THE WORKING CLASSES — VINTAGE STORY 1.22

The Working Classes

Compatibility & Bug Fixing Fork — Version 1.0.13

Choose a profession with its own strengths, weaknesses and crafting recipes. Work together with other players or explore a different way to progress on your own, with fixes to keep The Working Classes working on Vintage Story 1.22.

This is an independently maintained fork of Vivi_IX's The Working Classes. Install it in place of the original mod. It keeps the original profession-based gameplay while fixing broken recipes, crashes and problems with supported companion mods.

Requirements: Vintage Story 1.22.3 or later within 1.22.x, Trait Acquirer Modded Classes 0.9.17 or later, and Expanded Matter 3.7.0 or later.
Multiplayer: Install the same versions of this fork and its dependencies on the server and every connecting client.

Installation

  1. Remove the original The Working Classes package, or the previous version of this fork, from your Mods folder.
  2. Install this fork and its required dependencies.
  3. Restart the game or server.

Do not install the original mod and this fork together. Keep only one Working Classes package in your Mods folder.

What It Adds

  • Ten profession-based classes: each with its own strengths, weaknesses and role.
  • Profession recipes: specialised crafting options tied to your chosen class.
  • Class traits: perks and drawbacks that change how you approach everyday tasks.
  • In-game guides: handbook information covering the professions and their crafting options.
  • Improved Crocks: larger food-storage crocks that hold up to 12 servings.

The aim of this fork is to repair and maintain the original mod, rather than redesign its classes or change their balance.

Optional Compatibility

These integrations load when the matching mod is installed:

  • Alodh's Combat Overhaul Fork
  • FoodShelves
  • Alchemy
  • Millwright — versions 1.3.3 through 1.3.4.
  • Tailor's Delight

Expanded Matter compatibility has been checked with versions 3.7.0 through 3.8.1. Other compatibility patches inherited from the original mod are reviewed as problems are reported.

Updating an Existing World

This fork is intended to replace the original Working Classes release for Vintage Story 1.22. If you already use this fork, replace its old package with the current release.

Back up your world before updating. On multiplayer servers, update the server and all connecting clients together.

Version 1.0.13 — What Changed

  • Crock appearance: restored the Improved Crock's original ceramic texture.
  • Food names: filled Improved Crocks now show what they contain, including “Rotten Food” when the contents have spoiled.
  • Sealing band: fixed the texture to match vanilla crocks.
  • Sealing: Improved Crocks now use vanilla sealing interactions.
  • Removed: the old crafting-grid recipe for sealing Improved Crocks.

Changelogs for 1.0.12 and earlier are available with their releases in the Files section.

Credits

This is an independent fork, rather than an official release from Vivi_IX. The original classes, artwork, recipes, writing and gameplay remain credited to the original creator and contributors.

  • Vivi_IX: original creator of The Working Classes.
  • Original contributors: contributions to the original mod.
  • AzureTai: compatibility work, fixes, testing and ongoing maintenance.
  • Sharidan: testing, package review and release support.
  • Vintage Story Community: bug reports, testing and feedback.

The original source is available in Vivi_IX's project repository. The changes maintained by this fork are available in this fork's repository.

Reporting a Problem

Please use this fork's GitHub issue tracker. Include:

  • Your game version, this fork's version, and your complete mod list with version numbers.
  • The affected class, item or recipe.
  • What you were doing when the problem occurred, and the steps needed to reproduce it.
  • The relevant client and server logs, including the complete crash log if the game crashed.

If possible, check whether the problem also happens with only this fork and its required dependencies installed. Please only report it to the original project if you have also reproduced it with the original, unmodified mod.

AI Use & Development Responsibility

I use AI to help with tasks such as reviewing logs, checking compatibility, writing documentation and occasionally creating artwork. I make the final decisions and take responsibility for what I release.

Every mod I release is personally reviewed, integrated, tested and verified by me before publication.

I review and check any suggested changes before including them in a release. That applies to code, compatibility patches, artwork and documentation alike.

AI is a tool in my workflow, not the author of my mods.

Version 1.0.10

Class and Trait Registration Fix

  • Removed two obsolete pre-1.0.5 class and trait registration patch files that were unintentionally included in versions 1.0.8 and 1.0.9.
  • These legacy files duplicated the newer Vintage Story 1.22 class and trait definitions already supplied by The Working Classes.
  • Resolved duplicate registration of:
    • 10 Working Classes character classes.
    • 40 Working Classes traits.
  • Eliminated the associated duplicate-registration and potential undefined-behaviour warnings.
  • Restored the class and trait registration structure used by official TWC 1.0.5 and this fork's 1.0.6/1.0.7 releases.

No class definitions, trait definitions, profession balance, or intended gameplay behaviour have been changed by this fix.

Combat Overhaul Fork Compatibility

  • Removed the obsolete compatibility patch for the original Combat Overhaul.
  • Added compatibility for Alodh's Combat Overhaul Fork (combatoverhaulfork).
  • Updated the compatibility patch for the current Vintage Story 1.22 / TWC class configuration format.
  • Restored the intended Combat Overhaul weapon proficiency additions to all affected Working Classes professions.
  • Updated Blackguard to use the current Combat Overhaul Fork trait set.
  • Updated Tailor to receive Self Defence without incorrectly receiving Trembling Aim.
  • Existing Working Classes profession traits are preserved when Combat Overhaul proficiencies are added.
  • Combat Overhaul support remains fully optional and is only applied when the fork is installed.

The following class combinations were individually validated in-game:

  • Blackguard
  • Tailor
  • Miner
  • Farmer
  • Lumberjack
  • Blacksmith
  • Cook
  • Alchemist
  • Squire
  • Potter
  • Carpenter
  • Healer

FoodShelves Compatibility Fix

  • Restored compatibility with FoodShelves when using this fork.
  • FoodShelves checks for the original theworkingclasses mod ID before enabling support for Working Classes Improved Crocks.
  • This fork uses the separate theworkingclasseswspatch mod ID while retaining the original theworkingclasses: asset namespace, causing the upstream FoodShelves compatibility patch to be skipped.
  • Added a fork-side compatibility patch restoring theworkingclasses:improvedcrock-* support on FoodShelves universal holders.

Improved Crock placement on FoodShelves has been tested in-game.

Millwright Compatibility Cleanup

  • Added missing server-side patch metadata to applicable Millwright recipe compatibility operations.
  • Prevents clients from unnecessarily attempting to apply patches to server-only recipe assets.

Tailor's Delight Compatibility Cleanup

  • Added server-side patch metadata to the Tailor's Delight twine recipe compatibility patch.
  • Prevents unnecessary client-side attempts to patch server-only recipe assets.

Washery Grade Coke Texture Fix

  • Fixed the texture used by Crushed Washery Grade Coke.
  • Replaced an obsolete leadoxide texture reference with the current crushed galena resource texture.
  • Confirmed correct rendering in-game.

Additional Validation

The three TWC-native clothing items used by Working Classes profession gear were investigated following client-side class gear resolution warnings:

  • Lumberjack Shirt
  • Comfy Lumberjack Pants
  • Smithing Mask

All three are correctly registered, appear in the Survival Handbook, render normally, and are used correctly by their respective class previews.

The remaining client messages are therefore load-order/resolution warnings rather than missing or broken Working Classes assets, and no changes to these items were required.

Dedicated-server testing has also confirmed:

  • Exactly 10 Working Classes classes load.
  • Exactly 40 Working Classes traits load.
  • No duplicate class or trait registration warnings remain.
  • Clean startup both with and without Combat Overhaul Fork.
  • Successful client join and disconnect.
  • Clean world save and server shutdown.

Release History

Versions 1.0.8 and 1.0.9 have been retracted because their release archives unintentionally contained the obsolete class and trait registration files described above.

Users of either version should update to 1.0.10.

Retraction Reason:

Release Retracted

This release has been retracted because it unintentionally included obsolete pre-1.0.5 class and trait registration patch files alongside the newer Vintage Story 1.22 class and trait configuration files.

As a result, The Working Classes classes and traits could be registered twice, producing duplicate-registration warnings and creating the potential for undefined behaviour.

The affected duplicate registrations included:

  • 10 Working Classes character classes.
  • 40 Working Classes traits.

No save corruption has been identified, but this release should no longer be used.

Please update to version 1.0.10 or later, which removes the obsolete registration files and restores the correct class and trait registration structure.

Changelog:

Version 1.0.9

Fixed

  • Fixed a reproducible client crash when opening the Improved Crock entry in the Survival Handbook.
  • The Improved Crock crafting recipe was still using the obsolete Vintage Story crock wildcard game:crock-burned-*.
  • Updated the recipe to use the current fired crock block pattern used by Vintage Story 1.22.x.
  • The Improved Crock handbook page and crafting recipe can now be viewed normally.

Compatibility

  • Retains all fixes from versions 1.0.6 through 1.0.8.
  • No intentional changes have been made to class balance, professions, traits or normal gameplay progression.
  • Existing worlds using this fork can be updated directly from 1.0.8.

Alchemy Compatibility Fix

  • Fixed outdated Alchemy compatibility recipe paths that were still targeting the old Alchemy 1.7.23 file structure.
  • Updated the affected potion flask compatibility recipe patches to use the current Alchemy recipe locations.
  • Updated the Clear Quartz recipe output to match the revised recipe structure and item used by newer Alchemy versions.
  • Restored compatibility across Alchemy 1.8.0-rc.1 through 2.1.18.
  • Resolved the repeated server errors reporting that alchemy:recipes/grid/potionflask.json could not be found.

All affected recipes have been verified in-game and are now loading and functioning correctly.

Version 1.0.7

Fixed

  • Fixed a recipe conflict between the Working Classes Copper Pan and the vanilla Copper Roof Tip.

  • Inverted the Copper Pan crafting recipe so that the copper sheet is placed above the hammer.

  • The Copper Pan can now be crafted reliably without the crafting grid selecting the vanilla Copper Roof Tip recipe instead.

Compatibility

  • Retains all fixes introduced in version 1.0.6, including the whetstone-related anvil crash fix.

  • No intentional changes have been made to class balance, profession traits, ingredient costs, or Copper Pan functionality.

  • Existing worlds can be updated directly from version 1.0.6.

169 Jul 24th at 5:18 PM theworkingclasseswspatch_1.0.6.zip 1-click install

Version 1.0.6 Changes:

Fixed

  • Replaced the whetstone’s incorrect ItemIngot class with the standard Item class.

  • Prevented the whetstone from being interpreted as a forgeable metal ingot.

  • Fixed the client crash caused by anvil interaction-help processing.

  • Preserved the whetstone as a normal usable game item.

Packaging

  • Forked from The Working Classes version 1.0.5.

  • Updated the package version to 1.0.6.

  • Assigned the separate Mod ID theworkingclasseswspatch.

  • Renamed the package to The Working Classes - Whetstone Patch.

  • Added clear fork identification and attribution.

Package Refactoring

  • Removed the unnecessary DLL from the package. Neither the original mod nor this fork contains C# code; the mod consists entirely of JSON definitions and assets.
  • Replaced the whetstone’s ItemIngot class with the standard Item class.

  • Prevented the whetstone from being processed as a forgeable metal ingot.

  • Fixed the client crash associated with anvil interaction help.

  • Preserved the intended whetstone item and its existing functionality.

  • Retained the original classes, traits, recipes, assets, and handbook content.

  • Made no intentional class, profession, or gameplay-balance changes.

Installation

This is a complete patched fork of The Working Classes and should be installed instead of the original version.

  1. Remove the original theworkingclasses mod from your Mods folder.

  2. Install The Working Classes - Whetstone Patch.

  3. Make sure all required dependencies are installed.

  4. Restart the game or server.

Do not install the original mod and this patched fork at the same time. Both packages contain the same underlying Working Classes content and may conflict.

Dependencies

  • Vintage Story: 1.22.3

  • Trait Acquirer Modded Classes: 0.9.17

@VidarUlfGunnar: so far everything works wonderfully only issue found so far is the bowyer trait does not stay when learned. When players log out after its been learned and log back in it is gone from the traits learned.

Thanks for the feedback, it’s greatly appreciated!

Update:

This appears to be a known issue with Trait Acquirer Modded Classes, rather than an issue introduced by this fork.

The mod author currently notes the following on the Trait Acquirer Modded Classes description:

“The Bowyer trait also has a bad habit of disappearing off of players when given by trait acquirer.”

So the behaviour you are seeing, where the Bowyer trait disappears again after logging out and back in, matches a known issue already documented by Trait Acquirer Modded Classes.

Crash when looking at the wooden axle recipe (and possibly other millwright recipies, haven't tested fully yet.) Crash log mentions liquid crafting, might be an incompat with the expanded foods oils recipies?

@AzureTai: perfect ill go grab them and then get back to you.

turned out to be an expanded foods addon doing something strange, that for some reason only causes crashes when class specific recipes are enabled. Nothing to do with you, sorry!

Its probaply due to my mod list but the game crashes when i click the improved crooks...

System.ArgumentException: Attempted to resolve the recipe ingredient wildcard Block game:crock-burned-* but there are no such items/blocks!

I understand why it happens just not what causes it....

If you have the time, add this to the issue tracker, and include your full crashlog, main-client.log and main-debug.log as well as your mod list and ill take a look and see if i cant figure out whats causing the crash for you.

@BertiBert: I tried that first but idk if i am stupid or the link is not correct.

have checked voer the repo and everything is enabled for public access to creating repositories so that perticular restriction is being applied to your account by gitgub themselves not the repoisitiry, id advise sending them an email regarding this.

for now please add those files and the error report, and your mod list directly here.

No worries and i believe i have identified this and have a fix, just tracking down another adjacent issue i noticed while looking in to your's. will be all fixed in the next releace.

Thanks for the feedback, have adjusted the title to better reflect the status of this fork.

Oh no I mean the file name doesn't match the other files names of your previus updates, so it'll get confusing if main mod actually gets updated, but doesn't fix all the issues thus this mod still needing put into place. Then again, by that time you'll most likely already have other updates and circling back around to old file titles.
