This mod is about adding some realism to meat, fat, and hide quantity drops from various creatures.

In the 'Alone' survival series, contestants would find themselves severely lacking in fat while trying to subsist on rabbits and small game. Fish are a necessary and vital source of fat.

I like the idea of bushmeat indicated a very lean animal. Rabbits seems like good candidates for this, while raccoons seem more like the kind of critter that gorges itself.

I'm also pretty mad that rabbits don't die with a single arrow shot. That's like a human getting impaled by a ballista and shrugging it off. You hit a rabbit with an arrow, it's going to die. So I've nerfed health points for small animals.

An animals health points are now directly reflected in the amount of raw meat they provide (like offal), and stronger animals will provide bush meat in addition to this "healthy" meat.

---

FEATURES
- Redmeat directly reflects the health points of an animal, whereas bushmeat will reflect extra perceived muscle, and fat for animals that are slower and tankier (plus fish).

PLANNED
- enable and add bass

- modify saltwater fish drops

- add a drop percentage config

---

UPDATE 1.3.0

- Compatibility update for 1.21

- Almost all animals have male/female HP (meaning you drop females faster, but you get less drops from them, too; exception working the opposite: hyena)

- Further slight HP/drop tweaks for some animals (mostly deer)

- Coral fish has a chance to drop fish meat now (so if you can't find any other source of food you might try your luck with them; they can drop only one though, they are tiny)

- Original pink salmon's drops doubled

- Saltwater fish should respawn more often and in bigger groups; couldn't change their drops for now, maybe in a future update

UPDATE 1.2.1

- Fixed moose calf not dropping fat

UPDATE 1.2.0

- Added all goats

- Added gazelle; easier to take down than vanilla, adults' drop amounts roughly the same as before

- Added hyenas. Females are a bit tankier and offer slightly more drops in general

- Some HP tweaks

- Most drops buffed. Now HP = base red meat drop

UPDATE 1.1.2

- Tweaked female boar drops and wolf health and drops

PATCH 1.1.1
- Fixed crash caused by incorrect quantity for moose hides.

UPDATE 1.1
- Added deer
- Added moose

VERSION 1
- Tested and cleared errors

VERSION 0
- Initial Release: Wolves, Rabbits, Coons, Chickens, Bears, Sheep, Boars, Fox, Fish
- adds fat to salmon
- increases amount of salmon and meat gained from salmon
- animals only drop a single hide of their size type.
- bunnies drop bushmeat. Males are slightly bigger than females.
- coons are fatter. Males drop more meat on average, females are more variable.
- foxes give more meat but are not as fat as raccoons. Females are fattier than males.
- Herbivores now give both redmeat ("organs") and bushmeat ("muscle"). Males will usually have higher muscle yield and lower fat. Females have lower muscle and higher fat and at greater variation.
- Altered health scores of various animals to be more realistic. Not many animals can take a full spear to the face and live.

COMPATIBILITY:

- Butchering: no errors found, should work okay, but you can get unlucky even with advanced facilities if both mods calculate minimal possible drops

Hello ! Would you consider making the mod compatible with River Fishs? To add fat to the drop of the fishes added by the mod?

GreenDragonette, Jan 11th at 1:01 PM

barleynaut Well, I tested how Butchering works with this mod, and:

Boars and other mid-size animals work mostly as intended, but you can get sudden vanilla-esque drop amounts if you're unlucky with calculations - especially if the creature you're butchering is very small, the formula used by Butchering seems quite unforgiving. May be frustrating if you're culling your chickens for the winter.

Also:

  • you can pick up an animal with your slot/backpack, and put it down, but good luck if you change your mind and want to butcher it on site because you got a more promising kill (like besting a bear that jumped you and wanting to free wolf's slot; you only get an option to pick it up again :( You might want to bring it up with the mod's author;
  • blood amount is rather underwhelming. I got 4 litres from a moose, and a litre from pig and hen each, which is kinda funny. It should vary much more depending on species;
  • similarly, while I can accept a boar giving 3 offal and prime, I'm not thrilled with adult moose giving 2 each when butchered on advanced table, and I don't like them giving the same amount of bones, either;

Overall it's an interesting mod giving quite the depth to a fairly brief vanilla mechanic, but it still needs much tweaking, and personally I think I'll stay without other than occasional testing if any issues do arise. I do, however, wish you good luck and much fun with it :)

GreenDragonette, Jan 10th at 9:53 AM

barleynaut You're welcome! Vanilla is quite annoying with its animal drops if you don't feel like hunting every day or so.

I don't know, I never used Butchering. I guess I really should download it and check. I'm afraid I don't have the faintest idea how to patch the incompability if it rears up though, at least for now (^u^')

barleynaut, Jan 10th at 3:59 AM (modified Jan 10th at 4:03 AM)

This is exactly the lightweight mod I was looking for, thanks so much! I just wanted to get more than meat scraps from a moose.

Tangential question...is this compatible with Butchering at all? i.e. will it still increase the drops from harvesting with a knife, but lower than it would be if you did it without Butchering installed?

GreenDragonette, Dec 22nd 2025 at 1:05 PM

ArmoredStone I might have an idea how to at least try to make a mod with what you wrote in the second paragraph, and include a health, speed and damage boost for some animals while at it, too (irl hyenas are really scary, not so in VS), but:

1) the original creator of Good Hunting is on a hiatus until further notice; I don't really have a way to contact them until then, which means I'd have to do it alone, and

2) my meager modding skills are way too narrow and puny to make the third paragraph reality; I'm still battling the new fish for drops and unlikely to win any time soon, so it's just not happening. Also,

3) even if I manage to boost the animals and avoid the mod breaking lots of other stuff, it would take a long while, because real life.

I know it's not the kind of answer you're looking for, but that's all I can give you :(

ArmoredStone, Dec 22nd 2025 at 1:59 AM

Would you guys be willing to make a complimentary mod that makes hunting harder? So we get more meat, at the cost of more applied skill?

Increased detection range, and have the animals run further after being attacked/startled?

Maybe even have different calls we can use to draw deer/elk/predators in?

I think all of this would pair nicely with one of the tracking/bleeding mods :D

GreenDragonette, Dec 21st 2025 at 6:59 PM

ArmoredStone Not tested, and I don't know how VS decides mod priority (aka which will win out), sorry!

ArmoredStone, Dec 21st 2025 at 5:27 AM

I don't see any mention of if this mod works with Butchery. Has that been tested?

GreenDragonette, Dec 9th 2025 at 10:42 AM

brayanluc No biggie :) Thank you for straightening it out!

brayanluc, Dec 9th 2025 at 6:39 AM

GreenDragonette I want to apologize!! I said before "Configure Everything" and that was a mistake! I was referring to ConfigLib. I'm so sorry!! 😥

GreenDragonette, Dec 8th 2025 at 9:50 PM

brayanluc Thank you! ;u;

brayanluc, Dec 7th 2025 at 3:47 AM (modified Dec 7th 2025 at 3:47 AM)

GreenDragonette Don't worry, you're awesome for updating the mod btw!

GreenDragonette, Dec 5th 2025 at 2:25 PM

Gaia_mission Noted, thank you.

brayanluc Thank you for the feedback. Regarding "Configure Everything", I wouldn't know, as it's the first time I've heard of that particular mod. It does sound like a very good idea, though. I'd like to look into that after I'm done with the update, but I'm afraid I can't make any promises; skills may not suffice.

brayanluc, Dec 5th 2025 at 9:04 AM (modified Dec 5th 2025 at 9:04 AM)

Agreed with Gaia_mission.

Also, wouldn’t it be possible to use “Configure Everything” to change the values if we wanted to? Maybe a slider that multiplies the amount by 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, or something like that. That way you wouldn’t feel the heavy burden of having to choose a fixed value. (the values you said are okay for me tho)

Gaia_mission, Dec 5th 2025 at 12:31 AM

I'd probably prefer that the mod be functional than introduce fish later. But its your project. If adding fish tickles your fancy go for it

GreenDragonette, Dec 4th 2025 at 5:37 PM

Good news is, much of the game version update is behind me. Bad news, I just fried my brain trying to reverse-code new fish. So it could be awhile, unless people are okay with me issuing a version without them first? Freshwater salmon converted to 1.21 pretty painlessly, and while I still want to experiment with their refresh spawn rate (will be way higher than vanilla anyway, don't worry), since fish meat got nerfed I'm putting in double the vanilla droprate and may raise it further. It's supposed to be an adult salmon, not a sardine, lol.

GreenDragonette, Dec 3rd 2025 at 11:20 AM (modified Dec 3rd 2025 at 5:25 PM)

brayanluc I mean, red meat here is supposed to be "organs", and depending on an animal you get roughly similar amount of bush meat, which is supposed to be venison, which can be pretty tough; and while I don't exactly understand why in vanilla it can be only fire-cooked or salted and use mods to change that, I understand it's a PITA to manage otherwise. Plus, as of version 1.2.0, elk has 30 HP (because, like you said, it's a pretty big animal), and while it makes it harder to take down, especially without trapping, its drops are adjusted accordingly. Another example, for now male moose drops 50 red meat, 50 bush meat and 10 fat on average, while female drops 30/20/15 and calf 10/10/... and actually 0 fat, whoops D: I'll go fix it right now, my bad. Edit: fixed, now it's 5!

I might differentiate more for male/female sexual dimorphism (some animals still have adult-HP, not male/female-HP), up the bush meat and swap any to red meat for babies, but I think this still beats vanilla.

Again, I'm open to the opinion that I'm being too stingy with drops (particular or all in general), or that I didn't catch some coding mistakes (pls point them out, I try but coding is not my forte), and welcome suggestions. I'm not particularly bothered about issuing a version with double the drops, but I'd like to know if it's wanted or the current values are enough.

brayanluc, Dec 3rd 2025 at 5:19 AM

GreenDragonette

  1. So you're saying, for example, that an elk with 21 health would drop 21 red meat? I thought it would be a bit more generous, since they already drop around 10 to 16, that modified value would be very close to vanilla. I would expect something like 30~40 red meat from an animal that size. (my opinion/taste)

  2. For me, it’s not really a problem if both male and female drop horns, even if it takes away a bit of immersion. But it’s not an issue.

GreenDragonette, Dec 2nd 2025 at 5:43 PM

Looking into changes needed for 1.21 game version; a thorough restructurization will be needed *rolls up sleeves*. Stay tuned!

GreenDragonette, Dec 1st 2025 at 12:47 PM (modified Dec 1st 2025 at 12:50 PM)

brayanluc True, and I hate constantly needing to go hunting if I don't immediately start domesticating and breeding animals in bulk. Do you think it'd be okay if I went ham on HP=red meat and adjusting rest of drops accordingly?

PS. Is it a problem if both goat sexes drop horns? I can't figure out so far how to restrict it only to males.

brayanluc, Dec 1st 2025 at 4:53 AM (modified Dec 1st 2025 at 4:53 AM)

GreenDragonette I mean... animals IRL actually have a lot of fat and meat, It's not a problem at all if they are dropping a good amount of them.. people are not obligated to install this mod.

GreenDragonette, Nov 27th 2025 at 9:41 PM (modified Nov 27th 2025 at 9:45 PM)

I think I figured out how to mod land animals' health and drops. Gazelle and goats look good for now, but just to be sure I'll test and tweak everything further and if it goes okay over the weekend, I'll update the mod next week and get on with 1.21.

I try to balance the health (and the resulting drops) between real life animals and game mechanics, but imo as soon as TaimatCompany comes back from the hiatus, there'll be a discussion about exact values, and maybe splitting the mod into versions - one closer to vanilla (with more or less current values), and another closer to rl - maybe where you need much effort to hunt down e.g. a moose, but if you do, your whole group is basically golden for a long time? I feel like I may be a little too stingy with drops right now. Pig farming would be even more OP, though.

GreenDragonette, Nov 25th 2025 at 9:18 AM (modified Nov 25th 2025 at 9:19 AM)

As much as I love this game, at a closer look its code is a mess. Takin's game code is missing a "g" in one line, some animals' code says "*-adult-male" while another's "*-male-adult", which obviously has no impact whatsoever, behavioural lists are mostly uniform, there's minimal info about fish, and all the brackets necessary to make it all work as intended are giving me a crosseye. I await, hope for and dread the moment devs will turn their eye on animals. I'm not really blaming them, btw, it obviously works and is very easy as far as games go, but it's still a pain for a dumb noobie to grok, so said noobie whines.

Hyenas are basically done and working, btw; rn I'm trying to untangle gazelles, goats are next, then I'm gonna upload the hopefully last version for 1.20 before straightening whatever happened during 1.21.x.

Thank you for your patience and huge props to TaimatCompany!

Yacine_Cnbl, Nov 20th 2025 at 3:11 PM

1.21.0 when 😞

brayanluc, Nov 11th 2025 at 2:16 AM

1.21.0 pleeeeease!!! It seems to not work correctly on 1.21.0.

GreenDragonette, Oct 7th 2025 at 4:36 PM

I've finally had time to test the mod with tweaked values and it works fine on my end on v1.20.12, but the site has issues with modinfo.json file and refuses to upload. I'm not sure how to proceed. Delete it and let it autogenerate?

Exact tweaks:

-female boar: fat 15->10, bushmeat 4->8

-wolf male HP: 30->20, redmeat 10->6

-wolf female HP: 10->14, bushmeat 10->8, redmeat 10->6

Thank you for this mod, it definitely makes hunting and ranching more rewarding :)

Shava, Aug 30th 2025 at 11:50 PM

I understand you are busy, but is there a prospect of a 1.21 update?

Good luck with RL, I understand it's a brutal and permadeath game. ;)

GreenDragonette, Aug 7th 2025 at 11:08 AM

Thank you for the invite! I'll try my best to test the changes, but I'm busy with rl stuff right now, so it may take a while. I do have a funny anectdote about Pretty Things though - the eighth block I panned dropped a uranium bit, lol!

MikeSyrup, Aug 5th 2025 at 11:22 PM

If it's not too much trouble would a config be possible?

TaimatCompany , Aug 1st 2025 at 12:30 PM

GreenDragonette I added you as a Team Member if you want to upload your updated version :) Just test it really well so we don't cause people errors. I'm not modding Vintage Story at the moment but I'm sure I'll be back at some point. I have a big project I want to work on.

GreenDragonette, Jul 27th 2025 at 11:49 AM

Works on 1.20.12 SP. Brought wolf HP closer to vanilla (thought 30 too high) and lowered drops to just under pigs', since woofers are irl leaner and often smaller. It makes wolves a bit less worth premeditated hunting than the other medium game, but healing starvation still shouldn't be a problem even if said wolf is your only meal for a day or two. The idea with mixed meat drops is genius! Works wonderfully with Primitive Survival jerky/smoked meat, too. Looking forward to other creatures being implemented :)

Not thrilled with how size and drops are handled in game, and your mod solves the issue very well. Thank you!

TaimatCompany , Jun 3rd 2025 at 11:52 PM

brayanluc thanks!

brayanluc, May 29th 2025 at 7:45 AM

Confirmed: Works fine with 1.20.11 (only tested in singleplayer)

B0YAR, May 22nd 2025 at 7:53 AM

TaimatCompany No problem! I like your mods anyway! It good for vanilla mobs.

TaimatCompany , May 22nd 2025 at 12:19 AM

B0YAR I'm so sorry, I've looked at those mods and they are absolutely monstrous in size and complexity. This mod is more for beefing up vanilla animals. There's no algorithm I'm using (at least not in DLL code or anything), I'm just manually changing drops of all the creatures. Right now the goats are a big challenge because of all the varieties. And if goats are tough, there's no way I'll ever be able to go through each breed of Tyrannosaur and all the others. This is just going to be for vanilla animals only I'm afraid.

The good news is, as far as modding goes - Vintage Story has to be the easiest and most user friendly modding plantform I've ever used. You could mod those creatures yourself if you really wanted to!

If I ever get into the Stone Age Fauna mods or the others I may end up building a specific mod for those if I feel the drops aren't enough. But I've already got a couple big projects I'm working on for vanilla, so I would encourage you to take up the mantle and give it a shot :)

Vigilance, May 21st 2025 at 9:42 PM

Sometimes I look at mods like this and I think "That's neat," and then realize the likelihood of it encompassing every single modded creature is pretty much nil. I'd be really surprised if a FotSA and LotP patch came any time soon, with the size of both of those series.

B0YAR, May 21st 2025 at 8:05 PM

Hi! This mod not compatible with this mods - Fauna of the Stone Age, Legacy of the Phanerozoic and Something in the Water. Please add compability patches!

LunaGore, May 17th 2025 at 1:21 PM

Thanks! I removed these two mods and it seems everything is working now!

TaimatCompany , May 16th 2025 at 3:45 PM

LunaGore yeah idk why you would get 80 hides from a boar. The code i implement is pretty straightforward. Like i don't implement any DLL files or calculations. Every animal gives the same quantity hide: AVG 1 VAR 0. I can't really speak to others mod code because i don't have the tools to edit that kind of stuff. I use text files and that's pretty much it.

Some mods will try to identify a drop by it's numbered position under the values category, like "make the second item's quantity 60", which, in vanilla, is probably hide. So that could be what's happening. I'll have to take a look at the jsons of those mods but i suspect that's our culprit.

This has probably happened because when i rebuilt the drop tables i changed the order of the items from external to internal organs cause i like to organized. I hadn't considered other mods might get stirred up because of it though.

LunaGore, May 16th 2025 at 1:21 PM

TaimatCompany

Well the issue is it isn't just the added creatures, it's the vanilla ones too (hence my testing with the sow/boar). I'm also use the "R" series of mods specifically https://mods.vintagestory.at/rmeat and previously https://mods.vintagestory.at/rps both of which adjust skin and meat/fat drops for animals but doesn't mix the variety between red and bush meats.

TaimatCompany , May 16th 2025 at 1:02 AM

LunaGore that's pretty odd. My mod very specifically makes it so that you only get one hide per animal. I'm fairly new at this so I can't do anything real complex yet. I imagine the FotSA must have a core mod somewhere right? I don't use it but I can take a look.

LunaGore, May 15th 2025 at 9:33 PM

Love the mod so far except for one issue, I'm getting 80 minimum hides from boar/sow. The FotSA series animals will only drop 1 of their specific pelts then while converting it I get a load more (forget exact number). I can provide a screen recording and my modlist via discord or an issue tracker if you'd like to set one up.

TaimatCompany , May 15th 2025 at 11:28 AM

SerHause this is a mod to the vanilla animals (im not quite done yet, still have goats and stuff left), but yeah, I could definitely do one for those. Stone age fauna looks pretty fun.

SerHause, May 15th 2025 at 10:17 AM

Do you plan on adding compatability with the Fauna of the Stone Age (FOTSA) animal mods?

TaimatCompany , May 14th 2025 at 6:59 PM

gilt_kutabe Thanks for testing!

gilt_kutabe, May 14th 2025 at 5:52 PM

Definitely trying this out soon! Seems to work just fine with the Butchering and Ancient Tools mods and their added drops (brain, offal), and the added drops from this mod seem to work when using the hooks and butchering tables, for anyone wondering.
