Then make some rusty gears, lost knowledge no more!
Is it considered counterfitting? Maybe, but who's going to stop you?
Maybe a bear, actually...
Rusting your gears, to act as another way to acquire rusty gears to trade with. Taking effort, time, and material to produce.
You can create 4 iron gears with 1 ingot, only accepting iron:
To rust those gears, place them in a barrel with either water, or brine. Sea water and Brine will rust gears quicker.
It takes 82 hours in water, 67.2 hours in seawater, and 46.8 hours in brine respectively.
With the "I RESEARCHED ELECTROLYSIS" update it now takes.
212 hours (8 days) for fresh water.
147.2 hours (6 days) for salt water.
86.8 hours for brine (3 days) for brine.
Now getting brine will be worth it, bet. Especially since it doubles the amount of gears it rusts!

Was made aware of the saltwater portion not, included it with a slight bonus over stillwater, so now you dont need to make brine unless you want to really get quicker gears, if its worth it. | |||||||

Aw yeah counterfeiting
Funnily enough, if this was a vanilla feature, traders wouldn't accept it either way. Rusty gears are made of an alloy that's completely unkown by the traders, and by extention, us.
Which makes this mod kinda funny in retrospect.
The iron gears do not sit in the tongs when held.
Updated: They will fit best on metal tongs, and will not be orbiting wooden tongs anymore

They are used as money becaue they can't make gears of old world quality. What you are doing is basicly making low quality gears, the rusting them to make look like the older high quality ones. So yes this is counterfitting

After checking on the latest release version of 1.21.6. I can confirm it works fine!
I will update the versions accordingly.

i love your idea of rusting gears to make your own, sadly i am on 1.20.4 still. Do you think you coud make a 1.20.4 version, please ?
Updated to v1.1.1, warm gears now work on your tongs!
Released a New version that adds seawater portions that provides a slight bonus over still water, however Brine remains the fastest method.
