New Kambucha update!

Note of Liqueurs: This is an experimental feature and I'd really like everyone's opinion on it--this might need to just be a completely separate mod, but if everyone is fine with a tiny bit of bloat I plan to add quite a few more alcoholic drinks and the ability to make mixed drinks. Let me know your thoughts and what sort of alcoholics drinks/mixed drinks you'd like to see! Also, I really simplified the overall process for making liqueurs (there was originally an original 'concentraded x,y,z' step)--let me know what you think about that as well!

Brewing

Two clay vessels you craft and fire in a kiln.

The Kettle sits on a lit firepit with one herb (or more for compounds) and a litre of water, and brews hot tea in about thirty seconds. Hot teas warm the player and (if Hydrate or Diedrate is installed) hydrates.

The Steeping Jar sits anywhere, takes a few herbs and water, gets sealed, and produces cold tea after sixteen in-game hours. Cold teas cool and hydrate when Hydrate or Diedrate is installed.

Drink tea by pouring it into a cup, bowl, or bucket and right-clicking to sip.

The herbs and the teas

Every flower and mushroom that grows in a vanilla world. Heather, catmint, fly agaric, lily of the valley, mugwort, gold cap, edelweiss, mint. If you can pick it, you can brew it.

Each herb makes two teas, one hot from the kettle and one cold from the jar, each with its own effects.

There are also 20 themed compound brews unlocked by combining specific herbs: Hunter's Draught, Mountain Climber, Forest Spring, Moonlit Calm, Grit & Grain, and others. Hot compounds buff combat, mining, and ranged accuracy. Cold compounds heal, hydrate, and calm.

That works out to 156 distinct tea variants, each with its own colour, name, and effects.

What the teas do

Effects depend on the herb and the brewing mode. The possibilities:

  1. Hunger satisfaction
  2. Hydration (full HydrateOrDiedrate support if installed)
  3. Body temperature bump from hot teas
  4. Cooling effect from cold teas
  5. Temporal stability gain (from psychedelic teas)
  6. Psychedelic visions from mushroom teas
  7. Health damage from toxic herbs like deathcap and croton (you've been warned)
  8. Timed buffs to walk speed, mining speed, melee and ranged damage, max HP, and others on compound recipes

You can find a table with all the effects here.

Compatibility

HydrateOrDiedrate is fully integrated. Tea quenches thirst, cools you in hot biomes, and HoD's water variants work as brewing input (maybe, don't quote me on this).
Mycrodiversity: all mushrooms have teas and kombucha as of v0.6.1!
Material Needs: Flowers: Supports new flowers (adds a few new teas/allows the different variants/colors of vanilla flowers to be made into existing teas).

No known conflicts with anything else. Steep and Brew uses its own namespace and only patches its own recipes via conditional dependsOn rules.

Future Plans

More compound teas
More effects
Better balancing that takes a less sledgehammer approach
Integration with other mods (expanded foods when it's updated, Chemlib for some wild stuff, fermenting from other mods, alchemy, etc etc)
Far off, the ability to brew and create other drinks from different liquids (including alcohol)
Better textures and models
Unique plants (coffee, herbs, etc.)

Inspirations

Really love the Make Tea mod and its fork, but for my server really wanted a more simplified way to brew teas and a way to do them in bulk (love the aesthetic of barrels full of psychedelic teas)

Questions?

If you want to get my attention a little quicker, go ahead and reach out on the mod thread in the Vintage Story discord!

FAQ
Can you add suport for x?

I can try! I'm pretty new to modding, but if anyone has requests please let me know (also, always curious what sort of mods other people are running!)

Can you add x feature?

If it's a good idea, I can try! I'm all up for good ideas because I'm devoid of creativity.

Why?

This is mostly for a server for me and some pals, but I figured I'd share it to the wider world instead of packaging it in a single server tweaks file--basically worked backwards from maketea to try and make something a little simpler/easy to use. Also, not for nothing, but I think this idea has legs.

I hate x, y, z! Can you remove it?

Probably not, unless I really messed something up. Always willing to hear out balance changes (first mod, me bad make number good)

X model is ugly!

That's not a question, but it's true--I am the least art inclined person on the planet, if anyone wants to pass over a better shapeform, I'd be more than happy to integrate it.

AI Usage?

If the cover didn't give it away--yes, though not fully 'vibecoded' (not that that's a bad thing), mostly just used to organize my awful coding (I somehow make JSON files seem unorganized) and solve problems I was really stuck on. This obviously leads to all of the potential issues with far too complex code, poorly implemented features, etc. but I tried to clean all of that up to the best of my ability.

Can I take/fork this mod?

Sure! Fork, take, whatever to your heart's content--I'd prefer you let me know but honestly I'm not gonna stop you or complain about it.

The Kombucha (and Friends) update!

NEW: Added in Kambucha creation process.

To make Kambucha cook any tea + honey (or sugar if you have long term food) in a kettle (a little weird, but bear with me) to grow a reusable SCOBY culture. Seal the SCOBY with 1:10L of the same tea and seal the barrel for 14 days. Kombucha carries the tea's effects (minus warmth/cooling) at 1.5x and adds in +2 healing (it's good for your gut!) and will last twice as long. Kombucha also has a little bit of intoxication so becareful!

NEW: Liqueurs (experimental): three distilled drinks made in the steeping jar to hopefully add more uses for aqua vitae.

Steeping jars will now accept liquid poured from a container in the crafting grid alongside a solid ingredient. The three I've added are: yellow Chartreuse, green Chartreuse, and coffee liqueur. To make the Chartreuses (Chartreusi?) craft a Chartreuse herb bundle (see the handbook for the recipes, it's A LOT of flowers to grab), put it in a steeping jar filled with 10L of water and with .5L honey (or sugar with the long term food mod) and .5L of aqua vitae. Seal it and 48 hours later you'll have your Chartreuse. For coffee liqueur, same process but just add in 5 ground coffee instead of the herb bundles.
Note: This is an experimental feature and I'd really like everyone's opinion on it--this might need to just be a completely separate mod, but if everyone is fine with a tiny bit of bloat I plan to add quite a few more alcoholic drinks and the ability to make mixed drinks. Let me know your thoughts and what sort of alcoholics drinks/mixed drinks you'd like to see!

NEW: Licorice tea. Brewed from vanilla licorice root--works just like the other teas (thank you IRDP!)

Added in compatibility with long-term food, I'm planning more compatibility in the future--please let me know what mods you'd like to see integrated (really looking at DejFidOFF's Coffee and Tea because it's a way better implementation of coffee and has actual tea plants, but not sure what to do with my coffee plant if I do make a compat patch).

  • Added in coffee bushes (they use the new vanilla's bush logic) that will spawn in warmer climates (think around redwood forests).
  • To use coffee beans you need to roast them in a firepit then grind them in quern before using a 1:1 ratio to brew in a kettle/steep in a steeping jar.
  • Added in colloquial descriptions to each tea/drink to provide some reckoning of what each does.
  • Various small fixes including to steeping pot issues.
  • Should be fine to update on existing servers/games.
  • Next update plans: add in new plants (including actual tea plants), add in different compounds (for example, orange+black tea (new plant planned) to make Earl Grey), bug fixes, mod compats, etc.

This is a lovely mod 💚

How difficult would it be to turn shapes / blocks from other mods into working like a kettle? I'm thinking about the large pots and tea pots from Bricklayers, which currently are more or less just a different looking jug, but cannot be used to brew or cook.

@Tels: This is a lovely mod 💚How difficult would it be to turn shapes / blocks from other mods into working like a kettle? I'm thinking about the large pots and tea pots from Bricklayers, which currently are more or less just a different looking jug, but cannot

Here's the exact things, straight from the kettle's working JSONs:

Spoiler!

Both states (one blocktype file):
"variantgroups": [ { "code": "type", "states": ["fired", "cooked"] }, ...their color groups ],
"classByType": {
    "*-fired-*": "BlockKettleCooking",
    "*-cooked-*": "BlockKettleCooked"                                        //these two classes come from Steep and Brew's dll (class names are global in VS, no domain prefix, same way you use BlockLiquidContainerTopOpened from the survival dll), so they only resolve when it's installed
}
The group must literally be named type with states literally named fired/cooked, I swap states via CodeWithVariant("type", ...).

Fired-state attributes (via attributesByType on *-fired-*):
"mealContainer": true,
"mealBlockCode": "bricklayers:whatever",
"cookingContainerSlots": 4,
"maxContainerSlotStackSize": 6,
"servingCapacity": 6,
"maxTemperature": 200,
"tempGlowMode": 1,
"inFirePitProps": {
    "transform": { "rotation": { "y": 90 }, "scale": 0.75 },   // tune per shape
    "useFirepitModel": "Wide"
}

Cooked-state attributes (*-cooked-*):
"liquidContainerProps": {
    "capacityLitres": 1,
    "transferSizeLitres": 1,
    "allowHeldLiquidTransfer": true,
    "emptyShapeLoc": "bricklayers:block/clay/whatever",
    "opaqueContentShapeLoc": "game:shapes/block/basic/nothing",   // or their cup-contents shape if the liquid should show
    "liquidContentShapeLoc": "game:shapes/block/basic/nothing",
    "liquidMaxYTranslate": 0
}

Everything else is just your normal pot json, the only thing you'll have to fiddle with is the inFirePitProps transform until it sits right on the firepit (I hated doing this that's why I mention it, you probably have a better way of doing it, me small brain dumb when do graphic thing). I'd wait to do anything though, I'm working on something to make this a lot easier to do (need to patch a few spots that assume the kettle is literally named kettle-*, making it a bit easier to call to, etc.)--gonna try to get that out in a day or two if I get time

BULLFITE, 3 days ago

i'm seemingly unable to make hot teas at all -- 1 herb and 1l of water in the kettle does nothing, and the recipes for hot teas don't show up in the handbook either.

Zeorik, 6 days ago

Heya, just a heads up on a minor conflict with xSkills.

In the cooking skills, there's a skill to cook "more" at once. This typically is only for the cooking pot, but seems to also affect your Tea Kettle; However, the tea kettle seems to have an internal limit of 6 Liters. Attempting to cook 8 liters of tea using xSkills's increased capacity causes the cook time to loop, as the result of the recipe is too large for the kettle to support. Easy enough to work around once we learned that, but worth nothing as a potential issue or reference point if someone else says it's not working.

Zeorik, 5 days ago
@BlindCaesar: I don't normally play with xskills but should be an easy enough fix--I'm going to be doing a big bug/compatibility pass this weekend so I'll add xskills to the list!

Fair, it's admittedly the first time I've been using it myself. A player on my server wanted it though, and I've been dealing with the repercussions of adding it to the tail end of a modpack... as expected, there's a lot of things that turn out to cause problems with xSkills, lmao

Hi BlindCaesar, thanks very much for the mod. I'm just experimenting with coffee now, and found that the hot coffee recipe doesn't have any linkages to the kettle. It doesn't seem like a recipe exists currently to make it. Cold brew works fine, though. Thanks again and all the best!

Hot coffee works fine on my end in both SP and MP (with a ton of mods on our server)-I'd maybe try to reinstall the mod (and make sure you have the latest version) and make sure there's not another mod that adds coffee (all of the linkages are structured exactly the same as tea so not sure what could be broken unless tea as a whole doesn't work).

Aszek572, Jul 5th at 6:25 PM
@Op7B: It's been a few weeks since we brought this issue up. Have you found any fixes on your end? I've tried rolling back a release or two, but no fix here.

Hi all, yeah, I made a new SP world and reinstalled the mod with no luck. I couldn't find any error or warning messages in my logs after searching for "coffee" or the mod name. I have the MakeTea Forked mod, but it doesn't seem to overlap on coffee at all, and Expanded Foods only has Acorn Coffee, which goes a different route. Sorry, but I still have no recipe to work from.

Would a modlist help? I can also try doing a binary search to see if it's one mod removing it in particular.

I'll check logs and keep looking for links. If it helps, it isn't just coffee. It's anything hot that's brewed in the kettle. All cold brews work, but no hot. I should also note that the mod did work when I started the world, as I made black bottles to hold all my hot coffee. I can't be sure, but it feels like it stopped working after Expanded Foods broke their mod into components.

Aszek572, Jul 6th at 2:34 AM
@BlindCaesar: A modlist would help, I'm out of town for a few days for work, but if you send me a modlist either here or on discord I can check it out when I get back home.

Yes it is--the only issue right now is a visual glitch where the kettle will disappear after it finishes cooking (it's still there, just the model goes poof until you pick it up)

Raek, Jun 11th at 6:54 PM

Oh! A new thought for you-fruit teas.

It would require a flower or mushroom as the base, but you add the fruit as a bit of variety. Maybe its a way to add some extra satiety, if you like. Berries work too like this.

Sheotoriath, Jun 10th at 11:31 PM

I love making drinks and all sorts of things for my friends, so literally any kind of content addition and especially mixed drinks sounds amazing. I'm all for it

Newest update is wholy incompatible with "mycodiversity". Both this and mycodiversity work fine separately but cause crashing when both are enabled at the same time.

This kinda looks like either the players have the wrong version/the mod isn't loading at all on the client side (so it isn't a compatibility issue)--I'd delete and readd steep and brew from your server and have players delete the mod from their %appdata%\Roaming\VintageStoryData\ModsbyServer (and \Mods just in-case). If that doesn't work, I'd have to see the client and server logs to see what's happening.

Mycodiversity compat, hell yeah

Really, just wanted to say I'm glad about that.

Oh! I'll happily experiment and tell you how it works! I personall find the option fitting. I mean. If you're going to steep and brew tea I'd say it's reasonable that you can at least brew some alcohols.

I'll let you know if there's any oddities when I have the chance, currently a little busy with work.

Ralh, Jun 7th at 7:29 PM

Hello! I love your mod! I've used it and reccomended it to others ever since I've discovered it. I really, really like the HydrateorDiedrate compatibility.

Having said that, like others have mentioned, I believe keeping alcohol distilling seperate would be idea for most of us. I would absolutely download it as a seperate mod but what you have going here is lightwieght and easy to toss into a modlist.

ReaH424, Jun 7th at 6:53 PM

Personally, I think it would be better to separate alcohol-related features into a separate mod or add-on. When I installed this mod, I liked that it made it easy to make tea, and I didn’t plan on installing a mod to add alcohol.

P.S. I didn’t realize it, but coffee has been added. You should update the mod’s settings page :D

IRDP, Jun 7th at 4:42 PM

Heyo!

This is probably my favourite tea mod out there, really like the simplicity and variety!

Have you considered adding licorice tea, since that's a vanilla plant now? Currently it's only used for bait, and people do make tea out of licorice root.

IRDP, Jun 7th at 6:37 PM
@BlindCaesar: Added in the newest update!

Thank you!

That was quite fast turnaround, though I imagine only coincidentally.

I like the look of the new features, even if the alcohol ends up split as a separate mod.

BlindCaesar , Jun 6th at 4:42 AM

Added in a table with all of the effects. You can find it in the description or here.

Fleurdelynx, May 30th at 12:25 PM

Would also love to see a list of effects if possible. (P.S. love the new screenshot thumbnail)

TheWizardSoL, May 25th at 9:14 AM

Hiya! Would it be possible to get a list of all the things the different teas do? For example I made the golden poppy tea and all it said was "you begind to feel strange" but there's no visual effect or anything that I've noticed. So a list of all the effects would be nice <3

This is not working for me .. 1l of water and 1 woad flower does nothing.. just sits there not cooking in a kettle even though it says it will cook 1l of hot woad tea.

mayonnaise, May 11th at 10:39 PM

i'm using Immersive Body Temperature and the advertised "cooling effect" of cold tea doesn't seem to be actually cooling me down; how do you actually implement the cooling effect on your side?

teosnotsmart, May 11th at 6:14 PM

Hi!
The current mod version crashes when trying to pour any liquid from the kettle into a bottle from A Culinary Artillery!
Cool mod tho

It's my understanding that you actually shouldn't have been able to pour into those bottle when they're in ground storage--made it so you can't pour from the kettle into those (and other similar modded objects) so at the very least it won't crash anymore when you try.

Malfiros, May 7th at 4:00 AM

Absolutely agree with Divico - a description of what each tea's effect does would be really helpful. I have no idea what "Druid's Awakening" is supposed to do while "Bowman's Tonic" gives me at least some idea. "Diviner's Cup?" Not a clue.

Added in a description--I don't give exact numbers but more an idea of what something does (on my server folks did not want exact numbers and wanted to focus more on vibes)!

Divico, May 3rd at 4:30 PM

Hey, love the mod so far! I realy like the idea of "alchemy light" with complex herbal teas or infusions. Though I feel like there could be a clearer discription of what each brew does, even if its just some flavour text. Thank you for your work

Raek, May 3rd at 6:31 AM

Hmm. I like this mod so far!

An interesting thought occurs. If one wants the extra steps, what about making Kombucha (a drink made from fermenting tea) that can restore health like a tonic alongside the other effects? I'd say putting tea in a barrel with some honey for an in-game 14 days would do for a little simplicity, or a month if you're wanting it to be harder to get. Slow expiration, but it'd make it great for multiplayer where the group can open the barrel and grab a few jugs for their trip.

This is a great idea--right now I'm working on how to mix liquids and create alcohols (was planning to add herb bundles and herbal liquers like Chartreuse)--I'll add it to the list!

What's funny is kombucha is very lightly alcoholic due the fermentation process-think of it as like a 'zima' or somesuch, you'd have to drink an absurd amount. Stuff can last for years IRL if you keep it in a cool place, so it might be useful.

There's even a drink made from fermented milk, apparently, but I don't think that would qualify as a 'tea'..oh, right! It's called Kefir! It's rather thick, maybe it can serve as a saturation drink if one's on the go-would give more options than just making milk into cheese before it expires. In this case it'd require putting a fermenting agent into it, and I think the kombucha would suffice. It might lose the healing perk, but it's a quick, light food one can have while around the base.

Another thought is that maybe you can make the drinks sealeable in crocks so that you can extend their shelf life?

Darmin404, May 2nd at 11:51 PM

Hi! I've tried the mod, but seems like there is no spoilage rate from either the teas? It is planned to add it? Thank you

ReaH424, May 2nd at 5:35 PM

I tested the mod, but after brewing the tea, I can't pour the tea from the kettle into a bowl. Also, the steeping jar isn't aligned with the blocks.

You have to place the kettle down and then right click it (like a cooking pot)--I've been working on getting it to work like you'd expect but it's a little tricky, hopefully I'll have something the next update. For the steeping jar, I'll try to get that fixed in the next update.

Love this mod, Just reporting a bug!

When i made a tea,and put the hot kettle back into a fire, I could no longer add anything to the hot kettle, the slots did not show up

BlindCaesar , May 1st at 1:15 PM

New version (v0.2.0):

Changelog

  • Added in support for boiling water when using HoD patch (ty SeniLiX!)
  • Updated handbook recipes to show 'In Kettle' and 'In Steeping Pot' rather than 'In Cooking Pot' and 'In Barrel'
  • Added in version number to file name (ty Tels!)

Tels, May 1st at 12:10 PM (modified May 1st at 12:11 PM)

This mod sounds fantastic and I can't wait to try it with bricklayer's mugs and cups and tea pots 💚 Could you please add the version number to the archive like steepandbrew_0.1.0.zip so it's easier to see which version one has? Thank you!

Fefa, May 1st at 10:40 AM

theres no problem if i use both, make thea and this mod? or they will have conflict ?

BlindCaesar , May 1st at 12:11 PM

You can absolutely use both; however, they create different teas and such.

In conjunction to what Butah said; I'd love some form of compatibility with Make Tea. It would complete this mod IMO. That and as SeniLiX says, making boiled water for Hydrate or Diedrate would be brilliant too~

While this will work fine alongside Make Tea, setting up the teas to work in the same fashion/with Make Teas teapot is a bit out of my wheelhouse.

ButahBabter, May 1st at 9:28 AM

This looks already more refined than the "Make Tea" mod, no offence to the author obv, but im liking where this is going ^.^ well done!

My own suggestion for this would be:

Colored kettles and ajrs

COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE
Metal kettles with the whistling cap?
Porcelain Tea Kits

I'd love to add in coffee and it's a longterm goal--just need to learn how plants work and find someway to model them so it isn't the ugliest thing created by man.

For metal kettles--stay tuned :)

El_Neuman, May 1st at 8:35 AM

Omg, that's so wonderfull, i already love this mod!)))

SeniLiX, May 1st at 8:25 AM

Is it possible to simply boil water with the kettle for the purpose of getting "clean" water for HoD?

GraveRob, May 1st at 8:15 AM

my partner is gonna freak when i tell them about this

Snowfall94, May 1st at 6:34 AM

This is a nice and quite simple way for tea. I liked the make tea mod too but I didn't really like how it functioned overall, still refused to remove it though. Gonna try this one out

Thanks for the mod
