A simple, fun mod that adds umbrellas to the game. When you hold an umbrella in either hand, you cannot get wet from the rain. You'll still get wet if you dunk yourself in water, of course!
Umbrellas are crafted in three stages using the following recipes.
Plain or dyed cloth (not mordanted) OR Checkered or Dark cloth from Tailor's Delight OR Wool from Wool & More.
Copper, Brass, Electrum, Tin Bronze, Black Bronze, Bismuth Bronze, Iron, Meteoric Iron, or Steel bits.
Any support beam except very aged or rotten OR Bamboo Stakes.
Beeswax is intended as the method to waterproof the cloth.
First, choose your cloth colors and pattern. Using the same colors will produce a solid canopy. Using two different colors horizontally will produce an alternating gore pattern. Using two different colors vertically will produce an alternating ring pattern.
Did you guys know that the term for the triangular panel pieces of an umbrella are called gores? I didn't until about eighteen hours ago.
OR
OR
Then, take your canopy and a piece of beeswax and put them together. This waterproofs the canopy.

Coming soon: alternate waterproofing sources!
Now you just need somewhere to attach the canopy!
Take a support beam (or a bamboo stake) and two metal bits of your choosing. You can't mix and match metal. This makes the handle and fittings.
OR
Once you have both pieces, simply put them together for an umbrella.

Features I'm happy about:
- Umbrella can be held in either hand.
- Over 1200 6000 170,000 combinations of wood, cloth, metal fittings, and patterns.
- A single handbook entry for each stage of the umbrella!
Things I'd like to add in the near future:
- Placing the umbrella down on the ground, leaning it against the wall, etc.
- Opening/closing the umbrella (won't provide protection when closed!).
- Twirling the umbrella.
- Blocks to store the umbrella (wall hangers, baskets)
- Improved animations (There's probably clipping I haven't checked for with armor. Additionally, you can equip two umbrellas at once and they clip into each other pretty badly. But who on earth is going to dual wield umbrellas?)
- Support for various mods that I personally use (once I figure out what it needs to interact with, but things like alternate waterproofing materials, cloths, woods, metal bits, etc.)
- Parasols (for Immersive Body Temperature cooling!)
- Sound effects.
NOTE: As of version 1.2.1, this mod now hard requires Attribute Rendering Library. With the number of variations now over 6000, this should ideally improve load times. There's some wizardry in my code to convert old Umbrellas over to this system, and it appears to work seamlessly from my testing. Thanks for the suggestion, Cthugha!
Note: This mod is 100% slop! Codex made the whole thing. Even the umbrella model!

Fixed a major bug with the handbook when trying to view constituent items for the umbrella items (metal bits, beeswax, etc.) would crash the game.

Retraction Reason:This version of the mod causes the game to crash 100% of the time when viewing the handbook entries for items that are used in the crafting of umbrella canopies and umbrella frames, such as metal bits, support beams, or beeswax. Changelog:

- Implemented Attribute Rendering Library, which should improve load times. At the behest of @Cthugha I added Attribute Rendering Library as a dependency. With the addition of support for Tailor's Delight and Wool & More, the umbrella has over six thousand possible variants. I'm no programmer, but I could understand how that's problematic. From my testing, there's also support for upgrading from old versions of Umbrella, so you shouldn't lose any umbrellas you already made. Huzzah!

what about using umbrela to slowly glide down? Wind would be a hindrance, and strong wind could sweep the player away
Mary Poppins mode is being heavily debated. Stay tuned!
I think that should stick to bein' a config option that players/server owners could enable if they want to. I wouldn't want that on my server, but I love the flare of an umbrella for roleplay. c:
I'm begrudingly impressed by how good a mod that's self-described as "100% slop" looks.
Though the fact you wrote up a description and actually took screenshots probably invalidates the claim of "100%". It's certainly more than many do.
Out of curiosity, did you go over the code and so forth for actual human quality assurance? I'd assume so given the aformentioned actual effort.
I might actually pick this up, it would be useful for my server.
Your words are very kind, thank you! I'll be frank - I have not done a thorough code review of what Codex put out. While I have decades of experience futzing around in game files, I'm not a programmer in the slightest. I have a basic understanding of plain language (for example, editing JSON for animation transforms), but the actual code is mostly moonrunes to me. This is the main reason I've kept everything open source (other than the fact that I feel it's just the right thing to do for a mod), that way, anyone that actually knows what the hell they're doing can call me out if something is screwy. That mindset is what led me to switching the mod over to Attribute Renderling Library, for example.
I can tell you that it's been working fine in the multiplayer server I've been playing on, so I'd be delighted to see others use it in theirs. Thanks again!
I've yearned for this mod, thanks for making it!
Can I Mary Poppins off a cliff with it?
Not yet! Perhaps a Jonas umbrella is in the future...
But.. does it have the sound of pittering rain?
Added to the to-do list!
Kilroy Hi! This is a great mod; I made a translation for it.
Thanks so much! I'll implement this with the next major revision.
I was planning to just drop the translation in, but I think with my switch over to Attribute Rendering Library, it would no longer work. Sorry about that.
It seems like they added their own attribute system in version 1.22.0 - is it really worse than a separate mod dependency? (Sorry if this is a silly question; I don't really know much about it.)
Super simple, straight forward, and reasonable. Nice mod! :3
A mod that adds one item (and variants) with a functionality is a great lil bit o' sprinkling.
Does it work with checkered cloth or wool?
Thanks!
At the moment, there's no compatibility with alternate cloth sources from mods. I will put that on the to-do list!
For a moment I questioned if a wool umbrella was even a thing- it is! Delightful. 🐏
On that note, be sure to add bamboo as a umbrella handle? c:
Tailor's Delight and Wool support added today, along with bamboo as a valid option!
Lovely work, thank you for your consideration. c:
