Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.22.0 - 1.22.3, potentially outdated):
ReelMower-1.6.1.zip 1-click install
Update log
v1.3.4 Multiplayer โ first MP build; others can see the blade spinning when you mow.
v1.3.5 The Sound Update โ a real looping mow sound at ground level; nearby players hear it too.
v1.3.6 โ fixed the sound looping forever after a blade snap.
v1.3.7 Dowels! โ a lightweight 2-stick wall/tree peg to hang the mower on.
v1.3.8 โ fixed the Dowels recipe (2 sticks).
v1.3.9 โ extensible grass-cutting for other mods; Wildgrass included.
v1.4.0 Some Assembly Required โ build the whole mower by hand, log to tool, with 12 shaft woods that show on the finished mower. (Old mowers must be rebuilt.)
v1.4.1 โ shaft recipe now registers; wood texture no longer reverts while mowing.
v1.4.2 โ fixed the long-standing multiplayer mowing crash.
v1.4.3 โ real hammer swing on frame assembly (left-click); mod sounds fixed; nail refunds return the right metal.
v1.4.4 / v1.4.5 Linux fix โ the release zip was packaged with Windows paths, silently breaking asset loading on Linux; fixed and verified. Big thanks to Zeriz. Added a creative "Reel Mower" tab.
v1.4.6 โ land claims now respected across all five interactions; aged-wood recipe fixed; tested on a real dedicated server.
v1.4.7 โ fixed a hammer-swing server crash (thanks Sparklingtips); blade blank costs 2 ingots as documented.
v1.4.8 โ durability sits ahead of the scythe; worn blades come back at 0 to sharpen on a Grinding Wheel.
v1.4.9 โ bare-blade stuck-animation first fix (thanks Findal_Falum); Pain & Atonement quietly added.
v1.5.0 Details Details Details โ loose stones break for loot + a little damage (configurable); stuck animation truly fixed; 7-setting server config; grass-fling particles; dry-grass auto-collect; Dowels mower-only.
v1.5.1 โ "A Cut Above" โ the mower rebuilt to its concept art (wishbone yoke, spoked wagon wheels, twisted reel cage), plus a smith-and-fit bed knife and dyeable grips in all 13 colors. Over 9,400 distinct mowers now. Non-breaking.
v1.5.2 โ "Push Comes to Mow" โ the mower grew wheels. Right-click to set it down as a rideable push cart and mow by pushing; wheels roll, the reel spins (geared), the blade drains like before. Everything carries through deploy/pack-up. Runs dry โ stops and dismounts you; hits water โ packs itself up. Shaft now also takes 6 iron bits + 2 plain cloth. New dependency: Cartwright's Caravan. Full server-compat pass + cleanup. Non-breaking.
v1.5.3 โ Left-click to seat โ seat a blade or fit a bed knife with left-click (attack) as well as right-click. Helps when a pet/creature mod's tamed animal stands between you and a placed mower and grabs the right-click. Right-click unchanged. Thanks to Mr_Posey.
v1.5.4 โ Point and Mow โ every placed part shows crosshair interaction prompts (seat/fit/remove/detach), blade & bed-knife prompts show their icon while held, and the cart reads "Push the mower" / "Pack up" instead of "Sit." Every prompt shows your actual keybind, not a hardcoded default.
v1.5.5 โ Snow Business โ the head that goes in the frame no longer has to be a reel blade. Seat a snow auger and the machine becomes a snowblower: push it through snow to carve a path and hurl the snow out a chute you aim left or right on the fly (snow is piled a few blocks over, not deleted). The auger is forged from the same blade blank โ just move the chisel to the other grid corner; the chute is a 3ร3 of oak boards, copper bits, a straight chute, and iron plates. Renders on the cart, placed, and in-hand with the auger spinning; full handbook coverage. Cutting behavior now lives on the head itself, so grass and snow each bring their own. Non-breaking โ every existing mower is untouched.
v1.5.6 โ "Fit and Finish" โ a model-accuracy pass. The bed knife moved to the rear of the reel, where a real push mower's sits โ it shears against the bottom-back of the blade's arc โ corrected on the held tool, the placed mower, and the cart. Trimmed a few frame struts that weren't earning their keep, and tuned the snow chute's shape. Model-only, fully non-breaking.
v1.5.7 โ "Chute Hotfix" โ fixed a client crash when interacting with a snow-auger mower (the chute's icon had lost its texture map). Also added compatibility for two more mods: Art of Growing (the mower now mows its grass) and Ecosystem โ Flora (mows its plants and grasses through every growth stage). Each applies only when that mod is installed.
v1.5.8 โ "Knobs for the Owner" โ three new server-config options: toggle the snowblower's snow-throw particles, choose whether the auger piles cleared snow or just clears it, and tune (or zero out) the blade's per-cut wear. Plus a display-polish pass โ fixed a plain reel mower drawing the auger and chute in-hand and in its tooltip, re-centered every item's inventory / dropped / held model on its own true center so previews sit right and finally match the hover tooltip, re-synced the loose snow-chute item to match the assembled snowblower exactly, and removed a stray old prototype item that was cluttering the creative menu. No gameplay changes unless you touch the config.
v1.5.9 โ "Growing Pains" โ grass & plant compatibility for three more mods: Floral Zones, Biodiversity, and Wild Farming - Revival (each applies only when installed). Art of Growing grass drops now follow its own pattern โ live grass yields fresh grass, already-dry grass yields hay, and the amount scales with the grass's length. Also flipped the tool-rack display 180ยฐ so a snow-auger mower hangs flush against the wall instead of poking through it.
v1.5.10 โ "Count Again" โ something new gets built by hand and fitted to every mower, and we're not going to tell you what it is โ but it pushes the count past 120,000 visually distinct mowers (north of 1.7 million once you count the metal you nailed it together with). Go build one and spot the difference. ๐ Fully non-breaking โ every mower already in your world is untouched. Also refined Art of Growing compatibility: mowing its dry grass now leaves the very same eaten patch its own scythe does.
v1.6.0 โ "Break New Ground" โ the head in the frame can now be a tiller drum: seat it and the machine becomes a Push Tiller that works grassy soil down stage by stage and, with a drag blade fitted behind, lays farmland (fertility carried straight over, never barren) โ ripping out grass and horsetail and mulching everything back in, keeping nothing. Tap the mode key to disengage the drum and wheel it around freely; chunky dirt clods fly as it digs. Forge the drum from the same blank (chisel top-left), craft the drag blade from 3 metal rods + 5 copper, and grind both back to sharp on a Grinding Wheel like the reel and auger. Renders spinning on the cart, placed, and in-hand; full hover prompts, handbook, and assembly guide. Non-breaking โ every existing mower and snowblower is untouched.
v1.6.1 โ "Groundskeeping"
- **Fixed recipe errors in the log.** The head- and drag-blade **repair** recipes used a metal wildcard that tried to generate a variant for every metal in the game โ including the many those parts don't come in โ so each world load printed a stack of harmless-but-noisy recipe errors. The repair recipes and the drag-blade crafting recipe are now written out explicitly for the seven metals those parts actually support, so the log stays clean. The recipes themselves are unchanged โ same ingredients, same results. (Thanks to Vulkanic_J for the report.)
- **The assembly hammer now wears while you build.** Hammering the shaft onto the frame took no durability before โ it does its share of tool wear now, ticking down across the three swings like any other hammer job.
- **Push Tiller sits flush on the Dowels rack.** Its drag blade poked back through the wall on display; the tiller is now flipped 180ยฐ on the mod's own Dowels rack so it hangs flush โ the same fix the snowblower's chute already got. Only affects the Dowels rack; vanilla tool racks are unchanged.
- **The drag blade wears on its own track now.** It used to ride along on the drum's durability; it keeps its **own** durability now, separate from the drum, draining one point per tile it flips to farmland. Worn out, the **drum keeps breaking ground** stage by stage โ no farmland trails behind until you re-sharpen the blade, so a spent drag blade never silently stops the whole machine. The deployed Push Tiller shows **both** numbers on look (drum and drag blade), and pulling the blade off returns it at its true remaining wear โ no free reset by refitting. Sharpen it on a Grinding Wheel like the drum, or re-forge it in the grid.
- **Non-breaking.** Any drag blade already fitted to a tiller from 1.6.0 simply starts its independent durability at full. Requires Cartwright's Caravan (unchanged). Vintage Story 1.22+.

v1.5.10 — "Count Again" Something new gets built by hand and fitted to every mower — and we're not going to tell you what it is. What we will tell you: it takes the number of visually distinct mowers from just over 9,000 to more than 120,000 (and north of 1.7 million once you count the metal you nailed it together with). Go build one and see if you can spot what changed. ๐ Fully non-breaking — every mower already in your world keeps working and looks exactly the same. Also: refined Art of Growing compatibility — mowing its dry grass now leaves the very same eaten patch its own scythe does (only applies with Art of Growing installed).

Patch notes (v1.5.9 — Growing Pains)More grass/flora mod compatibility. Added cut-list hitches for Floral Zones, Biodiversity: Flowers and Grass, and Wild Farming - Revival — the mower now cuts their flowers, ferns, and grasses. Each patch only applies when that mod is installed. Art of Growing grass drops now follow Art of Growing's own pattern (only when that mod is installed): cutting live grass drops their fresh grass instead of vanilla dry grass, drop amounts scale with the plant's length (1–6) instead of a flat one, and mowing their dry grass leaves the eaten stub behind the way their scythe does. Players without Art of Growing see no change at all. Tool-rack display flipped 180° so a mower with a snow auger and chute hangs flush instead of poking the chute through the wall. A couple of notes on my linking choices: Floral Zones is a 7-region series with no single hub page, so I pointed it at the Cosmopolitan region (the "plants from all over" one) as the representative link. Biodiversity is also a suite — I linked the specific sub-mod your hitch actually targets, Biodiversity: Flowers and Grass (modid

v1.5.2 — Push Comes to Mow The mower's grown wheels. It no longer cuts in your hands — instead you right-click to set it down as a rideable push cart and mow the way a reel mower was actually meant to be used: by pushing it. The wagon wheels roll, the reel cage spins faster than the wheels (properly geared), turns give it a little roll, and it shears whatever's in front of it going forward or back — draining the blade exactly like the hand tool did. Every part, dye, and the blade's remaining durability carry through setting it down and packing it back up. Pick your cut mode on the tool wheel before you deploy, or tap the cut-mode key (F by default) to cycle Trim → Remove → Clear while you're pushing. It looks after itself, too. Run the blade down to nothing and it stops cutting and pops you off the seat so you notice the dull edge — the cart stays put, so you can read the tooltip and then repair, re-blade, or pack it up. And it refuses to go for a swim: steer it into water and it packs itself back into the held mower and sets you down on the bank instead of doing anything it shouldn't. Pack it back up any time with Sneak + empty-hand right-click. Recipe change: the shaft now also takes 6 iron bits (the wishbone yoke and the metal banding on the handle) and 2 plain cloth (the grip wraps) alongside the log — the wood type still carries all the way through to the finished mower. The in-game "Reel Mower: Some Assembly Required" guide is updated to match, and every step now lists a little shopping-list of exactly what it needs. New dependency: this update is built on Cartwright's Caravan — its push animations are what make the cart come alive as you walk. Big thanks to its author for such a clean, reusable foundation. Under the hood: a full server-compatibility pass (verified clean on a real dedicated server) and a solid dead-code cleanup. Non-breaking — every mower you already own keeps working; just right-click to roll it out.

v1.5.0 — Details Details Details Remember that secret from 1.4.9? It has a name now: Pain and Atonement. Running over a loose stone, flint, or ore lump while mowing now breaks it, drops whatever's inside, and costs a bonus chunk of blade durability on top of normal wear — because clipping actual rock is harder on the blade than cutting grass. It also flings a bit of damage back at you, because it's basically a rock bouncing off your shin and that's funny. The stone drop, player damage, and blade penalty are all independently togglable via the new server config. Also fixed for real this time: the stuck animation when attacking with the bare blade. 1.4.9's fix narrowed it down but didn't fully solve it — the actual culprit was the blade being tagged as a knife-type tool, which routes attacks through a skinning animation that expects class-side support to finish. Removed the knife designation and replaced the stab animation with a plain swing. Nothing else changed — durability, attack power, tool tier all untouched. Other things in this update: - Dowels now only accepts the mower (bladed or bladeless). If you're updating from an older version, break and replace any existing Dowels for the restriction to take effect.

|
Update v1.4.9 — Bug fixes (and something else) Fixed: holding the bare blade and attacking a creature could lock you in a stuck animation — couldn't attack again, couldn't even switch hotbar slots, only fixable by dropping the item or dying. Thanks to Findal_Falum for catching and reporting this one — still not entirely sure why you were swinging a lawn mower blade at a mob instead of running, but I respect the commitment. Took two tries to actually nail down (the first attempt didn't fully fix it), but it's properly sorted now. ...also snuck something else into this update. Not saying what it is. You'll figure it out. ๐ watch you head!
| 1.4.8 | reelmower | 257 | Jun 21st at 11:05 AM | ReelMower-1.4.8.zip | 1-click install | ||
|
Update v1.4.8 — Durability rebalance Big thanks to Findal_Falum for the detailed feedback on durability and resource cost. Two real changes came out of it: Durability raised 4x across every metal tier, for the assembled mower, the standalone blade, and the blade blank. The mower's pool was meaningfully behind the vanilla scythe at every tier before this — copper was under half the scythe's durability, and the gap got worse going up in tiers (steel was under 40%). This pushes every tier comfortably past the scythe instead of trailing behind it. A worn-out blade no longer just disappears when it snaps mid-mow. Previously the blade material was gone for good the moment durability hit zero — now the spent blade gets handed back to you at 0 durability instead, ready to take to a Grinding Wheel (with Grinding Wheel Rework installed) and sharpen back up, rather than smithing a brand new one from scratch. Also fixed a small inconsistency: black bronze durability didn't match between the assembled mower and the standalone blade. Now they agree.
| 1.4.7 | reelmower | 109 | Jun 21st at 4:04 AM | ReelMower-1.4.7.zip | 1-click install | ||
|
Update v1.4.7 — A real crash fix, and a recipe rebalance Fixed a server crash that could kick a player just for swinging a hammer at a placed frame. Confirmed via an actual crash report with a full stack trace — thank you to Sparklingtips for that. The nail-finding helper searched every one of a player's inventories, including their creative inventory, and that inventory's own internal check can throw an exception that was never handled, taking the whole interaction (and the player's connection) down with it. Now wrapped so one bad inventory can't crash the rest. Also fixed: the blade blank actually needed 4 ingots to smith, not the 2 every version of the guide has ever advertised. The old smithing pattern was sized for 4 ingots' worth of material by the game's own voxel math — reshaped it down to actually cost 2, matching the documented recipe instead of quietly doubling the material cost. Also fixed: the frame recipe needs two metal plates, but the guide said "a metal plate" — just a wording fix, the recipe itself was always correct.
| 1.4.6 | reelmower | 29 | Jun 21st at 3:29 AM | ReelMower-1.4.6.zip | 1-click install | ||
|
Update v1.4.6 — Multiplayer audit + a recipe fix Went looking specifically for what this mod needs to behave correctly on a real dedicated server, not from a bug report this time. Found and fixed: land claims weren't being respected. Swapping a blade, detaching a shaft, or hammer-assembling a frame all worked even inside someone else's protected claim, since those interactions fully replace vanilla's own logic for those specific cases — fixed for the mower and the Dowels peg, all five interaction points now check claim access properly. Also fixed: a recipe error that's been quietly showing up in the logs since v1.4.0. Vanilla actually has a 13th "aged" wood state on logs that this mod's shaft recipe was unintentionally matching but never supporting — fixed properly across the whole chain (shaft, bladeless frame, finished mower) instead of just patching around it. Spun up my own local dedicated server this time specifically to test real client-server multiplayer instead of just the integrated singleplayer server — assembled a frame, mowed, swapped blades back and forth, all clean over an actual network connection, not just locally. Big thanks to Zeriz for sticking with the Linux investigation through several rounds of log digging back on v1.4.5 — confirmed working there now, items and the handbook guide both showing up correctly and a successful test mow. That fix wouldn't have happened without a clean, reproducible report.

|
v1.4.5 — The actual Linux fix Turns out 1.4.4 didn't fix anything — confirmed by a Linux user retesting it, and by me directly opening the deployed zip and checking. My previous fix relied on a .NET API I assumed always wrote forward-slash paths; it doesn't, reliably, under the specific PowerShell setup that builds this mod. Replaced it with a packaging step that builds every file path manually and forces the correct format explicitly. This time I actually opened the resulting zip and checked every entry before calling it done — zero backslash paths, confirmed. Sorry for the runaround on this one. If you're on Linux and items still don't show up after updating to 1.4.5, please let me know — at that point I'd want fresh logs again.

|
Update v1.4.4 — Linux fix Found and fixed a real one: the mod could silently load with zero items, zero blocks, no handbook guide — on Linux specifically, every version back to the first release. Root cause was in how the release zip itself was being built, not the mod's code or content: it was packaged with Windows-style file paths internally, which Windows never minds but Linux's stricter zip reader couldn't read correctly, so every single JSON file in the mod silently failed to load while the bare code loaded fine. Should now work identically on both platforms. Also added: a dedicated "Reel Mower" tab in the creative inventory, so every part of the mod groups together instead of being scattered across General/Items/Tools. Plus two more small correctness fixes found during testing (not bug reports): a hold-vs-tap edge case on frame assembly, and a nail-tracking gap when a blade snaps mid-mow.

|
v1.4.3: Hammering it home Assembling the frame now uses a real hammer swing — turns out the swing animation only plays on an attack action (left-click), not an interact one (right-click), same as hitting an anvil. So: tap left-click on the placed frame, hammer in main hand, shaft in offhand, three times. No sneak needed anymore for this step. Also fixed: every interaction in this mod (assembly, blade install/removal, shaft detach) was silently pointing at a sound effect that never actually existed — fixed with the real vanilla anvil-hit sounds. And shaft detach now correctly gives back the same metal of nails you used (copper stays copper, steel stays steel) instead of always defaulting to iron.

|
v1.4.2: Hotfix (Multiplayer Crash) Found the real cause behind the mowing crashes that have been reported. The blade-spin network packet was crashing the server every single time anyone mowed with another player nearby — fixed by making its data format explicit instead of relying on automatic serialization that doesn't hold up in a dedicated server setup. If you've been crashing on right-click while holding the mower, this should fix it. Still chasing a second, separate crash (failed to assemble as a non-host player) — investigating, no fix yet.

v1.3.7 The mower can now be stored on New block: Dowels — a simple wall/tree-mounted peg pair. Craft from 2 sticks, place against any vertical surface or a tree trunk, then right-click with the mower in hand to hang it up (right-click again to take it back). One slot, oak-textured, a much smaller footprint than a full Tool Rack. The mower is not intended to hang on a vanilla Tool Rack — Dowels is a new, separate block, not a replacement for it. Fixed the mounted mower not sitting flush on the pegs from every facing, and tuned its position/angle on the Dowels for a cleaner, properly-seated look.

v1.3.5 — The Sound Update is live! The mower now plays a real looping sound while you mow. Starts the moment you push forward, cuts off the instant you stop or let go. Sound sits right at ground level where the blade meets the grass. Nearby players hear it too, coming from your position as you move — fully multiplayer. Blade breaking mid-mow correctly silences it for everyone. Cut width tightened by one block on each side. Multiplayer is in active testing — if anything sounds off (pun intended) on a server, drop a comment or send logs from

v1.3.3 — HotfixCritical fix: mower no longer destroyed when blade wears out. When the blade's durability reached zero, the entire mower was consumed — frame, wheels, shaft, all of it gone. This was unintended. The blade now snaps off instead, the bladeless frame stays in your hand, and the tool break sound plays so you know it happened. Seat a new blade with Sneak + right-click and you're back to work

Can you tag this as ai? I wish I didn't have to scroll all the way to the bottom of a very long description to see it was made with claude :/
im guessing its from all the mods i have but i dont see the guide page at all?
I can't help but notice this mod always gives one grass per grass tile mowed. I have a mod that increases the number of grass obtained per tile according to how tall the grass in question is. Namely, the mod is Duncan's Grass (yes, it still works on 1.22.3). Would you be able to make a compatibility patch for it, please? ๐ฅบ ๐
i will look at it after work tomorow
Thank you so much for considering it!!
Any word on this? I love the idea of this mod but would like to make sure I get the same yield from other ways of harvesting.
After updating to 1.6.1 getting this error in server-main.log, I believe this is harmless errors(did not test if recipes in those files worked), I believe it is just thinking that the comment lines are recipes that it is unable to read
after doing some testing and editing the files in question it seems to be caused by the // comment lines being in the root [ ] square brackets
I was able to fix the error when I moved the comments outside square brackets Ex: Don't mind the red highlights, notepad++ just does that when it thinks something is wrong
comments don't allow too many images so here is text example instead
From
line 1 [
line 2 //your comments
line 3 {recipe code}
line 4 ]
To this
line 1 //your comments
line 2 [
line 3 {recipe code}
line 4 ]
Sorry if my explanation/example seems condecending, not meant to be, I myself just like to have visual and written info when something is explained to me
Amazing mod man i just had a BALL playing with the snow blower lol but we did notice and i believe it might be the issue i was having with shafts, when you go to hammer the shaft in the hammer you need to use has to be fully repaired.. Atleast it is this way with the toolsmith mod running also
<3
i will look into that thank you for the kind words ๐งก
Hey TwistedSins โ thanks again for flagging this, and for the kind words. ๐
I went all-in on it: tested with Tool Smith installed in both single-player and on a dedicated multiplayer server, with the hammer worn down each time โ and in every case it hammers the shaft on and builds the mower just fine. I couldn't reproduce a hard "won't work" on any setup, so it looks like it's something specific to your world/mod mix rather than the mower itself.
Your report wasn't for nothing, though โ I found and fixed a real quirk along the way: the assembly wasn't wearing the hammer at all, so it stayed oddly pristine no matter how much you built with it. 1.6.1 fixes that โ the hammer now takes durability as you build, like any normal tool.
Two things that might be the actual culprit on your end:
In 1.6.0 you fit the wheels to the frame before the shaft (hold the wheelset and sneak + right-click or attack the bare frame first). Hammering a wheelless frame does nothing on purpose โ and that reads a lot like "the hammer isn't working." you need nails to assemble the mower shaft to the frame!
If it still happens after that, it may be another mod in your stack interacting.
If it keeps giving you trouble, shoot me your exact steps, your mod list, and a client-main.log from right when it happens โ with that I can chase down whatever's left. Appreciate you helping make it better either way. <3
keep an eye out for 1.6.1 thankyou!
v1.6.0 is causing this in server-main.log when loading into a world

Hey Vulkanic_J โ thank you for grabbing that log and posting it, that's genuinely the most useful kind of report. ๐
Good news first: it's harmless. Those errors are just the mod's repair recipes trying to register themselves for every metal in the game (silver, gold, and so on) when the heads only actually exist in 7. Nothing broke and no crafting is affected โ your valid recipes all still work โ but it's ugly log spam that shouldn't be there.
I traced it to a wildcard in the repair and craft recipes and rewrote them the explicit way, so all ~80 of those lines are gone. It'll go out in 1.6.1, which I'm sitting on for a day or two in case anything else turns up. Thanks again for taking the time โ this is exactly how good mods get better. <3
Thank you for making such a great mod!, glad this was harmless :)
Thank you!
Do you want to make a cultivator based on this mod?
way ahead of you but yes
Why I can't mow grass on plowed soil? Was that the plan?
Ha, fair question! The mower only really knows how to cut the wild stuff โ tallgrass, flowers, ferns, that kind of thing โ so it just doesn't have any handling for farmland tiles one way or the other. Honestly never even thought about the plowed-soil case, it's just never come up. Kinda funny you mention it though โ would be neat if this thing did something with soil one of these days, wouldn't it? No idea, just a lawn mower for now. Run it over the wild patches and it'll do its thing. ๐
hello is thre a posibility to donw grade this mod to 1.21.7 i would love to use it but mods taht i play with are 1.21.X only and 1.22.X none of them work
not possable sorry. out with the old in with the new.
well okay
The amount of detail in this mod is astounding to me for what could have been a very simple idea. I like the process of putting it together, makes it feel more rewarding when I finally have it assembled.
๐
I am not the best at 3d modeling so bare with me i created a work flow for ai and i to work the model so pumping out updates on the model will come faster now so expect some changes to the way the tool looks
New update says I need Cartwright Caravan V or something but I have the latest Cartwright Caravan update?
...Goodness.
I walk away to handle family matters for two days and you've updated it to this?!
I like what I see! And here I was going to report a small bug with the bed knife in 1.51 where it seemed to disappear!
yah i had the position of the bed blade in the wrong spot so i adjusted it along with some parts on the snowblower chute aswell.
Mod is having issues handling plants that spread as part of the Ecosystem - Flora Mod. Not sure if it's just a matter of needing to add the plants baby versions as they spread across the yard but the mower won't mow any plant from said mod in it's growing stages from what we observed.
Mod is a ton of fun though! I used it to clear a 50 x 50 for a building and it made me feel like a kid again so good job! ๐
i have a working patch for this look for it tonight!
Good catch โ you nailed the cause. Ecosystem - Flora's plants live entirely as growth-stage blocks (juveniles and flower/fern/grass "phases"), and their names didn't match anything my mower was looking for, so it walked right past them at every stage. Fixed in the next update โ added all of them, so it'll now mow that mod's plants and grasses through their whole life cycle, juveniles included. Only kicks in if you've got Ecosystem - Flora installed.
And glad you're having fun with it โ a 50ร50 clear sounds like exactly what it's for. Thanks for the solid report! ๐
working on a big crash stand by ill fix and update 1.5.5 is safe in the mean time.
1.5.7 is Safe fully tested and safe
does this work with Art of Growing (fork)? e.g. could I use this to mow to get the cut grass piles that mod creates?
let me look at the mod i should be able to put a hitch in
Good news โ I added Art of Growing support, so the next update lets the reel mower mow its grass. It only kicks in if you actually have AoG installed.
The hay piles I couldn't do the easy way, though. In Art of Growing those piles are made by its scythe specifically, not by the grass being cut โ so my mower can clear the grass, but it can't trigger that pile drop. Getting it to would mean rebuilding AoG's whole mowing system inside my mod, which would break every time that mod updates.
So for now: it mows the grass, just no hay piles. Wanted to be straight with you rather than have it work differently than you hoped. Thanks for asking!
okay, tested in a slightly-divergent mod setup;
installed mods: reelmower (and deps), AoG fork + all modules
Rando: picked a random mower from the creative menu (bismuth bronze + purpleheart + plain handles)
- against vanilla tall grass, correctly destroyed, no hay piles left behind (intended), eaten grass left behind in world, AoG hay made it into my inventory (1 per entity mowed, not in line with AoG grass drop patterns)
- against AoG dry tall grass, correctly destroyed, no hay piles, however no eaten grass patch remained, same inventory behavior as above
Crafto: hand-assembled a steel bladed mower with steel bed and birch shaft + plain handles
- against vanilla tall grass, behaved identically to rando
- against AoG dry tall grass, behavied identically to rando
AoG scythe: utilize the vanilla scythe (steel) to cut down tallgrass
- against vanilla tall grass, drops 6 fresh grass (not hay) per tallgrass, and leaves behind eaten vanilla grass
- against AoG dry tall grass, drops 6 hay per tallgrass, and leaves behind eaten vanilla grass (notably, alive, not the AoG drygrass)
AoG knife: utilize the vanilla knife (steel) to cut down tallgrass
- against vanilla tall grass, drops 1 fresh grass (not hay) per tallgrass, leaves behind eaten vanilla grass
- against AoG dry tall grass, drops 1 hay per tallgrass, leaves behind eaten vanilla grass (not AoG drygrass)
i'm not a mod author so i won't presume to tell you what to do. however, were i to make recommendations, they would be as follows;
- provide Fresh grass to mower loot table with AoG installed
- multiply drops based on grass length - AoG maxes out at 6
- find a way to institute eaten grass when mowing dry grass - while i only tested the maximum length of AoG drygrass, i must assume this behavior is replicated on the shorter drygrasses as well due to them not sharing an item ID with vanilla grass
Hey Joblerone โ really appreciate you digging into this and writing it all up, that's exactly the kind of report that's useful. I went ahead and did all three: live grass now drops Art of Growing's fresh grass, the drop counts scale with length up to 6, and mowing the dry grass leaves the eaten stub behind like the scythe does. It's all gated so it only kicks in when Art of Growing is actually installed.
One heads-up: I don't run Art of Growing myself, so I built this to match how your mod behaves rather than testing it in-game. That means I'm leaning on you here โ grab this update, put it through its paces, and let me know if the drops and the stubs look right or if anything's still off. Pushing it now so you can take a look. Thanks again!
round two of testing; mods are identical to before, with the exception of installing the new patch. re-using the same world from prior test for maximal consistency.
Rando: same one as prior
- vanilla: behaves as expected - returns vanilla eaten grass, appropriately returns 6 fresh grass per grass cut
- AoG: Tall dry grass converts to eaten dry grass (not in line with AoG behavior - AoG returns vanilla eaten grass with scythe + knife) - appropriately returns 6 hay per grass cut.
Crafto: same one as prior
- vanilla: identical to rando
- AoG: identical to rando
Scythe: same one as prior
- vanilla: behavior unchanged
- AoG: behavior unchanged
Knife: same one as prior
- vanilla: behavior unchanged
- AoG: behavior unchanged
mildly unrelated note, i did drive both mowers back over the cut grass to see if they would obliterate the eaten grass tiles, but they did not. this is well-considered.
it appears the AoG eaten dry grass is only used for the visuals when shearing, as it converts to a vanilla eaten grass when the grass piles are removed. but, this patch makes this mod fully compatible with AoG progression, so the dry grass "inconsistency" is not a huge problem since the resources are still harvestable and drop with appropriate freshness/dryness.
much obliged, and thank you for working with me. looking forward to mowing my fields with impunity!
bout to put that hoe!! out of work aswell
shhhh

Does this work with hammers made with the toolsmith mod?
when i place the frame down and left click it 3 times with a toolsmith hammer with the shaft in my hand nothing happens
do you have nails in your pocket??
Yep, works fine with Toolsmith hammers โ they still count as a hammer to my mod, so nothing special needed there. Like I mentioned, the thing to check is nails: you need a stack of metal nails & strips in your inventory for the frame to come together. Hold the hammer, shaft in your offhand, and left-click the placed frame 3 times with nails on you and it should assemble. Let me know if it still won't go after that!
it works! forgot the nails, brain stopped reading after the guide says you need a hammer the frame and the shaft. cool mod, like the little detail when you go over rocks :D
Thanks for the help
๐งก
You have made some incredible strides with this! I'm excited to see this in action.
Yeah I mean I kind of made it for myself and then it just in the beginning it just started to look good it really felt good and the idea was sound so I've went a little outside my comfort zone and posted it on here to see what people thought And keep in mind I'm just the conductor the AI is doing all the coding but as far as transformers and the way things physically are orientated inside of the 3D world I'm responsible for all of that but I've got some things to add to it still I don't know I love it it's fun to do it's fun to see what can be done I really appreciate the comment it means a lot!
im guessing this is the wrong shaft but unsure how to craft the actual one needed ive looked all over and there is no real good updated step by step on how to make this </3
please use the newest version! that is old!!!!
Hm. If you don't have the grindstone how do you repair the blade? I can't take it to a smithing table and rework it, sadly, like some other materials.
Hey Raek โ good question, and this one's intentional design rather than an oversight.
The reel blade is a finished precision cutting edge, not raw stock, so it's deliberately not reworkable at a smithing table/anvil like plates or ingots are. Repair happens at a grinding wheel (via the Grinding Wheel Rework mod), and that's gated behind mechanical power โ a windmill or other power source โ on purpose. A blade you can maintain forever is something you earn once you've got power running, rather than something handed to you turn one.
Until you're there, the move is to lean on copper. Copper blades are dirt cheap โ when one wears down, just forge a fresh one and pop it in; treat them as disposable workhorse blades. You never need a grindstone to keep mowing.
Where the grinding wheel really earns its keep is iron and up, where re-smithing a worn blade starts costing real metal. At that tier, sharpening the same blade over and over is the long-term play. So the progression is basically: copper = cheap and disposable early on, grindstone = sharpen-and-keep once you've got power and you're running iron+ blades for the long haul.
Hope that clears it up โ happy mowing!
Ah, that's fair!
Might want to remove the ability to heat it in the forge, that's what threw me off so much since...surprisingly my world has been very, very lacking in the stones to make a grindstone so far and I wanted to give it a try. I'll keep that detail in mind, thank you~.
Hello,
I installed your mod on my server and noticed it conflicts with the Pet AI mod. Instead of installing the Reel blade, it pet the Bladeless reel mower. Can you please change the blade placement or fix this somehow?
I'll look into this but I'm not making any guarantees
Hey Wolfram โ thanks for the report, and for running the mod on your server!
I dug into this one with Pet AI's source. The good news/bad news is it's not actually Pet AI grabbing the click โ petting in Vintage Story is a vanilla interaction that fires on a creature, and the game ray-traces and picks whichever it hits first: the nearest creature, or the block. My strong hunch is that a tamed pet standing on or right in front of the placed mower is "winning" the right-click, so you pet the animal instead of reaching the mower behind it.
Could you check a couple things so I can confirm and point a fix at the right spot?
If that's the cause, I've already got a compatibility fix in mind (handling the blade install at the item level so it wins the click even with a critter in the way). I just want to test it against Pet AI before I push it so I don't ship something half-baked. Let me know what you find and I'll get it sorted!
Cheers.
Hello, I am a player of this server.
I also tried to test the methods described above. Tamed animals, like ordinary animals, were not on the lawn mower itself or nearby
When trying to move the lawn mower further to another location, the result is the same.
This happens according to the assembly step 5 guide, where you need to add a blade to the lawn mower to complete it. I didn't try to remove the blade.
Is it possible to make all the other parts of the lawn mower the same as described in the assembly guide step 4 so that the player can take them in his left hand and a hammer in his right and hit the lawn mower itself to complete it?
Thanks for the reports โ and Mr_Posey, thanks for the left-click suggestion.
Full honesty up front: I installed Pet AI plus a creature mod, tamed a pet, parked it
right on top of the mower, and tried both mouse buttons โ and I couldn't get it to
misbehave once. So I can't reproduce it directly. But here's what's actually going on
and what I've done about it.
It isn't the blade, and it isn't a bug in the mower itself โ and it isn't Pet AI doing
anything wrong either. It's how Vintage Story routes clicks: whatever is under your
crosshair gets the interaction. When you set the mower on the ground and go to click it,
if there's an interactable creature between you and it โ most likely a tamed pet
following you, since Pet AI pets trail their owner โ the creature grabs the click.
Right-click "pets" it instead of seating the blade. Any mod that parks a right-clickable
creature at your feet shadows a ground interaction the same way; it's the game's
interaction model, not something specific to this mod.
What I changed for the next update: you can now seat the blade (and install a bed knife)
with LEFT-click / attack, exactly like hammering the frame together โ a second path that
doesn't compete with the right-click pet interaction. Right-click still works too, so
nothing you're used to breaks.
In the meantime the quick fix is on your side: move your pet away from the mower while you
assemble, or use Pet AI's "stay" command so it isn't crowding the spot. That alone should
clear it up.
If it still happens after the update, please send your full mod list, your Vintage Story
version, and a server-debug.log from when it occurs (in the server's Logs folder) โ with
that I can pin down the exact trigger. Appreciate the patience.
I'm not understanding what blade blank is and what bed knife is. Tried searching in Handbook and in the anvil and I'm not seeing things by those names.
Interesting, that doesn't show in the handbook if I search Reel or Bed Knife, nor does it appear if I use a hot iron ingot on an anvil
first off i would like to state the i do appreciate the fast paced updates and fixes.
when i download the 1.5.0 file and load into my world all things reel mower are gone. no mower, no dowel, no handbook entries. it acts just like if the mod isnt installed or even active. using 1.4.9 all is good and fine.
i dont know if this is only for me, or if i am missing something
Sorry for the stupid question, but did you remove the old mod first?
i did uninstall the older version before trying the game
after installing the newer update for the mod (1.5.1) it all seems to work just fine, so i have no idea why it wouldnt work previously
i am in a self hosted MP world
maybe its just for my uses but the mower blade seems to break too fast. though it may be slower the scythe seems to be the better way to gather bulk grass. even using iron blades the durability drains very fast. the scythe is able to get more grass for a lower tier of metal blade. it also appears that the durability goes down even when it isnt cutting grass and you are just pushing it. i would like it if the blade would become "broken" or "worn" and needs repaired after the durability is depleted in stead of it just out right breaking and getting sent to the aether. it seems kind of like a waste of metal, unless you have tons already. it would also be nice or better if you were able to "sharpen" the blades like a real reel mower to restore durability or something of the sorts and just have it stop cutting when the blade durability hits 0. having higher tiers of metal would mean less sharpening so i believe it would still be worth it to upgrade to better tiers later.
a cool touch that i think could be added would be durability damage when running over a stone on the ground
other then those, i think it could be a very cool mod and tool but it is just too resorce heavy for anything but kinda mid-late to late game
Really appreciate the detailed writeup โ this is exactly the kind of feedback that's actually actionable, not just "it feels bad." Went through every point.
Durability: you were right, and the numbers backed it up. The mower's pool was meaningfully behind the vanilla scythe at every tier, worse at the high end (steel was under 40% of the scythe's durability). Just shipped a 4x increase across every metal tier โ should feel like a completely different tool now for bulk clearing.
The blade getting "sent to the aether" โ also fixed, and this one mattered a lot to me too. A worn-out blade now gets handed back to you at 0 durability instead of just vanishing. It's immediately sharpenable at a Grinding Wheel (if you've got Grinding Wheel Rework installed) instead of needing to smith a whole new one. That's effectively the "sharpening to restore durability" system you asked for โ turns out the pieces for it already existed, they just weren't connected to blade breakage specifically.
One practical heads-up on that: sharpening takes longer the more durability you're restoring, so don't let a blade ride all the way down to near-zero before taking it in โ you'll be standing at the Grinding Wheel a while if you do. Topping it off earlier, before it's fully spent, is going to be a lot faster in practice.
The rest of what you raised โ stopping at 0 instead of snapping off, and durability loss from walking over stones โ I'm not ruling either of those out. Nothing in your comment is off the table. The "stop instead of break" idea in particular is worth real thought, since the current snap-to-bladeless behavior is pretty baked into how the frame/blade separation works, so I want to make sure I get it right rather than rush it. Sitting with it for now, not saying no.
Thanks again for taking the time to write all that out โ this is the kind of report that actually moves the mod forward.
thank you for the quick responce and change. it feels a lot better now.
i am having the problem of i am unable to sharpen the blades on the grinding wheel. i have tried right click, shift + right click. i tried this with and without something in my offhand
edit: nevermind i didnt read closely enough. after installing the grinding wheel rework it sharpens.
i did run into an issue though. if the blade is in your hand and you go to attack something with it you are stuck in an animation, cant attack, and you are unable to switch off of it whether by the scroll wheel or by using the number keys. to fix this you have either throw the blade on the ground or die
Fixed! dont hit rocks just saying.....
Oh great dear mod maker, we're hosting a server with your mod (as one of 188 so a potential conflict is very possible). We just updated to 1.4.4 thinking it could potentially fix our issue, however, the handbook loads the guide (the guide was working on 1.4.3) but it doesn't load any of them items and they don't appear to be craftable. Let me know what log files would be useful <3
i need you to test test test
MP at this point is my top priority
if you can send logfiles via google drive link that would be nice server and clients please!!!
Thanks for flagging this โ and good news, your symptom (handbook guide loads, but no items/crafting) is a different shape than another report I'm chasing (Linux packaging bug, just fixed properly in 1.4.5), so this is worth treating as its own thing rather than assuming it's the same issue.
With 188 mods in play, a conflict is genuinely plausible. Could you grab a few specifics:
1. What platform are you and your server on โ Windows or Linux?
2. In your client-debug.log or server-debug.log, a search for "reelmower" (case-insensitive) โ specifically looking for whether the item/block classes register and whether any Harmony patches report a conflict.
3. A search for "Error" or "Warning" in the same logs around when the world loads.
4. Does a brand new world (just to test, not your real save) show the same behavior, or is it specific to your existing world/save?
That'll help me tell a real conflict apart from something mod-specific.
Alright, so, handbook issue seems to be solved with 1.4.5. However, when placing the mower frame and trying to attach the shaft this error occurs:

Also - As a side note, not sure if this is an issue with the guide being wrong or the recipe but the smithing recipe for the blade blank is ~4 ingots when the guide says 2 ingots
pure gold let me look into this
Work around: Have nails in your inventory - I missed this being specified in the guide since it's not mentioned super directly.
Probably just need to add gracefull handling if the nails aren't found in the users inventory and display an on-screen message or add them as their own step after the shaft is attached
Additionally:
This is a compat thing but xskills applies a quality to the mower blade and it affects the displayed durability but when putting the blade on the mower it doesn't keep the improved durability
Thank you for that crash report โ full stack trace made this an easy, concrete fix instead of a guessing game. Found it: a helper that searches your inventories for nails was also touching your creative inventory, and that inventory's own internal Count check throws an exception that was never caught, crashing the whole interaction. Fixed in the version going up shortly (v1.4.7) โ confirmed on my end with a real test: full hammer assembly, 3/3 hits, no crash.
One thing worth being upfront about: with 188 mods running, if something else comes up that doesn't come with a clean error message or stack trace like this one did, narrowing it down is going to be a lot harder than it was this time. Both issues you've hit so far turned out to be bugs in this mod specifically, not conflicts with anything else you're running โ but I can't promise that'll always be the case. If anything else shows up, the more specific you can be (exact steps, a fresh crash log if there is one), the better shot I have at actually fixing it instead of guessing.
Appreciate you testing this โ once v1.4.7 is up, would be great if you could give the hammering and the smithing recipe another go and let me know how it holds up.
We got this mod out of curiosity, or rather the server host was interested in using it as a way to mow his flower fields easier.

Here's what we noted:
When I (non-host) tried to assemble the thing, I'd get kicked by throwing an exception at the server. Tried twice, without fail, kicked.
Had the host assemble it without issue, though we noted the whole nails step didn't really do anything, no nails were consumed, nor did the hammer hit the thing 3 times.
Eitherway, once the mower was complete, the host went to try said mower on the flower field (all vanilla flowers) and instantly crashed. - Tried changing the mode, thinking maybe that was the cause. Still crashed.
We're on the latest version of the game, modded, but we didn't really use any modded materials to make the mower or use it on any modded items.
Console message when host tried to use the mower:
ok let me dive into this and see what we got gimme a few
Found it โThe blade-spin packet was relying on automatic serialization that breaks on a dedicated server setup, throwing every single time anyone mowed with another player around. This is almost certainly the same thing another player reported that I could never pin down without a server crash log โ so genuinely, thank you for this.
v1.4.2 is up now with that fixed.
Still chasing the other one though โ your non-host player getting kicked while trying to assemble the mower. That's a separate bug and I don't have a stack trace for it yet (only got one for the mowing crash). If you can grab that console message the same way, that'd let me actually fix it instead of guessing.
Thank you for the quickness to respond and the fix! We'll be testing the new update in a few, and we'll attempt the non-host exception again. I'll reply to this post if it happens and with the console error message
i havent animated a hammer hit phisicly yet so you wont see that happen yet, it should consume nails tho, stright out of your pockets.
Could I suggest that you make it just another extra step? What I mean is, you shift + right click to add the wooden frame, then you swap the hammer into your main hand, and nails onto your off hand. - From there could perhaps recycle the hammer animation. I thought of how we have to hammer a hot iron anvil and weld it together with borax, you could do something akin to that?
Of course it's just a suggestion, feel free to do it how you see fit :D
im working on this RN looking into it
check out 1.4.3 !!!
Things seem to be working now! Thank you :D
10,000 kisses if you can make a 1.20.12 version (I knoow, but I won't update my game version right now b/c several of the mods I use are not updated yet.)
If you can't it's cool. This would help so much with feeding my gluttonous piglets. All they do is eat wtf
Ha, I appreciate the offer โ and I get not wanting to update when your other mods aren't ready for it yet, that's a completely reasonable position to be in.
Realistically though, a 1.20.12 build isn't something I can do as a quick "lower the version number" change. This mod leans hard on systems that are part of how the game's modding tools work right now in 1.22 โ things like multi-dimensional crafting variants, the way item attributes and JSON patches resolve, and some deeper hooks I patch into for the ground-placement mechanics. Backporting wouldn't be a tweak, it'd basically mean rebuilding large parts of the mod against an older, more limited version of the modding API and then maintaining two separate versions forever after that. For a one-person hobby project, that's not really sustainable โ every future update would need to be built and tested twice.
So no kisses collected today, sadly โ but I hear you on the piglets. If your other mods catch up to 1.22 down the line, the door's open whenever that happens.
Dammit! And I've applied lipstick!
Totally understandable though, definitely will give this a rip when I update. Thanks for your work!
Does this work on Linux? My friend and I have all the same mods, he is on Windows while I am on Linux, works fine for him but does not show up at all for me in game. I have also removed every mod except this one and it still will not show up. Not sure where else to look as it does show up in the logs and doesn't seem to throw any errors.
Thanks for the detailed report โ that's a real head-scratcher, and I want to actually look at evidence rather than guess.
Could you grab your client-debug.log (not just client-main.log) from %APPDATA%/VintagestoryData/Logs/ (or the Linux equivalent, usually ~/.config/VintagestoryData/Logs/) right after a session where this happens? "No errors" at the default log level doesn't rule out asset-loading issues โ those often only show up at the debug verbosity, not the one most people glance at.
Also: what exact game version are you running, and is the mod definitely showing in your Mods folder with a fresh copy (not an old cached one from before you removed the other mods)?
I am on game version 1.22.3, for your mod I had installed 1.2.9 orginally, didn't notice that it wasnt showing up until yesterday, installed 1.4.1, 1.3.4, and 1.4.0 in an attempt to see if it was a specific version that wasn't working, all versions did not work for me.
The mod is in there, and it 100% consistently does not work for me. I have tested creative, loaded survival and created a new survival, does not show the logbook guide or any items related to the mod.
This is the log that I got from a world that I just created with only this mod in the mods folder.

Thank you for this โ genuinely useful, and I can see your mod's actual DLL loading fine and the Harmony patches applying successfully. That's real progress.
But I need a bit more to actually pin this down. This log slice cuts off right around game launch, before you'd actually be in a world checking creative inventory or the handbook โ so it doesn't yet show whether the mod's *content* (items, recipes, handbook pages) loaded correctly, just that the *code* did. Those are two separate systems in this engine, and it's possible one works while the other doesn't.
Could you do two things:
1. Search your full client-debug.log (not just this excerpt) for "reelmower" (case-insensitive) and paste every matching line โ there should be a notification line confirming the item class registered that isn't in what you sent.
2. Try the same fresh-world test on v1.4.3 specifically (the current version) โ you tested 1.2.9/1.3.4/1.4.0/1.4.1, but not the latest, and there's a real chance something changed since.
Appreciate you sticking with this โ a clean, fully reproducible "doesn't load at all" report is rare and valuable to actually fix instead of guess at.
I attempted to get more out of client-debug.log and this was still all I could get related to your mod, since I couldn't get more out of debug, I looked into client-main.log just incase, here are the results for both.
edit: I also did try the newest version right before your response, still no luck.

Your client-main.log actually had exactly what I needed โ my bad for pointing you at the debug log first. That registration line logs at a level ("Notification") that goes to client-main.log, not client-debug.log, so I sent you hunting in the wrong file.
Good news from what you sent: everything on the code side is working perfectly, even on v1.4.3, even on Linux.
[Notification] [ReelMower] [Client] ItemReelMower class registered. VS 1.22.3.0
[Notification] [ReelMower] BlockEntityGroundStorage.OnPlayerInteractStart patched successfully
[Notification] [ReelMower] CollectibleObject.OnHeldAttackStart patched successfully
[Notification] [ReelMower] [Client] Network channel 'reelmower' registered with spin packet handler.
Class registration, both Harmony patches, the network channel โ all fine, no errors, clean session start to finish. That actually rules out a whole category of possible causes (mod not loading, code crashing silently, etc.) and narrows this down to the JSON content specifically โ items, blocks, recipes, handbook pages not making it into the game even though the code handling them is running fine.
One more specific thing, if you don't mind: could you search both client-debug.log and client-main.log (case-insensitive) for "Error" and "Warning" this time, instead of "reelmower"? If something in the mod's JSON content is silently getting rejected, that's where it'd show up, and it would point me straight at the actual file instead of guessing.
Really appreciate you sticking with this one โ most reports stop at "doesn't work," and you've actually given me enough to keep narrowing it down.
Found it. Wasn't a code bug at all โ it was the release zip itself. I was packaging it with Windows-style file paths inside the zip, which Windows never cares about but Linux's stricter zip reader couldn't resolve into real folders. So every JSON file in the mod (items, blocks, recipes, the handbook) was silently failing to load while the bare code loaded fine โ which is exactly what your logs showed. This affected every version back to the very first release, not anything specific to what you tried.
v1.4.4 is up now with the packaging fixed. Should work identically to Windows this time โ let me know if it does.
Really appreciate you sticking with this through several rounds of log digging. This one would've been very hard to find without a clean, reproducible report like yours.
This is the ai's response when i asked, how confident are you it worked on a scale from 1 -10
This settles it โ I checked nine other mods from your actual Mods folder, including compiled C# mods like CarryOn (similar build setup to ours), totaling several thousand zip entries between them. Zero backslash entries anywhere. Every single one of them used proper forward-slash paths. ReelMower was the only mod doing this wrong.
That bumps my confidence up meaningfully โ call it 9, not 7. This isn't just "a theory that fits the symptoms" anymore; it's the one concrete, measurable difference between our mod and the exact mods Zeriz confirmed work fine on their own Linux machine. The remaining 1 point of doubt is just that I still can't watch it succeed on Zeriz's actual machine myself.
The ai is wrong, it still doesn't work, but I can at least point in what may be the right direction, the cache that is generated is still generating with the backslashs creating individual jsons like:
assets\reelmower\blocktypes\dowels.json
Instead of creating the filepath
You were right and I was wrong โ my last fix didn't actually change anything, and I should have verified that myself before calling it fixed. Appreciate you checking the actual cache output; that's exactly the kind of detail that catches a problem like this.
Root cause of why it didn't work: I used a .NET API I assumed would always write forward-slash paths, but it turns out it doesn't reliably do that under the specific PowerShell runtime building this mod. v1.4.5 replaces that with a packaging step that forces the correct path format explicitly instead of trusting the library to do it โ and this time I actually opened the resulting zip and checked every entry myself before calling it fixed. Zero backslash paths now.
Sorry for the runaround. Once 1.4.5 is up, would really appreciate one more test from you.
Didn't do any in depth testing, but the items and logbook guide show up now. Spawned a mower and a blade, and cut grass, so seems to be working fine. I will be playing multiplayer tomorrow so I can kill 2 birds with one stone, will comment if I run into anymore issues. Thanks for fixing it.
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Is the Wildgrass mod supported?
i will look into this mod.
Should be supported now as of v1.3.9 โ added compatibility for Wildgrass's grass types (switchgrass, bermuda grass, bluegrass, etc.), so the mower should trim/remove them same as regular tallgrass.
I don't run Wildgrass myself, so this hasn't been tested in an actual game yet โ built it from reading the mod's data, not from watching it work. If you've got it installed, would appreciate you giving it a try and letting me know what happens (works fine / doesn't cut it / cuts it but acts weird, etc.) โ that'll help me confirm it's solid or fix it if not.
Thank you!
๐งก
The client keeps crashing when I right-click while holding the steel (probably the same with other variants) mower.
Hey, thanks for the report โ and sorry, that's on us, we should've told you exactly which file to grab in the first place.
The log we ask for by default (
client-debug.log) doesn't actually capture crashes/exceptions, only general debug noise. To see what's really going on we need one of these instead:client-main.log(same folder:%APPDATA%\VintagestoryData\Logs\), orcrashreport-*.txtfile that usually gets generated right next to it when the game crashes, orAlso โ does it crash with the bladeless frame too, or only once a blade's actually installed? That'll help narrow it down fast.
Appreciate you sticking with us on this, multiplayer testing is exactly what's catching stuff like this.
Interesting! I think I will give this a try-while the scythe is nice and all, it does have a touch of jank when it comes to cutting and requires some careful aim. This? I can actually tend to my property in-game and save the scythe for other things.
Now I just need an allergy mod, and my nostalgia will be in full swing.
I'm making a mod for grass growth.
You're making a mod for a lawn mower.
Universe balance ๐ค
this at four AM at four AM. I start laughing my ass off to this right here ๐ ๐งก
sleep balance shattered ๐คก
All throughout my childhood when mowing my grandparent's lawn I used one of these.
I remember the hot spring and summer days, often when I'd take a break to go get a drink, I'd lean the handle against a tree.
When I was done for the day and feeling proud of my work to help out my grandparents, I'd lean the handle against the toolshed.
When my grandpa was teaching me how to be safe using it he said, "we carefully lean it against something, don't want the handle just laying on the ground. It'll rot when it gets wet and the bugs get hungry."
We even had little wooden doles/pegs fixed to the wall in the shed that kept the handle upright.
We even planted a mighty oak from a small acorn in the front yard, just so we'd have something to lean it up against.
He even once built an entire house with his bare hands, so he'd have something to lean it against.
My heart is breaking in two.
Thanks for your contributions though!
i will make it happen for you if thats what you want it will take some time tho b/c i will hafto set up all the transformers then bake them into the mod, this i will hafto do myself <3
Thanks for the suggestion! I did spend a while trying to make this work.
Turns out the game doesn't really let blocks "lean" against a wall out in the open โ anything mounted on a wall has to actually be attached to a wall block right next to it. That's a problem for the mower, since you need to be able to set it down anywhere to swap blades, not just next to a wall. I could've faked the leaning look, but it wouldn't really be leaning on anything, just a trick, and I didn't want to ship that.
So instead I made a small dedicated block called Dowels โ just two pegs, made from 2 sticks, mountable on any wall or tree trunk. Right-click it with the mower in hand and it hangs right there. That's the spot it's meant for. As a bonus it also happens to work on a regular Tool Rack if you've already got one, but Dowels is the real answer to what you were asking for. Ground placement out in the open still works the same as always.
Hope that's a good middle ground โ let me know what you think.
Oh my gosh.
I posted that hoping to get a laugh from you, go to sleep, wake up and check this a few hours later and.
Wow, just wow! You're a whole 'nother level of awesome in my book.
I'm just wrapping my head around this still in a few hours you managed to investigate, test, realize what is and isn't doable, then made a middle ground compromise and just. wow.
I love it, and thank you very much! Some day when I ready to try learning to make mods, I'll try to carry the same spirit with me in my work. Also thanks for teaching me how to spell "Dowels" correctly. My mind was set on doles for some reason, makes no sense now that I said it out loud.
๐งก
are the frame and shaft iron only?or can they be made out of other metal as well?
The frame is iron only โ it needs to be rigid enough to hold the blade under load. The shaft is wood. The metal variation is in the blade itself, which is where the seven tiers come in.
ok
thanks
1.4.1 is live with Shaft changes go check it out!
thanks on this one
tested in creative since i don't have that much iron but 'im using Bronze Meteoric Mining ( cuz' i don't have all day to look for iron)
that's why i asked if it's iron only
Wondering if this will get rid of flowers aswell?
That would be so handy since the scythe doesnt seem to want to.
done good idea!

The scythe has two cutting options. One that leaves a bit of grass, while the other cuts the grass completely. Would love to see the same options with this mowing mod.

the idea is great, I really hope that you will succeed. Good luck Bro

love this more since its efficient, hopefully you need to smith the parts in the next update instead of having 4 bars of ingot.
This will be addressed soon enough. Once I have it working like we want, I'll work on the crafting recipe and placing it on the ground, or up against a tree or wall. Thank you for the positive feedback! ๐งก
