Primitive Tools Updated:
About: Primitive Tools Updated is an updated version of Primitive Tools. The original mod can be found here for more info: Original Mod: https://mods.vintagestory.at/primitivetools
I updated Zinth's mod to work in 1.22.2 (current version I'm on) because the original mod was broken. I can't say this is my first mod, just my first update to a mod to keep it alive (it was under the CC0 license). I'm completely new to modding for Vintage Story, so please do not expect me to start adding new items or features. This mod replaces the original mod if on V1.22.2 and should work on V1.22.0+
Tested on 1.22.3/1.22.6
Tools:
Stone Pickaxe - Can mine at a tool tier 2 level, albeit slowly and not for long. (can't mine metal or mantle blocks)
Stone Hammer - Can smash any non-crystallized ore chunk into nuggets a few times. Also used with the splitter to make planks.
Wood Splitter - Can split logs into planks when hammered into logs. Can also wedge apart plank blocks without the hammer.
Stone Chisel - New in V 2.0.2 - is an early chisel with extremely low durability and can be knapped from hard stones. This is based on actual early chisels that primarily used hard stones like flint or obsidian. Must use a hammer in the off-hand slot.
CRAFTING RECIPES:
These are the main recipes for tools. There were twigs and some other items I left in, just check the handbook in-game.
V 2.0.4 -
Added debarked logs to planks recipe.
V 2.0.2 -
Added a realistic primitive stone chisel. Requires a hammer in the off-hand slot.
Removed redundant scripts (nothing broke when removed so fingers crossed).
V 2.0.1 -
Fixed the bone arrow error message when loading a world.
V2.0.0 -
Updated primitive tools to VS 1.22.2

ngl it looks broken as of 1.22.7 😥 i tried knapping the tool parts and they didn't show up, neither in the knaping ui, nor in the creative mode items list. i have some mods installed but i made sure to uncheck (disable) all of them besides this one to test, and it still didn't worked :( if it works in your end perhaps it's user error? or perhaps there's a mismatch between your version and the one on the moddb? 🥺 i dunno
Not working in 1.22.7 the stone tools dont even show up in the knapping interface and i couldnt find the wood splinters etiher
Might be a mod conflict. I'm running 1.22.7 and currently don't see any issues in a fresh game. If you find a conflicting mod, let me know, and I will see what I can do.
well im running primitive survival the legacy of the phanerozoic dino mods mods armory electrical progressive rustbound magic petai and animal cages food shelves metal cookware mpe gearbox quarry
oh ya and expanded foods
yooo i think i just found the solution. when i download the mod and try opening the zip (i'm on linux so i use ark to open it, but this issue might even affect other OS) i see a bunch of files with long names, they are basically file structures.
the correct would be having the mod files inside folders the game can read, like assets, then primitivetools, then itemtypes, but instead, when i open (or decompress the zip, same thing) i instead get files like assets\primitivetools\itemtypes\toolheads\hammerhead.json, which are readable json files, but aren't in the folders they should have been. the intended filepath became the filename, idk how this happened lol. i solved this by recreating each individual folder and putting each json in their respective place as their name implied, cutting the unnecessary folder\folder\folder\file.json shenanigans, and it just worked, even with my 30 other mods loaded in lol.
MrCardu so yeah, i think i found da bug 🪳 good luck, bud 🥴🫡
The source folder structure should have worked, since most subfolders are only for organization and Vintage Story doesn’t require them. However, it looks like the ZIP files were storing Windows path separators, which caused problems for Linux users. The next release should fix the packaging issue properly. Thanks for tracking it down!
Could you have it split open rotten logs to give grubs?
Thanks!
Final comment: I found partial incompatability with Immersive Woodworking, but the fix is most likely on their side, not yours. Currently their "DisableVanillaPlankCrafting" option is bugged when alongside Primitive Tools, so instead of only disabling the vanilla saw+log recipe, it disables all recipes involving a log, including the splitter and hammer recipe.
feature request: ive already made it on my end, but if you added a recipe using debarked logs as well that would be nice. its just "debarkedlog-*-ud" instead of "log-placed-*-ud"
with your permission i would like to post my own fork of this mod
Feel free to make a fork. I plan to sit down soon to see what I can do for compatibility. As for your request/feedback, the debarked log tip definitely helps speed that up for Immersive Woodworking. Thanks for the help!
so i actually discovered by accident that it just moved the recipe to the sawhorse. the splitter is usable as a saw tool in Immersive Woodworking, without a hammer, and gives the IW amount of planks, 24. im not gonna make a fork yet because im still playing around with how to implement some of this compatability.
The newest release adds the debarked logs. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
I looked into Immersive Woodworking. The Splitter is intentionally recognized as a saw, but IW’s sawhorse applies the same global saw behavior and yields to it, which bypasses Primitive Tools’ intended Stone Hammer + Splitter recipe. You're right, this looks like something that would need an Immersive Woodworking-side compatibility option or fix. Thanks again for the helpful testing and details.
Has Recipe Conflict with Ithania Expanded Fishing.
Cannot build Crude Worm Bin from that mod. Simple Twigs override it.
Also tools do not follow regular placement rules etc?
Just tested it on my own system running 1.22.6 and the latest release of Ithania Expanded Fishing (1.1.1). I was able to build the Crude Worm Bin. It might be a mod load order issue or another mod interfering somehow. As for tools, I haven't seen any placement issues yet. Hammer and pickaxe currently do not follow normal placement rules. Will try to fix that in the next update.
I love this mod, out of curiosity did you create this with JSON or did you have to use C#? I want to learn how to do stuff like this myself
It uses JSON. I think most of the recipe mods that add new items use JSON
Please add compatablity with the Floral Zones mod so we can cut their logs into planks.
Thanks!
This mod outputs twigs regardless of how many slots are filled with sticks. This makes it appear impossible to craft anything that uses 100% sticks. (crude ladders, tool racks, etc.) As a temporary workaround, a piece of flint (or any other item) can be used as a placeholder to start the recipie, and then replaced with a stick at the end to get the intended output.
I just tested it on a blank installation and didn't see any bugs regarding the sticks (I was able to craft a crude ladder and tool racks with sticks alone). Since I can't seem to replicate it on a new setup, my guess would be it is conflicting with another mod's recipes.
Hello! Awesome mod! Makes early game so much simpler.
I have a question though. Is there a way to disable the rope recipe, and add string as a requirement for the above tools? I use the String Sense mod.
Awesome mod, thank you and anyone else that makes more stone-age tech things, I'm currently trying to do a caveman playthrough and I am trying to find as many mods as I can to make it last a good while without capping out on things to do or things that just outright require me to go into the copper age.
Could you add compatibility with "Salty & Toast's Immersive: Mining"? It reworks the animations and how most tools work and when using that with this the pickaxe doesn't work.
Just to be clear, the stone hammer will work for the stone chisel?
Yes, the stone hammer (and the other vanilla hammers work for it).
Thanks to everyone for the downloads and feedback so far! I’ve just released v2.0.2, which adds a Stone Chisel.
I wanted to bridge that gap before the Bronze Age, as smithing chisels can be a real grind, so this lets you start detailing builds early (in a realistic way, though the stone chisels are more fragile than metal ones).
For comparison, stone chisels have 40 durability, while copper chisels have 600. If you feel stone chisels are still too powerful, let me know! I wanted to keep them grounded in actual primitive history while ensuring they don't replace the need for metal tools.
Also, just a quick heads-up: I'm still very new to the Vintage Story modding API and process, so I'm holding off on compatibility patches for now while I focus on learning the core system and keeping things simple and stable. Thanks for understanding!
would it be possible to patch in compatibility with String Sense, and Reinforced Tools?
Ooh. This is interesting! I will happily keep an eye on this and let you know if there's any issues. Always nice to have a stepping stone towards the better stuff-it encourages you to improve beyond the stone tools to get to the metal as fast as possible...but, also lets you get into some of the stuff you might want a little early at the expense of burning more resources.
I'm getting error messages when creating a world/loading a save about a "bone arrow" mentioning this mod.
Removing it gets rid of the error
Yeah, it's still playable and doesn't affect anything game wise. It doesn't (or shouldn't) cause a crash so you can ignore that error. It came from the original mod I forked. That being said, I plan on figuring out the cause of that message soon. I went ahead and fixed it in the latest 2.0.1 release.
Thanks for bringing back the mod! For me it appears that the twigs recipe prevents tool rack recipe from working. Running 1.22.2.
Thanks!
No problem. As for the recipe issue, I can’t reproduce it on my end. I checked the twig recipe, and it does not touch the tool rack at all. On Vintage Story 1.22.2 (tested today), the tool rack still crafts normally with 6 sticks (3 top, 3 bottom), and twigs are a separate 1-stick -> 6-twigs recipe. If you’re running other mods, one of them is likely overriding or patching the vanilla tool rack recipe.
