anyway, so in practice it is just what you are holding.
  • •Shelf and slab versions come across as the plain window, since there is no direct equivalent. You lose the shelf, which is part of why it does not go back the other way.

The conversion recipes only appear if you actually have the old mod installed, so nothing clutters your handbook otherwise.

Safe To Install

  • •You do not need any of the mods it patches. Every patch is gated on the mod it belongs to and is skipped quietly if you do not have it. No errors, no red lines in your log.
  • •It adds to items rather than replacing what is there. If a mod author later adds their own shelf support, both sit side by side and nothing is trampled. That matters more than it sounds - the obvious way of writing these patches quietly deletes the game's own data.
  • •Nothing here changes how an item behaves anywhere else. It only describes how it should look sitting on a window.
  • •Safe to add or remove from an existing world at any time.

Requests Welcome

This mod is never really finished. If something you use will not go on a window, or goes on looking wrong, say so in the comments and I will take a look - it is usually a small job.

Useful things to include: the mod it comes from, the item, and a screenshot if it is a sizing problem rather than a "will not place at all" problem. I patch against the version I can install and test, so telling me which version you are on helps.

Known Issues

  • •A few conversion recipes clash with the old mods' own. Both mods use a single item in the grid for some things, so with both installed the game can pick either one. Which you get depends on the cell you put the window in - the top left gives the conversion. It sorts itself out once you stop running the old mod.
  • •Very long items display small. A walking stick is about four blocks long and every window is one block wide, so it has to shrink a fair way to fit at all. There is no size that is both in scale and placeable.
  • •Some things are deliberately edge-window only. Backpacks and metal plates are too deep for an ordinary sill, so they are sized to go on the edge version instead. Flip the window with a wrench and they fit.
  • •Liquid portions are not patched on purpose. Water, milk, tea and so on display as the container holding them, which is how the game treats them everywhere else. Patching them would leave a floating puddle on your windowsill.

A note on how this was made. AI was used in the creation of this mod - in the code, the JSON, and the text on this page (Images were made by me). The design, the decisions and every test in game are mine, and the only game source it was ever pointed at is Vintage Story's public GitHub repositories. If something is wrong, it is mine to fix - report it and I will.

Version 1.0.6

Fixed

  • • The vanilla Artistic bottle's glass showed as invisible in a window - it now shows as glass
1.0.5 windowdisplaypatches
1.22.0 - 1.22.7

Version 1.0.5

Helianthus flowers display again, the oil lamp flame is back on its wick, and two more mods described

What To Update

This and Universal Display Lib 1.1.3, together. This version needs lib 1.1.3 - the oil lamp flame is positioned differently there, and this release carries the matching values

Window Display is unchanged and stays at 1.0.4.

Nothing to do in your worlds. Items already on display keep their places

Fixed

  • • Helianthus flowers could not be displayed at all. The entries were aimed at vanilla's plant file rather than at Helianthus' own, so nothing reached the flowers. All 48 sizes and transforms were already correct and are unchanged; they simply point at the right place now. Flowers the entries never covered - both ragweeds, and a dozen species added since - display at a sensible default
  • • The oil lamp flame sits on the wick. It had drifted off the lamp when the lamp's display angle was last changed, and could not be corrected properly until the lib fix that ships alongside this

New

  • • Specialized Storage Renewed, 19 bags. Grouped by the shape each bag uses: the six linen bags, the six sturdy bags and the seven travel bags. The travel bags are a first pass - if one sits oddly, say so
  • • Metal Pots, 3 entries. The pot, clean and dirty

Changed

  • • Chonky Kitchenware's jug sits a little differently
1.0.4 windowdisplaypatches
1.22.0 - 1.22.7
1686 Aug 24th at 8:19 PM windowdisplaypatches_1.0.4.zip 1-click install

Version 1.0.4

BotaniaStory's tools and flowers described for display, Toolsmith has correct transforms

Before You Update

Nothing to do. This still needs Universal Display Lib 1.1.2, the same version 1.0.3 asked for, and every patch below is skipped silently unless you have the mod it belongs to

New

  • • BotaniaStory, 21 entries. Nine mana tools - saw, tongs, chisel, cleaver, hammer, wrench, knife, crowbar and shears - each measured rather than left to a default. The mana hammer stands upright the way the vanilla one does; the rest lie along the sill
  • • BotaniaStory's flowers, ten of them - the mystical flower, the four functional flora (hopperhock, jade amaranthus, pure daisy, withered amaranthus) and the five generating flora (daybloom, endoflame, hydroangeas, nightshade, rosa arcana). All stack so can go in flower pots
  • • The lexicon and the flower bag, positioned correctly and the hitbox is a more reasonable size
  • • Toolsmith. Fixed the positioning of the Hammer, Knife and Saw, so vanilla and this one now fit independently.

This mod only supplies data. Window Display is what gives you the windows to put it on, and Universal Display Lib is what makes the surfaces work.

1.0.3 windowdisplaypatches
1.22.0 - 1.22.6
672 Aug 15th at 9:45 PM windowdisplaypatches_1.0.3.zip 1-click install

Version 1.0.3

Every wild flower and nine herbs sized on their own, seashells retuned, and a few things that could not be placed at all

Before You Update

This needs Universal Display Lib 1.1.2, not 1.1.1. The new clutter entries are what triggered the mesh-corruption bug that version fixes, so update the pair together

Coming from 1.0.2? That is what is live, and everything below is new to you. An earlier 1.0.3 was packaged internally for parity with the other two mods and never released - it held nothing 1.0.2 did not

New

  • • Every wild flower sized on its own - bluebell, catmint, cornflower, cow parsley, daffodil, edelweiss, forget-me-not, golden poppy, heather, mugwort, orange mallow, red top grass, western gorse, wild daisy and woad, with the lupine resized as well. They shared one size before, so the short ones sat in mid-air and the tall ones overhung
  • • Herbs, nine of them - basil, chamomile, cilantro, lavender, marjoram, mint, saffron, sage and thyme, each measured rather than sharing a default
  • • Pottery art from the clutter block
  • • Books - all of them, every colour and condition, sized correctly and positioned in the item selection box
  • • The empty oil lamp and the dirty pot, neither of which could be placed before
  • • Chandelier Craft - the metal candle cup. Its box is deliberately shallow so a candle sits down in the cup rather than perching on top of it. Skipped silently when that mod is not installed, like every other modded patch here

Changed

  • • Three pieces of clutter fixed. Most clutter already sits correctly and needs no patch at all - these are the ones that did not. The armillary sphere was wrong, sized as a 5 x 3 x 5 lump at full scale, and the music box and the astrolabe had no entry
  • • Seashells retuned. All seven types are smaller and more uniform, and each carries its own resting angle rather than sharing one, so more fit along a sill and they sit flatter
  • • The metal plate and the ingot resized, and both flowerpots with them
  • • The seashell patch names its target file explicitly now - it had no file key at all, which is a silent no-op waiting to happen

Removed

  • • The amulets and night-vision patch. It covered the two seraph neck items and the Jonas night vision device; those fall back to vanilla's own shelf sizing

This mod only supplies data. Window Display is what gives you the windows to put it on, and Universal Display Lib is what makes the surfaces work.

1.0.2 windowdisplaypatches
1.22.0 - 1.22.6

THE LIBRARY HAS BEEN RENAMED - PLEASE READ BEFORE UPDATING

Window Display Lib is now Universal Display Lib, and its mod id has changed from
windowdisplaylib to universaldisplaylib.

DELETE THE OLD LIBRARY ZIP and install Universal Display Lib in its place.
Keeping both means neither will load. This version requires it, so update the
library and Window Display at the same time.

YOUR WORLDS ARE SAFE, and so are the conversion recipes - no block codes and no
recipes changed.

ADDED

- Ape's Flower Pots. Pots and planters from that mod now take plants on a sill
the same way the vanilla ones do.

- Bitter Brew, Scoop of Jam, and Tankards and Goblets are now supported.

- More vanilla items - clay vessels, flowerpots, lamps and lanterns, metal and
tools have all been revisited and sized properly.

CHANGED

- Now requires Universal Display Lib 1.1.0 instead of Window Display Lib.

TEMPORARILY REMOVED

- Patches for walking sticks, A Culinary Artillery, Tailor's Delight and
Vichny's Backpack are out of this release while they are re-checked. Those
items go back to their normal behaviour on a sill until the patches return -
nothing is broken and nothing in your world is affected. Say so in the
comments if one of them is holding you up and I will prioritise it.

It seems some non-flower plants cannot be placed in flowerpots in windows, such as crotons and tall ferns. I wonder if this could be patched?

Saplings seem to have some issues too, clipping inside pots.

I only tuned the flowers, I can look at the saplings. From what I remember when I was looking at what ones to add, that there are some plants that won't work due to the design/size of them but I can look into it
