This mod adds one-voxel-thick veneers, cut from debarked logs with a frame saw, so you don't have to use an entire debarked log every time you want to add some decorative wood touches to a chiseled block. It also adds unique, more figured variants of each wood type as veneers. (I cheated a little on the figured variants; some of these are different names for the same type of figure, some aren't official terms for anything, some aren't natural features of the wood grain, etc. Woodworking people, please don't kill me.)

This is a content mod which combines various skills from the early to early-intermediate tutorials available on the official VS wiki. Like all content mods, it's just a pile of JSON files. I have next to no coding experience, and still knocked most of this out over a weekend with nothing but the game itself, a basic text editor, and the VS modeling creator. (Certified LLM free!) If you're at all interested in making your own mods, even if it seems intimidating, try running through the guides and tutorials yourself!

My thanks to the VS discord's mod development channel, especially KDLynch and Brady_The, who were a tremendous help when I got stuck.

NEW:

  • live edge "slab tops" (not to be confused with vanilla slabs) that can be made with 4x4 redwood logs, resin, and beeswax
  • compatibility with Wood Stain, a mod that adds stains you can apply to various wooden blocks; you can now make stained veneers from stained debarked logs
    • Warning: Wood Stain adds a ton of new blocks. Veneer also adds a ton of new blocks. The two together add a frankly absurd number of new blocks.

Possible future additions include:

  • additional orientations (esp. for figured variants) Done!
  • 4-voxel-thick redwood live-edge slabs Done! More types of live edge slabs may or may not be added later
  • stone inlay sheets for polished stone Making this a separate mod with Veneer as a dependency, so people can choose not to blow up their computers with two billion extra blocks
  • inlay sheets for things that don't have chiselable block forms, such as mineral pigments, gems, and crushed seashell These will go in the separate addon too
  • shiny and solid-color variants shiny not worth it currently, solid color will be covered by enamel in the separate addon
  • metal foil sheets with a smithing recipe (though currently there are other mods that already accomplish the same thing) Guess where this is going. That's right, in the addon mod.
  • a simplified, lighter weight method for getting just one type of stained veneer in basic colors, enabled if Wood Stain isn't installed
  • slightly fancier frame saw texture
  • Spanish lang file, more if quality translations are possible
  • better tiling for figured variants?

Possible far future additions include:

  • replacing the current figured veneer recipe with figured logs that will sometimes drop randomly when cutting down trees; these will give 16 figured veneer sheets when debarked and framesawed, same as standard debarked logs, but they will be rarer
  • making Sinker Bald Cypress and Ancient Sinker Aged logs that will generate at the bottom of lakes, rivers, and bays, instead of generating in trees
  • making Rift-Touched Very Aged Logs that generate in ruins (or temporally unstable areas?)
  • making Spalted Rotten Logs that generate in forests alongside regular rotten debarked logs?
  • the ability to use a frame saw on a placed debarked log
  • adding a mechanically powered saw that returns 32 veneer sheets instead of 16 (or adjusting things so a frame saw returns 8 two-voxel-thick veneers and a mechanical saw returns 16 one-voxel-thick veneers)
  • multiple figured variants of each wood type (not hard, but tedious, mod-bloating, and not a top priority) nope, not doing this

ATTENTION to the 50 or so people who downloaded the first (1.21) version: The fancy aged veneer has a new texture, and its old texture has been re-used as the very aged veneer. The new version will not automatically remap these veneers. Be aware that anything you made with a spalted aged veneer is going to change. Additionally, the 2x2 redwood veneer has been removed entirely. It wasn't craftable in the first version, but if you were playing with it in creative, that will also break. Apologies for the inconvenience; I hope to get the hang of remapping patches to avoid these issues in the future.

(note that there are no very rotten veneers at this time)

Changelog:

- Spalted Aged Veneer ("block-woodveneer-aged-figured" and "block-woodveneer-aged-bookmatched") is now Ancient Sinker Aged Veneer and has a new texture. Its old texture has been re-used for Rift-Touched Very Aged Veneer ("block-woodveneer-veryaged-figured" and "block-woodveneer-veryaged-bookmatched")

- added missing recipe to turn vertical plain veneer back into horizontal plain veneer

- added missing recipe to turn bookmatched figured veneer back into figured veneer

- durability cost of using the frame saw to make plain veneer has been reduced from 16 to 8

- amount of figured veneer created per debarked log has been raised from 4 to 8

- removed 2x2 redwood veneer (which was only accessible in creative); future updates will hopefully introduce a new type of block to replace and improve 2x2 redwood veneer functionality

- added more rotation options to both plain and figured veneer, each accessible as a distinct item for ease of adding to chiseled blocks

- altered framesaw recipe to use boards instead of support beams

- added Very Aged and Rotten veneers (including figured variants Rift-Touched Very Aged Veneer and Spalted Rotten Veneer)

- slightly altered Sinker Bald Cypress texture

First release candidate of my first mod. Let me know if anything explodes.

Currently implemented:

  • craftable framesaw in the same standard metals as a regular saw, placeable in ground storage, on tool racks, and on shelves. 1/2 wall ground storage is deliberate, but taller items may clip through it.
  • veneers in all standard wood types debarked logs are available in except for rotten/mossy/very aged. Come in standard (uses the vanilla debarked log texture, with two available orientations) and figured (uses custom textures aside from 2x2 redwood, can be bookmatched horizontally). Each of the four variants is a separate item for ease of adding to chiseled blocks.

Schmoopy Yeah, I'm afraid it's meant for chiseling primarily! So for instance, I made veneer-decorated floors in one of my bases by turning my wooden plank floors into chiseled blocks and adding veneers to them. The chiseled floors work the same as any other floor; you can put whatever you want on them. But you can't just place the veneer sheet down and use that as a floor. (I mean, you could, but it won't have ground storage. Could be useful for preventing rust monster spawns maybe, same as placing rocks?)

There are some nice mods out there for adding blocks with different flooring patterns, such as More Flooring Patterns, but there does seem to be a gap in the ecosystem re: carpets and similar placeable floor decorations that don't interfere with floor utility. Even the vanilla carpets are uncraftable. That might be a cool project for a different mod! I bet it wouldn't be too hard. I don't have time to get to that right now, but maybe you could give it a shot? If you do, please come back and tell me so I can try it out! And if I do get around to making a carpet mod myself, I'll be sure to tag you.

i was gonna use this but i realized the veneer is still a "block" and u cant place stuff on top of it like carpet

quihyr Alright, recipes are updated! Among other things.

snailchimera , Mar 24th at 9:01 PM

quihyr Yep, I caught that too. Planks or boards might be a good call, especially since beams are kinda expensive for what the frame saw does.

The current version is also missing a recipe to turn vertical plain veneer back into horizontal plain veneer, which is something I caught about 10 minutes after I published.

quihyr, Mar 24th at 4:58 PM

Just did some testing, and I like that the mod is equipped for texture pack mods that change vanilla wood.
Also I think your plan for a 1 and 2 voxel vineer would be a neat addition.

A suggestion for the vineer frame saw frame recipe, as it currently can be crafted with all (even metal) beams.
Perhaps you could exclude those by adding a skipVariants in the recipe.json, or alternatively, use planks?

snailchimera , Mar 23rd at 10:28 PM

quihyr Thanks! I hope you enjoy it. I'm open to suggestions too, though I can't promise anything.

As a woodworker, this is very interesting. Cannot wait to see how this mod progresses! 😁
