Adds bonfires to the game.

Continued from Bonfires original idea by Zarkonnen; with permission.

This version has been updated to work with 1.21.x. The code has been largely rewritten, and while it appears to work, it still needs a fair bit of refactoring and tidying up.
Use with care in worlds you actually care about until version 1.0.0 releases.

Features

  • A Cosy Bonfire: Once lit, the bonfire acts as a long-lasting heat and light source, perfect for a temporary basecamp or a town square. It burns 4x longer than a regular fire.
  • Fire-Setting Mechanic: Build a bonfire next to solid rock or ore veins. When the fire burns out, the intense heat will crack the adjacent stone. Cracked ore and rock is one tier easier to mine, allowing you to access valuable resources sooner with lower-tier tools.
  • Shatter Rock: Don't want to waste your pickaxe on solid rock? Apply a second bonfire to an already cracked block to shatter it completely, breaking it into its stone or ore drops.
  • Integration with the Real Smoke mod.

How to Use Your Bonfire

  1. Craft a Bonfire Base from the handbook.
  2. Place the base on the ground, directly adjacent to the rock or ore you wish to crack.
  3. Add 3x 4 Firewood to build the bonfire up to its full size (building a bonfire takes 12 firewood total).
  4. Add more Firewood to fuel the bonfire. It can hold up to 32 pieces but for cracking you only need 1.
  5. Light the bonfire with a torch or firestarter.
  6. Wait for the fire to burn out. The process takes time!
  7. Collect your rewards! The directly(!) adjacent rock and ore will now be cracked.
  8. (Optional) Apply a second bonfire to the cracked blocks to break them completely without using a pickaxe.

Planned Features (Will decide based on feedback)

  • Either remove coal ores from the fire-settings mechanic or make them combustible?
  • Option to prevent monsters and animals from spawning and make them keep distance within a radius while lit?
  • Add config-file with option for burn-time?
  • Increase Area of Effect? Right now only touching ores and rocks will crack. Maybe make it a radius? Also as config-option?
  • Balance tweaks? Need feedback for this!

I’m fairly new to Vintage Story modding, so I used AI as a code-checking and learning aid. **It did not (re)write the mod**, it merely helped me understand what I was doing and added comments where needed.

For now, sdcreenshots can be found here: Imgur-link

Suggestion for config option to disable the stone cracking to mke it a purely cosmetic/light setup. Need some gondor beacons.

Hydromancerx Bonfires have lightlevel 40. I will add a config for that in the (near) future. I don't have much time this month (because of the holidays), but I hope to have a big update in january with some config-options.

Maschinenmensch They will burn (or so I've heard). But why doesn't your friend do some murdering testing and get back to us?

Maschinenmensch, Dec 7th at 6:29 PM

Asking for a friend, but if a seraph were to be placed above the bonfire, would they burn or asphyxiate?

osayra, Dec 1st at 9:24 PM

right now for screenshots I guess you have to embed them in the text box, drag and drop is broken.

Hydromancerx, Dec 1st at 5:31 PM

Please make them really bright so you can light up a huge area. Also so you can use them as long distant signal fires! Gondor calls for aid!

Current version (0.2.0) has a non-critical bug where the added fuel will not drop when breaking the bonfire. This will be resolved in the next version I will post tomorrow.

RumpleRatskin I will consider the suggestion of using something to drop in the fire in order to remove/prevent monsters as an option.

The Charcoal suggestion falls outside of this mod I think. Vanilla firepits do not drop charcoal (afaik?), I do know there is a mod that does that.

Ideas i thought of for bonfires :)

Temporal Flame

  • Basically, you are able to add a temporal gear or temporal fragments (ya know, dust) to the bonfire which will turn it into temporal fire (aka b l u e)
  • For roughly a 10 block radius around the temporal fire, all rust creatures would be prompted to leave the area.

Cheaper Charcoal

  • Since making charcoal requires a charcoal pit, its a bit annoying to get, but it is helped by the fact you can randomly get charcoal from campfires when broken so I thought hmm.
  • So the idea is that you either....
    • Place a bonfire to make a charcoal pit quicker (3/4 the time)
    • OR entirely full bonfires (32 firewood) drop a decent amount of charcoal (like 10 - 15)
