Ithania Canned Goods

Prepare today. Preserve for tomorrow.

About This Mod:

Ithania Canned Goods introduces a complete, immersive canning system built around preparation and long-term survival. From crafting the components to sealing your meals, this mod adds a full preservation workflow that fits naturally into the Vintage Story experience.

Compatible with: Food Shelves

Known Bugs:

  • Currently the Cans are only giving back 1/4 of the nutrional value that is being displayed. (Currently being worked on)  Fixed
  • Placing a can in a cellar on the ground does not give the can the cellar "buff" as it would with crocks being placed on the ground in the cellar. Fixed

I have canned my first food, great experience, love the mod, but my shelf life only said to be 2.6 years, even with the modifier bumped up to 50x

i am using cabbage-onion stew with stewed redmeat, preserved can placed on a shelf

Forn , 2 hours ago (modified 2 hours ago)

TGerror Currently steel is the only metal to craft the cans. Also you can not "melt" the cans down to use them for something else. The can's are reusable but not resuable in the sense of making something else.

Forn , 2 hours ago

FNXR Currently you cannot put any liquids in the cans. This might be something we will look into doing eventually

TGerror, 3 hours ago

just curious, can you use other metals to make a can? I'm just asking because steel takes a really long time to make and costs a fortune too, but also if it's possible to melt the cans down again so you can use them for something else?

FNXR, 3 hours ago

Can you can (lol) liquids with this mod?

Forn , 17 hours ago

Yarro Thank you for that Information! I will look into it. Also glad you like the guidebook! Took a bit of time creating it and wanted to make sure it was suitable for everyone!

Forn , 17 hours ago

wojtek16 Its something we could possibly implement in the future or add another variant that is powered. Thank you for loving the mod!

Yarro, 18 hours ago

The link to the 'Spam Recipe' is broken in the 'Recipe Additions' section of the guide.
I'm very impressed with how through your guidebook is! It's very good.

Do you guys think you might ever add some type of automation to the canning process? Like using a geared axel to use the canning press? Just an idea but feel like it might be cool to incorporate if possible, loving the mod so far!!!

Forn , 20 hours ago (modified 20 hours ago)

To Everyone: With the newest version 1.2.0, we hopefully didn't introduce any new bugs and If you find a bug let us know. Hope you all enjoy some of the new things and the QOL changes made! Enjoy and thank you all for your feedback. Next Big Update Hopefully will be The Glass Jar System :D

Forn , 2 days ago

SynthWave I personally like the new models I made much better too! Fits more VS for sure. Thanks to you for suggesting the idea! We will try and shape this mod how the community wants to see this mod but while still how we want to see it develop. Hopefully the best of both worlds!

Forn , 2 days ago

SirRogue

Currently we felt the end game was lacking besides making armor and tools. We wanted to make the end game more enticing to achieve. We didn't want people just bypassing crocks all together and have an actual progression system. Also we felt making steel cans with a tinning process felt more immersive. As far as players maintating their food like you say is a per player basis. Everyone has thier own style and this mod isn't for everyone. We won't be changing the cans from steel age but we do plan on implementing Glass Jars which is still being worked on and these glass Jars will hopefully provide a good mid point into canning.

SirRogue, 2 days ago

This mod looks super cool but requiring steel feels like a massive oversight to me. Aside from niche cases like massive groups on super long term servers, by the time players have steel food preservation at this level is usually entirely unnecessary and players are usually even intentionally letting food rot due to massive surplus.

Tin seems expensive on its own, and access to this tech in Bronze Age feels powerful. Perhaps this could be an Iron Age tech, and not steel?

SynthWave, 2 days ago

Forn i just saw you updated the models to make them appear more vanilla, i can't say how thankful I am, they do look way better now

looking forward to see how this mod develops, will definitely be including it in all of my playthroughs with friends

Forn , 2 days ago

Angry_parZival Currently there won't be a config for the amount of servings in a can due to the preservation process we have. There will be a future Implementation to increase the amount of servings but right now its capped at 4. The cans are more meant to be like the vanilla crocks. Which the crock and the can are almost roughly the same size.

The Vanilla Cooking Pot Allows up to 6 Servings while the Vanilla Crock allows only 4 servings

Angry_parZival, 2 days ago (modified 2 days ago)

can we have a config option for how many servings there can be per can
these cans be chunky and should have more than 4 servings
(vanilla pot holds 6 these are bigger id say 8-10 servings if you want to be consistent)
plus a few suggestions for the ui
first off
let us place the cans and whatnot  into the benches by holding them in our hands and right clicking (this applies to the lids too)
a different design for the can press would be optimal (one big lever with the can sitting roughly an inch or so below the head)

there is also some item ghosting but i have a rather interesting cocktail of mods so it could be something else

Forn , 2 days ago (modified 2 days ago)

Arbyyyy Compatibility may already be set for Expanded foods but I can't say for 100% cause I haven't personally tested but with the way our system is set up it accepts meal type items so ideally Expanded food items should work with our mod. Eventually we will get to adding some compatability for Food Shelfs which may even come in the next update :D.

As far as eating from the opened can, currently you just directly eat straight out of the can but in the next update. You will also be able to take a serving from it with a bowl simillar to crocks

Forn , 2 days ago

_HydraHeaven Pettanko We currently don't plan on allowing raw ingredients to be stored In the cans for later use. Our main focus rn is meals and the preservation proccess of those meals. Not saying we won't implement something like that but right now its out of our scope and other future plans are going to take priority. I would personally Recommend Food Shelves
That mod is better suited and has alot of options for storing Raw Ingredients better if your looking for that right now.

Pettanko, 2 days ago

I was also curious if the feature that _HydraHeaven brought up would be implemented in a future update. Would love to see it if it is something you can do. I appreciate the mod as it is and any continued support you give it!

_HydraHeaven, 2 days ago

Is canning ingredients eventually something that would be worked on? Right now all ingredients turn into a meal but being able to keep ingredients fresh for use in future meals would be a nice addition :]

Arbyyyy, 2 days ago

Looks good so far! Can't wait to see compatibility added for Expanded Foods and FoodShelves. When a can is opened, do they act like a crock in which you need a bowl to collect a serving and eat, or can you eat straight out of the can?

Forn , 2 days ago

Astella, 3 days ago

Thank you so much for this mod I love it!

Forn , 3 days ago (modified 3 days ago)

Mako_Sensei Could you tells us a bit more detail in what your issue is regarding preserved cans and opening them? Also this mod hasn't been tested with other mods so I can't confirm 100% functionality with other mods installed

Forn , 3 days ago

Cartio Could be a fun idea for sure! 👀

Forn , 3 days ago

Vawokil Yes, the way Vintage Story handles their crocks is a bit different with it technically being a block so we are working on something to align more with the crocks for the preserved cans. This should solve the cellar issue and maybe introduce some new features for the can. Thank you for you comment and trying to help us! Its greatly apperciated!

Mako_Sensei, 3 days ago

I probably encountered a compatibility issue with one of my mods, but all of the functionality doesnt seem to work on 1.21.6.

Have been following the handbook and had succes from canning to adding the lid, but preserving and openning is an issue.

Cartio, 3 days ago

You should add lead cans that poison you for funzies :)

Vawokil, 3 days ago (modified 3 days ago)

First, I'm no modder, I barely know some things about it but decided to look into the ground storage thingy just for curiosity.

Could it be that the issue has something to do with the "can" being only considered an item (itemtypes) and not also a block (blocktypes)?, I checked the vanilla "crock" and also the "metal crocks" from the 'Metal Pots' mods and both of those have blocktypes json files, the vanilla "crock" json file even has a comment that says ""// The ground storable obsoletes this being a block. Should be an item, but is kept a block for backwards compatibility"", so maybe there is something funky going on there.

Also the "cheese" and "egg" both have itemtypes and blocktypes json files and the "pie" only has a blocktypes json file for example. IF the type is related to this maybe you can just add a "can" blocktype json without requiring an item purge on an existing save.

Forn , 4 days ago

Vladmirangel Thank you! Instead of searching as well, as soon as you pull up the handbook there is a tab on the left hand side for this mod. It list all the handbook guides I've written up

As far as changing the default Servings via Config. It will have to be discussed but right now we probably wont add the option right now and can't say for certian if we will make a config for it. We do have some future plans that will allow more servings per can without the use of config setting.

Vladmirangel, 4 days ago

The handbook documentations is pretty good on this. If anyone is having trouble looking up the items on the Handbook, search for "cann" so only the stuff from this mod pops up.

Forn Also any chance to have a config option to change the default 4 servings per can into a different amount?

MooseCampbell, 4 days ago

Forn Thank you!

Forn , 4 days ago

MooseCampbell Compatibility with that mod would not work. We did "mimic" the fruit press from vanilla however its been modified and is essientially its own block seperate from the actual fruit press. However I will look into seeing about implementing what that mod essientally does. So like yourself and anyone else can just do (Sneak + Right Click) to have the press automatically go down if they choose to do so.

MooseCampbell, 4 days ago

Dont suppose we could get compatibility with this mod?

Aimli_ From my testing while making this mod. That is not the case and I will provide an example below. I will note however placing a can inside a cellar on the ground should still give the cellar buff like crocs but our cans do not currently. This is due to how crocs are handled in the game. I will see about fixing Ground Storage in a cellar for the cans. However the rates for everything else are normal and match vanilla gameplay

Sealed Crock:
4 Servings of Hefty Red Meat Stew

  • Protein 1680 Sat.
  • Fresh for 60 Days (In Inventory)
  • Fresh for 24.8 Days (Outside, Placed On The Ground)
  • Fresh for 2.1 Years (In a Cellar on a Shelf  w/0.26x Perish Speed)
Aimli_, 4 days ago

Food should have the same shelf life when held in your hand as when placed on the ground—at least that’s how it works in the vanilla game.

Forn , 4 days ago

Aimli_ I don't know exactly what meal your using with those numbers. Everything seems to be adding up correctly for spoilage on my end. Vanilla Vintage Story has a higher spoilage speed with placing things on the ground. Roughly ~3x or more speed increase if my math is correct. Here is a quick example, based on these numbers everything is operating correctly with our 25x default baseline for shelf life of preserved cans and following vanilla spoilage rates for either being in an Inventory, Cellar or on the Ground.

Preserved Can:
4 Servings of Hefty Red Meat Stew

  • Protein 1680 Sat.
  • Fresh for 1.6 Years (In Inventory)
  • Fresh for 169.6 Days (Outside, Placed On The Ground)
  • Fresh for 6 Years (In a Cellar on a Shelf  w/0.26x Perish Speed)

Aimli_, 4 days ago
Preserved Cans have normal, expected shelf life when kept in your inventory or in the cellar. However, their shelf life is drastically reduced when placed on the ground.

Example:

  • Cellar: 326 years
  • Inventory: 84 years
  • On the ground: 25 years
Blink, 4 days ago

InjuredAnders That sounds like a fun and silly mechanic. We don't have plans for anything like that at the moment since there aren't any vanilla mechanics with behavior like that. It is something we can look into and have it be configurable to be enabled or not if there is enough interest.

Forn , 4 days ago (modified 4 days ago)

mh55 The Can Opener must go in your off hand. While your preserved can in your hotbar selected, Hold Sneak + Right Click and it will open after roughly 3 Seconds

mh55, 4 days ago (modified 4 days ago)

I either im stupid or the can opener just doesnt work.
I tried it with a preserved can in my hand and one on the ground multiple times and it just doesnt work. I also tried it in my main hand

Forn , 4 days ago (modified 4 days ago)

Thoman I know it isn't listed on the mod page here but all of those questions are answered in the handbook. I made a complete guide for this mod regarding hopefully any questions but to answer your questions now.

- Steel Cans cost 2 Steel Ingots and you receive 8 Steel Cans. (This can be changed in the config in game via ConfigLib)

- From our understanding Vanilla Sealed Crocks give ~10x spoilage reduction while our cans give a boost of 25x spoilage reduction. More than double vanilla, so yes canned food last way longer (This can also be configured in the config in game)

- Cans last forever as long as you don't let the contents of the can spoil. Once spoiled the cans turn into a rotten can and you essientally lose the can because its been "contaminated". You can at least turn the rotten can into steel bits. (We have thought about implementing a sterilization feature in the future)

- Yes cellars affect canned food life span, simllar to crocks. We kept this mod close to vanilla as possible while still adding a whole new element to the game

Forn , 4 days ago

MrGerman Thank you! Haven't fully tested ourselfs but people have said it seems compatiable with other food mods but I can't say for certain. Haven't tested with Food Shelfs yet either. Once we get most of any bugs out of the way and a better baseline we will be testing compatability ourselfs with other mods.

Thoman, 4 days ago

Hello, This look amazing! A few questions:

  • What is the steel cost per can, or cans per ingot?
  • Does canned food last longer than sealed crocks?
  • How long do cans last?
  • Do cellars affect canned food life span?
InjuredAnders, 5 days ago (modified 5 days ago)

would you ever consider adding a chance for the pressure cooker to fail and explode in a violent steam explosion severely scalding any poor seraph in its vacinity

MrGerman, 5 days ago

Looking amasing, i only wait as you add compatibility to Expanded Foods, Culinary Artillery, Pemican and Food Shelfs. Wish you smooth work and I patiently wait for add this to my futures playthroughs!

Forn , 5 days ago

Kynorr Thank you so much! All of your feedback will be saved and gone over to think about implementing your thoughts! We hope to shape this mod to its best form and thats possible because of people like you! Once again thank you! ☺️

Forn , 5 days ago

Mr_J_Soda Yukari_75 Mod has been tested for 1.21.5 and seems to be working just fine. Do let us know if you come into any issues if we missed something! Thanks and Enjoy!

Kynorr, 5 days ago

I love this mod and the way you two have made it. I like cooking in large batches, so keeping what I've cooked from spoiling constantly is big, and it's so satisfying to go into a fully stocked, diverse cellar. I really appreciate the guides, both because they fit the feeling of Vintage Story of introducing players to and celebrating the technological and procedural knowledge of past generations, and because they specify commands, locations, and sections (and the troubleshooting section is a great idea!) so I'm not scurrying back to the mod page whenever I'm confused by a process, which kinda ruins immersion. Between that and asking for community suggestions, it's quite thoughtful of you, and it's what I love about VS mods. So please know that my suggestions come from a place of appreciation by a blissfully ignorant non-coder. :)

I can understand why some might wince at the thought of using steel for the cans, but especially if you plan to implement glass jars (perhaps with fully tin lids, to keep them in the bronze age) with lower costs and correspondingly lower preservation times (possibly also a chance of leaking/exploding when boiling?), it gives a sense of progression and a use for endgame steel foundries after you've made three of every tool and a set of plate armor. Another possibility would be to change the pressure canner setup to a two-tiered system: the pot itself could be a little cheaper and made entirely of iron, and good for water bathing glass jars with fruits/jams and (pickling) vegetables, but not full/mixed meals, dairy, or meats. With the steel age comes the pressure canner lid and the option to can anything if it's in a metal can. I'm basing this two-tiered system off of the SDSU's guide to water bathing vs. pressure canning: https://extension.sdstate.edu/water-bathing-vs-pressure-canning

Because the can's model is taller than the crock, the crock-sized label on it sits higher up the model, decreasing readability with high shelves, and brings attention to the unused, empty space. Knowing what you've canned at a glance without needing to look at the tooltip is useful and it matches what people see when they look at cans in real life. Could you increase the size while still using vanilla assets so it covers the whole can? If not, could you make a label that does the same? To add to immersion, you could add in a parchment section to the canning station and either a piece of charcoal - which could draw simple silhouettes on the labels - or a painting kit - crafted from a number of paintbrushes and different dye colors, used to paint full images on the labels.

Small nitpick, but it can be a little frustrating when corresponding pieces don't have the same stack sizes, so perhaps bump up the can stack size from 16 to 32 to match the lids?

On the canning station, there are what look like white circles to me, on the top shelf and to the left on the table. They're not the same color as the cans nearby, so I'm assuming they're not lids. Are they meant to represent small dishes for containing ingredients?

The repurposing of the fruit press model into a VS-friendly canning press is adorably clever. For greater immersion to match the excellently crafted canning station (love that you see food on the table!) perhaps a section like the setup at a fast food restaurant for to-go cups and lids as a visual representation of how many lids remain. It might also reduce UI-related frustration for long canning sessions if you could put, say, 1-4 prepped cans "on deck" behind the press (since that's about how wide the model looks to me, and one row could fit there), with 1-4 turns of the press sealing them each in turn, and having the machine instantly drop a sealed can into your inventory. That may be incompatible with the way the fruit press system works, though, and I get it if your vision for the mod includes more attention to detail and less factory-style production.

For mod compatibility, the Lifeways: Core mod introduces condensed milk, Salt and Sands has mussels and clams, while Primitive Survival has herring and caviar, all of which are begging to be canned (or jarred, for caviar). For more recipes to differentiate glass canning from simple pickled vegetables, perhaps you could skip the boiling step to allow for fermented recipes like kimchi, stinky tofu, or tempeh, and in smaller batches/with a smaller cellar footprint than an entire barrel. For the kimchi, Floral Zones: Cosmopolitan Region provides garlic, though I don't know of any mods that let you grow chili peppers. I suppose Just The Pepper's chopped peppers could be headcanoned/used in place of gochujang.

This is entirely unnecessary, since it's purely aesthetic, but I think it could be fun to make Spam in its classic, round-rectangular can. I'm imagining a recipe would be red meat, salt, water, and flour of some kind, to fudge the potato starch ingredient.

Great start to the mod! Looking forward to what you do with it.

Yukari_75, 5 days ago

I'll second the request for 1.21.5 support since this seems like the kind of thing that could potentially be too complicated for a simple dependency version change to get working, but if I'm wrong that would be great to have corrected as well

Mr_J_Soda, 5 days ago

Would it be possible to also get support for 1.21.5?

Forn , 5 days ago

Yarro wanted to make going to the steel age more worth it and to kinda do some realism. Also instead of just making a tin can we wanted something more. So steel cans that go through a tinning process etc.

Yarro, 5 days ago

Very interesting mod! One question, why steel and not tin for the can material?

Forn , 5 days ago (modified 5 days ago)

SynthWave Thank You! Its an option that can be explored for a different model or textures but no guarantee

SynthWave, 5 days ago

Hello Forn I can't admire your mod enough, as someone who cooks for my hamlet all the time (even for money) this is just perfect, but I wanted to ask; any chance you can make the cans look more true to the game's design? (less round, less complex textures and etc.) if not, that's totally fine, thank you

Forn , 6 days ago (modified 6 days ago)

KoRGeostriker If you cry, I'll cry! Thank You!

KoRGeostriker, 6 days ago

thank you........ i might just cry ive been wanting a mod like this since 2020 even started to model my own Tin can in an effort to maybe make a mod, even though I 100% lack any skill in 3D modeling let alone coding your awsome keep up the Great work!!💪😭🙏🤘

Forn , 6 days ago (modified 6 days ago)

Aimli_ The math is there but not entirely working, I will get to work on fixing this bug right away. Currently for some reason the cans are only giving 1/4 of the values, so if its 1 Serving of meat with 840 Protein its only providing 210 Protein. Which is why your having the issue you described with only getting 420 Food out of 1680 Protein. The values are displaying correctly just on the backend its only giving 1/4.

As far as the can opener with the durability its currently 50 with it only costing 1 durability for opening a can (You can open 50 cans). We will look at this and decide to up the value or not

MooseCampbell, 6 days ago

Forn Awesome!! Thanks!!

Forn , 6 days ago

MooseCampbell Yes I will look into adding that option to the config file!

MooseCampbell, 6 days ago

Forn Totally fine, I get it. Its an upgraded version of crocks. Glass jars sound nice. Would it be possible to add a config for how many cans you craft from the ingots?

Forn , 6 days ago

MooseCampbell Sorry for the description implying that other metal cans were in place (It now says steel cans & not metal cans). We tried to keep it Semi real with the cans so we started with steel and not like iron, copper or another metal. We do plan on adding glass jars as a more mid point and less expensive

  1. The finished canned meal contains 4 servings and shows 1680 protein, but eating one serving only gives 420 food. The total of 4 servings only matches the displayed value, BUG?"

Why would that be a bug? Thats how crocks and pies work as well. Thats how the math adds up...

It only uses steel for cans? Oof

Description implies different metals could be used

*Thanks for changing it!

Amazing mod, very useful!

I have a few small issues to report:

  1. The finished canned meal contains 4 servings and shows 1680 protein, but eating one serving only gives 420 food. The total of 4 servings only matches the displayed value, BUG?
  2. Rotten canned food can only be destroyed. It would be better to add a recycle or salvage option.
  3. The can opener only has 50 durability, it breaks way too easily. Please consider increasing its durability.

    Thanks for your hard work!

fallout, vintage story edition) Amazingly made mod!

wojtek16 The Cans are reusable actually! (Unless its broken which it shouldn't be but let me know if it is) Once you finish the meal in the can it will turn back into an Empty can to be used again. So the only thing you lose is the Canning Lid, However due to the huge positive of canning we did add a negative feature where the food becoming spoiled will "contaminate" the can and make it no longer usable

I will make a note of adding compatibility with glass making! We do have at the top of this mod page an Issue Tracker that you can report bugs or request features!

KalGilamor Currently the can's are really only meant for food but that doesn't mean we can't come up with something in the near future for liquids!

Calbain, Gibbeyy, WarBarista Thank you all! Can't wait to continue with this mod and make it even better!

This is so insanely cool!!! Can't wait for the glass jars, this is something I've been waiting for!

one small ask I guess, is it possible to add a way to recycle the cans? And for future to add compatibility with glass making maybe (if possible, if not that's still amazing) to glass makjng mod to make the glass jars?

i am still so hyped about this, thabk you for making this mod!!

KalGilamor, 6 days ago

Hey Boss, could you maybe also allow us to can beer, mead etc. I would love to use this on the rp server I play on to sell beer far and wide!

WarBarista, 6 days ago

I really like how the process of canning is done, pretty cool

Gibbeyy, 6 days ago

Daang so cool!

Between this and the backpacks, it seems like Ithania is preparing for an expedition of some sort...

Excellent mod all-round, lovely work on the pressure cooker model! EF working out of the box is great too, canned some tomato soup while testing it.

I only wish I had more luck finding cassiterite in my games.😔

Edit: heads-up to anyone using Hydrate - well water will not work with the cooker.

CyrusJazzberry Thank you for you testing a bit with another food mod! Ideally this mod shouldn't hopefully have much compatability issues with it following vanilla meal guidelines. We haven't tested much with other mods yet tho. Want to get any major bugs out of the way

Blink, 6 days ago

SilentCedric Thank you for checking it out. If you encounter any bugs we would love any bug reports you can provide

SilentCedric, 6 days ago

Well I'm honestly surprised no one made something like this already but I like it and will be trying this mod.

CyrusJazzberry, 6 days ago

Very interesting mod, I'll be keeping track of this one!
I decided to test a few Expanded Foods cooking pot meals and it seems to work just fine, at least with compote and hot pasta.

Forn , 6 days ago

SwissArmyLass Thank you! Currently this mod follows vanilla meal recipies. No testing with other food mods have been done yet but if you end up testing it with other food mods your input would be greatly appreciated!

SwissArmyLass, 6 days ago

I cant wait to see how this mod grows! I really cant wait until it becomes compatible with other food and content mods! I have crazy high hopes and will be following this mods progress closely. sadly cant add to my server because of all the other food mods i have at this time.
