Balances the loot drops from FoTSA mobs to not drop 40+ meat from one animal

1.1.0 850 Jun 25th at 9:53 PM balancedfotsaloot_1.1.0-1.20.x.zip 1-click install

Added support for the elephantidae animals.

Probably wont update farther as the other mods I'm adding to Age of Seraphs seem fine balanced wise.

I give full permission to everyone to take this and expand on it.

I used 40 as an absolute maximum for animals

I'd been hoping some folks would be motivated to help spread the work load and look into making config compatibility with Maltiez's config lib mod, one person did with the rhino red meat drops but that's it. I suppose I should probably move it up the priority list, though my summer job and 1.21 updates come first so I'll probably get around to it October-November if nobody else gets to it first

Actually I was hoping there was a simple config that would let me edit these values without a Json patch since I really hate Json patching mods.

Unfortunately there wasn't any now here I am, Json patching multiple mods xD

i get having your own balance vision, it’s your work after all and it makes sense to stick to what feels right to you. from what you said it all adds up logically. but since you mentioned getting a lot of balance feedback, maybe it’s worth adding a simple config like a lot of other mods do. then you could just point people to it and let them tweak a number themselves.

i know that’s extra work on your end, but it could save you a lot of headache and make the mod more modular for everyone.

again thanks for your work! the elephants were something i requested sometimeback and i was super hyped to get them and rideable!

Oh I'm happy mods like this have come out, I can point some folks in this direction. I'm mostly bringing this up because you mentioned wanting a more vanilla balance and I feel that it is objectively balanced to a set of vanilla data points. This place will likely be seen by folks unhappy with my current balance of drops and will hopefully reduce the number of messages and comments I get from people less polite than you. Calamity

@Tentharchitect

I really respect the amount of thought and effort you've put into making things consistent with vanilla. Like I said, I still use your mods regardless they add a ton of depth and quality.

The mod we're commenting on does exactly what it sets out to do, and that’s why it’s still part of my load order. I just personally noticed I had a surplus of meat and hides, and that’s where my feedback was coming from.

I don’t think you should feel disheartened, though. People tweak mods all the time to suit their playstyle that’s just part of modding. Your work is clearly appreciated, and a lot of folks (myself included) are happy to work with it or adjust as needed.

That said, even if vanilla doesn’t have a strict internal standard, there’s still a general “feel” or baseline that most players get used to. Compared to that, I’ve definitely ended up with a surplus of meat and hides when using your mods, which made survival and progression noticeably easier.

I think people making patches or tweaks are just trying to bring things closer to that looser vanilla baseline, not discredit the work you’ve done.

Also, I just want to say I don’t think there’s some narrative going around that you're not putting in the work. From what I’ve seen, it’s more that people are making small tweaks to better match their own sense of vanilla balance, not trying to discredit the effort you’ve put into this.

So when I started the FotSA project, I calculated roughly what all of the drops were meant to represent. Ie.. each unit of meat is 1kg of meat, a small hide is 1 square foot and such. I also ran these numbers by Tyron and he confirmed that my calculations were correct, though the devs weren't as precise with the drops as I was being.
I then calculated a line of best fit for the base game animals, determining what ratios of real drops to game drops was in line with vanilla and standardized the now thousands of drop values to these ratios. As such, my content is in fact, balanced to vanilla at that point.

The issue is that later animals stopped holding to that line of best fit, as I discovered later the devs don't have an internal standard for their drops and they set it based on what sounds good when they make the animal in the moment. Which has led to times were the pudu deer, an animal the size of a hare, was briefly sharing the same combat stats and drops as an elk, and the moose, an animal more dangerous, rarer and bigger than the elk, drops less resources than the elk. I've encouraged them to adopt a standard and will recalculate all my animal drops if they hold to one, but there is no way to be consistent with the drops as is.

You're welcome to alter the drops to your preference, but the narrative that there is some vanilla balanced state I am not putting the work into achieving is frustrating and disheartening. Calamity

I think just having a vanilla balance patch would be good for most people. I do think too many hides and meat drop from your mods overall but man the quality they add is good. i personally just wish for a more vanilla version but i still use ur mods reguardless.

💬 WatermelonFrogy , Jun 19th at 3:31 AM

I just went with what I felt made sense, I didn't like how you could kill one animal from your mod and be set for life so I lowered it. I'm just halving the drops while capping it at 30 except for a few animals who are capped at 40

I'm glad you're giving other folks more options! How did you balance the drops? Like did you switch it over to a damage to meat drop ratio, or recalculate the weight to drop ratio?

💬 Wrum, Jun 18th at 2:37 PM

Goated mod, will be even more goated when it's done

💬 WatermelonFrogy , Jun 18th at 5:11 AM

Currently just Bovinae, Cervinae, Machairodontinae, And Rhinocerotidae.

How many mods does this cover in the FoTSA series?
