This mod adds aluminum to the game, following what MAY have MAYBE been a historical process that MAY have been possible (According to about 50 different wikipedia links, some chemistry nerds, and some metallurgy nerds).
Following Vintage Story tradition, we hoped to represent the first historical method of creating aluminum. This isn't quite possible because the original method (the Wöhler method) requires metallic potassium, which as far as we could tell is not obtainable without electrolysis. Instead the mod follows the Deville process. This more or less amounts to substituting potassium for sodium, which is much easier to produce. In theory, every step of the crafting process is possible in real life! The mod of course abstracts away a lot of the finer details, and handles most of the byproducts for you.
In game, aluminum is treated the same as gold/silver are (that being they have weak armor and tools, can line lanterns, and have ornate spears, arrows, and falxes). Though since aluminum is a notoriously lightweight metal, the debuffs from the chain and plate armor have been halved. Unlike gold and silver however, aluminum is not found as an ore (unless you're very lucky, as it is VERY rare!), but instead it is created through a chain of crafting, cooking, and washing to extract it from bauxite.
Our general thought process for what to do with it was this: If gold can do it, aluminum can too (aside from obvious gold-specific stuff like electrum). For numeric values, durability and strength is 10% less than copper, but not less than gold.
We've also added aluminum bronze - an alternative to meteoric iron with slightly higher stats but much lower durability. It is made from 8-12% aluminum and 88-92% copper.
To help guide you through the process, a handbook entry for making aluminum has been provided: "Mod Mechanic: Aluminum Making"
Good luck, and we're sorry! :]
(If this process is wrong, please tell us! We're not joking about our sources being wikipedia and a few nerds)
No AI was used in the creation of this mod, we suffered for this.
-
Aluminum: A lightweight metal used mostly for decorative purposes, such as lining lanterns.
- Tools have very low durability and are generally between copper and gold.
- Armor is about as good as gold, but the downsides are only 1/2 as severe as usual!
-
Native aluminum ore: A *VERY RARE* ore that can be used to bypass this whole process.
-
Aluminum bronze: A strong alloy between aluminum and copper.
- Strengths are between meteoric iron and steel.
- Durability is between black bronze and iron.
-
Misc. Items used for making aluminum:
-
Saltwort: A crop found on ocean shores used for soda ash
-
Sodium: a soft metal required for aluminum—when used responsibly
-
Red mud: A byproduct of refining aluminum. Used to make your own red clay, or to make massive industrial waste dumps with!
-
Caustic soda, Bauxite slurry, Sodium aluminate, Alumina, Hydrochloric acid, Pyrolusite, Chlorine gas, Aluminum chloride, Aluminum powder (with salt): Various ingredients that need to be found or crafted to make aluminum from bauxite.
-
- Handbook stuff:
- Bauxite slurry should show what recipes it's in.
- Lanterns should have a crafting recipe with aluminum linings in the recipe instead of being in-world only.
- Compatibility with other mods:
- Combat Overhaul: Armory (Unsure about this one, since vanilla combat is being changed in 1.23 anyway, and CO is still on 1.21) - Weapons, armor, and shields
- Ithania Canned Goods - Aluminum cans serving as an alternative to steel cans.
- Boric Alchemy - Making both mods use the same aluminum.
- Possible 2nd mod adding more stuff?
- For any feature that aluminum would be nice to have, but we feel is out of scope for this mod.
- Fixing inconsistancies
- Chlorine Gas should not be treated as a liquid, but treating it as a liquid (for now) was far easier than adding an entire gas handling system.
- We probably got something wrong somewhere, which should be fixed.
Mods that we made Silly Aluminum compatable with:
- Metal Cooking Pots - Aluminum & Aluminum Bronze cooking pots and cans.
Mods that have other authors have made compatable with Silly Aluminum:
- War Scythe
These are a bit harder to track down, please let us know if we're missing any!

Awesome mod! But is it to possible add compat to this mod? I would really like to play it together
https://mods.vintagestory.at/improvedmetallurgy
Would it be possible to add compat with this mod?
https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/63882
The recipe graph is a delight though I've a concern to ask.
How do we collect/store/use Chlorine Gas? I assume it isn't handled like a fluid in a bucket or as a solid to hold but I can't think of an alternative.
Currently it is in fact a fluid in a bucket.. Hopefully we can change it eventually, we just weren't sure how to handle it either.
This is the mod that I have been thinking about for months! Although, I have some conflicts about the realism for the strength behind the alloy composition. Before, I was thinking of a mod that adds aluminum 7075, which in the best temper, is as strong as iron in terms of ultimate yield strength. And that's assuming 5-6% zinc, 2-3% magnesium, 1-2% copper, and BAL aluminum, which excludes other elements that aren't vanilla to the game and are <1%. So to think that an alloy of only 88% copper and 12% aluminum is stronger than what I listed earlier is something that I can't agree with. Anyway, thanks for reading. I will just download the mod and edit the json files to nerf the stats.
Also I really like the green for the aluminum armor!
Thanks for trying the mod! You probably are right regarding aluminum bronze. From a gameplay perspective we just felt that if it was weaker than iron there wouldn't be any reason to consider making it. I do think that (though I don't actually know much about this!) with other additives aluminum bronze is somewhat comparable to iron, so my weak argument is that like in other areas of the game we're allowing the earliest (and worst) way to make something to magically produce a better version. I would be interested in the mod you're describing!
One thing we could do is try and adjust the recipe to more closely match real life? There's no way to add iron to alloys since it can't be melted in a crucible, but we could add nickel and zinc.
Yeah I understand. An alloy that can only be reached end game but can only be weaker than steel becomes something worthless except to show off how much free time you have in a server.
Also, I had misremembered my research. Aluminum bronze is stronger than aluminum 7075, but it is not lightweight. If you want both lightweight and strength, then you choose the more expensive 7075 (or 6061), and these two are far beyond what is friendly to a medieval roleplay server.
So, basically, aluminum bronze can be as strong as iron/steel, but the armor will still slow you down. As for making the composition more realistic, just include zinc. Nickel is not a main component for strength.
here is another fact: realistically the steel you make in the game would be realistically weak, and so the aluminum bronze that you have made will outperform the steel from the cementation furnace. The game makes you skip a process where you repeatedly flatten and fold blister steel over and over, otherwise only the surface of has carbon while the inside is still iron. Then even after folding, the steel is still weak as some parts have too much carbon and other spots have too little.
And to add on, aluminum bronze has a density of around 7.4 grams per cm^3. For reference, iron has a density of 7.5 g. The 7075 that I mentioned has a density of under 3 grams per. The movement speed on the aluminum bronze armor would have to be nerfed to keep the realism, but on the other hand you can go along with the logic I presented by having aluminum bronze be as stronger than vanilla steel. It fits for a gameplay model (more complicated process -> stronger material), but I can't assure you that you can convince the community to believe that vanilla cementaiton furnace steel is weaker than an aluminum alloy.
ooh! very cool!
I absoluetely adore your recipe graph!
A couple suggestions, Alum should be able to be used as a starting point for making aluminum as it is "usually" a salt of aluminum. I'd also love to see compatablity with Boric alchemy https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/33010 aluminum and sodium as I'd love to use both mods together.
Apparently, it is possible to make potassium without electrolysis, although it needs lithium for the reaction (since it is very reactive), which isn't exactly common. (Although, how complex would a bit of Spodumene ore or lithium-containing brine be anyway?)
Woah, that's really cool! Adding a new ore definitely would be a bit of work, and if we keep adding more metals we might have to rename the mod ._.
but being able to do the original potassium-based reaction ingame would be very neat :o
This mod sadly crashed my game after looking at the anvil...
Should be fixed! Try downloading the newest version and see if you're still having problems
I would love to see either as part of this mod or as a separate patch, compatibility with Combat Overhaul for the armor please!
I already have an aluminum mod but if I didn't I would use this
dope mod
Hey this mod is awesome! Aluminum doesn't have many uses in game so I have a few suggestions! I know it's not feasible to do all or even most of these, I'm just spitballing. I ordered them by my favourites lol. I would love to see some of these eventually but no problem if not! If you need any help with item models or textures add me on discord! It's frogsy
Features:
Melt down aluminum anything (infinite recyclability)
Aluminum grill! Cast via mold, grill used over campfires for a bonus! Perhaps it adds more slots to a campfire and lets you cook multiple items at the same time? And maybe a bigger grill item that needs a fire underneath it. Put in your kitchen for large-scale grilling needs!
Alum making process! (hydrated double sulfate salt of aluminium) Ideas for usage:
Aluminum foil (wrap food and bake it, fish, potatos, etc. for satiety bonus. Wrap cooked food or raw food like fish to lower spoilage time in your inventory?)
Thermite (powdered rust)
Aluminum plates/utensils/cups/cookware
Aluminum beer keg
Window frames/replacement for lead
Mirror
Aluminum animal cage with bait
Aluminum printing block! Via acid etching
Compatibility:
Aluminum cans with Ithania Canned Goods.
If Alum is added, alum can be used in pickling/canning to improve taste/texture.. and satiety?
(silly idea: you can throw cans in the mod, why not make aluminum cans do less damage than steel cans?)
Aluminum versions of Metal Cooking Pots!
Compat with Boric Alchemy's aluminum. Make them the same item in game if both are installed so their features work on both!
Thank you so much! The recycling is so obvious I'm not sure how we didn't think of it. O_O
I'm not too sure how I feel about adding things like aluminum foil? Part of the idea behind the mod was to try and imagine aluminum in the time period of the game (that's why we worked so hard to avoid adding electrolysis), and something about aluminum foil just doesn't feel at home to me in the setting. We were thinking about making an "extras" mod with some other ideas we had that didn't really fit, maybe it would work better there?
I like the idea of adding cookware though! It would be pretty hard to obtain, so part of me feels like it should be worth the effort in some way, but it would also just be cool to have aluminum bowls :]
I also looked into the alum making process and it wouldn't be too hard to add! We'd just need to add a couple more powders (so many powders in this mod...). I do wonder if there would be any point to it though. Alum can already be found naturally, and I feel like getting it that way is a lot less work than going through the entire aluminum process.
I also have absolutely no clue how to go about mod compatibility... Even getting the game to register our aluminum metal was really difficult, and I'm not sure how we would be able to substitute it for someone else's.
I agree on the aluminum foil now that I think about it. It only became widely used in the first place because the process for making aluminum got much, much cheaper. And you could achieve the same result (wrapping your food) with paper if you really wanted to. An extras mod would be great for the oddball ideas though.
The way I think about it, you need to give the player a reason to engage with the mod. With cookware there's only downsides because of how hard it is to make, so not many at all will. I can see the social aspect though, Napolean served his honored guests with aluminum plates, and the less favored ones with gold plates to show his wealth.
Maybe in terms of pots, it would cook food a % faster than others? Thus saving fuel and time, since aluminum is great at dispersing heat. For bowls, they would get hot faster and stay hot longer, decreasing spoil time and perhaps even providing a "hot meal" buff, which could lower the rate your satiety runs out or something else. (and yeah food right of the oven is hot too and would realistically provide you with that same buff, but it needs to be that way to give a reason for the player to want these bowls, giving the buff to other things would just make it redundant)
Both could be a good option, giving the player the option of producing it should they ever need large amounts, and it being able to be found in the world. This gives the player the choice, and directly adds game progression, as when you enter a more advanced age you wouldn't have to scour the area for alum.
I'm not really sure either. My best guess at this point would be for someone to make a cross compatibility patch, renaming boric alchemy's aluminum to aluminum alloy or something so they are distinct and separate (I know its not an alloy it just needs any different name).
Thanks for playing our mod, and thanks for the suggestions!
Our origional goal was for aluminum to basically be bragging rights, and a "I only made this because I could make this" kinda thing, but we're looking at giving it some actual use, either here if it fits, or in an "extras" mod if we feel it's a bit too much.
This mod may try to keep aluminum a tiny bit useless for any real practical reason, since around this time period the only use we could find was Napolean using it for some dishware, and people below them got gold dishware instead.
But going down your list, here's what I think of these and what we could do for them
(Note I've never made a compatability anything so I'm not sure how to do those yet!)
Hey thank you for getting back to me so fast! I'm really excited to see what happens. I had some ideas about aluminum cookware specifically in another comment in case you missed it.
Thank you guys so much for your hard work. Are you in contact with the mod developers on the discord? I'm sure they could help point you in the right direction if you don't know how to do something
Incredibly convoluted and extremely cool. Thank you.
It'd be really funny if the flaming sodium bits produced after thorwing a sodium ingot into water set stuff on fire for a short time. Could make it a proper fire weapon (albeit niche) in that case.
this is peak aluminum Bronze pls i know its pointless but it would be funny
We're thinking of it, just not sure how to add it
-Part of this mod
-A separate mod, using this as a dependancy
-A part of a larger mod that does stuff with aluminum, using this as a dependancy
I also support adding aluminum bronze in some form! It could be a sidegrade to iron or meteoric iron, apparently it's quite strong.
Our current plan is to have it have higher mining speed than meteoric iron with the same mining tier, but lower durability than normal iron.
QuakerOatz MarterKlavee
Just added it with 1.1.0!
It has stats between meteoric iron and steel, but durability is between iron and black bronze.
Aluminum Knights!!
