Liber Terra makes Vintage Story's old books into a library you can actually read. It adds 84 historical works from antiquity through the late medieval period, split into 563 readable volumes sourced from public-domain Project Gutenberg editions. + Tons of QoL for organizing and collecting books.
Find them in ruins and bony soil, browse every volume in the creative inventory, stack books on the floor in eight layouts, carry an armful, or throw one when literary criticism becomes physical. Requires Vintage Story 1.22.x.
✓ Documentation, source, and feedback
See the player documentation for the full catalog and commands, or visit the repository and issue tracker. Contributions, corrections, translations, and screenshots are welcome.
What is new
📖 v0.6.0 — READ A BOOK
Every modeled book in the Resonance Archives is now a real book you can take and read. That includes the floor piles, stacks, and rows, plus the books in intact, ruined, and lore bookshelves. Right-click to take one, or Ctrl + right-click to take several.
This goes beyond Resonance Archives, almost all vanilla clutter bookshelves can have book extracted from it. That includes Better Ruins and other ruins.
As a shelf empties, its remaining books keep the exact leaning, stacked, and shelved poses the ruin designers gave them. The displays are filled with distinct readable volumes — mostly Liber Terra books, with occasional vanilla lore — and a lore shelf still gives its specially marked discovery book first.
Not yet: vanilla's separate large-book props — open, closed, standing, piled, lectern, and very-large bookstand variants — were not converted in v0.6.0. They remain decorative, so their books still cannot be taken.
📚 v0.5.0 — nine works, 53 new volumes
The library now reaches farther across the ancient and medieval world:
- Classical Latin: Roman Farm Management: The Treatises of Cato and Varro.
- Classical Greek: Sophocles' Oedipus trilogy and Antigone, plus The Argonautica.
- Medieval Arabic: The Awakening of the Soul by Ibn Tufayl.
- Old English collection: Game and Playe of the Chesse.
- Ancient Sanskrit: Sakoontala by Kālidāsa.
- Ancient Irish: Táin Bó Cúalnge, translated by Joseph Dunn.
- Medieval Italian: Longfellow's Divine Comedy and La Vita Nuova.
This expansion was suggested by @Kynorr.

Has anyone made a library ruin ? if so let me know i might add it to the mod because why not!
I used the command to disable throwing, the game crashes when it still tries to throw the book.
i cant reproduce, can you send me the crash, client logs etc
https://pastebin.com/KBJFD23q here you go, I made a pastebin. While I do play modded, I tested the mod on its own and yes, it still crashes after winding up a throw even after disabling it.
found it, forgot to enable the config was trying to do implemetn too fast. sorry
patch release RuinousLibrarian
absolutely BASED dev who responds to bugs and fixes them asap. Kudos to thee, good modder!
I think I mentioned this on another mod (bookbinders, I think) but I realized it would make just as much sense to ask here - is it possible we could get a way to rebind or copy the books from this mod, so we can produce more/create versions that haven't rotted or aged? I like the idea of creating a kind of monastic scriptorium, devoted to seeking and preserving old knowledge.
if it is not possible then it is a bug. let me know
Oh! I didn't know you could rebind books! I'll look into that!
How does one do it?
Ink_and_quill
Plato: The Republic books don't get added to the journal, but other books do
will check out this now, and the one below
loretype-kinghorn-vol10 is a bunch of gibberish. I think it's a glossary or something, but it's very strange
Seem the book is a translation and also includes the original old english too, which has quiet a few encoded characters. Let me think about this... if you have some suggestion let me know.
nvm no english translation. just notes with middle english
i will keep it for now, just for flavour. but indifference.
Remember that feeling when you first went into the resonance archive and wish you could read all its books !? Well now you can! with the latest vesion of this mod!
We convert all clutter bookshelves with actual books.
I still need help with translation and more book choices, but there should be 500+ volumes. outside of the official lore and br lore.
Also make sure to thank Kynorr for the book recommendations, its been fun reading some books I never got to read.
I am still planning something for the large books, prob turn them into encyclopedias and/or atlas. The old folks here know what i am talking about! Feedback welcome.
Idea for the large books, there are tons of like old maps and you could even do sea charts
Please add a config to disable the book throwing, I think I cant read certain books, my arm just starts winding up ready to throw it away, some of these books are just evil to me for some reason ❤️
😆I think this is a book weapon mod first now, content second sorry /jk
Thats a great idea, will add the config.
sickofmike Can you confirm this issue was in the latest version ?
Will test it out!
let me know, i foudn other bugs in the mean time.
and fix it in recent pushes
I'm also getting this bug! Tapping right-click causes almost all books to be thrown alongside reading them (version 0.6.7) It also gives me a big lagspike whenever I right click with a book
I've also got this exact problem, same mod version (game version 1.22.6), big lag spike when opening the book, book gets thrown and read/opened
Please! add a config to disable the throwing!
will do. Thanks, thought i had fixed it. btw thanks for the additional info the lag spike (fps drop right ?) belive it is already in the config, but wiill check
I don't see the config anywhere. Has that update come yet?
Yes, FPS drop, I wasn't aware there was a config, I don't have a file in the ModConfig folder or in the config menu in game
fixed a race condition between client/server so it was a new bug.
Sorry still new to game development expecially multiplayer so still learning the best patterns,
So there was another issue fixed, notheless, i still added the following commands
` /liberterra throwing [on|off]` and `/liberterra windup [seconds] `(controlserver), both persist and re-broadcast.
and yes config setting was missing. ❤️ will be out soon today.
Payl_Ache KermAtMeBro sickofmike out!
Would you be interested in suggestions for Gutenberg books to add if we include the eBook number and/or a justification for its presence?
I'd do it myself, but aside from tentatively changing numbers in .json files via Notepad, my capacity to program is nil. >.<
❤️ Thanks You! If you file an issue in the issue tracker above, there is an option for enhancement/feature, it uses a form to fill it in so pretty straight forward.
If you hate gihub/microsoft or you the only login you have is vintage story and/or a pigeon nest. you can just post the list or link to a list here, I will be sure to attribute your contribution accordingly!!!
btw all the works are here https://github.com/lalmei/liber-terra/blob/98c64b26413b1de5c906cda6f4efcc1dac8595af/tools/mvp_works.py
which is just a list of several entries in `json` format
{
"id": 981,
"code": "beowulf",
"title": "Beowulf",
"group": "oldenglish",
"filename": "Beowulf_Modern_English_Gummere.txt",
}
the id is the Gutenberg id for the text, the only thing we need, along with the names we want to use in the game.
most books in Gutenberg are "https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/{id}.txt.utf-8"
if you find one that is not it, also let me. know.
The group is just a custom group I made to keep track of which book we have in each culture so we can keep ourselves accountable to the western/location bias, and where we need to fill/fix.
I have a python tool to pull the text and cut it up into volumes and wrap the text to the correct width in vintage story. It then inserts in en.json so We can have multiple lists in different languages.
So it is easy to fix if we have updates in the game that change how the text is rendered later, or we decide to create our own "book" views, or some other mod does it better. We can make sure it is compatible.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a Github account, so since it’s okay I’ll put them here. I’ve tried to follow the table format in the Readme (minus the volumes since I can’t do that wizardry), but please check my work and of course feel free to reject/edit anything!
See below the table for general explanations.

Medieval Italian
La Comedia/The Comedy/The Divine Comedy
Dante Alighieri
Translated by Henry Longfellow
Divinecomedy
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1004
Obviously an incredibly religious text, but it’s a personal favorite of mine and it’s not sacred, just incredibly fascinating and brilliant.
There are several English translations available on Gutenberg; I’ve just put Longfellow’s down here.
Medieval Italian
La Vita Nuova
Dante Alighieri
Lavitanuova
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/41085
The second most popular of Dante’s works and contains elements that Dante perfects in La Comedia.
General guidelines I set for myself:
Setting: Vaguely European late medieval-Renaissance era with indications of (past?) more advanced civilizations with no direct Earth equivalent; current literary technology limited to individual binding of books/scrolls. I’m more willing to go past the 1300s line if I think it’s worth it (Dante. Dante is worth it).
Mod purpose: Access to classical literature in the English language
Justifiable things:
Modern/late English translations/writings of earlier works – For this mod, we’re already accepting that the language VS society/ies wrote/spoke in is modern English, so rejecting a work from the 10th century because it was only “discovered” by Europeans centuries later seems silly to me, especially since English wasn’t the lingua franca until the modern period. Less easy to justify within the vibes of this mod is New World/Oceania works, even if they were created in the right era; can be included to broaden the users’ concept of what makes a work a “classic”. I steered clear of them for now.
Things to avoid:
Most religious texts – Any references to real world religious figures or events, theological concepts, and ethical standards derived from religious views would be nearly impossible to avoid, so that’s not the goal. The goal is to strike a balance between accessing classics and understanding that VS, the game, exists in a multifaith world, and the presentation – and therefore selection – of texts that are/were considered sacred could send a message of exclusion to users. Works that center upon mythology/religion but aren’t a source of worship can be justified from a literary/historical context, and works from non-European sources that are classics in their cultures can have more leeway to combat Eurocentrism.
Cookbooks/guidebooks for crafts – While it’d probably be hard to argue a modder is liable for actions taken by mod users related to mod contents – for example, a medieval cookbook that contained ingredients/methods now known to be hazardous – from an ethical standpoint, it’d probably be best to avoid such texts. If describing processes/methods that would seem to be outside the general users’ ability to accidentally or erroneously follow – a guidebook on steel-making, for example – then it would not be ethically different from reading a Wikipedia article. Texts about scientific subjects that are outdated to a modern reader – Ptolomy’s geocentric model, for example – can have value from a history of science/human reasoning standpoint. Newton’s Principia being 1500+ pages is the only reason I cut it from the list.
Anything...saucy. Ahem. That’s what Ao3 is for.
Anything that’s over 600 pages or more compiler/translator commentary than original text – Plato’s Republic is 500+ pages, so I think that’s a good benchmark for the upper limit on size. Unfortunately, this knocks off many epics (and especially Indian ones) and the Travels of Marco Polo. Also compilations of ancient sources that have more modern additions – so no Aladdin, which kicks out The Thousand And One Nights. Also I couldn’t find a commentary-less version of Gilgamesh?? On Project Gutenberg?? It’s the OLDEST story in the world??
I'm going to cry if the formatting explodes when I post this, which is how I know I need to go to bed.
❤️. I know i hate the tiny editor, they should just have markdown.
i might also the ancient greek poem Work and Days, goes well with cato's and varro's almanac's. I need to figure out way to tie it with my other mod for astronomy.
Kynorr done
I panned up the Liber Terra: Random Library Book on a server, how do I use it? When I right-click it asks me to adjust the chance for loot to appear
thats is odd. I will look it. are you using the latest version ?
We are using the initial version but we can update it
yea i verified it is a bug in a older version, Do update it, not present at least wasnt able to reproduce it. so let me know if it is persistent. I only got a mac to test it.
the good news either way you got tons of neat features!!!
Books themselves
Handling books
Throwing — tap use to read; hold use ~1 second then release to lob it like a stone. Thrown books always drop on impact, so a volume is never destroyed. (Throwing books)
Floor piles — sneak + right-click a book onto the ground to start a pile, up to 16 mixed volumes per block; empty-hand right-click takes from the top, Ctrl moves several. Press F while holding a book to toggle Messy ↔ Neat layout. Covers render from the real books. (Book piles)
Carried stacks — "the pizza boxes" — drag two lore books together to form a held stack of up to 3, carried flat on the hand. Tap reads the top book, hold throws it, Q soft-tosses it, and sneak-use lays the top book straight onto a floor pile (or unstacks one back to inventory) — so a handful becomes a pile without round-tripping through your inventory.
Bonus: any other mod's book that follows the vanilla
book-*/lore-book-*naming automatically piles and stacks too, since the mod matches on code pathAwesome, thank you! Seems like a sick update
amazing mod, i love books... but uhh, I cant really read em due to the throwing thingy lol. Maybe make that configurable or smth?
throwing should be based on holding right click, but a quick right click should open the book automatically, at least in my it did, i will double check, also make sure you have only one book in hand.
Yeah, i quickly right click, it opens the book like half the time, but it also throws it all the time too lol
ok will put a fix soon, mightl do a breaking change, and use left click to throw. Might be the best option in this case.
pushing a fix soon, i will increase the timing, lets see if that small fix works for you rather than break backwards compatibility. I will work on creating some simulated network issues tests for the future. Folks may have different settings, so if anyone from the future is reading this, create a issue in the issue tracker if you can, so i can track exact conditions! thank you Ashleyyy33 for the report ❤️ and future person 🧑🏽🚀 filing future issue, in the future 🔮
[Translation work] note that right now all works are in one single file, it is not that big since it mostly text, not duplicate structure. The first check is to see if the language specific versions of the books in guttenburg exist. If not potentially translated that document automatically using a common llm/ai service they are not very big and all included are freely available.
If you see the library link above, at moment i'm trying to cover the western europe culture sphere. feel free to add requests here or in the issue tracker for specific books, and languages. Others can tackle or help finding what they need, i would appreciate the help.
Also feel free to request mod compt. I did a quick search and added a couple I saw, but let me know.
i seem to have a problem when placing books on the ground and into a stack they vanilla books but will have my character in a fixed throwing position once I place them this isn't a giant issue since once throwing/aiming anything else should have it work normally again but would love to see this fixed and wonderful mod btw
🚀 thanks for the report, I will check it out. I'm not suprised, character and item positioning has been a interesting journey.
bluntsflamin just pushed a release with your fix. Double check since I wasnt able to double check visually.
just checked and seems to work perfectly thanks for the fix
AD
CE ?
I could also change everything to kyBP. That way I’m sure to upset everyone—except archaeologists and climatologists.
Would love feedback on stack sizes on hand. Currently 3,but I can increase if so might add some buffers such as no running, or books randomly drop when you run.
The other option was to have be able to carry a single stack 5-8 but you have to hold it like barrel etc.
For piles I stuck to 16 but might go to 17 to match all the other in game piles.
Will this dilute ordinary loot spawns for books? Additionally, could you update the mod page to show the books? As well as a few examples of the texts added by the mod?
I added a list in the homepage along with a break down of the culture/tradition we are pulling from, will migrate it here at some point. I have a couple visual bugs to fix, once that is done will modify this page and add some screenshots.
And yes, dilutes but only for chests and panning with random lore book tables, shouldnt dilute for book cases or if the creators added specific books like in some in game locations and some better ruins. I would like to replace the vanilla book cases so you can pull more than the lore books and fill the rest with these, might start with piles first though.
Will this mod conflict with Pan Seashells? It also changes the loot from boney soil.
dont think so, i just dilute the lore books.
Love the mod! but i keep getting these in chest and ruins
I was planning an update for today, I fixed and it especially for you no need to do anything those randomizer should instantiate into books next time you load the new update.
fix should be in.
I examined the mod ingame and I do find it cool. I am noticing the English literature bias and will anticipate more books. Actually made me double-check some translation work I did 5 years ago of primary sources in the 15th century related to Switzerland and the Three Leagues (I still have .txt copies of those translations).
I always assumed the game corresponds to earth a bit later. Of course it's post-apocalyptic, but for example much of the art-style and topics in lore paintings would not be popular in irl art until the Renaissance (tapestries are older of course) while other things people associate with the medieval (plate armour etc) was also still popular in use by that time. I'm going to download this, but would be cool if there was a version with later literature too.
yeah should add a config associated with the dates, the repo include a list to pull from guttenberg so pretty doable.
I love the idea behind this mod! Do you plan to translate it into other languages? I have a Spanish server and it would be great to be able to add it.feel free to create issue, or do the necessary pull requests to get in the other languages in, i will make sure folks get contribution notices. this one thing I'm struggling with at least regarding ancient works, is which versions to include. i.e. should it be original latin, or english translation. I am going with the idea folks want to read in game so having per language sets would be ideal etc.
Hell yeah, now I can truly RP as a Library of Alexandria collecting and safeguarding old works
yeah the goal is to have a vintage story version of this https://store.steampowered.com/app/4197610/Librarian_Tidy_Up_the_Arcane_Library/
LMAO nice, I'd love to do this ingame, having a library is now on the cards
I used creative mode in my survival world to drop a smaller version of Better Ruins' underground library into my base and am looking forward to filling it with all the books I can find. And now I'm thinking about sticking a bookkeeper shop right next to it. Maybe set up a cafe, too.
Combined with Stained Artifice, I can sit and read books in the public domain underneath a row of stained glass windows. A great edition for 30 day month worlds.
Fantastic mod! Looking forward to any additional mods/updates that add more works. I think splitting off different languages into separate mods would work best.
I sort of agree with an above commenter (the point about art subjects is interesting, but unless we're talking about the technology involved in producing said artwork, like the chemistry and sourcing of materials involved in making paints or the weaving style/predominance of tapestries, then I see that as a world having a different history with artistic subjects and movements than necessarily dating a world) that I saw this world as a bit later than 1300s, mainly because of teleporters, real, reusable gliders (since good ol' Leo from Vinci is late 1400s to early 1500s) and huge ruins like the Resonance Archives indicating serious excavation and construction tech. Since in the vanilla game (currently) the only NPCs are traders, one utterly miniscule hamlet that's...what, a handful of households? and no children, which makes you wonder if they're capable of producing children, who are a huge asset in agrarian communities, and a single hermit, I see the technology as necessarily scaled down to meet the needs of the population, regardless of what time frame it actually is. Put another way, you're not going to be making petri dishes and bolt-action rifles if you have 20 total workers in your civilization. But books last a long-ass time if stored (or forgotten in the right climate) properly, so you could easily have books from the 15th-early 16th centuries.
Incredibly dumb idea: perishable books that pair with a librarian NPC. The fresh books last 1-2 months and then perish into overdue books, at which point if you have them in your inventory the NPC chucks rocks at you until you drop them. Way beyond the scope of this mod but if anyone is inspired by that have fun, lol.
❤️I was going to ask someone to make a vs version of the library arcana from the game to add as a ruins! Then put a bunch of empty bookcases and piles everywhere. One thing we def is a replacement for aged bookshelves to be able to remove the books themselves, other than the lore ones. Yeah def need a way to compost books ;) especially if you get them wet.
