Climb Mountain

Don't look down

 

This mod is designed to work alongside and have a dependency on Catch Ledge

 

Hold SPACE facing any mountain wall (material: Stone and Ore) to start climbing:

(you can release space)

SNEAK to release.

 

From here you can move up,left and right:

And slide down:

image

 

You can switch walls too:

image

 

And jump vertically while idle:

The mod also has a break momentum mechanic:

Hold space while falling to slide down and break momentum:

Your character will hold the wall fighting gravity, you'll be unable to move until you break all momentum.

 

Use catch ledge to climb the last block:

Either approach the ledge and press the catch ledge key or simply jump vertically and use timing to catch ledge:

I highly recommend using:

To look around while climbing without body rotation, or else you will fall.

I agree that there should be a limitation to avoid making this too easy. The vigor mod comes with its own problems so isn't necessarily an ideal solution either.

Requiring the player to have gear is thematically a good solution. But if tools are too much trouble, perhaps armor pieces and backpacks themed as tools would be a solution? Climbing gear as a backpack, climbing picks as gloves. A chalk pouch for better control, grip and friction? Also a hefty increase to penalties if the player is wearing heavy armor (who in their right mind climbs mountains in full plate?) Just items that enable and affect the automatic application of the climbing mechanics. 

A bunch of extra work tbf, but needing dedicated gear to go mountain climbing is quite realistic and thematic, and having the effects applied automatically would ease the burden on the player.

May I ask why the possibility of a config option to require an item (e.g. picks) to climb was discarded? I'm just curious what "too restrictive" means, as I know I'm not the only one who's held off installing this because of a lack of restrictions!

I'm not sure if this is a Climb Mountain or Catch Ledge issue, but the mod is way too finicky with what does and doesn't count as you being at the ledge. Trying to catch the ledge if you're a little too low causes you to just fall, and climbing too high above the ledge also causes you to fall for... some reason? But there isn't really an indication of where the sweet spot is. Just stopping the player at the top as long as there is a grabbable ledge would do wonders for QoL, though keeping the slipping if you try to grab onto dirt would make sense. Also, there probably should be a hunger cost to climbing.

AlebenTod Yeah, there should be a config file under 'VintagestoryData/ModConfig' that allows you to add other types. I recommend adding 'soil' to the list for "sinkholes," soil and gravel for certain mountains, and/or wood for climbing trees (watch out for branch blocks, though).

This is going in my world the second you add an item requirement like picks or bracers/gloves with spikes B)

For the free look, I don't like having too many keybinds personally, perhaps you could use the alt-function somehow? Maybe make the character in free look by default when climbing and holding alt lets you rotate. Or the other way around

SaltyWater Hey, I've had this problem for a while but just figured out what caused it. If I quit a world but return without quiting out of the entire game with Easy Hammer Mode installed then I cannot move sideways at all on cliffs. I just sorta shiver in place. I have no clue how that interferes with this, and I'll probably just remove it, but its wierd enough I had to mention it

On top of Inuko's question, could you make it reliant on a solid face check? As in, anything non-solid is jagged enough to climb barehanded? Otherwise it's a little strange to be able to climb flat mountain faces without tools.

Would it be possible to make the climbing reliant on tools? You need climbing picks and/or spiked boots for example. I see this has been asked a few times already but I'm adding my own interest. I also realise that you can do this by just using ladders so it's not anything game breaking as it is.

Alternative question: Would it be possible to add this functionality on a racial basis? Like a race with claws can scale walls like this but regular people can't.

Would it be possible to add a config option to enable interactions while climbing?  It'd be nice if I could pick up or put down torches on my way out of a hole i dug, for example.  Or put a ladder down.  Speaking of ladders, currently it's not really possible to cleanly transition from climbing a wall to climbing a ladder.  If you're in a one by one hole with a ladder above you, the ladder blocks your from climbing higher, so the only way to get out of the hole is to have some ladders on you, stop climbing, and really quickly slap a ladder down and have enough spare to bridge the gap.

 

HarvestBluehaven check the mod config, you can set what categories of stuff you can climb.  adding this to the right section should allow you to climb any trees:
"Wood",
"Leaves",
"Plant",

Could tree climbing be added to the functionality of this mod? If you have vigor installed, running from predators is not as effective. But i could see running and climbing a tree to get to safety. And to get that pesky resin thats at the top of the tree!

 

This mod is awesome, i love your mods, they add so much to the game, thanks!

this is awesome, but i think it wil lbe useful in specific scenarios because most mountains and hills have 1 layer of gravel which u cant climb on, rendering the feature useless DX

The space bar is intentional, the mod was designed to be used alongside Catch Ledge, I didn't wanted to register another hotkey!

And you can add/change in the configs what kind of material you can climb!

There's only two things that i will critique and that is 1. The button to activate climbing should be changable because the most common problem i have heard about this is it interferes with the jumping if you are to close to a block. 2. You can't climb dirt, sand, or gravel which is sitting on the top of most blocks on a mountain in the game and you cannot remove them while climbing so you end up just falling back down.

do you think it would be possible to create a tool that would aid us in parkour ? i mean with this mod , the catch ledge mod, vault & dive mods do you think adding a tool that would for exemple idon'tknow stuck it self in wood or stone or both and propel us upward ? 

situation : using imersif treefalling i can fell many tree by just cuting 1 how ever many time thishapenedtome the woods stack like .. 4/5ish block tall and .. i really don't want to use a ladder , i could use sayed climbing tool to stuck it inside idk max third or fourth block high and use it to propel my self ? does that make sens ?

After the update everything is working perfectly. 

 

Is there a way to prevent the climbing from happening when on a ladder? Holding space causes the climb to trigger and doesn't climb ladders anymore until it releases.

This mod gives me the idea thats probably way outside of the scope of this mod but if you've played the Cairn demo on steam, basically changing the stone blocks to add gaps and cracks in them and adding then cairn climbinbg mechanics to this. I think that would be cool but idk if its feasable.

I know I'm kinda an idiot, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to grapple over the last top block. Everytime I try, I slide back down the cliff face.

This feels a little too OP for me, except for parkour-oriented players/events, but I think I may re-install it if there's some kind of risks implied with climbing. I think some kind of (low and configurable) probability of falling when you move would make it more balanced.

I think something like "For every meter traveled, draw a random number. If it is lower than the probability, trigger a fall" would make sense. With a low probability of falling, climbing a ~3 blocks wall would be safe unless you're very unlucky, but climbing a ~30 block cliff should be a risky bet on your life.

Anyway as akways with your mods, animations and dynamics are top-notch. Thank you for the immersion you add to the vanilla experience !

Thank you very much, Salty. It's almost the perfect replacement for Movelikekaji. The only thing missing is the ability to crouch in 1x1. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Oh, by the way, it's not compatible with Terrain Slabs. I fall down, ha ha ha.

It's a good mod, but can you make like a variable that check if the player is climbing a ladder already? I keep climbing the sides of my cellar when exiting it.

Another exquisite movement mod, however I quickly found myself trying to climb a mountain face that was topped off with gravel. Do you think immersion would be broken if climbing was compatible with gravel and sand? (maybe not snow or ice though because they're slippery). Otherwise this mod works as Intended.

Im assuming that if you encounter an overhang, it would not be climbable??
