🚨 DISCLAIMER 🚨

This mod was made with the help of AI (Claude Code).
I hope you'll give it a try anyway. If that's not for you, no hard feelings.

Flying Machine!

This mod adds a homebuilt, wood-and-linen biplane inspired by the flying machines of the early 1900s. It's rickety, loud, and held together with glue, rope and hope.

When can I build it?

Mid game to early late game. You'll need iron (or meteoric iron/steel) for the engine parts, plus flax/linen, copper, lead, sulfur, resin or beeswax, rendered fat, glue, rusty gears and a good pile of planks. Every component has its own recipe: grid, anvil smithing, or both. A full guide is in the in-game handbook (search "Flying Machine").

Building it

Craft a set of trestles and place them on flat ground with room to spare (9×9 and 5 blocks of open air). Then add the parts step by step, the same way you'd build a vanilla sailboat: frame, wheels, wings, engine, propeller, instrument panel, seats. Finally, roll it out.

Fuel
The engine runs on Aqua Vitae (double-distilled spirits). Right-click the engine with a bucket, jug or bottle to open the fuel window. The tank holds 10 litres and burns about 1 litre per minute at full throttle, which is roughly 12 000 blocks per tank. Run dry and you glide, so plan your landings.

Features

  • Simple flight model: throttle, pitch, banking turns, stalls, a takeoff run and landings
  • Working instrument panel: airspeed, altimeter, compass, fuel gauge, variometer, plus stall and low-fuel lamps
  • Pilot and passenger seat, and a cargo slot for a chest or basket
  • Engine sounds, exhaust smoke, spinning propeller and wheels
  • Disassemble it with a wrench (hold Shift + right-click) to get your parts back, then rebuild it somewhere else
  • Only the builder (or players with access to the land claim) can take it apart
  • You can't jump out in mid-air, at least not without ground close below you

Controls
W/S = throttle · Space = nose up · Ctrl = nose down · A/D = turn · Shift = get out (on the ground)

Multiplayer
Tested on a local dedicated server. It hasn't been tested on servers with real-world ping yet, so please report rubber-banding or other issues.

Support
I don't want your money. But if you enjoyed the mod, please consider donating to Animals Asia (animalsasia.org). Yes, VS bears are the worst. Real bears in bile farms have it worse, and Animals Asia rescues them.

Hey I absolutely love this mod and even made a runway with lights and a hanger while gathering resources to make the plane.

The one bug I ran into was while flying and turning from a mountain that loaded in front of me, the plane dissapeared yet my velocity and heading stuck and I couldnt move or steer. Besides this I can't give enough praise on making it feel like something grounded flying mcahine wise.

On one hand, very impressive. On the other hand, no loop-de-loops?

You might consider adding the "Source" link to the top (click edit on the mod, there is a field for it) :)

I made some contributions on GitHub, FYI

Hi Granlurken, this mod looks awesome and has a lot of potential! Just a suggestion, but have you considered adding different variants of planes? IE more expensive models with better speeds or higher ceilings or more storage slots? I am working on adding an aluminum production process to Improved Metallurgy and a couple of aluminum alloys with the idea that they might be useful to your mod.

Also, a more pertient suggestion, but would it be possible to add some sort of braking system when landing? As it stands landing requires a ridiculous amount of space compared to takeoff.

Best of luck and fantastic mod!

Played around with this and it's super impressive! I'd love to see damage when crashing/landing too hard!

I'm thinking make so it if you "crash" the plane takes damage, and damage means you have to use say, rusty gears and a wrench, to repair it.

I also think we should encourage the building of airstrips/runways, so I think a little bit of damage should be done when landing on dirt/grass/sand/gravel.

Any way you can add compatibility for https://mods.vintagestory.at/hexsmech
They have oil and petrochemicals in that mod
