"Before the calamity. Before the rot set in. Before the Blackguards and the Forlorn Hope marched.
There was an age of wealth and power — master craftsmen forged blades fit for kings, knights grew fat on coin and blood, women wove their own webs of influence, and lords ruled with iron hands.
Wars raged in the name of the king, calling the boldest and the strongest to seize glory — or die chasing it.
That meant every blacksmith, craftsman, and worker strove to give their best. The most skilled members of the guilds approached the status of scholars and devoted their entire lives to perfecting the crafts they were so deeply committed to.
In these times, armors of unquestionable quality appeared, forged with techniques that only the greatest of masters could replicate.
All of this, of course, is now lost to time.
What remains are a few forgotten scrolls, passed down through generations scarred by hardship and suffering, now left to rot on dust-choked shelves and in the deepest shadows of abandoned strongholds.
Only a handful of these schematics survived the devastating scourge of rot, scattered across the broken world — waiting to be unearthed, claimed, and brought back to glory!
The forge of excellence and perfection awaits you — step forward, and let your hands reignite the flame that shapes destiny."

This series of mods aims to introduce historically inspired armors into the game.
This one is dedicated to the Varangian style.
Armors added by this mod are improved versions of the vanilla items, which serve as the base for crafting these modded armors.
Varangian armor is universal and versitale, matching the Greenwich variants from other mod.
You will need a specific schematic, which can be found in newly generated ruins or may appear at the Treasure Trader once he restocks after you install this mod.
Due to the rarity of these schematics, their price won’t exactly be a bargain.
Anyway, this is a simple content mod at heart.
I’m aware that the recipes are VERY expensive, and that’s intentional — these armors represent very late-game technology. On the bright side, once crafted, the armor is easy to maintain.
Of course, all feedback is welcome, and the availability of this armor in survival mode can be rebalanced in the future if there’s enough pushback.
Compatibilities:(only for 1.21.x)

Hope you enjoy!

[Scene: Early morning in the forge. The air smells of oil and hot iron.
On the central rack stands a strange armor: unmistakably reminiscent
of lorica segmentata ]
Thomas (slowly, incredulously):
…Master.
Is that…
Roman?
Master Eldred (without looking up, hammering calmly):
What?
Thomas (stepping closer, squinting):
Because it really looks like lorica segmentata of the ancients.
Did you… run out of ideas?
[The hammer stops mid-air. Eldred turns his head just enough for one furious eye to be visible.]
Master Eldred (low, offended):
Beg you pardon?
Thomas (grinning, poking the armor):
I mean… returning to the wisdom of men who thought plumbing was magic?
What’s next, master — bronze helmets and short swords?
Master Eldred (snaps fully around):
You watch your tongue, boy.
And more importantly — your eyes.
This is not Roman legionary armor.
Thomas (raising an eyebrow):
Oh?
Because the Romans would like a word.
Several words probably.
Master Eldred (booming):
THIS is Varangian armor!
Thomas (bursts out laughing):
Varangian!? Master, the Varangians are Norsemen!
From Kievan Rus! Big axes, mail shirts, fur, round shields!
This—this is straight out of an imperial parade ground!
Master Eldred (snorts with absolute contempt):
That is what scribes say.
Men who never held a hammer.
Never marched. Never bled.
Thomas (scholarly, enjoying himself):
With respect, master, the Varangian Guard serve Byzantium.
They are Scandinavians!
Master Eldred (eyes blazing, stepping closer):
And what if I told you, Thomas…
that the entire northern look is wrong?
Thomas (grinning):
I’d tell you you’ve finally lost it.
Master Eldred (triumphant, arms wide):
Then prepare to be educated.
[He slams a hand onto the segmented cuirass, metal ringing.]
Master Eldred:
The Varangians marched south boy!
They entered the empire.
They saw Roman discipline, Roman engineering, Roman steel.
Do you think Emperor would leave them walking around in furs like savages?
Thomas (dryly):
Well...
Master Eldred:
They ADOPT IT!
They improve it!
They make it fit their brutality!
[He gestures wildly to the armor.]
Master Eldred:
This is lorica segmentata as it should have evolved!
Thicker bands!
Stronger fastenings!
Built for axe blows, not Gallic peasants with sticks!
Flexible like mail, rigid like plate!
Perfect for elite guards sworn to emperors!
Thomas (arms crossed, amused):
So…
You’re saying every depiction of fur-clad Norse Varangians is wrong…
And you are fixing history?
Master Eldred (without hesitation):
YES.
Thomas:
All of it?
Master Eldred:
ALL OF IT.
Thomas (laughing):
Master… historians are going to riot.
Master Eldred (snorts):
Let them! I forge truth, not consensus.
Thomas (shaking his head, smiling):
One day, master, someone will write a book about you.
Master Eldred (picking up his hammer):
They already have, Thomas.
They just haven’t realized it yet.
[Hammer strikes steel. The segmented plates gleam ominously in the firelight.
Thomas watches, half-amused, half-impressed, as yet another chapter of history
is violently rewritten.]

Steel Captain set three isn't reducing damage at all and its acting like it's cosmetic. There is also no durability listed on the armor. I'm in the newest version.
Any chance we could get a helmet variant with no faceplate?
Been loving the mod otherwise, fantastic work
Would it be possible to tweak some of the recipes?
A lot of the meteoric iron pieces require sturdy leather to make which is an steel level item.
Chipsmoar Thanks for the report! Should be fixed in 1.0.8 :-)
Hi, seems like the meteoric captain helmet + crista requires steel plate to repair. And the other crista helmet variant dont have the recipe to repair. Love these armor sets btw! Thank you so much for making these armor sets <3

As always, I appreciate ya, love this set and your new jousting set!
RyothStormsEdge the guard is from Google searching the "varangian"

The captain armor is litterally For Honor Centurions :D
Hey again, willing to share your inspirations and references again? Especially for the captains helmets?
HEILL Pretty much ok, very annoying very minor errors, no impact on gameplay, but fixed in 1.0.6
Is this ok?

Thank you very much, have a nice weekend!
Kenneth1109 Hopefully fixed in 1.0.5
Barnes Try using the newest version of the mod, that should fix it
Martins_Pizza Danat Changed in 1.0.5 :-)
The Varangian Captain Steel armor isn't working it's not reducing damage at all and its acting like it's cosmetic. There is also no durability listed on the armor.
There is an issue with the helmet plumes that doesnt allow you to craft any beside the Crista I plume no mater how many reams of cloth you put in. 6 cloth should be outputting the winged helmet but it does not. Maybe have the winged be two slots of three cloth so its a diferent "blueprint" than the Crista I. similarly to how the Christa II is three sets of three.
Hey! love the armors <3, laughed so hard after me and my friends read that you based it a bit of For Honor as one was making it just because it looked like "Incredibilis!".
Gotta hit up Danat's Question though aswell, is it intended that iron armor needs sturdy leather?
SunriseLand Fixed in 1.0.4 thanks!
For me, the durability for the Iron Varangian Guard body armor is only 1100. All the other durability values seem good but, that one is super low comparatively. I'm on version 1.0.3 of the mod.
Aduposki It could come eventually, most probably when Atribute Rendering Library starts to support Armor items :-)
Creetosis Through DM on discord
Oooooh this armor is super cool :o good job
How would one go about commissioning an armor set from you?
I love Varangian Guard so this is in fact peak.
But I gotta ask, any reason why you need sturdy leather for this one?
hell yeah 🔥
I know this is probably a big ask but at some point could we get some type of early game armors like special leather, copper, and bronze sets
VoiCat i have, and tried it but sadly couldnt make it work in vanilla, only with OverhaulLib and CO and i would like to have only one dependency and as universal availability as possible. I talked with BowlSoldier about updating his library but sadly he left the modding scene for now. SiiMeR is only keeping it running but doesnt actively develop and Dana is working on implementing the same functionality into Attribute Rendering Library. But our first experiments in doing that were unsuccessfull and quite laggy.
But hopefully they figure it out one day. Im sadly incompetent in coding so i cant do it myself. Once some working attribute library is ready, the fun will really begin :-D
Unrelated to this mod in specific, but have you seen Wearable Render Library? I thought you might find a use for it AladarCZ
PartialSidegrade nope, that was a typo, should be fixed in v1.0.1 as well as the scale / brigadine mixup, thanks!
The armor looks awesome, love a modified scale armor (although it's upgraded from brigandine).
Short question though:
Is the leg part of both scale and plate armor not having any defensive stats intended? The handbook shows only the penalties (head and body looks fine).
Calbain its not even oblivion lmao its better
gg
The light variant is much more historically accurate. The heavy one is a bit of an amalgamation of For Honor Centurion
Ah armor of the latter days of Rome; I was wondering what that would've looked like.
Welcome back, Oblivion Imperial Soldier
