After you put things into the kiln, light up and close the door, you can remove the fuel and the "hours burned" tracker will continue ticking. When you relight the fuel underneath 9 hours later, your pottery inside will autocomplete (because the timer has been running all this time).
THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN FIXED IN 1.20.4
