A Japanese-themed class pack for Vintage Story 1.21.x.
All classes use vanilla traits only (2 buffs / 2 negatives) and now start with vanilla clothing (no armor, no mod deps). Balanced for survival servers without turning your world into EZ-mode.

✨ What’s inside

  • 18 classes, grouped by role:

    • Commoner / Worker: Hyakushō, Shokunin, Daiku, Ishiku, Ayatori

    • Noble & Merchant: Daimyō, Hatamoto, Chōnin, Gōshō

    • Mystic: Onmyōji, Yamabushi, Miko, Kugutsu-shi

    • Warrior: Bushi, Ashigaru, Rōnin, Sōhei, Kensei

  • Vanilla trait set only (no DLLs, no scripts).

  • Starter clothing (vanilla items, no armor): workers/artisans/nobles/mystics/warriors get themed outfits so nobody spawns naked.

✅ Compatibility

  • Game: Vintage Story 1.21.x (min 1.21.0).

  • Dependencies: none.

  • Plays nice with: economy packs (Vinconomy/Coinage), Rustbound Magic, Combat Overhaul, storage/QoL/worldgen mods.

  • Class mod coexistence: This mod provides its own class list (no patches). If you run other class packs, load order only matters if they replace the same config file; side-by-side is generally fine.

🧭 Class roles at a glance

  • Commoners/Workers – stamina, foraging, crafting/repair.

  • Nobles/Merchants – logistics, town life, movement, bargaining.

  • Mystics – survival, stealth, healing/utility vibes.

  • Warriors – mobility + melee focus, with tradeoffs (hunger/vision/civility).

👕 Clothing (vanilla only)

  • Workers: woolen shirt, pastoral pants, forlorn shoes

  • Artisans: embroidered shirt, pastoral pants, belt, shoes

  • Nobles/Merchants: embroidered shirt, aristocrat leggings, shoes

  • Mystics: traveler’s earthrobe over linen tunic, shoes

  • Warriors: woolen shirt, aristocrat leggings, soldier boots, belt

📦 Install / Update

  1. Drop the zip in VintagestoryData/mods (server and clients).

  2. Start a new world or allow a respec and use character select: /player <name> allowcharselonce .charsel

  3. If another mod warns about patch order, just load this after big “total conversion” class packs. (This one is a simple JSON append to game:config/characterclasses.json.)

🔧 Server notes

  • Keep server and clients on the same mod version.

  • This mod doesn’t touch worldgen or items, so it’s hot-swap friendly—but class changes only apply to new characters or after .charsel.

📝 Known limitations

  • Because we’re using vanilla traits only, there are no custom UIs/skills/spells inside this mod. Pair it with your favorite economy/magic/combat mods if you want deeper progression.

  • If another mod replaces the entire characterclasses.json instead of patching it, you may need to adjust load order so this one applies after that mod.

💡 Recommended pairings (optional)

  • Town & trade: Vinconomy, Useful Traders, Coinage

  • Mystic flavor: Rustbound Magic (RBM)

  • Combat feel: Combat Overhaul (plus its lib)

  • Life sim/QoL: Carry On, storage sorters, Wild Farming Revival, wind chimes, etc.

📝 Changelog

  • 0.1.6 — Added vanilla clothing per role; no armor, no deps.

  • 0.1.5 — Titles trimmed; roles moved into descriptions; flavor + description text added to assets/game/lang.

  • 0.1.4 — Proper localization keys (name/desc/flavor) so UI shows text, not keys.

  • 0.1.3 — Switched to no-patch structure (assets/<modid>/config/characterclasses.json).

  • 0.1.2 — Renamed to Twilight Realms Nippon Classes; 1.21.x minimum.

  • 0.1.1 — Internal development.
  • 0.1.0 — Initial pack development.

📜 License

  • Free for servers and modpacks. Please keep the mod name and author credit intact.

cursed_infinity -- Soon as I fix some of the textual gaffs, I'll get those screenshots up. And yes, most of them are for roleplay purposes, since Twilight Realms is a RP server for myself and some friends of mine.

I'm intrigued by this. Of course, I'm going to ask you to add images for the classes just as I did in the Twilightbound classes mod you made, simply because I like seeing every detail and a preview of what the starting clothes in-game will look like. But I'm curious as to exactly what traits each class gets. You say that workers get "stamina, foraging, crafting/repair" traits, but what exactly does that mean regarding stamina? Less hunger drain? What does logistics mean for traits? I'm of course going to go ahead and assume most of these things are for roleplay purposes, but I'd still like to see more details, since balance is a tricky thing if you're making a server.
