Good Night Sleep
"The world is a place of burden and mischief."
With every passing moment your body is fatigued. Whether piling earth, moving stone, leaping chasms or fleeing enemies - your body wearies. And rest it must.
Have no fear, traveler. A good night’s sleep will sharpen your wits and focus your senses for what lies in store. Have a seat to recover strength or rest your bones by the fire’s light. Pray to whatever gods will listen.
But beware. Fatigue is a puckish goblin. It connives to confound you. Hills steepen as the plains unfold. The fathoms darken into murk as curses burden the land. Even the work of your very hands exposes jeopardy.
So rest and be mindful. May goodness pass to you without grudge.
Fatigue
Unlike other mods, GNS "burns slowly". Fatigue accrues every second of every day. Relentlessly - as you work, fight and explore. But, the effects are mercurial. Over time, you might notice you’re not quite yourself. Your hand slips on a knife. A hole seems a little harder to dig. Some feel wobbly or their eyes dim. They hear things. See things. The road home might become longer than you remember.
But, you can live with it. Fight through. At times, you’ll have to.
Rest
When effects become too...confounding, you’ll find the peace of rest a welcome respite. Take rest when you need it.
- Have a seat. When sitting, fatigue accrues slowly.
- Work by firelight, the flame a restorative companion.
- Perform sacred rites and the Unseen may reward your veneration. Or not. Or worse.
- Sleep. Restful slumber is a powerful medicine.
- No herb or elixir relieves the toll of toil (yet).
Reverence
In addition to Rest, ritual solemnity before an altar tempers fatigue. If you are worthy, the Unseen will grant you favor. But be forewarned. Punishment is heaped on those whose insolence makes them deserving.
Each altar enables levels of ascendance. Each has its own limitations. Sit, at peace. Hold your knife to your heart and utter your petitions [hold Caps Lock]. May you receive a blessing to relieve your burdens.
Burdens
At times and at the whim of the great Darkness, a burden may be imposed upon the land. Have we earned disdain? By a single act or by many? Are they reminders of our limits and justified by our sacrilege?
Know this. Within its boundary, every weight is heavier. Every step longer. Each moment a vice upon your mood and your fatigue will accrue ever faster.

Seek it, and face the challenge within. Hope to be rewarded for your labors and your sacrifice.

Notes:
I believe Vintage Story is well-balanced and smooth-playing as is (with some favorite mods). I didn't want to significantly intervene in the game mechanics or interrupt normal game-play. But as a role-player, endless toil without the need for rest disturbed my ability to suspend reality.
There are many new blocks and items to explore. GNS offers a status bar to show player fatigue (config to hide). And, when in range of a burden, an indicator appears, growing more solid the closer you get to it. You can work yourself to death. The player will begin to take fatal damage after 192 game-hours, eight full days, without rest. So, rest up in preparation for those long and sleepless hikes through the wild. I hope you enjoy playing with this new parameter as part of your world.
In upcoming updates, I will complete the journey. Build low altars into powerful shrines, and through achievements, ultimately alleviate Fatigue as a burden in your world.
Tested Companion Mods: Alchemy, animalcages, auto map markers, bear armor, better ruins, buzz words, carry on, clicktopick, hangingoillamps, immersivewoodchopping, jacks dryable firewood, particle plus, place every time, player corpse, pom notes, primitive survival, sortable storage, step up continued, vigor, zoom button reborn.

Velynicus all good :) thanks for the fix
I think configuration stuff would totally work!
Velynicus then yes I think thats the version that I was playing the mod in whenever I started using the alter. I havent played vintage story in a hot minute but ill check out the new update!
professorstone Fixed in 2.0.5 :-)
Katzvielle So glad you like it. Fixed in 2.0.7 above. I left an uncommented comment in the last release :-(
MiraLeaps Yes! That is exactly what I was hoping to accomplish. :-) So glad you like it!
By other stuff, you mean, burdens, altars, the forthcoming quest system, etc? If it were configurable to turn Burdens on or off , would that accomplish what you are looking for? Would the presence of the altar blocks, the handbook and related items interfere? I have been thinking that I should "separate the elements of the mods" but I think configuration might be more feasible. Le tm eknow your thoughts.
Velynicus im not sure, maybe version 2.0.4, what version did you fix the recipe the blood offering issue? or 2.0.5.
i get this error.
also i love the mod. thanks for making it

Is there any possibility of getting a "lite" version of this mod that only adds the fatigue system and not the ritual stuff? We absolutely love the mechanic of gns's fatigue vs another sleep promoting mod we tried... Like it has us sitting in our den playing games and music and telling stories while we're doing lite tasks to get the fatigue down.... But the other stuff doesn't fit for us (it's really cool, don't get me wrong).
Is there any way to get a lite version of this that's just the fatigue nothing else?
Xsarda Happy to hear it!
Venusgate - thanks for the tip on the Handbook link. Will be fixed the next version!
Velynicus it appears mods update quicker than i can predict. i updated and everything works i was on 2.04
Took me a second to understand what burdens are, but I got it :)
FYI, the "ceremonial knife" link on the Altars handbook page links to purified bone recipe instead.
professorstone and Xsarda: I believe I addressed that issue in a previous release. Would you mind confirming what release you are playing on?
Recipe: Blood offering screenshot
Xsarda I had that same question until I used a vanilla knife. you dont use the blade of rites, but a regular vanilla knife!
- stone
I have a question, I tried making pure blood offering in the bowl and i butchered a poor wolf for the heart and i cannot make the offering with my blade of rites. Any help?
Yes, freezing the accumulation would be fine, it's just hard to concentrate with all the rustoids running about.
I was trying to teleport every 1500 blocks to fill in the map/save files out to 12,000 blocks, took 6 hours and change to do all 290 teleports and wait for fill. I was seeing things for sure. hee hee
(BTW, doing that saves major ticks on the server because it frees up chunk generation time for other things, until people go past the pregenerated parts.)
Ensorcelled Thank you for playing with GNS. Question. Would you elaborate on "turn it off". Would you mean "freeze fatigue accumulation" or "remove all aspects of the mod".
Freezing fatigue during creative mode does make sense. I wish I'd thought of that.
Pardon, could you add a check for creative mode and turn it off in that mode? As an Admin I have to spend a lot of time fixing things on our multi-player and this just keeps ticking away, LOL
Velynicus Hi I don't know how to do that, people here are on the official vintage story discord server and I'm purewinter - dms are open!
professorstone. The latest version 2.0.6 addresses the issue. I left a testing flag on :-(. You should now be able to proay and worship and receive reard and punishments and miracles!
PureWinter I may be interested indeed! I also wonder if I could discuss a related project! If you see this, send me a message. I tried to use the email system but for some reason your name doesn;t populate there.
heya Velynicus!
Just wanted to get some clairifcation about the venerate stone. ive prayed at it a couple of times, each time I got a punishment. are the chances of my fatigue being lifted just low, or are there requirements for me to fufill. I have also seen two burdens appear nearby where I am building my home. the burden of gold and the burden of plenty. I destroyed them of course.
I wish you luck on adding more to this mod!
I bet I could make the fatigue value compatible with Roleplay Me the little mod Duffas and I are working on.
Although it's not in the screenshot example, I implimented a self reflection where you can type a short narrative prompt like "I sit on the ground and think about how this day has gone." And then the mod looks at all the info about you, surrounding you- the temperature, your health, YOUR FATIGUE, and incoorperates it into a written paragraph of self reflection.
If you would like that let me know. 👍🏻
Venusgate I forgot to mention that you can config the "benefit of sleep" as well.
In the config: "SleepMultiplier": 2.0 // This will result in a 2:1 Sleep-Hour: Fatigue-Hour Reduction.
PureWinter It does alot, but it does it in paralelle with the normal game. It doesn't change any existing system, but instead adds a new layer of lore. The next major release will be formiddable! I might chnage the name to "Quest for Rest" . V3 will enable a legitimate quest system for Higher Tier Altars that ultimately lead the player to conquer the Burden of Fatigue forever!...and then continue on with Vintage Story as though nothing has happened.
professorstone That's on me. There was a bug that is now resolved in the latest release 2.0.5. Thank you for plaing the mod and finding the bug!
Maschinenmensch You sure should be able to. GNS doesn;t rewrite any existing game system in any way so yeah - all tshould work swimmingly.
This mod looks formiddable. >_>
Thanks for the mod! Can this be added mid-save?
Heya, I have been playing around with the mod and I currently have all but one item to make the verlent stone, the pure blood offering.
however, when I went to craft it after killing and butchering a wolf, using a bowl, the heart that I got from butchering the wolf, and the blade of rites I was unable to create the pure blood offering. Is there something that I am missing?
Venusgate The default balancing allows fatigue to build up over the course of many days. Sleep will remove fatigue, but not all. That is to encourage the Worship path of the mod. The spiritual path, accumulation of wisdom, trading the sidom for quest-locations. That's coming in the next version...as well as maybe a mod-name change.
There's no bonus fo "feelling rested".
If for some reason you want to achieve "0" fatigue after several days of hard work,you'll have to "have a rest day". Sleep, worship and take it easy.
As for the Fatigue bar overlapping other mod's bars, you can to switch sides, "move it North" or turn it off completely via the config. Off is how I play it.
"HUD_FatigueBar_Enabled": true,
"HUD_BurdenDirectionIndicator_Enabled": true,
"HUD_Side": "left", // or "right"
"FatigueBarUpwardIncrement10pxMuliplier": 3.0, // This will move the Fatigue-Bar "up" on the screen from it's default position by 20px. (1 = 10px, it's default and minimum position, 3 = 30px)
Trying out the mod. I think there might be something wrong with the sleep multiplier, as I'm only losing about 30.0 fatigue per night, but I can easily generate 50 fatigue in a day of work. This is with some config buffs. Maybe it's just a difference in balancing, idk.
Anyway, wanted to mention, the HUD bar on the left overlaps Real Smoke and vanilla's oxygen bar.
Valdius The issue you identified has been rememdied in release 2.0.4. I was indeed able to replicate your issue and resolve it.
Thank you for providing the details! and Letting us address it!
Details for nerds:
The default values are small:
"SittingMult": -0.025, (multiplies base fatigue rate by a small value, basically arresting it)
"NearFireMult": -1.0, (reduces fatigue by 1x the base fatigue rate)
"SittingNearFire": -5.0, (reduces fatigue by 5x the base fatigue rate)
GNS was "subtracting" -.025 when it should have been multiplying. That subtraction worked as intended only when the value subtracted from was larger than .025. In Valdius' case this wasn't true, sign-switching ensued and led to large additions to the Fatigue rate.
Velynicus here is my configuration. let me know if something is wrong with it please.
Burden of Gold Fatigue Scale: 2.000000
Burden of Dominion Fatigue Scale: 3.000000
Burden Default Fatigue Scale: 2.000000
Sitting Near Fire: -25.000000
Fatigue
Fatigue Bar Upward Increment10px Multiplier: 1.000000
Base Fatigue Rate: 30.000000
Mult
Combat Mult: 10.000000
Sprint Mult: 8.000000
Jump Mult: 5.000000
Swim Mult: 8.000000
Sitting Mult: -15.000000
Near Fire Mult: -25.000000
Work Mult: 5.000000
Multiplier
No Tool Multiplier: 5.000000
Wrong Tool Multiplier: 5.000000
Sleep Multiplier: 4.000000
Valdius Please share you configuration. By Default the config values regarding sitting and firepits are negative:
"SittingMult": -0.025,
"NearFireMult": -1.0,
"SittingNearFire": -5.0,
So, if nothing else is acting on your Fatigue, it should descrease when sitting, when near a lit fire, or sitting near a lit fire.
Please, please let me know.
Katzvielle You're welcome!
thanks for the update
When I sit near a fire in the game, I’m expecting my fatigue to decrease because I’ve set negative values for the tiredness gain while resting. However, even with those negative values, my fatigue still goes up instead of going down. This suggests that the game is ignoring or overriding the negative settings, causing resting by the fire to increase tiredness instead of reducing it.
rhino1998 Hello there. Walk/Run speed multipiers are now addressed in the latest release 2.0.3. GNS had set walk-speed at 99% if a player reached 48 hours fatigue. The intent was for the Player to "barely notice" the effect, then slowly and gradually increase the effect every 12 hours. Long story short, in the latest release the base-walk speed is now multiplied by 99% rather than simply set. Check outt the screenshot. Your Hunter is fast again!
Strongecko GNS should now be fully compliant with FOTSA: Caninae. GNS now instantiates its own wolves from Burdens in order to provide the Sacred Heart of the Wolf! GNS still patches vanilla wolves for now until V3 when the queslines for higher-tier altars are up. If you see any more issues with FOTSA or any compatibility, please, please let us know.
Enjoy!
We work for tips.
I found a bug where the walkspeed debuff from fatigue doesn't multiply with existing walkspeed modifications and just sets a max walkspeed. This causes a jump from 110% walkspeed to 99% walkspeed when playing the hunter class and fatigue goes over 50.
Katzvielle In the latest release, you can move the Fatigue Bar up. Screenshot: Fatigue Bar and Burden Icon Moved up
Tee_Executive In the latest release, you can now configure the effect of sleep on fatigue. I did limit this such that the max imum Sleep / Fatigue effect is 4:1. That is, you can set he configuration of sleep's effect from 1 hour of sleep reduce Fatgue by 1 hour all the way up to 1 hour of sleep reduces Fatigue by 4 hours.
I hope this is helpful. Keep the feedback coming!
Here is the full config file as of today (version 2.0.2).
"HUD_FatigueBar_Enabled": true,
"HUD_BurdenDirectionIndicator_Enabled": true,
"HUD_Side": "left",

"BaseFatigueRate": 30.0,

I suggest deleting the file for goodnightsleep found by default here: "\...AppData\Roaming\VintagestoryData\Cache\unpack\goodnightsleep.zip_d3bd8f5cb7f3 And restarting your client or the changes to take effect.
Strongecko Glad you like it! Worship and the spiritual is the lane that I'm trying to fill. I almost called the MOD "Pray for Rest".
Fatal Fatigue in the 3 days? On default game settings, fatal Fatigue is 192 hours away - 8 days. It is sped up by sprinting / jumping / combat etc.
Maybe your game play style is not something I anticipated? Perhaps you are running a mod that alters the day cycle? Are you in range of Burden that you have yet to destroy? It would multiply the fatigue rate by 2 or 3!
You can now change Fatigue rates in the config. The last thing I wanted is for anyone to have to "constantly manage their fatigue".
Thank you for this: "There is a slight incompatibility with FOTSA: Caninae". You are referring to the need for the "Sacred Heart of a Wolf" to build a Tier 3 Altar: Venerate Stone.
I will have to consider how to solve for this as the mod is so popular.
As afar as "seeing some grubs spawn in my house" - you're hallucinating because your over-tired !
Really enjoying this mod so far, excited to see what you end up adding. Especially the spiritual/worship stuff, as not a lot of mods exist that fill that niche.
I do think it's a little difficult at the moment, especially in a new game. I'm accumulating "fatal" fatigue in 3-4 days* and the only surefire way I've discovered to get rid of built-up fatigue is to die as sleeping doesn't seem to help me very much.
There is a slight incompatibility with FOTSA: Caninae, as that mod completely replaces the vanilla wolves. I've also been seeing some grubs spawn in my house (I think it's because I'm using logs in the structure) and figured this may be an unintended feature.
*I'm running an expansive modlist and I think something may be messing with the default tick speed as I've noticed NDL's Timetracker is off, but I haven't done any testing to confirm or deny.
Velynicus wow i feel stupid. the bar wasn't missing it probably was behind the Hydrate or Diedrate mod. Sorry for not thinking last time 😅
i moved the energy bar back to the left and left the Hydrate mod on and took a picture so you can see.
you can see a slight blue bar behind the energy bar, thats from rustbound magic and if i move the energy bar to the right it sits exactly where the hydrate mod is.
hope it helps

Katzvielle There may have been a bug that is now resolved with the config file. Give the new release a try!
Tee_Executive There is currently no config setting for changing the effect of sleep on accumulated fatigue. As is, it 1 hour of sleep removes 1 hour of Fatigue.
Which one is to set the multiplier for how much sleep takes off of fatigue
Velynicus I appreciate it downloading it now I'll play around with it today post what we end up coming up with Thank you again
Tee_Executive Try version: goodnightsleep_v2.0.1.zip. I Added configurable Fatigue-accumulation rates to the config file.
By default: 1 in-game hour = 2.5 real-time minutes = 150 real-time seconds. At BaseFatigueRate: 30.0, after 1 hour , you'll have 1 Hour 15 Minutes of Fatigue.
Please let me know where you and your server lands on the optimal "tick". Enjoy!
Katzvielle You should be able to disable the bar completely and/or move it from right to left. I re-tested that functionality. I am definitely able to move the fatigue bar to the right-lane over the hunger bar.
Here is the config I used:
{
"HUD_FatigueBar_Enabled": true,
"HUD_BurdenDirectionIndicator_Enabled": true,
"HUD_Side": "right"
}
Image: Right-Sided Fatigue Bar.
Perhaps I can add a configuration to let you "raise" the bar 10 px? I'd love it if someone else could test to see if somehow my set-up is conflicting with a local mod.
Tee_Executive I will move configurable FAtigue base_rate this up to the front of the line. I'm curious if somehow the rate was really increased for you - or if it simply felt too fast. The bar runs from 0 to 192 Hours. I purposely designed the rates so that you would not have to sleep all the time. :-).
Wahazar This is a really good idea. Let me look into it and see if I could hook into Primive Survival's altars. I'll keep you posted!
hey i wanted to try out your mod but the bar your mod adds is behind the rustbound magic bar. is there a way i can move it?
i seen in the configure file theres a "HUD_Side": "left" option. i tried changing it to "right" but i guess it just disappeared lol
When you think about "altar compatability", what comes to mind? Along what lines are you thinking?
I was thinking about general method/config for addional rites by using other blocks, for example Primitive survival altairs.
Velynicus
Yes!!! please add a configurable file. My friends and I (about 20 of us) all play on the same server and we really love the mod: the idea, the concept, and the way it works. The only issue is that once we added it, it ended up taking over the whole gameplay. The tick rate was way too fast, and even when we slept or stood by a campfire, it didn’t go down quickly enough for us to do anything else in the game.
I’m not sure if this is caused by conflicts with our other mods, but having the ability to adjust the values would help us find the perfect balance. That would be amazing.
Please let me know if you add a config option—I’d love to put the mod back on our server, because we genuinely enjoyed it and have been waiting for something like this for a long time.
Wahazar: Primitive Survival is a core mod for me as well. When you think about "altar compatability", what comes to mind? Along what lines are you thinking?
Tee_Executive: Fatigue Rates are not yet configurable. However, it would be a relatively simple add. As it is now, Fatigue has a base rate (30 per Server Tick). This is roughly translates to 1 Fatigue per 1 Second fo the Game Day. That rate is influenced work, sprinting, jumping, player health, worship outcomes, etc.
As far as Rest: Sleep subtracts hours slept from total Fatigue. Sitting (resting) essentially freezes Fatigue accumulation. Proximity close proximity to a Campfire decreases Fatihgue 30 per Server Tick. Sitting near a campfire decreases it 230 per Server Tick (5 * base rate). Certainly all could be configurable. I'm interested in what you think about the multipliers and how you would configure them.
Interesting mod.
Would be nice to have some compatibility with these altairs from Primitive Survival mod.
@Velynicus Is there a way to config how much fatigue goes down when sleeping and staying by the campfire to adjust it for the server
osayra: Thank you. Adding a questline to overcome fatigue, as the ultimate object is the next move forward. I'm placing custom map-markers, corpses with items and riddles. It's complicated though because I don;t want to simply "mark the map". /it needs to be based in progression. I've got some concepts working. But I'm all ears on suggestions.
Sampow360: I'll have to visit the Sleep Token mod. I think the Reverence and Worship fucntion - and the fact that you might receive blessing, nothing, some amount of benefit - a miracle, or punishment might separate Good Night Sleep mod from others.
Ensorcelled: Yes, I strongly considered beverages or some kind of consumable to alleviat efatigue. I didn;t want to use alcohol, becaus ei didn;t want to "intervene" in the existing alcohol-related systems (too many opportunities for bugs, complicated with brewing, etc). I'm not sure alchol would relieve fatigue; it may relieve stress but I'm not sure it's a health food or neccessarily "restful". I do get your point however. The concept I landed on was a consumable that when eaten/drunk/smoked alleviates the effect pof fatigue, arrests it or lowers it dramatically, say for 8 hours, but at the expense of a "big hit" eight hours later. Like an emergency item to use when in a tight spot - knowing you'll pay for it later. Like alcohol!
OlafGunnerson: I love the idea of sacrificial incense. And other fetishes and charms. I thought I'd use them as a single-use object that reduces fatigue....or something...I'm not sure what to use the item for. I'd love suggestions.
you're cooking
Literally just Sleep Token lore here. This is the Sleep Token mod.
Jokes aside, cool concept!
Worship.
Nice. Would you consider adding Alchohol as a way to recover? A simple relax and enjoy type system? I mean I saw your "No herb or elixir relieves the toll of toil (yet)." comment, but alcohol has been the #1 "stress" reliever for thousands of years...
This looks great for a snowball earth playthrough. Finland simulator in a block game!
I could also see this going hand in hand with Censership. Sacrifical incense burning and what-not.
