Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.22.3 - 1.22.5, potentially outdated):
BirdsOfPrey_2.0.0.zip  1-click install

Unfortunately as of today 07/30. The company I worked for has gone under so I’m jobless and I won’t be working further on the dino mods until I can get a new job

Legacy of the Phanerozoic Forked:

Adds a large collection of dinosaurs to Vintage Story, including adults, juveniles, eggs, nests, natural spawning, drops, combat behavior, hunting behavior, and family-specific configuration options.

This mod is part of the modular Legacy of the Phanerozoic Dinosaur Suite. Each dinosaur family is packaged separately, allowing players and server owners to install only the families they want or combine all available family packs into one larger prehistoric ecosystem.

Version 2.0.0 reorganizes the suite so every family owns its own creatures, spawning, balance, combat profiles, drops, configuration, and assets. Shared runtime functions are provided by DinoRuntime.

Requirements

  • Vintage Story 1.22.3+
  • DinoRuntime 2.0.0
  • Must be installed on both the server and connecting clients

DinoRuntime is a required shared dependency that provides common combat utilities, safe-navigation helpers, and mounted-owner support. It does not control family spawning or gameplay balance.

Compatible Dinosaur Modules

This mod can be installed alongside any other Legacy of the Phanerozoic 2.0.0 family module:

  • Birds of Prey
  • Carnivorous Bull
  • Domed Head
  • Fused Body
  • Horned Crown
  • Horrible Hands
  • Long Neck
  • Ocean Tyrant
  • Plated Back
  • Sailed Spine
  • Scythe Claws
  • Sharp Tooth
  • Shovel Mouth
  • Tyrant King

You may install one family, several families, or the complete suite. All installed family modules must use matching 2.0.0 versions and DinoRuntime 2.0.0.

Optional Mod Compatibility

Conditional compatibility is included for several other mods. These are optional and are not required for the dinosaur family to function:

  • Butchering
  • Pet AI
  • Jaunt
  • XSkills Fork
  • Combat Overhaul Fork
  • Blood Trail
  • Biomes

Land-based dinosaur families may also include compatibility for:

  • Footprints
  • A Culinary Artillery
  • Terrain Slabs

Configuration

Each dinosaur family owns its own configuration and balance settings, including:

  • World-generation spawning
  • Low runtime repopulation
  • Group and herd sizes
  • Juvenile ratios
  • Nest generation
  • Nearby population limits
  • Movement and animation speeds
  • Combat damage and behavior
  • Hunting and targeting rules
  • Drops and harvesting balance

Version 2.0.0 uses a new configuration schema. When upgrading from older releases, outdated dinosaur configurations are reset to the supported 2.0.0 defaults.

Back up customized settings before upgrading. Deleting old dinosaur configuration files before the first 2.0.0 startup is recommended to ensure a completely clean migration.

Installation

  1. Stop the server and back up the world.
  2. Remove every older version of the Dino family mods.
  3. Remove all older DinoCore or DinoRuntime ZIPs.
  4. Remove old Dinos Configs.
  5. Install DinoRuntime 2.0.0.
  6. Install this family’s 2.0.0 ZIP.
  7. Install the same files on every connecting client.
  8. Clear the Vintage Story cache before starting.
  9. Delete old dinosaur configuration files for the cleanest upgrade.

Do not keep multiple versions of the same family mod or DinoRuntime in the Mods folder.

Important Upgrade Notice

Version 2.0.0 is a breaking clean-reset release.

Do not combine:

  • 2.0.0 family modules with older 0.5.x family modules
  • DinoRuntime 2.0.0 with older DinoCore releases
  • Multiple versions of the same dinosaur family
  • Server and client installations using different versions

Using matching versions across DinoRuntime, all family modules, the server, and every client is required for a stable installation.

Version 2.0.0 — Dinosaur Suite Relaunch

This is a breaking clean/reset release. Remove all older dinosaur mod and DinoCore/DinoRuntime ZIPs before installing. Also recommend deleting old config files just in case.

  • Reorganized DinoCore into DinoRuntime, a lightweight shared dependency for combat utilities, safe-navigation helpers, and mounted-owner support.
  • Removed species spawning, balancing, drops, and family-specific gameplay settings from DinoRuntime.
  • Standardized every dinosaur family and DinoRuntime to version 2.0.0.
  • Every dinosaur family now requires DinoRuntime 2.0.0.
  • Cleaned and standardized mod names, filenames, manifests, versions, and dependency information.
  • Moved family-specific spawning, behavior, combat, drops, configurations, and assets into their respective family mods.
  • Fixed excessive dinosaur populations caused by both sexes independently initiating groups.
  • Adult females now act as the primary natural and runtime spawn anchors, with males appearing as companions.
  • Reduced world-generation spawn rates, nest generation, runtime repopulation, herd sizes, and nearby population limits.
  • Disabled direct runtime baby spawning.
  • Reduced Ocean Tyrant spawning frequency and improved nearby population checks.
  • Moved Ocean Tyrant deep-ocean spawning, ship attacks, swimming, and depth control into the Ocean Tyrant mod.
  • Added a one-time configuration reset when upgrading from older release lines so all installations begin with the supported 2.0.0 defaults.
  • Existing customized dinosaur configs should be backed up before upgrading.
  • Ocean Tyrant now uses OceanTyrantV20.json.
  • Long Neck now uses LongNeckCfgV20.json.
  • Legacy Ocean Tyrant, Long Neck, and DinoCore gameplay configs are ignored by 2.0.0.
  • Newly generated 2.0.0 configurations remain editable.

Dependencies

  • Removed Butchering as a hard dependency from all 14 dinosaur mods.
  • Dinosaur mods can now load and function without Butchering installed.
  • Butchering compatibility is now conditional.

Butchering behavior

  • When Butchering is installed:
  • Dinosaur carcass items are enabled.
  • Butcherable behaviors function normally.
When Butchering is not installed:
  • Dinosaur mods still load cleanly.
  • Optional carcass assets remain disabled.
  • No missing-class or dependency failure should occur.

0.3.11 — Final Spawn Audit and Corrections

Aquatic spawning

  • Corrected Ocean Tyrants mistakenly checking Terrain Slabs as possible spawn surfaces.
  • Restored Ocean Tyrants to water-only spawning.
  • Preserved their live-birth reproduction system.
  • Ocean Tyrants do not generate nests.

Population balance

  • Adult dinosaur worldgen pressure is approximately 27% lower than the original versions.
  • Nest generation pressure is approximately 91% lower than the original working rates.
  • Runtime adult spawning remains disabled by default.
  • Existing regions will not continuously refill with new adults unless runtime spawning is manually enabled.

0.3.10 — Natural Nest and Spawn Rework

Nest spawning fixes

  • Repaired six dinosaur families whose nest spawn conditions were stored in the wrong JSON section.
  • Restored natural nest spawning for:
  • Birds of Prey
  • Domed Head
  • Fused Body
  • Horrible Hands
  • Plated Back
  • Scythe Claws
Enabled natural Sailed Spine nests. Corrected Sailed Spine nests having triesPerChunk set to 0. Removed species-specific nest overrides that bypassed family-level spawn balancing.

Nest population balance

  • Greatly reduced excessive natural nest generation.
  • Natural nests now generate individually instead of in large clusters.
  • Natural nests now receive one adult female guardian.
  • Reduced natural nest hatch sizes by dinosaur size:
  • Apex predators and sauropods: 1 hatchling
  • Most medium and large dinosaurs: 2 hatchlings
  • Smaller herd and pack dinosaurs: 3 hatchlings

Adult dinosaur spawning

  • Rebalanced world-generation rates across all dinosaur families.
  • Reduced excessive spawn pressure while keeping dinosaurs reasonably discoverable.
  • Added explicit climate conditions to every adult dinosaur species.
  • Runtime spawning remains disabled by default to prevent overpopulation in existing chunks.
  • Runtime spawning settings now function properly when manually enabled.

Species-specific fixes

  • Fixed Gigantspinosaurus being incorrectly nested inside another species’ spawn entry.
  • Fixed Barsboldia having no valid natural spawn conditions.
  • Removed excessively high spawn overrides from:
  • Deinocheirus
  • Paraxenisaurus
Removed high-rate nest overrides from:
  • Birds of Prey

  • Added Terrain Slabs surfaces to valid land-dinosaur spawn checks.
  • Added Terrain Slabs surfaces to valid nest spawn checks.
  • Kept aquatic dinosaurs restricted to appropriate water blocks.

Configuration

Added new ConfigLib controls to each nesting dinosaur family:

  • Nest worldgen attempts per chunk
  • Maximum hatchlings from natural nests

Existing adult worldgen and runtime-spawn controls remain available.

Overall changes since 0.3.9

  • Fixed natural spawning for all dinosaur families.
  • Fixed natural nest generation for all egg-laying families.
  • Reduced excessive nest clusters and hatchling counts.
  • Moderately lowered adult worldgen rates.
  • Preserved dinosaur visibility without allowing rapid overpopulation.
  • Fixed broken species spawn entries.
  • Added complete climate conditions.
  • Added Terrain Slabs spawning support.
  • Preserved compatibility with Place On Slabs.
  • Preserved existing dinosaur, egg, nest and pet IDs.
  • Made Butchering completely optional.
  • Kept Butchering support functional when installed.
  • No dinosaur species, nests, eggs, babies, models, textures, recipes or riding features were removed.

World-generation note

The revised adult and nest distribution mainly affects newly generated chunks. Existing dinosaurs, nests, eggs and tamed animals remain unchanged. Previously saved ConfigLib values may override the packaged defaults.

  • Large apex predators now actively detect and hunt players.
  • Medium predators now use shorter and more appropriate detection ranges.
  • Large herbivores now behave territorially or defensively instead of hunting players across long distances.
  • Passive herd species primarily retaliate after being attacked or when protecting young.
  • Player aggression continues to respect the world’s creatureHostility setting.

Examples of aggressively configured families include:

  • Tyrant King
  • Sharp Tooth
  • Carnivorous Bull
  • Sailed Spine
  • Ocean Tyrant
  • Larger Birds of Prey species

Dinosaur Ecology and Wildlife Protection

  • Rebuilt predator prey lists to prevent dinosaurs from slaughtering nearly every animal in the world.
  • Removed broad wildcard targeting of entire wildlife families.
  • Removed livestock from normal dinosaur prey lists.
  • Removed horses and commonly domesticated animals from normal prey lists.
  • Removed tamed creatures from normal prey lists.
  • Prevented predators from automatically hunting nearly every other dinosaur family.
  • Added smaller, species-appropriate prey lists.

Examples:

  • Large raptors primarily hunt small wild animals and wild birds.
  • Large land predators primarily hunt wild pigs, gazelles, deer, moose, or bison.
  • Spinosaurids primarily hunt fish and aquatic creatures.
  • Mosasaurs primarily target aquatic wildlife.

Additional ecology changes:

  • Reduced wildlife detection distances.

  • Reduced the number of juveniles naturally accompanying female dinosaurs.
  • Prevented many natural groups from spawning with multiple adults and several babies at once.
  • Large apex predators now generally appear alone or as a pair.
  • Herd species still form groups, but at substantially smaller sizes.

Breeding Balancing

  • Reduced egg and offspring counts across all families.
  • Reduced exceptionally large clutches that previously produced up to 20 offspring.
  • Increased pregnancy and egg-preparation times.
  • Greatly increased breeding cooldowns.
  • Added especially long cooldowns for giant sauropods and apex predators.
  • Reduced the number of incubating eggs generated by natural nests.
  • Preserved breeding while reducing the chance of dinosaur populations overwhelming a world.

General breeding ranges now follow the size and rarity of each family:

  • Small dinosaurs generally produce 2–4 eggs.
  • Medium dinosaurs generally produce 1–3 eggs.
  • Large predators and sauropods generally produce 1–2 offspring.
  • Large species use considerably longer breeding cooldowns.

Butchering Compatibility

  • Added integrated compatibility with Butchering 1.13.5.
  • Dinosaur carcasses now correctly enter the Butchering processing system.
  • Added support for bleeding, skinning, and harvesting dinosaur carcasses.
  • Preserved appropriate meat, hide, sinew, blood, and original dinosaur drops.
  • Removed the need for a separate dinosaur Butchering compatibility patch.
  • Added compatibility independently to every dinosaur-family mod.

ConfigLib Support

  • Added per-family configuration support through ConfigLib 1.12.0.
  • Each installed dinosaur family creates its own YAML configuration file under:

VintagestoryData/ModConfig/

Examples:

dromaeosauridae.yaml

abelisauridae.yaml

spinosauridae.yaml

tyrannosauridae.yaml

Server owners can configure:

  • Natural world-generation spawn rate

  • Updated network versions to numeric-only values.
  • Standardized the main release version as 0.3.8.
  • Removed internal test labels from release filenames.

Hey, big issue: a friend found that the velociraptors hit from 10 to 20 blocks away in a full circle. Has this been fixed in the newest update? This was on the older version, and they are silent. If these glitches haven't been fixed yet, can you fix them when you get the chance? Good luck finding a new job, btw. Thank you for forking these.

The SOUND I made when I saw someone forked these. Been waiting to see them updated.

It kinda seems like the vast majority of spawns are replaced with dinos, is there anyway to make them more rare?

any chance of getting a pic or two of the dinos.

@Souroman: Do these have compatibility with the Biomes mod like the original?

mostly, it contains the original mods compatibiliy patch for biomes but i would guess that it out of date so maybe issues with the dinos spawning in the correct regions. this is something i could probably fix

From what i have seen so far, looks like the orginal patches still work.I was roaming around North America and saw dinos like trex and triceratops. so seems to be working as intended. Might want to add that to the compatable mods list.

Hi! I appreciate you!

Do you happen to have a port for 1.22.2? I am using all the old ones and yeah... But I'm not ready for 1.22.3 just yet :c

currently not, the mod should work for the most part on 1.22.2, i could see a possible issue with tamed dinos tho, they may still act wild even when tamed

Well, I don't really tame them, so I will update my dino mods.

Currently the biggest issue I have is 50% of the mods for the dinos, whe the adults grow up from kids, they, disappear. Which sucks because I had a pen of tyrannos I was waiting on to harvest for meat :x

I will let you know if it causes any other issues with these

Edit:
They are dependant on 1.22.3... Thank you though!

od, not sure why they disapear when grown up. maybe another mod causing issues. As for the population of dinos im working on that cause they are indeed taking over xD
