Overview


 

Have you ever had that little voice in the back of your head saying, "You should draw more, or you’ll die"? I know i had. Well, look at us now, we can... in-game! It’s a sketchbook you can use for pretty much anything you’d use a sketchbook for in real life! You can also export your drawings and transfer them between worlds and friends! Works with drawing tablets!

 

The inspiration behind this mod was actually Arthur Morgan’s journal from rdr2. Now you can be like him and document your journey or your moral dilemmas, you can also be like John and do your best! There are many things you can do: you can play tic-tac-toe with your companions, keep a list of your most important tasks, or just make some doodles while waiting for iron. The world is your oyster! (You can even draw an oyster if you’d like!) It's also yet another mod that I wanted to have in my nomadic playthrough, since i wanted a way to document the incredbile things I've been experiencing.

 

Highly recommend combining this mod with Salty´s Cameraman for some extra fun angles!

How to use


 

Press Right Mouse Button to open the editor. Go wild! There are currently two colors palettes and six tools that you can pick from:

 

Options explained
  • Chalk - color palette that goes from black to white
  • Sepia - color palette that goes from dark brown to creme
  • Size - brush size
  • Text size - self explanatory
  • Ink - solid brush
  • Pencil - textured brush
  • Ink wash - watercolor/watered ink like brush, will go under existing strokes
  • Eyedropper - color picker from the sketchbook's page
  • Eraser - self explanatory
  • Add text - will add text by clicking on the sketchbook's page (when launching the mod for the first time, once you add text the window will appear behind the sketchbook, you can move both of those windows to your liking!
  • clear, undo, save - self explanatory 
  • Export, import - you can export and import your work into json file! You can now transfer your sketchbook between worlds!

Roadmap 


 

  • Sketchbook opening/closing animation, maybe page turning animation
  • Ability to tear out a page from the sketchbook. This would allow players to keep and lock a drawing outside the sketchbook, preserving it as a standalone item. Optionally, include a feature to add a frame to the torn page, so players can hang or place it in their camp or home.
  • Drawing tablet preassure sensitivity (not sure if its even possible but would be awesome)
  • General polish, refinement and more optimization (I'll try to make it as lightweight as possible)
  • Recipe changes (i may add things like pencil set to use in the offhand etc.)

Important notes

  • Always back up your world saves before installing any mods. As a new modder, I’m still learning and improving my skills. While I test each mod before uploading, there’s always a chance of human error. With that being said, I won’t take responsibility for any issues that may affect your save or character, so please make sure to back up your files.
  • For Server Owners -  Initially I wanted to make that mod just for the single player, however it became too fun to leave it only for the client side. I did my best to make it work with multiplayer, I have introduced some safety measures and i've optimized it, there is still more room for improvement of course. I've tested the mod on the small 3 ppl lan server and it worked flawlessly. I'm not sure how the mod will perform in a bigger one therefore please be conscious and always make backups. Although the mod is ready, I highly recommend waiting a week or so (starting from 18.02.2026) as I'll have enough time to catch any potential bugs or errors and improve overall stability. I have also tested it on a modpack with 80+ mods so far so good!
  • I have tried my best to clear all potential errors, bugs or crashes however if you encounter any issues please let me know!

JohnWood Thank you so much!! Yesss the "canvas" resolution is fixed at 760 × 512, I might add a config in the future tho! I set max pages to 16 and the res in that way due to concerns about performance but so far but from what i've seen and experienced the mod is very stable! Also to answer the multiplayer question, yes! Each crafted journal gets an unique individual ID, so data is not tied to any specific player, its all on the server. You can share em, write in them and hide them and the contents will stay exactly the same for any player that will come across it ^^

this is the coolest mod I've seen in a bit, I'm fascinated by it and a 100% guaranteed addition to our next world!
I have two silly ol' questions, first is the Resolution fixed? I'm afraid a single page would be too small to draw let's say a map of the world haha
and for my other question is seeing how you've gotten it to work in multiplayer, does this mean that you can share the sketchbook around with its contents staying the same?

excited to see this mod in action! will definitely keep an eye out for future updates and your other mods, this is so cool :D

I've used ConfigLib and I know I've been able to (usually accidentally) detach the config window from the game window. I believe it uses ImGUI or something like that? Perhaps something to look into...

gndrneutralnoun Thank you!! Hm you spark an interesting question. I'm not 100% sure but you can try running the game in windowed mode and then moving the journal window to your other screen ^^

I'd really love to try this even though my modpack is already groaning under the weight of all my mods... Do you think it would be possible to have an option to view the drawing window on a different monitor? My tablet is one with a screen and I prefer to hold it in portrait position; I could just move the screen over, but I think it would feel extremely neat to have my tablet as my "journal" in my hands while I look at the game on my main monitor. Either way, I'm EXTREMELY impressed you made this work!

Loving the mod so far its such a great idea!

- But I have some suggestions to make it easier to have multiple sketchbooks.
The ability to name the books would help keep track of them, I like to keep one for my maps, one for notes, and another as a story but i have to open all of them to find out which is which sometimes
- Different colors, one for each dye would be a nice feature not to mention making identifying the books easier.
- Not sure if it already does this but let other players pick up the books and see the sketches, in my single player I seem to be able to place them down and back up with all my drawings still there.

When you get the torn pages feature working have you considered making a spin off mod about painting?

An easel, a canvas, and painting with dyes for more colours like reds and blues. I think it'd work super well with this mechanic you made!

Whatever the case, this mod is fantastic and it's a must have! I can't stop doodling now, I get to live the starving artist fantasy :)

JeanPierre I'm excited for this map mod you're working on, If I understand right that's exactly the idea I had! Right now I'm on a playthrough without map, however I'm using external app to draw a map as I explore, trying to make it look like those medieval style simple maps. If I could draw on an endless canvas in game, with icons for mountains/forests/hills etc., that would be amazing! Either way nice sketchbook mod :)

Hi, it's a great mod thank you! It's much more immersive to make notes in the game instead of jumping into discord window every 10 minutes lol. I encountered a couple of small inconveniences tho: mostly I'm using a text instrument but it turns off after every raw so I need to click it each time I want to add a new line of text. Also when a window for the text input appears it's not focused so if I forget to click it I'll start doing things in the game instead of typing lol.

It'd be helpful if:

1) The text instrument stay selected after 1 use (maybe add it to the config if there're people prefering it the current way?)

2) Move the focus to the text input window when it opens so we can start typing right after clicking on the page.

Funny you mentioned that, I'm currently working on a map mod thats based on the sketchbook, but with stamps build in so its basically going to be a medival/fantasy in game map builder hehehe your idea is very nice and unique, please try modding! Its incredible and its honestly crazy how many cool this you can do here, even without code. Good luck!!

Wow amazing mod!!! I would love to make a map mod in wich you can draw lines on a map just by looking at blocks in world, so that you could trace the contours of lakes in-game for example and it would show on your map with a block coord to pixel correlation , then you could draw other details. The getting to high points would actually be useful to have more blocks to see an map! This mod makes me think its actually posible so thank you so much! Never modded in my life bat wow this is inspiring hahaha

MihauRit oof, there is this "Captured 229 issues during startup" i assume thats the issue at hand, if you would give me more info about those 229 issues maybe we could troubleshoot this further, if not maybe a full cleanup for vs files + new installation could work but its just a speculation. I'm sorry you're experiencing this ;<

MihauRit 1.12.5 is a typo? you meant to say 1.21.5 right? Very strange, it seems like the mod is working in the background but something interferes with it on your end. Couple of suggestions that you may try:

  1. try disabling overlays, such as discord overlay, nvidia experience etc.
  2. try running this mod on singleplayer and see if it acts the same way, probably will but worth trying
  3. Send me your AppData/Roaming/VintagestoryData/Logs/client-main.txt if you may maybe this could tell us more (drop is here in the comments as "add spoiler", the little crossed eye icon)

I will most assuredly give this a whirl, and I can tell you before even having retrieved the mods I'm missing that I am going to adore it - especially since there is a very, very excellent mod author who has made some very cool nomadic-themed mods. A walking stick, journal to sketch in, all sorts of really cool stuff: I think you'd like them!

Feathered Thank you! I already pushed couple server side improvements ^^ I added page cache to cut load requests, some changes with how data compression is handles. Also now its possible to export the pages into separate json files so the drawings, and journals wont be lost with server wipes etc. Thanks for following the advice tho, its generally just a suggestion but i really want people to have good experience ;D

amaranthinos Thank you!!! Also I play on 1.21.5 but just in case I tested the tentbag mod on the 1.21.6 for you and it works perfectly! I highly recommend trying it out ^^ Its fairly balanced, picking up the tent consumes a chunk of your hunger bar so its a fair deal. Thanks for the recommendation! Verticality is a verryy nice mod I've been using it in my last playthrough. Currently Im having so much fun with Salty's movement series, its great.

This is really freaking cool, omg.  This makes me want to take my tablet out too 😂 I'm definitely adding it at the top of my wishlist.

 

I saw your recent comment about nomad mods - is tentbag stable??  I've been eyeballing it but I'm worried about if it'll work on 21.6.  (I also dont have over 110 mods that may have compatibility issues?? 😬😗🎶😂)

 

Another great add to your nomad list would be Verticality.  I cant play without it.  It hasn't been updated for a while but it runs smoothly enough otherwise.  21.5, it kept having issues with not letting me climb my normal height or charge jump in the middle of game sessions but restarting the save would always fix it.  I haven't noticed any issues with 21.6 so far but I only recently started a new save with it.  Still trying to figure out how to get to the config screen 🤔 (21.5, it seemed to use config lib or something similar vs going into the json.  21.6, it doesnt show under the list in config.  I might be missing a support/extra config mod tho? 🤷‍♂️)

If you play a standard experience on a server etc. this is something completely different so you wont feel like you do the same things. Its a setup for 1.21+ version.

Mods

  • My mods: since those are build for nomadic lifestyle hehe

 

World creation

  • Days per month - id suggest 12-15
  • Land cover setting - since you will be mostly traveling on land i suggest 85-95% going below that will make the travel a bit more challenging (personaly i like to have some lakes etc)
  • Besides these two, other settings are up to your preferences 

 

General playstyle

  • I start with a tamed elk, saddle and a bridle. Your goal should be to build a tent, tent requires a bit of resources to make so you gotta figure out how to survive and acquire those, foraging, trading etc. Your first days you gotta hide in caves for the night. You basically try to progress as you would do normally but you shouln't stay in one place for longer than a week or two (thats what i do!). You will quickly get a hang of it. Once you get a tent and some space to live you can plan things out, if youre low on food, you should hunt/gather and possibly prep some things up. if your food situation is good maybe take care of the storage etc. My current goal is to reach the north and see the northern lights and document all the journey there. You can set up your own goals for example to reach the desert, to be a traveling merchant selling goods you find in ruins. Whatever suits you!

 

Tips

  • To make your food last longer, dig a hole 1x2 into the ground and place your vessel there. Slap a trapdoor on top and your food will last much longer! Quick and easy "on the go" cellar 
  • Take your time with it, I missed lots of things by rushing things up but i slowly learn to just "explore"
  • Ruins are a great place to find usable chests/vessels. You will need those!

only notes is being able to bind the undo button to a hotkey would absolutely slap and maybe a config to change the max number of pages as 16 is too small imo

I get many ideas during my playthrough, some I'm aware that are maybe only situational or very edge cases. But with some for example like dolabra or the sketchbook i feel like the human brain works the similar way, meaning if i thought of that others before me had to be thinking about it as well in the similar situations. DarthSack Beautiful beautiful cairo, i had no idea thats possible, SaltyWater was actually like "its should be possible with cairo" so i started this project about a month ago with so many failed attempts, the canvas is a raw draw surface where pixel data gets written into a byte buffer and blitted all at once rather than pixel by pixel, bresenham's line algorithm for the strokes and manual pixel manipulation for the brush types. I'm still missing a system that will get rid of the data for the sketchbooks that were lost or deleted, right now the data will just sit there unused hehe

I am thankful for your welcome reception to my message and i actually have likely a simpler proposal, a screenshot paster option for sketchbook pages for those who wish to simply capture moments inside it if they lack drawing ability or time to spend drawing.

RumpleRatskin My favourite rodent! ^^ I’m very cautious about modifying existing things in-game, such as the journal. Although the idea of a journal/handbook combination seems very neat, I don’t feel confident enough to risk people’s save files with such a change, hehe. I'm a scared and paranoid fish 90% of the time but with time my friend, with enough time everything is possible ;D

Great idea, couldn't you have the sketchbook related to the journal and add in some illustrations or images (i.e. lore entry relating to locusts has a partly-detailed locust schematic)

 

could also add a built-in voice system where you can choose a selection of basic voices (i.e. microsoft sam) to read out notes/journal entries?

Just to clarify, we aren't building a player drawn map mod, as we don't have the modding skills to do so. But we've been discussing what one would look like for a while and this mod beautifully illustrates a lot of what we've been describing. RodinPandarex Thats the goal! :D besides the sketchbook the system i hammered down, the canvas can do so much more, different backgrounds, brushes, tools, modes it also support grid system for pixel art. Would be a shame to keep it locked. As soon as i polish things up i'll share it ^^

This is truly a fantastic mod, between this, the dolabra and the walking stick mods, all of them just feel so professional and polished while maintaining the unique feel of the vanilla game. It's both impressive and awesome, thank you for making such good mods!

Love this idea.

Unfortunately, on a multiplayer server, whenever I try to save/close the sketchbook, it removes me from the server back to the main menu with the error:
"Too large packet of 1556535 bytes received"

if there was a drawing there, it doesn't save it.

And it only happens when I draw one single pixel even

if I close the sketchbook without touching the drawing page itself it closes it properly.

Calbain I believe that John is a genious minimalist/conteporary artist. Remember to pick a nice place to do it, nothing breaks the journaling flow like a rock thrown by a vicious creature

LadyWYT Yup! It works with drawing tablets right now! It gets a bit finicky with the smallest brush size but overall it does! I want to refine that feature a bit more so the drawing will be smoother over time, have fun with it!!!

Wait, does it actually work with drawing tablets currently, or is that just a roadmap feature? I see that the pressure sensitivity is on the roadmap, but it's not the pressure sensitivity that I care about as much as it is just having the basic tablet function. It's a lot easier to draw with a stylus than it is a mouse. 😂

 

Tablet or not, I'll have to give this one a try at some point. It'd be great for those times in the game where I don't really feel like working on anything particular.
