RecyclingTools - Be eco-friendly, don't waste, recycle!

Be eco-friendly and don't throw away your old tools and containers - recover valuable materials instead!

🌱 Eco-Friendly Tool & Container Recycling

Tired of hoarding obsolete bronze tools after upgrading to iron? Or accumulating worn-out flint tools and old storage containers?
RecyclingTools brings sustainability to Vintage Story by allowing you to recycle your outdated equipment and containers directly into valuable materials.

♻️ Why Throw Away When You Can Recycle?

Every seasoned crafter knows the frustration of accumulating outdated gear. That tin bronze helve hammer served you well,
but now it's just taking up chest space. Your flint knife is worn out but still has good materials. Your old linen sacks and backpacks are cluttering your storage.
With RecyclingTools, you can:

  • Recycle any metal tool directly into valuable metal scrap using chisels
  • Convert metal scrap into metal bits for reuse in crafting
  • Salvage flint chips from stone age tools for silica production
  • Recycle containers - linen sacks, hunterbags, and backpacks
  • Split stone paths into slabs for precision building
  • Get different materials depending on your tool choice
  • Process materials back into useful crafting components
  • Reduce waste and be a responsible crafter
  • Save resources - every scrap counts!

Hi! You're absolutely right - this was not intended and is actually an exploit I missed! 😅

When I designed the flint tool recycling, I was careful to prevent this kind of "repair" mechanic, but somehow it completely slipped my mind when implementing the metal tool system. The dismantling was supposed to lead to destructive recycling only, not tool restoration.

Good news: I've just finished fixing this in v1.4.0! The new system:

  • Removes the dismantling exploit entirely - no more "free repairs"
  • Introduces direct tool recycling - chisel + complete tool → metal scrap → metal bits
  • Maintains the recycling functionality while preventing the unintended repair mechanic
  • Adds a new Metal Scrap item as an intermediate step for better balance

The recovery rate is now properly balanced at 10-25% of the original crafting cost, making it a genuine salvage system rather than an alternative repair method.

Thank you for reporting this! It's exactly the kind of feedback that helps make the mod better. The fix should be available shortly - I'm just finalizing the release now.

In the meantime, feel free to enjoy the exploit while it lasts! 😉 But know that it's definitely getting patched out.

Hi! I'm not sure this is intended, since the description seems to indicate otherwise ... but I seem to be able to dismantle a metal tool and then re-craft it back at full durability instead of having to turn it into bits and re-smelt? I'm not sure why this would be happening, as I've freshly installed it and haven't made any changes to the mod.

You have solved the single most annoying part of the game for me; thank you!

I understand, I am a blacksmith myself in our community, and I don't know what to do with the tools I have produced, and here we are suddenly entering a new era....
I stopped because I have a problem with flint and used tools, and then the recovered crumbs are different from the unused ones. Unfortunately I have not been able to find the difference :(
In the next version there will be the possibility to recover metal from tools, this will be my motivation to get rid of the bronze pickaxes, shovels, axes from the chest of finished goods...

💬 kvrst, May 18th at 4:16 PM

Why can't we demonize all metal tools? There's many copper or bronze tools in ruins/cracked vessels, even the possibility of dismantling only unused tools would be great for me

I have supplemented version 1.2.1 with arrow and spearheads. I overlooked this in version 1.2.0

💬 Javidac, May 13th at 9:51 AM

I would love a recipie to get rid of flint arrowheads too! making them burnable to turn into calcined flint seems like the easiest option imo.

Thank you for your interest in RecyclingTools! Currently, the mod focuses on metalworking tools (helve hammers and pounder caps), but I'm definitely considering expanding to other items in future updates.

Recycling bags is a great suggestion! Here's my roadmap for expanding recycling options:

Planned for next update (v1.1.0):

  • More metal tools (prospecting picks, saws, etc.)
  • Configurable metal recovery amounts

Considering for future updates:

  • Leather items recycling (bags, quivers, etc.) → leather scraps
  • Cloth items recycling → cloth fragments
  • Wooden tools recycling → sticks and lumber
  • Armor recycling → partial material recovery

If you have specific items you'd really like to see recycling options for, please let me know! Community feedback helps prioritize which features to implement first.

The core philosophy of this mod is "don't waste, recycle" - so expanding beyond just metal tools definitely fits with that vision.

💬 MortPheus, May 12th at 12:27 PM

Is it possible to recycle other objects/materials like bags for example?
