Snitches — Territory Surveillance & Violation Logging Mod
Inspired by Novacain’s Snitches, Raithe Snitches introduces a powerful, immersive surveillance system to Vintage Story. Designed with Civ-style multiplayer in mind, it empowers players to monitor territory, detect intruders, and log violations—without any need for admin intervention.
What is a Snitch?
A Snitch is a mystical scrying device that silently observes nearby Seraphs (players) and logs violations committed within its detection range. Once placed, it monitors a server-configured area around it and records violative actions to chunk-based memory.
Logs are invisible to other players unless intentionally transcribed to parchment or books using the in-game writing system. These logs can serve as hard evidence in player-run justice systems or simply as personal security records.
How It Works In-Game
-
Crafting a Snitch:
Assemble one using:-
1x Temporal Gear
-
Glass Pane
-
Tool-Grade Metal
-
Dense Metal (e.g., Lead or Molybdochalkus)
-
-
Activation:
Once placed, the Snitch passively scans for Seraphs within its server-configured radius (horizontal and vertical), logging any detected violations to a per-chunk record. -
Detection Capabilities:
Snitches log a broad range of events:-
Trespass (player enters detection zone)
-
Escape (player exits zone)
-
Block Break / Block Use / Block Place
-
Reinforcement Place / Reinforcement Break
-
Entity Hit / Entity Killed
-
Player Spawned
-
Collectible Taken (from block inventories)
These violations are detected automatically when a player enters a Snitch's range and are associated with the position they occurred at.
-
-
Log Storage & Output:
Logs are not viewable in the GUI. Instead, the Snitch can transcribe its stored violations onto parchment or books using the Vintage Story writing system. These written records are signed by the Snitch itself and cannot be forged or altered, ensuring trustworthiness. You can however use a written and signed book and write over it when using a snitch. -
Player & Group Management:
Through the Snitch’s GUI, owners can manage an Ignore List of players or groups—entities on this list will not trigger violations.
(Trusted Player access to logs is a planned feature.)
Server Configuration Options
Server admins can fine-tune balance and behavior by metal tier via a config file:
-
Detection Radius (horizontal and vertical)
-
Violation Types per Snitch tier
-
Maximum Log Size (number of entries that fit into a book or parchment)
-
Time Required to Write Logs (affects how long transcription takes)
Each metal tier (e.g., Copper, Tinbronze, Iron) can have distinct detection capabilities, log size, and range, giving server owners fine-grained control.
In-Game Guide
Snitches includes a native Vintage Story Guidebook entry, accessible via the standard help system. The guide includes:
-
Crafting recipe and components
-
Overview of detection and logging behavior
-
Basic instructions on using the Snitch block
Integrations & Compatibility
-
Uses Vintage Story’s built-in Writing System
-
Logs are signed by the Snitch as a "player"
- Logs are now signed by the player writing the log and the Snitch location is stored in the title of the book.
-
Logs cannot be falsified or spoofed - If you run any mod that allows you to unsign a book, you will be able to falsify logs.
-
-
Designed for PvP, Civ-style, or RP servers
Use Cases
-
Catch intruders in bases or ruins
-
Monitor vaults, strongholds, and borders
-
Provide unforgeable logs for in-game legal systems
-
Roleplay investigations, bounty hunting, or espionage

Howdy
I'm just checking if this would work with mods that change the Player names?
I see below that there was an issue reported with it.
Hoping to see if this can be used on the community server I'm on!
Raithe I dont know which mods mess with player names but this is the modlist (though we added some like snitches and removed a couple like manual scraping). Modlist
Server is Tales of Aldravaine.
Lazerz101 Sorry for the delay in response. What server are you on? Can you give me any more information on the errors and do you have any mods that mess with player names?
Getting blank username reports occasionally on a MP server, sometimes from people I know are on the ignore list and sometimes from people who arent on it.
Also occasionally getting unhandled exception errors when trying to pull from snitch to a parchment.
Screenshots of output and snitch settings
Thanks for make this work! For now it is working just fine :)
Sorry for the delay guys! Been super busy with life.
ShantyPossum Ignore list and crashing has been fixed. I cannot replicate the issue of only logging player spawns.
Kalouie Not sure about the download issue. The mod should show the player's username in the log. Are you running any mods that change how usernames function? Can I get a picture of this?
source code please?
Trying to work with the mod and so far...
I can add blank playernames to the snitch "Ignore List" but can't remove them without breaking/replacing it.
Attempting to pull logs without the proper items (ink and quill/paper/book) appears to cause consistent crashing.
Snitches are only logging playerspawns and nothing else, for me.
I forgot to get a crash log but some people just cant access this page and it wont auto download for them and the only error it shows is "One or more errors occurred. (Response status code does not indicate success: 404 (Not Found).)", im not sure how else to explain it. Also I own the Bulwark civilizations server. A new question i'd also like to ask is can the mod show usernames on the log because right now usernames arent viewable on the log and it makes the snitches not necessarily helpful when trying to figure out who was around it. If I can't see usernames on a snitch log then its kind of pointless to have.
Do you have a crash log?
Are the people who can't download getting any kind of error? It lets me download just fine.
Also, what server are you with?
Sometimes the mod crashes when you try to write down the snitch logs and for some people they cant download the mod. Server will fail to auto download it and people cant access the link. Please fix if you can.
i cant install the mod for some reason
can't installe it i dunno why either the one click or the manual
Testing in single player with Combat Overhaul mods and doesn't crash now. Hopefully you will find Shackles and Sancturies equally as useful when I can release them.
Thanks,
Raithe
I will look into vanilla projectiles and see whats going on there. I should have a solution for that fairly soon. As far as Combat Overhaul and all of Maltiez's mods and maybe some other combat style mods, I will have to look at how they implement their systems to fire my events off. I suspected combat mods might have some issues but wasn't testing modded environments. Worst case scenario if I can't find a CO solution quickly, I will disable Hitting and Killing Entities with those mods so that you can still use the mod for all the other functions until I resolve.
Thank you for the feedback!
Raithe
Thanks for the amazing mod but I am also experiencing crashes when shooting entities with projectiles and what not. I am not sure if this is an issue with projectiles in general but I know the mod especially is not compatible with Combat Overhaul and Firearms since it crashes my game when I shoot entities with projectiles.
For some context; I run a civ server and I was letting players use snitches to catch offline raiders and what not but I had to remove the mod since people kept crashing while using bows, spears, and guns. Including me when I tested the mod further.
Hey! Thanks for reviving this amazing mod. I had tested the mod on my server and generated some issues when shooting entities with arrows and spears (without a placed snitch). I had been able to save the crash report but I will try to simulate in singleplayer the error so I can retrieve some information about it.
Keep it up!!
