EXPANDED BEEKEEPING

Expanded Beekeeping is a Vanilla+ expansion to the base-game beekeeping system. It separates bee population management from resource production, adds meaningful structure to progression, and makes interacting with bees a more deliberate risk/reward activity instead of a passive routine.

Rather than harvesting isolated skeps, players now manage colonies through brood boxes and apiaries. Bee populations must be established and maintained before resources can be produced, and bees are significantly more aggressive when disturbed. Proper tools (especially hive smokers) are required to work safely. The goal is not to replace vanilla beekeeping, but to add depth, planning, and tension while staying close to existing mechanics and balance.

The mod adds four new blocks/items and lightly adjusts base-game behavior to support them.

Brood box:

Brood boxes are used to house and manage a bee population. Like vanilla skeps, they require nearby flowers and an existing bee colony (such as a wild hive, skep, or another populated brood box) to become viable. An empty hive frame must be inserted for bees to begin building broodcomb. Once a frame becomes brooded, the brood box is considered populated. Brooded frames can be removed at any time, allowing bee populations to be moved or transferred between locations.

Apiary:

Apiaries are where beeswax and honeycomb are produced. An apiary must be placed on top of a populated brood box to function. It contains four hive frame slots, which bees will fill with beeswax and eventually honeycomb over time. Beeswax frames can be inserted directly to speed up honey production, allowing players to optimize their workflow.

Hive frames:

Hive frames are the core resource container of the system. They can hold beeswax, honeycomb, or broodcomb, all of which can be harvested with a knife. Frames can be freely moved between brood boxes and apiaries, but removing a frame will reset its production progress. This makes frame management an important part of colony efficiency and logistics.

Hive smokers:

Hive smokers are used to pacify aggressive bees. In Expanded Beekeeping, wild hives, skeps, and brood boxes are far more hostile. Bees will attack players who linger nearby or attempt to interact with hives, including picking up skeps, breaking hives, or removing frames. Holding or placing a lit smoker near a hive prevents attacks. Smokers require dry grass as fuel and can be ignited with a torch or firestarter, staying lit for a limited time. They can also be held in the offhand so that you can use it while moving and harvesting frames.

Important: All smoker variants are functionally identical. Metal type is cosmetic only.

Notes:

This mod is intended as a lightweight expansion rather than a full overhaul, and should fit well into Vanilla+ modpacks.

This is an early release and may have edge cases or compatibility issues with other mods. If you encounter bugs, please report them with as much detail as possible.

I'll see if I can get the fork uploaded in the next couple of days.

ElKimen, 3 days ago

ChiefMigizi Bababuoy hasn't answered yet, i would love to play it in 1.22, did you upload the fork? If not, is there any way you can send it to me? (It will be just for personal playing)

Tegotia, Apr 11th at 3:49 PM

ChiefMigizi I don't need it urgently but I would love that if 1.22 stable drops and there still isn't any updates from bababuoy.

ChiefMigizi, Mar 26th at 6:18 PM

I have created a working version for 1.22 along with adding config support. If there are people waiting for this to get patched for 1.22 and @bababuoy doesn't resurface I can upload my fork.

Spamdex, Mar 26th at 5:44 AM

Hello,

I was wondering if the bee's from this mod are effected by greenhouses. I have a mod intalled that keeps the temp at a consistant 20 c as long as it is enclosed, would that work with this mod?

Thank you so much for your hard work, I really do love this mod.

KitsuneKai, Mar 7th at 11:07 AM

I got a problem where a brood box with empty hive frame included does not recognise flowers nearby and does not work... I got wild skep above the brood box that these bees can populate a brood box. However wild skep shows that recognise 26flowers nearby but brood box zero.

Raek, Mar 3rd at 5:57 PM (modified Mar 3rd at 5:58 PM)

@SirRavin, did you put a frame into the hive? Also...you probably shouldn't put the skep directly on top of it. Put it a block away, with some flowers around, that's how I got mine to work. The Bees want an apiary atop it, the skep may be bugging it out.

With luck it'll take only a week at most for them to move to the hive itself if the weather's good. If you have Golden Combs in it might make it act a bit weird too.

SirRavin, Feb 25th at 5:32 PM

Does anyone know the length of time it takes for bees to populate? I have a Skep right ontop of my Hive and it just says 'Brooding'. It says there is about 85 Flowers around them both. Am I doing something wrong?

Melerna, Feb 24th at 4:01 AM

I've been playing with this mod for a while, and I have to say that I'm a huge fan of it! I have a question, though! Do I harvest the hive frames when it says "honeycomb hive frame", or is there a prompt like with the reed skeps telling me when it's ready to harvest? I'm worried that I'm harvesting them too early! Also, is there any benefit to leaving a few honeycomb hives full? My population is large, and I'm not entirely certain how the mechanic works yet. I'm playing in multiplayer, and I don't want to mess up our group hives, but none of us are certain what the best choice is.

JustRichardTbh, Feb 21st at 4:51 PM

after rebinding sneak to ctrl and sprint to shift, the honeycomb frames still show knife+ctrl+rmb to harvest, when in reality it's knife+sprint+rmb to harvest

GLaDOS_cz, Feb 16th at 3:24 PM

Bees are agressive even in winter when they should be in sleeping stage.

TimeAtomicz, Feb 14th at 8:03 AM

After playing with it for a while i found out that the agressive bees don't spawn unless i'm right next to the hive, interacting doesn't make them spawn so i can just stand a block or two away and they're never really a problem.

By the description it seem like that's not how it's supposed to work.

MrBeargguy, Feb 11th at 9:26 PM

Big fan of the mod so far!
Broodboxes work as intended, my skeps populated the frames pretty easily, and I'm already developing beeswax.

I do get a bit annoyed at how frequently the bees attack just for being nearby; I'm not touching the skeps or apiaries, but they come out and attack me, then chase me down through my property and attack until they suddenly stop.

Perhaps limit their range, how often they attack, or make smokers more effective/longer burning? I use a smoker and they still attack me sometimes.

NateDoesLife, Feb 10th at 7:02 AM (modified Feb 10th at 7:02 AM)

So noted a few issues/items regarding this mod.
- Bug: Broodboxes dont seem to populate from other brood boxes
- Bug/Intentional?: Bees seem to generate honey via apiaries even during cold/winter time (personally......didn't mind it lol but its a bit odd)
- Bug: When I moved my apiaries and re-inserted the brood frame, the flowers stayed at 0 for....pretty much forever. I eventually just decided to take em out and put em back in (unplug/plug back in lol) and that SEEMED to fix it but the flower counts were not acurate and when I left the area and came back they seemed to show new (seemed acurate) numbers.

Also it would be kinda nice if the smoker lasted a bit longer or we could add more grass to it to make it last longer.

Kyun_Lagodyr, Feb 9th at 6:11 AM

Do these have a fimilar flower requirement to the vanilla skep? or do they have different requirements? One of my favorite mods by the way!

Logion567, Feb 8th at 12:40 PM

any plans to make an updated version for 1.22?

ImpatientTravlr, Feb 8th at 12:30 AM (modified Feb 8th at 3:50 PM)

We've been enjoying the mod on our server with our first brood box and apiary, it's a lovely well crafted addition to the game! We've run into issues trying to expand, though. The main apiary registers 88 flowers around it. But the brood boxes I added around it have been stuck on 0 flowers for months, and through multiple server restarts. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've tried resetting them, tried both putting apiaries on top of the brood boxes and leaving them without an apiary, they do have frames, and our orginal apiary has a large population size. No matter what we do though all other brood boxes say "Nearby flowers: 0"
update: idk how I didn't see that others had posted the same issue before me. My bad! Leaving the comment up though because while I don't really mind having to use a skep to expand my bee population (nice to still have a use for the vanilla item!) I think it should be mentioned somewhere in the handbook or on the mod page.

AlebenTod, Feb 6th at 10:24 PM

For some reason, I can't collect the honeycomb with a knife.

NatPro38, Feb 6th at 5:36 PM

bababuoy sounds in Apiary and Hiveframe are missing "game:" namespace.
I am also experiencing similar issues to others regarding Broodbox -> Broodbox population. I was, however, able to populate a Skep from a Broodbox which then populated my other Broodbox.

OrekiWoof, Feb 4th at 9:07 PM

Cool mod :D

Sableye, Feb 3rd at 7:28 PM

Expressing my great desire for a config file for this please <3

CoraTora, Feb 2nd at 10:50 PM

Just put down the start of 4 broodboxes and 4 apiaries. I had two near misses with my smoker running out of fuel and a scare with some nighttime creepies, but I was so anxious to move over everything and get started.

What a delightful mod. Now I don't have to destroy entire colonies to make candles and seal food for winter.

Off to a good start. <3

Heixu, Feb 1st at 11:28 PM (modified Feb 1st at 11:36 PM)

DiPig7970 Yes. Transfer from broodbox doesn't work. Only skep to broodbox with an empty frame. I'm not sure if it was intended or not tho.

DiPig7970, Feb 1st at 11:02 PM

So does that mean if I want to take the first step, I still need to use the original skep to transfer the bees?

Heixu, Feb 1st at 6:48 AM

ThirtySix Expanding bee population works almost the same as in vanilla. You find a hive in nature, populate a skep, take the skep to where you want it. Then you can populate more skeps by placing a new skep close. It works the same with broodboxes exept you use a skep to transport bees from nature into your broodbox, instead of more skeps.
What you need to do that is an empty frame inside the broodbox and a populated skep next to it. Then once you look at the broodbox the description says brooding. That means you've got to wait. You propably figured it out by now.
Also there is a bug where you can't spread bees if you want broodbox to broodbox populating. Since it only works skep to broodbox you need 1 skep at your place at all time unless you don't want to expand the population.

ThirtySix, Jan 30th at 5:23 PM

how exactly does one populate a broodbox?
currently i have a populated reed skep on top of a broodbox with an empty hive frame
does the frame need beeswax already in it to be fit for brooding?
or do i have it all correct asnd just need to wait?

CherryRook, Jan 30th at 4:35 PM

Brooding and everything seems fine but the bees do no longer make sound (the particles fly around like on skeps but no buzzing sound is heard), the broodbox and apieary also do not have sounds when breaking them only when placing. Is this some issue on my end or issue of the mod ?

Otherwhise working fine, great mod !

Heixu, Jan 29th at 9:45 PM

"I can't seem to be able to get a populated broodbox to expand to an unpopulated brood box (it has an empty frame) nor to a skep, skeps to brood box work just fine though."

I have exactly the same problem.

DeanBro, Jan 25th at 12:13 PM

bababuoy  Hello! I have translated the current version of the mod.

Surein, Jan 24th at 7:33 PM (modified Jan 24th at 7:34 PM)

Seconding the request below. A config file to control frame output quantities and bee aggresiveness would be wonderful. Thank you so much for this amazing little mod, it fits the game wonderfully! Is the flower detection radious the same as base game?

Stason4ikRU, Jan 24th at 6:14 PM

Please make a config file with the settings. Now the mod is very unbalanced

MadArtificer, Jan 24th at 1:11 AM (modified Jan 24th at 1:28 AM)

im confused 😅 how do i harvest the frames? do i remove them? and do a crafting window with a specific kind of knife? do i use a knife on them while they are still in the boxes and im just not doing it right? bees halp

edit:
never miind lol i figured it out. gotta take em out and put them on the ground to use knife to harvest them. lol thanks for a great mod!

dimeymer, Jan 23rd at 9:06 PM

Hey!
I made a Russian translation for this mod.
How about adding it?
If you don't mind, the json file is on Google Drive, here

TimeAtomicz, Jan 23rd at 5:15 PM (modified Jan 23rd at 5:28 PM)

Really neat mod, i think the agressive bees are a cool addition.

That being said there are some small issues:

-The timer for how long before a populated skep swarm don't appear anymore

-The amount of apiary/brood box has no impact on the required amount of flower, it seems to be 13-14 not matter how many apiary are there, in contrast, the skep require 5 + 3*(amount of skep around) flowers to have a large population.

-I can't seem to be able to get a populated broodbox to expand to an unpopulated brood box (it has an empty frame) nor to a skep, skeps to brood box work just fine though.

Apart from that it's probably going to become a permanent addition to my modlist.

Cheers !

DiPig7970, Jan 23rd at 1:49 PM

Will this mod conflict with From Golden Combs?

IgnorGTO, Jan 23rd at 12:51 PM

(Lang file now covers all translatable text.)

I added a translation into my language to the server, but for some reason not everything was translated.
Mancer, Jan 23rd at 9:19 AM

NateDoesLife

I had the apiary on top of the brood box from the beginning and it populated

bababuoy

Nothing to apologize for! Thanks for all your work on the mod

Ardail, Jan 23rd at 5:29 AM

Huh I'll have to check this out vs goldencombs, I do feel goldencombs makes it a little too easy with the ceramic hives and the full sized Lanstroth hives are a bit over blown. Also no smoker in it
So I'll be interested to do some testing get a feel of this mod's balance. I like the model style of this mod more TBH. Fits the Vanilla look a lot more IMO

bababuoy , Jan 23rd at 1:17 AM

NateDoesLife Mancer Tschetschjotkin

Sorry about the problems, I made a rookie mistake and made the brood boxes and apiaries only tick progress when the chunks were loaded, it should be fixed now based on my own testing. If it keeps happening let me know!

Tschetschjotkin, Jan 22nd at 8:51 PM

Eh, same thing, bees just do not want to settle boxes.

NateDoesLife, Jan 22nd at 8:29 PM

Mancer Yeah looks like there might of been some issues with unloaded broodboxes given the latest patch for the mod.

Question though, did you have an apiary on top of your brood boxes or just the broodbox as its own thing?

Mancer, Jan 22nd at 7:43 PM

NateDoesLife

It took several days for my first broodbox to populate from my pre-existing skeps. I was close to posting the same question but it finally populated after maybe 7+ days.

bababuoy

Really enjoying the mod so far!

IgnorGTO, Jan 22nd at 2:53 PM

Looks nice. Do you mind sharing source/pushing pdb files with the mod versions ? Helps to figure out bugs and help in the discord for the users

NateDoesLife, Jan 22nd at 3:02 AM

Has anyone gotten a brood box to populate from a skep? I dont know if it just doesnt work while I am away or if having the apiary on top of the broodbox while waiting is the issue. But its been DAYS in my world and nothing.

I have a large populated skep with 17 flowers detected around it and nothing. I've since moved them to a new location with no rain to test out if maybe that was the issue but would be nice to know whats up.

Sartin, Jan 21st at 10:57 PM

Thank you for making this, I always wanted something more lightwight than golden combs

Inflectus, Jan 20th at 2:50 PM

Very neat mod! I like From Golden Combs, but this seems like a much more balanced, lightweight and "lite" approach. Looking forward to whatever else you add or work on. :)

Dracomaser, Jan 20th at 8:44 AM

Thanks so much for making this, I was just looking last week for something like this.

nauti, Jan 19th at 9:27 PM

I'm super excited to try this mod out. I always prefer lightweight Vanilla+ mods to total overhauls. Compatibility with FGC would be a very nice bonus!

If you want to expand on smoker fuels, I recommend anything that would realistically smoke "cool", thick, and aromatic. Beekeepers IRL try to avoid "hot" smoking materials to avoid harming and stressing their bees with hot or toxic fumes.

LumpyAcidFish, Jan 19th at 8:35 PM

what is in golden combs that would add to this mod I have yet to play with either but ive been planning to pay with golden combs

Yarro, Jan 19th at 3:59 PM

Oh, I love this! I've been wanting a simpler version of FGC for ages!

Are there any plans to breed generations of bees, so they become tamer (to a point) as the hives go on?

Blaze_wraith, Jan 19th at 3:04 PM

ooooh, this looks like a good contender to golden combs

LunaGore, Jan 19th at 2:48 PM

Would love compatibility with buzzy bees as well as FGC!

NateDoesLife, Jan 19th at 7:35 AM (modified Jan 19th at 5:33 PM)

Do the apiaries work while unloaded (while I am away from the chunks)?

Also are they affected by temperature at all?

Mirvra, Jan 19th at 5:58 AM (modified Jan 19th at 7:31 AM)

Holy!
Here I was thinking FGC was beekeeping perfection. Then you just pop out of nowhere with stuff I didn't even realize I wished FGC and Vanilla had (vanilla style, aggresive bees, smokers)

Going to test this out since I was literally just about to start working on my bees for my current singleplayer world testing a bunch of new mods XD

Lodeclaw, Jan 19th at 4:04 AM

I've been wanting a lightweight beekeeping expansion so thanks very much for this!

bababuoy , Jan 19th at 2:47 AM

MegaGamer265

You can actually hold the smoker in your offhand, makes it easier to pickup and place the frames while you're near the hives. I should've mentioned that oops!

MegaGamer265, Jan 19th at 2:35 AM

How about right clicking the box with the smoker?

bababuoy , Jan 19th at 2:31 AM

wojtek16

I could possibly add some integration with FGC (just found out about it like an hour ago lol), I'd definitely have to read up on how to do that though. An integration with extra info would make a lot of sense though, that does seem like it just makes sense. I do like the idea with crushed up charcoal or cut linen being used as different fuel sources (maybe different flowers or something too?), same with the different metal tiers. I don't think I'll add passive bees anytime soon, it would be cool if you could like capture different types/species of bees from the wild in a hive, but I think that could also defeat the purpose of the smoker. I'll think it over a little, all great ideas!!!

Charp, Jan 19th at 1:55 AM

This is a awesome Vanilla+ replacement for From Golden Combs and is exactly what I'm looking for.

MystRunner, Jan 19th at 1:53 AM

I deeply love FGC but this looks rather interesting. I always hated the vanilla hives because it was such a pain to get repopulation and the amount of work put in was just not worth it. Things like this and FGC make bee keeping make sense. I might try it out with one of my runs at some point so following to see how it develops.

AmethystZhou, Jan 19th at 1:26 AM

I was looking for exactly this - a light vanilla+ beekeeping mod. Very nice!

wojtek16, Jan 19th at 12:53 AM (modified Jan 19th at 1:22 AM)

Do you think you might do any integration with Golden Combs? I love how your mod looks, would definitely want to try it out! :D

Edit: I tested this out a little with the 245ish (maybe a little more) mods that I have in my singlplayer world, and so far it seems to work, didn't do too extensive testing but seems to work pretty well!

-Something that I feel like might be cool to add, is integration with extra info, to show how much time you still have for the smoker to be on after filling it up, or having the metal types give a lengthier time to work, or if you use crush up charcoal along with the higher tiers it works for a little longer, or if you cut up linen pieces, you can get lengthier use out of it!

-Not sure if there are passive bees that you plan on adding, but I feel like it would be cool to see like an actual swarm if that is possible! (Coming from someone with low amounts of coding experience)

P.S. I understand if you want to stick to primary Vanilla vibe for it, so no worries on the things I mentioned, but thought it would be cool to add! Love so far how this mod looks, added it to my server with my friends so will check it out! :D

Raek, Jan 19th at 12:47 AM

Interesting!

If I find anything odd I'll let you know-it might work very nicely with Golden Combs, hmm.
