Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.22.1 - 1.22.3, potentially outdated):
backrooms_0.1.1.zip  1-click install

Noclip out of reality and into a wrong, humming place that does not connect the way it should.

The Backrooms adds an early experimental liminal dimension to Vintage Story. Players can fall through weak points in reality or enter through special portals, arriving in an endless yellow maze of rooms, corridors, buzzing lights, and unstable connections.

Special Notice

I hate that I even have to make this abundantly clear, but there has been an accusation thrown around, so let me put this to bed here and now.

  • I used AI in a singular project to help flesh out a plan.md file to help me avoid Feature Creep. In my 20+ years of programming, including web design and front end/backend development, its the one thing that has killed more of my projects than anything else.
  • No, I do not use AI in any of my coding projects in any way that ever becomes public facing. The code you get from me is authored by my hands alone. I'd rather do it by hand than spend 2-3 hours fixing things I could have done myself in an hour or less.
  • That will never change as I have a very strong stance on taking the lazy way out in everything I do.

Early Access Warning

This is an early access test build. The core idea is playable, but the mod is still under active development and uses experimental dimension generation, portal travel, and persistent chunk connectivity. Back up your world before testing.

Do not remove this mod or Manifold while players are inside the Backrooms. Players may become stranded, and saves with active custom dimension state may behave unpredictably if required mods are removed mid-run.

How it works

Noclip Events

Players with low temporal stability may occasionally fall through reality while grounded. Known weak spots become more likely to trigger again, and the Backrooms records where those weak spots lead.

Level 0

The current release contains Level 0: a persistent, streaming dimension made from yellow rooms, tight partitions, doorway-sized passages, fluorescent ceiling lights, and unstable chunk-to-chunk connections.

Escaping

When a player enters by noclipping, the mod attempts to place an exit portal near their landing area. The exit may not be immediately obvious, but it should be nearby. Future versions will make escape routes more atmospheric and less purely mechanical.

Unstable Connectivity

The Backrooms does not behave like a normal place. Chunk boundaries are tracked as connections that can remain stable, become unstable, or break. Frequently traveled paths resist decay, while neglected routes may close off over time.

Server Admin Notes

  • Back up saves before testing.
  • Do not disable this mod or Manifold while players are inside the Backrooms.
  • This build is intended for testing worldgen, portal travel, lighting, and dimension persistence.
  • If a world becomes unstable during testing, try reproducing in a fresh test world and report what happened.

Implemented Features

  • Persistent Backrooms Level 0 dimension
  • Temporal stability based noclip events
  • Weak spot persistence and repeat-trigger behavior
  • Exit portals for noclip victims
  • Room-based procedural Level 0 generation
  • Chunk connectivity drift: stable, unstable, and broken routes
  • Admin test commands: /backrooms and /exitbackrooms

Planned Future Content

  • Ruin structures with deliberate Backrooms entry portals
  • Client-side disorientation effects, audio polish, and atmosphere
  • Fear or sanity mechanics
  • Backrooms entities
  • Craftable unstable door entry path
  • Config options for noclip chance, thresholds, and worldgen behavior
  • Additional Backrooms levels beyond Level 0

Current Status early access

This mod is currently a test release for broader feedback. The core dimension, noclip entry, exit portals, and Level 0 generation are implemented, but balance, stability, content density, and atmosphere are still being developed. Bug reports and server feedback are welcome.

Hi nice mod, It's missing a last floor as mantle in case, no void to die. Also could have a base in personnal backroom if it possible where we can tp in with a remote or command. Hope it help, thanks.

There is future plans to add in facilties that mirror the Async facility in the Kane Pixels version of the Backrooms, so there will be ways to build entryways

Ooh, I love this. Is there any intention on having ways to get resources in the Backrooms in order to do Vintage Story progression in a Backrooms only playthrough? Like maybe there could be a way to cut up squares of carpet to craft into armor, or we could make tools out of concrete chunks from Level 1, or get access to metals by breaking pipes in Level 2 and melting it down molds, etc etc. Could even add a "carpet fungus" that can be grown on wet carpet for food. I'll reply to this message with further ideas if you're amenable to such. Great work so far!

Oooo, I like this. I'll be honest, I never thought past the intial systems. That and a few creatures specific to the Backrooms that would have drops that can be used and eaten.

For the record guys, making suggestions and giving feedback is never seen as rude. I actually revel in it, so by all means bring it to my attention ❤️

Love the mod concept, and I have a little feedback. For some reason my backrooms are made entirely of granite and paper lanters, and I spawn on the exit portal. Also, the light level is too bright so there are no monsters. There are no flourescent lights or buzzing sounds for some reason. I dont want to come off as overly critical, because its a test build and I love the concept. Also, what if you added little drawings of arrows and faces like in the Kane Pixels video? The arrows could point to an exit portal so that finding the exit can be less tedious. And perhaps some loot so that theres a reason to stick around and put yourself in danger

If it doesn't find the requisit Pepper's Clutter and Decor it falls back to base game test blocks.
As for the monsters, I'm working with a friend to make Backrooms lore friendly mobs.

The lack of buzzing sound is a bug that I am trying to find out why sounds aren't working on the Backrooms dimension.

The custom mobs may have loot and also from future versions I plan to have ruins and such from the same overworld locations above be copied to the Backrooms and offset into walls and such randomly. That is still very much in development.

Before anything else, I apologise if I come off as rude at all, I'm just very passionate about "proper" enjoyment of the Backrooms (as according to me, for me). When the mod gets a bit bigger and more developed, would you consider a kind of "Backrooms Classic" mode that strips out everything but Layer 0?

This looks like it could be fun. Waiting for the update!
Fingerscrossed you get it working.

Right now the main thing missing is figuring out how generating ruins in the world works. It's one thing to completely hijack the world gen entirely in a separate "dimension" its another to sprinkle things around.

Says dependency is missing despite having peppers downloaded

I think because I'd built her mod myself in my tests, might be why it's not working for everyone else.

I'm gonna be sending her my copy of her code cuz I did have to change a few things. So it might be the reason.

@HollyJollyHolly: Excited to tinker with this when it is working!

I'm waiting to confirm she updated, I sent her the edits I'd made to get it working.

By the way, things should be working, it was a simple enough fix that we figured out. Though for some reason the buzzing lights sound only works on her lights outside the Backrooms, which defeats the purpose, but thats why we test things.

Where is a buzzing sound? Can't find any sounds in the mod

@DanaCraluminum: Where is a buzzing sound? Can't find any sounds in the mod

the buzzing sound is an ambient sound attached to the fluorescent lights from the Pepper's Clutter and Decor mod! if you have ambient sounds turned off you wont hear them

I'm still trying to figure out why its not working. Might have to have audrae remove it from her mod and add my own ambient sound in code.

Fun fact, if you spawn the light outside the Backrooms themselves in the Overworld, the buzzing works just fine. So thats an issue for me to figure out. Wonder if it has anything to do with how I was having issues with lights in my other Manifold-based mod.
