Saltpeter Production introduces an age-old production mechanism for saltpetre. Instead of hunting for deposits, you can make your own supply using rot and other organic disposables (from other mods, if compatible). This gives an additional uses to such items.

Stuff farmland (barren to medium fertility) with rot or other organics to create a nitre bed, then add some more material for it to start growing saltpetre.

This mod is compatible with Nature's Call, compatibility with other mods can be easily achieved with json.

Screenshots are temporary.

Desiderata
  • Better models (anyone is welcome to contribute)
  • More immesive interactions
    • Nitre beds require watering/rain to progress

Your mods are so cool man, hopefully you come back and update them

DragonLordAcar, Jul 17th at 9:56 PM

Most of the texture problems comes from vanila. To make the growth look lest wierd however, you can match the voxel growth to the break animation. I can't wait for your 1.22 update.

Illio, May 24th at 8:06 AM

Thank you for creating this mod.

Is there a chance you'll be willing to update it for 1.22?

The game crashes with this on 1.22. Are you planning to update it?

Grumman, Feb 10th at 1:02 AM (modified Feb 10th at 1:13 AM)

yyeeeeessshhh that takes a lot of rot....

wait i can really just use water??? shhiiittt i just wasted 54 rot.. crying.

Janonas, Jan 4th at 3:24 PM

It would be nice if after harvesting the saltpeter the groun underneath would stay as farmland, so the pits stay designated.

Tarka1939, Jan 1st at 7:14 PM

Nitre bed accepts normal water as a "fuel" to start production, simmilarly, you can make nitre bed with water instead of rot.

Oweyan, Nov 30th 2025 at 11:08 PM

How does this mod work? there is no information in the handbook that i can find

jayu , Nov 25th 2025 at 12:10 AM

Kalina nothing in vanilla, it refers to possible compatibility options that can be easily added.

Kalina, Nov 23rd 2025 at 12:24 AM

I'm also curious what exactly 'other materials' is exactly.

MegaBroBuster, Nov 16th 2025 at 12:37 AM

while it is explained here, i also second the idea of adding this info into the handbook. For polish's sake

How do you use this mod to actually make Saltpeter? A handbook entry or a better description here would go a long way

LunaTheFox, Sep 9th 2025 at 8:42 PM

Thank you :3

Repost of previous comment:

In the latest version there is no recipe, you can create a nitre bed by interacting with farmland with rot or other compatible materials (currently only urine from Nature's Call).

The mod description has been updated with the new creation instructions.

LunaTheFox, Sep 9th 2025 at 4:13 AM

was the recipe for the Nitre Bed removed?

Kappir, Sep 4th 2025 at 8:56 AM

jayu Nice, tbh once you find saltpeter in the cave, you find a few stacks at a time, and you can find it in much less time than 20 days it takes to make compost, so imo balancing it around compost would be nicer.

I'll pass you some models on discord once I'm done

jayu , Sep 4th 2025 at 3:11 AM (modified Sep 4th 2025 at 3:14 AM)

Kappir Yeah the issue with the 33 is annoying, I made it 30 just to take a round number but might as well make it a divisor of 100 then. About compost, I suppose that makes sense, I was thinking about the potential to get blasting powder and the fact that saltpetre is normally hard to find as one has to go look for it in caves. That's why I was being convervative. But I will adjust some of this and also make it configurable.

I'd appreciate some model contributions, having more stages would be fine too tbh. It's quite hard for me to make models because I can't get VSMC to work.

Modified values may work for multiplayer if the server owner uses a modified version, because I use the server defined values, but I'm not 100% sure. Most likely it might have some visual inconsistency (client expects a different value but then gets updated from the server).

Kappir, Sep 3rd 2025 at 11:35 PM (modified Sep 3rd 2025 at 11:37 PM)

jayu

Imo balance it around compost, which I'd say equals usefulness of saltpeter. You get 1 compost per 4 rot after 20 days. Now in your mod you get 1 saltpeter per 18 rot after 12 days. Imo maybe making one stage of saltpeter "growth" 3 days not 4, and changing rot to saltpeter ratio to 8 to 1 it would be nicely balanced.

Also, maybe it'd be a good idea to make it so a "growth" stage takes 33% of Nitre bed's filling. Now it takes 30%, which makes it so whenever sb fills it to 100% and not 90%, 10% of the value gets lost.

Thx for making this mod! I'll maybe try to make some nicer niter bed/effereffeferfesffence models and pass them to you if you don't mind

I did change those values for myself, but I don't think those changes would apply for multiplayer if I were to host. Config file I'm sure would.

jayu , Sep 3rd 2025 at 4:38 PM

Kappir yes, do you think it's balanced or unbalanced? I can adjust default balance, I have tested the mod but not in survival so idk if it feels too hard or too easy. Saltpeter is quite useful so I would lean towards making it harder since rot ain't that hard to get, but I can make it configurable. In fact, it mostly is already prepared to be configurable since I did not hardcode values and they're all in json so other mods can easily alter them. Technically you could alter them yourself in the rot patch or the nitre bed asset itself if you don't want to wait for a release that makes them configurable.

Kappir, Sep 3rd 2025 at 12:11 PM

18 rot for 1 saltpeter is an interesting deal. Could we maybe get a config to adjust this stuff?

jayu , Sep 2nd 2025 at 9:23 PM (modified Sep 2nd 2025 at 9:23 PM)

xXPo_Tay_ToXx I kind of made this with that in mind XD, the idea was to have it work with multiple mods or also as a standalone mod that only depends on vanilla.

xXPo_Tay_ToXx, Sep 2nd 2025 at 12:00 AM

I was really hoping this was compatible with nature's call; so very glad it is

jayu , Sep 1st 2025 at 6:06 PM

Da4in in the latest version there is no recipe, you can create a nitre bed by interacting with farmland with rot or other compatible materials (currently only urine from Nature's Call)

Da4in, Sep 1st 2025 at 4:19 PM

witch  is the recipe i can´t find it----

jayu , Aug 31st 2025 at 4:22 PM (modified Aug 31st 2025 at 9:49 PM)

Jhoulana I will upload some. They're kind of temporary, especially the recipe, for which I want to enable a more immersive style. Perhaps I'll make it with a hoe tool mode. Added!

Jhoulana, Aug 31st 2025 at 11:18 AM

can you please add more ingame pictures ? i like to see the nitre bed and the crafting recipes.

jayu , Aug 30th 2025 at 2:21 PM

Vargur done

Vargur, Aug 29th 2025 at 11:45 PM

Any chance of a 1.20 version?

jayu , Aug 29th 2025 at 10:37 PM

Snakeshit yeah that was weird it showed up in the handbook but did not work. Now fixed.

PyroBerserk, Aug 29th 2025 at 2:53 PM

I love ya, now i can create my own gunpowder industry and dominates my neighbour

Snakeshit, Aug 29th 2025 at 12:53 PM

Hi, it seems I can't craft the nitre beds, if I put the items into the craft square there is no out put
