TV Mod adds three craftable, placeable televisions that play video files, network streams and YouTube links directly on their screens — with positional 3D audio and playback that stays in sync for every player on the server. Queue up an evening of videos on the Cinema TV and watch with your whole settlement.

Features

  • Plays almost anything — YouTube links (just paste the normal URL), direct MP4/WebM links, HLS streams (.m3u8), RTSP, and local video files.
  • Server-synced playback — everyone sees the same video at the same position. Late joiners land mid-video where everyone else is; clients continuously drift-correct.
  • Video queue — add multiple URLs and the server advances everyone through the playlist together. Pause, skip, back and loop controls affect all viewers, in sync.
  • Positional 3D audio — sound comes from the TV through the game's own audio engine, panning as you move, with aggressive distance falloff (silent beyond each TV's configured audio range). Respects the game's master volume.
  • Per-TV controls — right-click any TV for the remote: volume, audio range and view distance, applied live for everyone without interrupting playback. Server operators cap all values in the config.
  • Aspect-correct picture — non-16:9 videos are letterboxed, never stretched.
  • Light emission — a playing TV casts light into the room; it switches off with the screen.
  • Wrench rotation — right-click with a wrench to rotate a placed TV 90°.

The three TVs

  • Television — 2 m flatscreen, visible up to 64 blocks (max 128).
  • Large Television (100") — 2.2 m flatscreen in 720p, visible up to 96 blocks.
  • Cinema TV — a 6 m wall of screen in 1080p, visible up to 128 blocks. For the whole village.

All three are craftable in survival (iron, glass and temporal gears — the Cinema TV and Large TV upgrade from a basic Television), and available in a dedicated TV Mod creative tab.

How to use

  1. Place a TV and right-click it to open the remote.
  2. Paste a YouTube link (or any video URL) and press Play — or press Add to queue to build a playlist.
  3. Adjust volume, audio range and view distance with the stepper buttons; changes apply instantly for everyone.

Multiplayer — please read

  • The mod must be installed on the server and on every client, all the same version. Each player's PC decodes its own copy of the stream (like tuning into the same broadcast); the server only syncs state.
  • Local file paths only display for players who have that exact file. Use URLs for shared viewing — the remote warns you about this.
  • Server operators can cap volume, audio range and view distance in ModConfig/tvmod.json. Client requests are clamped server-side.

Requirements & limitations

  • Windows only for the bundled decoder binaries (LibVLC) and YouTube resolver (yt-dlp). On Linux/Mac a system-wide VLC install is used as a fallback, but this is untested territory.
  • Internet access is required on each client for YouTube/stream playback.
  • If YouTube changes and links stop resolving months from now, drop a newer yt-dlp.exe into VintagestoryData/ModConfig/ — it overrides the bundled one.

Troubleshooting

Check VintagestoryData/Logs/client-main.log for lines tagged [tvmod] — they trace every playback step (state received → URL resolved → decoder started → frames on screen) and name the exact failure point. Black screen for one player usually means an outdated mod version on their side or an antivirus blocking yt-dlp.

Credits & third-party components

  • LibVLC (VideoLAN) — video/audio decoding — LGPL 2.1
  • LibVLCSharp — .NET bindings for LibVLC — LGPL 2.1
  • yt-dlp — YouTube URL resolution — Unlicense

Playback of third-party content is subject to the respective platform's terms of service. What you watch on your server is up t

v1.2.1 — Initial release

  • Three craftable TVs: Television (2m), Large Television 100" (2.2m, 720p) and Cinema TV (6m wall screen, 1080p, visible up to 128 blocks)
  • Plays YouTube links, direct video URLs, HLS/RTSP streams and local video files — YouTube resolved by bundled yt-dlp, decoding by bundled LibVLC (no external installs needed)
  • Server-synced playback: everyone watches the same video at the same position; late joiners land mid-video and clients drift-correct automatically
  • Video queue with synced pause / skip / back / loop controls — one player's remote controls the show for everyone
  • Positional 3D audio through the game's audio engine, with aggressive distance falloff and per-TV audio range
  • Per-TV volume, audio range and view distance, adjustable live from the remote; all caps enforceable server-side via ModConfig/tvmod.json
  • Playing TVs emit light; rotate placed TVs with a wrench
  • Survival recipes (iron + glass + temporal gears) and a dedicated TV Mod creative tab

Requires the mod on the server and all clients (same version). Windows natives bundled; see the mod description for details.

Hey! is it possible to add a feature to skip through a video's timeline? Would be useful for longer videos incase of desync or something breaking, awesome mod btw love it! :)

Hi! I love the mod concept, but I did run into a few issues. On my dedicated server some players weren't able to see what was playing, but could hear the sound. Other players could see the screen but it was either out of sync with the audio or the screen was super oversaturated. I tested on singleplayer without any other mods, but the oversaturated brightness was still there. My friend tested on their singleplayer world, and they didn't have the weird oversaturation but their audio was delayed by a whole second. Would love to know if anyone else has had these issues.

I am currently aware of the Player not being able to see the video at times but it was in a much worse state before the offical realese but i am activly working on the fix im also working on the sync issue and Oversaturated issue as i as that was an oversite im sorry but ive narrowed the Oversaturated to be a Compadability issue with this mod https://mods.vintagestory.at/ancestralblissshaders not correctly using the new bloom shader and trying to use the new tvs raycast shader at the same time this may also help me fix some other things aswell so please hold tight

thanks for the feedback and support 🥰

Can't express how cool this is. There was another mod like this but it was broken and not being updated :( i was close to commisioning someone to make a fork of it / fix it, so im really happy to have discovered this mod. Me and my friend have been wanting to build a cinema for ages in our world. Wanted to ask, would a 1x1 block somehow be possible ?? Like an old CRT TV?

This... suddenly I need this. :O I am on Linux tho. Will it also use the system installed yt-dlp? I'll test this out this weekend! Suddenly need to build a living room, stock it with trippy shrooms, whisky, and... this game suddenly needs a bean bag mod! !!!

The Living Room idea Sounds Sick man, but as far as Linux testing goes i have not been able to doe much in the way of that, if their is already a yt-dip installed in your linix distro then you should be find anything else the mod should handle if their is any problems le me know
