This mod adds craftable clay tablets and styluses, allowing you to write in cuneiforms (or not).

Use clayforming with any clay to make tablets, craft a stylus with either reed or bone, grab the tablet in your offhand, the stylus in your mainhand and get to scribing !

Do you need this mod ? Probably not. But do you want it ? Eeeh, if you're either a history nerd or a masochist I'd say...

Writing

The writing part is pretty straightforward, press Left Click to start scribing a standard stroke, or Right Click for a hook, then move your mouse to chose the orientation and length, you can use Mousewheel up and down to set the stroke width. Please note that the width and orientation is not available on the hook.

Once satisfied with your stroke, just press Left Click to accept it. You can instead press Right Click to cancel it.

That's it ! Once you're done, just exit out of the writing GUI and the strokes will be visible on the tablet.

How do I erase ?

Well that's the neat part : You don't. Just cross out the part you messed up, and you'll be good to go !

(note: I had a system to erase strokes, but it introduced annoying bugs and I haven't found an alternative that I was happy with, so for now let's just pretend that it's for ImmersionTM)

Reading

You can view the contents of your tablets just by looking at them, but if you need a better look, simply hold Right Click with the tablet in your mainhand and your offhand empty to hold the tablet in front of you.

Kiln Firing

Clay tablets can be fired in either a Pit Kil or a Beehive Kiln in order to make ceramic tablets. Those ceramic tablets will keep their writing but won't be editable anymore.

There's not much gameplay use for that (yet), but it's kinda cool, so I added it.

That's the gist of it ! If you ever need info in-game, just go to the Handbook and look for the page : Game Mechanic: Clay Tablets

It'll give you a summary of what is written here.

Additional notes

I've done some tests for mutliplayer, and it seems to work with some minor caveats. The tablet in-world rendering may only sync once a player updates its inventory, from my testing, just scrolling to another slot was enough. All in all, there might be some quirks but it should work.

Planned Features

(Please note that those are subject to changes)

Actual erasing mechanic

Custom display storage + More storage options

Export writing as PNG (done, waiting for more additions to make a proper update)

More stylus variation

Open to suggestions

Special Thanks

salemstyles over on Discord, for figuring out the solution of my rendering issues

Woeful_wolffor inspiration and letting me grab and modify their animations from Immersive maps (go check it out, it's a great mod)

Elborshooter you could make it so that you can erase whole marks when you use an empty hand

you could also make it so that unfired tablets fade over time, especially in rain

13rimstone, Mar 20th at 6:11 PM

The inherent versatility of the writing mechanic makes me think I could probably just. make a rudimentary english alphabet with the available strokes/hooks and just write in english instead lol

Rexxia, Mar 10th at 8:59 PM

Would writing be easier if it was left-click drag instead of clicking twice?

DoctorSnakes, Mar 6th at 8:39 PM

This is the best VS mod ever made

SaltyWater, Feb 20th at 3:56 PM

this is huge for rp what a amazing idea!

ParallelPenguins, Feb 14th at 7:46 AM

Oh Ea Nasir is going to get SO many letters about his copper now!!

SovietSwede, Feb 13th at 9:27 PM

I love how this mod expects you to be able to read a five thousand year old ideographic writing system with thousands of symbols, and in the description of course you have a segment on reading it

"look at the symbols with your eyes"

very funny stuff

SalemStyles, Feb 9th at 8:27 AM

@OrbitalMechanist ground storage is it's own beast and spent many a day fighting that endless dragon, the way that hand offhand and when toss it on the ground is how the game renders items things in ground storage use a different system entirely so to patch it over is its own endevor trust me, oh and Elborshooter if ever wanna fight that beast again let me know i did make some progress on that. not much but its not invisible anymore so its a step.

Ehhhh glad to see it worked out good for you, was happy to help, was a fun little sidequest few days for sure haha oh and i like the idea of having different stylus stuff for different shapes one could even make hyroglyphs maybe that could be cool find all the lore in game of symbols and make a language from that could also be cool :D good job tho :D

Elborshooter , Feb 9th at 7:34 AM

InfectedMagic Ah, I think I see what they meant. Although I don't think that would fall inside the scope of this mod. Here I'm just providing absic writing tools that can just produce 2 types of strokes, and you do whatever you want from those. It's meant for cuneiform, but you don't have to use them

InfectedMagic, Feb 9th at 2:26 AM

Elborshooter I believe a conscript is a constructed language (Conlang) script. e.g. your own custom script. I think that is a splendid idea to make a custom script for your mod, or maybe the ability to use a different stylus that leaves a different mark.

Elborshooter , Feb 8th at 8:33 PM

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments !

@Sodon I'm not sure what you mean by conscript ?

@captanredbeard Well you can make english-ish characters but it's not really meant for that. You'd probably be better off with a vanilla book

captanredbeard, Feb 8th at 4:54 AM

english-ish characters?

Matricaria, Feb 7th at 11:57 PM

This mod was unironically made for me, thank you! Can't wait to write my favourite Dingir (& other assorted mythological figures) for my wall! ^^

Sodon, Feb 7th at 8:33 PM

It would be awesome if you made a conscript for Vintage Story and added it to this mod

Paxus, Feb 6th at 8:07 PM

For some inexplicable reason, I love this. Can't wait to try this out and inevitably write childishly inappropriate messages in cuneiform!

Elborshooter , Feb 6th at 7:50 PM

OrbitalMechanist That would indeed be cool, however I don't know if it is possible. I will look into it though

OrbitalMechanist, Feb 6th at 7:49 PM

This is an awesome mod but it would be cool if you could hang tablets up like signs or lay them flat and still be able to see the writing.

Calbain, Feb 6th at 5:35 PM

Finally, the game is playable at last!

Elborshooter , Feb 6th at 4:28 PM

Rog_Viis I should add a "planned features" section, cause that is something I want to do

Rog_Viis, Feb 6th at 3:39 PM

[Suggestion]: ability to store tablets on a vertical rack (at least the fired ones) for archival purposes

Jena_Thornwyrd, Feb 6th at 3:08 PM (modified Feb 6th at 3:08 PM)

Varaxia Ea-nāṣir scamed Nanni and treated their servant rudely!!! ;)

For anyone interested, here's the full complaint of Nanni, in Akkadian, about the poor grade copper Ea-nāṣir sold them:
