VS Radio

VS Radio adds a placeable radio block that plays real music out loud in the world. Place it down, right click to open the controls, paste a link, and it plays at that spot with proper 3D sound that gets quieter as you walk away. It is built to feel like something that belongs in the world, a bit of salvage you would dig up in a ruin, rather than a shiny modern gadget dropped into the game.

What it can play

You can play from YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, direct mp3 and ogg links, and live internet radio stations including Radio Garden, Icecast and Shoutcast streams. Paste a normal video or song link and it downloads and plays that track. Paste a live station and it streams it continuously like a real radio. It even recognises a live stream on its own so you just paste and play.

Sound that fits the world

The audio is fully positional. It is loudest at the radio and fades with distance, and it now stays fuller further out so it carries nicely across a shop or a base. Walls matter too. The sound fills a room, leaks out through open doorways and windows, and goes quiet if you seal it off behind solid walls, so a radio inside your house does not blast across the whole map. Closed doors and glass muffle it rather than cutting it off completely.

Playlists and looping

You can loop a single song, or turn on loop through all downloaded songs to play everything you have downloaded one after another and start over at the end, giving you your own endless station. Name your songs so nearby players see the track on the now playing display.

Made for servers

VS Radio comes with a full admin panel for server owners, opened with the command /radioadmin and locked to players with admin permission. From there you can turn all radio playback on or off, allow or block live streams, set a max range and max volume that every radio must respect, and build a whitelist of who is allowed to use radios. You can also set allowed or blocked website lists to control exactly where music can come from. Every limit is enforced on the server so it cannot be bypassed by editing client files, and there is a built in Wiki tab that explains each option. Players who are not allowed to play something get a clear message telling them why.

For everyone else there is a personal mute all radios option in the Settings tab that silences every radio for you alone, without affecting anyone else.

How it works

Each player resolves and plays the audio locally, and only the short link is ever sent over the network, never the audio itself. The tools it needs are fetched automatically the first time you play something, so there is nothing to install by hand. If YouTube ever asks you to confirm you are not a bot, there is a browser cookies option in the Settings tab that fixes it.

Requirements and notes

Built for Vintage Story 1.22 and needs to be installed on both the server and every client that wants to hear the music. This is meant for personal and shop use, please do not use it to redistribute copyrighted audio.

I am OBSESSED with this mod! It's so good thank you so much, friend :)

Vaoth, Sep 1st at 8:14 PM

Turns out it was ConfigLib's hidden code causing the crashes, as it detected this mod quite consistently due to supposedly obsfuscated code. Could you open source the code so everyone can review why it would be obsfuscated?

Anyone can check the .dll with a decompiler and confirm it is indeed obfuscated. Also if this mod is doing what it states it requires immediate review to check for network vulnerabilities!

NotRealyCreative, Aug 29th at 10:17 PM

Do you have a github or something were I can review the source code for this? I'm a little nervous about installing a mod that interacts with the internet like this without knowing exactly what it does.

Maddog033, Aug 26th at 8:43 PM

This is currently very risky to add to servers. We have attempted to install this 3 times across two different servers with fatal client crash loops after each attempt. Not saying this is directly the mod author's fault, but I would avoid this modded in a multiplayer environment.

Icepigeaon, Aug 2nd at 3:37 PM

adapt it for servers

Vaoth, Aug 1st at 4:41 PM

After installing this mod my server started to crash out, even after removing the mod. Checking other crashes related to "HudEntityNameTags.OnRenderGUI" recently in the VS discord, it seems like this mod is the common culprit.

I ran into this issue on my server, couldve never known it was this mod causing it.

edit: It was caused by configlib since that mod has malware in it that crashes clients when you have a mod that uses obfuscated code.

Is there a maximum length of video that it can do?

Mion, Jul 29th at 5:52 PM

Would it be possible to have the sound ignore any items/furniture between the radio and the player? I noticed that the sound gets randomly blocked by non-solid blocks such as placed items and furniture. So when moving around in the house the radio sound volume jumps up and down irregularly. Solid blocks and chiseled blocks are fine though.

Good catch, that was a real bug. The sound blocking was counting furniture and placed items as things that muffle it, which is why the volume jumped around as you moved past your own decor. I just pushed an update so only actual solid walls block the sound now, and furniture, placed items, glass, doors and chiseled blocks all let it through cleanly. Grab the latest version and it should be smooth as you walk around. Thanks for the clear report.

Thanks for the quick fix! However I now notice that quarter corner logs, tree logs and debarked tree logs block the sound as well :p

If you place a quarter corner log or any other type of log in between you and the radio and move away, the sound gets completely muted at a certain distance.

The radio seems to be crashing the nearby players on a server when music is playing.

@Sakura_Kitsurugi: The radio seems to be crashing the nearby players on a server when music is playing. Crash Report Running on 64 bit Linux (Arch Linux) [Kernel 7.1.3.2] with 31159 MB RAMGame Version: v1.22.5 (Stable)7/29/2026 2:31:18 PM: Critical error occurredLoaded Mods

I actually went through the whole radio mod line by line to be sure, and its definitely not the radio. The crash is in HudEntityNameTags which is the games own code for the floating names above players and entities. The radio adds no entities and no name tags, it doesnt change any game rendering, and it doesnt patch any game code at all, which is the only way a mod could even run inside that crash. The whole mod only mentions the player entity once and thats just to check if youre loaded in. So theres genuinely no path for it to cause this. My best guess is that people gather around the radio when music plays, so more players are on screen and that makes a name tag bug from the game or another mod show up more often. If you send me your full mod list I can help you find which one, and I can hop on to look too.

i have a good idea, the idea is a central radio were another player can setup a playlist that others can tune into, kind of like a radio broadcaster, which can be used for rp reasons

That is a really cool idea and yeah its doable. The way I picture it is a broadcaster sets up a station with a playlist and other radios can tune into that station and all hear the same thing in sync, kind of like tuning to a frequency. It fits the mod really well and would be great for rp. Its a decent chunk of work so no promises on timing but Im definitely noting it down for a future update.

_Sharkie_, Jul 28th at 7:58 PM

Got a few question(s) about how this works:

1.) Is it just a "drag and drop" thing right, each client doesn' need to download yt-dlp?

2.) And how does it handle "cleaning up" the audio files? or do these always remain downloaded and have to be removed manually?

3.) If one client cannot download the audio for say geo-region lock issues this won't crash them will it?

Oreo_ , Jul 28th at 9:06 PM

Good questions. First one, yeah its basically drag and drop, put it in the mods folder on the server and each client. You dont install yt-dlp yourself, the mod grabs it and ffmpeg automatically the first time you play something.

Second, downloaded songs are kept so they dont redownload every time, but theres a Clear downloaded tracks button in Settings and a delete button on each song in the Tracks tab. Live streams clean up their own buffered audio as they go.

Third, no it wont crash. If a client cant download something for a geo lock or any reason it just fails quietly for that one person with a small error and they dont hear that track, everyone else is fine.

i have a question, can you make it so it can be heard from further away?, i keep having to move it with me while trying to do stuff around my base. also the loop option doesn't work

@Echokiller92: i have a question, can you make it so it can be heard from further away?, i keep having to move it with me while trying to do stuff around my base. also the loop option doesn't work

Fixed the loop bug, it wasnt applying when you toggled it mid song. The update also adds an admin panel with more control over the radios. Im pushing it in about an hour, thanks for reporting.

Oreo_ , Jul 28th at 1:09 AM
@Echokiller92: you're welcome, this is a great mod, it really helps with setting the mood for rooms

The update is live now. If you want radios to reach further, open the admin panel with /radioadmin and turn up the max range there, you can push it all the way up to 64 blocks. Once thats set, open the radio itself and drag its range slider up to the new limit and it will carry a lot further. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Yeah it works fine on 1.22.3, thats what its built for. Good news is that crash isnt coming from the radio. If you look at the report every line is in the games own code and the error is in HandleBulkAnimationPacket, which is the game syncing entity animations from the server. The radio doesnt add any entities or animations, so if it was involved youd see vsradio somewhere in that trace and its not there. Easiest way to confirm is to remove just the radio and youll likely still see the same crash. If you want to track down whats triggering it, disabling mods in batches and seeing when it stops is the usual way. Happy to take another look at the report with you if you want a hand narrowing it down.

@Oreo_: Keep me posted.

okay, so it happened again, twice. once when getting apples from a fruit tree, and a second time (that's the crash report) when using the spinning wheel from immersive fibercraft, (which happened before with the mod on, but never before turning the mod on). i unfortunately wasn't able to replicate it on singleplayer, it happened only on this server. we'll maybe try installing the mod tomorrow and see if it'll work then

Hey, I went through both your crash reports carefully. The first one crashes in the games entity animation syncing and the second one in the part that draws the name tags above entities. Both of those are core game systems for entities, and the radio doesnt add any entities, name tags or animations, and it doesnt patch any game code either, so theres no way for it to run inside those methods. Neither report even mentions the radio anywhere, its all the games own code. So this is coming from a different mod, most likely something entity or creature related. The quickest way to confirm is to pull just the radio and load back in and youll almost certainly still crash. If you send me your full mod list I can help you narrow down which one is actually causing it.

okay, it kept crashing for me but not for everybody else, i disabled every mod besides hud clock patched and zoom button reborn and now it works. no idea what was causing it. these are all the mods i had on my client, not all were active, i only remember that optitime, falling eco machina and ecomachina and tungsten was off:

No idea if this could work, but it would be cool to be able to stick it in your offhand like a boombox and have it play while you run around.

I was just yesterday thinking about how it'd be cool to have a radio or walkman that you could like put songs into a folder for like you can with GTAs radio. This isn't quite that but it's still exceptionally cool!

Thanks, that means a lot. A custom radio where you drop your own songs into a folder is a really cool idea. I could possibly add that in a future update.

Just saw the new version! Thank you so much! Gonna be listening to my local morning zoo shows while I hammer out a set of meteoric tools!

Hi! First of all, thank you for creating this mod.

I'm having an issue when trying to play YouTube audio. yt-dlp fails with the following errors:

  • HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests)
  • "Sign in to confirm you're not a bot"
  • It also warns that no supported JavaScript runtime was found.

From what I can tell, the mod doesn't seem to support passing additional yt-dlp arguments, such as --cookies-from-browser chrome, which would allow authenticated requests and avoid YouTube's bot verification.

Would it be possible to add support for custom yt-dlp arguments (or at least an option to use browser cookies)? I think it would help users avoid these YouTube restrictions.

Thanks again for your work on this mod!

Hey, quick update. The fix for this is done and ready to go. Im planning to push the release around 1pm EST since im finishing up a few other patches first, and Im also adding live internet radio stream support in the same update. So when it drops youll get the cookies fix for the YouTube bot check plus live stream stations all at once. Appreciate you being patient, it wont be long.

Hi! Thanks again for the update!

I wanted to let you know that I can't download the new version because the download link seems to be broken.

Also, I have one small suggestion for future releases: could you include the mod version in the mod file (or in the filename)? It would make it much easier to know which version is installed.

Thanks again for the quick fix and all the work you've put into the mod!

Ah that was my mistake, sorry about that. I had it labeled 1.3.0 by accident when it should be 1.2.0, so the link got mixed up. Ive fixed it and reuploaded it as 1.2.0 now, thats the correct current version. The file is named vsradio 1.2.0 zip so its clear which one it is. Try again in a minute and it should download fine. Thanks for catching it.

does this work if i add a queue link?

Oreo_ , Jul 26th at 4:34 AM
@WHYGODWHY232: does this work if i add a queue link?

A normal playlist link works fine, it just grabs the tracks in it one at a time. Where it falls apart is those endless auto generated queue or mix links since there’s no fixed list of songs to pull, it downloads finite tracks not a live stream. So a real playlist yes, an infinite radio style queue not really.

can upload on clientside ans still use in server?

Oreo_ , Jul 26th at 4:33 AM
@DemocracyOfficer: can upload on clientside ans still use in server?

It has to be on both the server and every client that wants to hear it. The server just holds the url and syncs it, but each client is the one that actually downloads and plays the audio locally so it needs the mod too. If you only put it clientside the server won’t know about the block and it won’t work. Easiest is just drop it in the mods folder on both.

I love how the the look of the radio and how it fits like something in the world you can find.

Thank you, that honestly means a lot. That was exactly the goal, I didn't want it to feel like some shiny modern thing dropped into the game, more like an old piece of salvage you'd dig up in a ruin somewhere. Really glad it reads that way to you.😁

Thanks for this mod! Is there a list of what this mod will play beyond YT links? Hard to find one of these mods that handles both YT links, Bandcamp and internet radio streams, possibly also Spotify?

Thanks, glad you're liking it! It runs on yt-dlp under the hood so it plays way more than just YouTube. Bandcamp works great, both single tracks and full albums, and so do SoundCloud, Vimeo, Mixcloud, the Internet Archive and Newgrounds. You can also just paste a direct link to an audio file like an mp3 or ogg and it'll play that too. Basically if yt-dlp supports a site, the radio does.

Internet radio streams are the one weak spot right now. The block is built to grab a track, download it, then play it out in the world, so a never ending live stream doesn't really fit that yet since it'd just try to download forever. If people want it I can look at adding a proper live stream mode down the line.

Spotify is a no unfortunately. It's DRM protected so no mod can actually pull the audio from it. Anything that claims to is really just finding the same song on YouTube behind the scenes, so you're better off just pasting the YouTube or Bandcamp link.
